Stellan Skarsgård as Gustav Borg in Joachim Trier's Sentimental Value is a man who is searching for connection with the two daughters, Nora (Renate Reinsve) and Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas) he effectively abandoned when he split from their just deceased mother. The once storied director turns up at the funeral for his ex-wife and one of the first things he does is to reclaim a set of speakers from the home (a longstanding character in itself) that has housed members of his family for generations. Gustav is opinionated, arrogant, funny, and awkward. He's written a screenplay for Nora, who is now a respected theatre actress, to star in but she doesn't want anything to do with it or him.The quiet truth is that Nora and Gustav are two similar souls who both struggle with connection and loneliness. Art is their form of expression but it can also be a burden they don't know how to negotiate.Nadine Whitney speaks with Stellan about how Gustav sees Nora and longs for her to return the recognition.the Curb is a completely independent and ad free website that lives on the support of listeners and readers just like you. In what can only be described as a flagrant, shameless attempt to appear on Scandinavian news programs again, we're diving into Joachim Trier's quiet but complex exploration of generational trauma and the interpersonal sturm und drang of familial artists, Sentimental Value! Along the way, we discuss stage fright, sibling vs. only-child life, and an unsettling trend that's showing up in every single film we are covering this season.

I tu dius "bon vespre"? Joan: [2:20] D'acord. I sí, sí, sí, els hi vaig escriure i… em fa molta gràcia, perquè vaig fer molt espam així per WhatsApp, i tothom em responia amb la imatge, saps? La imatge aquella de: "Ja has votat", no sé què. I jo: "D'acord, d'acord". Ui, Joan… Joan: [2:37] No tinc cinquanta cosins. This song usually is used when someone passes away, but I have always thought of it more for someone that I know is very much alive that I'll probably never see again. And that makes me sad.

The new movie Sentimental Value is one of the great films about absentee dads who reappear in their kids' lives. Stellan Skarsgård plays a renowned filmmaker preparing his next feature and attempting to reconnect with his estranged daughters (played by Renate Reinsve and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas). And it proves that at the very least, the tension between art and parenthood is complicated. The film is directed by Joachim Trier (The Worst Person in the World) and also stars Elle Fanning. Sean and Amanda begin the show by discussing the imminent sale of Warner Brothers Discovery, consider the potential implications of a merger with one of Paramount, Comcast, or Netflix, and debate which scenario is the most likely outcome (1:22). Then, they cover the new Colleen Hoover adaptation ‘Regretting You' starring Allison Williams and Dave Franco, which they found absolutely baffling (17:28). Next, they have an extensive conversation around Joachim Trier's ‘Sentimental Value,' starring Renate Reinsve and Stellan Skarsgard, where they explore why some people are connecting to the film so strongly, while for others it doesn't seem to resonate (47:15). Finally, Trier joins the show to explain how much of himself is actually mapped onto Skarsgard's character, how being a good listener and observant of the world around you translates to strong characterization, and the story of shooting in a house that was down the street he grew up on (1:33:54).
