He describes receiving his Oscar from Steven Spielberg at age 31, as a total out of body experience, and potentially one of the gayest moments of his life. More so by the Oscar's organisers asking them to regroup on stage and sing a rendition of Judy Garland's 'Over The Rainbow'. Iain is a champion of diverse story-telling and thinks we best focus our energy on seeing gay actors in straight roles, rather than the other way round.

In today's podcast we build on last week's Kings Speech and dig into the new government's ambitions to reform the much-criticised water sector and drive investment into this vital part of the UK's infrastructure. And it's just a week or so after the delayed release of Ofwat's long-awaited draft determination setting out how much water companies will be allowed to charge customers over the next five years. And it looks like an interesting and challenging time for everyone working in the sector. As my guest last week Alasdair Reisner, chief executive of the Civil Engineering Contractors Association explained, for all the political, financial and environmental pressures piling up on the sector, there is no question that water is set to be one of the big growth markets over the next decade or so, as water companies battle to guarantee supplies, manage flooding, protect against drought and reduce the number of pollution incidents. So how will this all map out for the supply chain? Where are the real opportunities? Well let's ask someone with their finger on the pulse of the water industry. My guest today is Tom Williams, non-executive director of British Water, the body representing the water sector supply chain and ceo of water technology and innovation consultancy Enebio. In the podcast today we spend a few moments digging behind the headlines from last week's Kings Speech and try to understand what the implications of the new government's ambitious first legislative programme will mean for the civil engineering and infrastructure sector. In my Kings Speech preview last week I perhaps adopted a somewhat optimistic tone regarding the potential prospect of a rake of new infrastructure investment flowing rapidly from this new government. Well listening to King Charles as he addressed parliament, I reckon that this optimism was justified! “My Ministers will get Britain building,” he said.  “Including through planning reform, as they seek to accelerate the delivery of high quality infrastructure and housing. They will also pursue sustainable growth by encouraging investment in industry, skills and new technologies.”I reckon that of the 39 bills introduced in this parliamentary session at least a dozen will have a direct impact on the infrastructure sector, But of course talk is just talk; promises to enact legislation do not necessarily translate into immediate boom time for the industry supply chain. So in reality what does all this promise of change actually mean in terms of boosting activity in the critical UK construction sector?Well who better to do that analysis for us than Alasdair Reisner, chief executive of the Civil Engineering Contractors Association and the man very much with his finger on the pulse of the sector. Nish and Coco are joined by Liz Bates to discuss Vance's comments, the themes behind the surprise-free King's Speech and two shock resignations - those of Welsh First Minister Vaughan Gething and England manager Gareth Southgate. Later, Nish and Coco catch up with two young people with lived experience of our crumbling education system and check in with Janeen Hayat, Director of Collective Action at the Fair Education Alliance. Education is one of the new government's top five priorities - where the few short-term wins to be had are balanced out by some prickly policy problems. Later, Liz returns to unveil an MP's (not-so) shameful secret, the neverending Tory psychodrama and the reality TV show nobody was asking for. Pod Save the UK is a Reduced Listening production for Crooked Media.Contact us via email: PSUK@reducedlistening.co.ukWhatsApp: 07494 933 444 (UK) or + 44 7494 933 444 (internationally)Insta: https://instagram.com/podsavetheukTwitter: https://twitter.com/podsavetheukTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@podsavetheukFacebook: https://facebook.com/podsavetheukYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/podsavetheworld Guests: Liz BatesJaneen HayatUseful Links: Find us on Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/@podsavetheukBuy Tickets to see Pod Save the UK live - https://tickets.edfringe.com/whats-on/pod-save-the-uk-liveAudio Credits: Parliament.TVITV Good Morning BritainThe Guardian

This podcast is a bit different. In short, due to various reasons, you just have me. But that's fine as it's a great opportunity to have a quick catch up post General Election and a gaze into the crystal ball to see what the new and very shiny Starmer government has in store for infrastructure as we head towards the Kings Speech and opening of a new Parliamentary session this Wednesday. And without getting unnecessarily nostalgic, it's a great moment to point out - and to mark the fact - that it is 30 years this week since, having sat and passed my professional exams to become a chartered civil engineer, I packed my bags from Sir Owen Williams and Partners and made the bold decision to join New Civil Engineer magazine and start a new career in journalism.A quick shout out to my old colleague and buddy Diarmaid Fleming, who reminded me of this milestone.  Diarmaid and I joined NCE on the same day and from similar backgrounds and were famously both late for our first Monday morning news meeting with then editor Mike Winney.Well last week's landslide sweep to power by Labour was, of course, reminiscent of the 1997 win under Tony Blair. That prompted an unprecedently renaissance in infrastructure spending, urged on by the fledgling private finance initiative and underpinned by large dollops of public spending and public debt. They were heady times that saw huge changes in the UK approach to public transport, to energy policy and to investment in schools, hospitals, prisons and in national and local highways. The reality is that today, hardly a new ministerial speech goes by without reference to infrastructure investment as the key to driving economic growth and kickstarting the transformation of UK living standards. As Sir Kier Starmer puts it in the pre-Election manifesto, we are presented with “an opportunity to begin the work of national renewal." OK, so that was the ambition. What about the reality of delivery when the rubber hits the road. It's a tough brief given the perilous state of the public finances so let's take a quick look at six key issues that jump out to me as interesting factors that might shape the next five to ten years of infrastructure and try to get a sense of where we are heading. 1. Giving teeth to the NIC2. Planning reform3. Focus on Local Authorities4. Great British Energy5. Transport strategy6. Creating an infrastructure investment fundResources Labour Party manifesto National Infrastructure CommissionMinistry of Housing, Communities & Local GovernmentLord Hendy appointed Minister of State

When you're not taken seriously it can evoke feelings of discouragement, frustration and even anger. When one feels like their work is overlooked or dismissed, it's easy to dwell on the negative self-talk that any thoughts, opinions and original ideas will be disregarded and dismissed. This is especially disheartening when a great deal of effort and work has been poured into ideas and even projects that are then met with indifference or disregard. If you are like me, you have felt this before and it doesn't matter what level you're at. Others can make you feel insignificant and not good enough. Before achieving immense success with the Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling faced rejection after rejection. She was told that it would be best to keep her day job because she would never be a writer and especially writing children's books. Writing children's books wasn't seen as a lucrative career. She persisted and eventually found a publisher that would publish her work. The rest is history. Her books aren't just for children. Many adults, including myself, have read them cover to cover. And as far as a lucrative career, she is worth up to a billion dollars at this point in her life. When dismissal of our ideas is repeated, it's natural for our self-confidence to erode with the questioning of our worth or validity of any input we have given or any work we may have accomplished. Here, we cover some ways to combat the feelings of discouragement, anger and even giving up when you're not taken seriously. We will focus on four ways. Rob recaps the key points from the recent King's speech, focusing on housing-related announcements. The first major point is the introduction of a new leasehold and freehold bill, which will ban leaseholds for new houses in England and Wales. Additionally, the standard lease extension period will be increased to 990 years. Rob talks about the potential benefits of these changes, such as providing clarity and security for homeowners.  KEY TAKEAWAYS The King's speech announced a new leasehold and freehold bill that will ban leaseholds for new houses in England and Wales, while increasing the standard lease extension period to 990 years. This aims to provide more clarity and security in the property market. Banning leaseholds for new homes is seen as a positive move for the property market, as it eliminates potential issues with leases and ground rent. However, it is not expected to have a significant impact on flats, which are commonly leasehold. The extension of lease periods to 990 years presents an opportunity for buyers to acquire properties with shorter lease terms at discounted prices and then extend the lease, adding value and ensuring long-term security. The Renters Reform Bill, mentioned in the King's speech, will eventually ban no-fault evictions in England. However, this will only come into force after reforms to the court system, which could take a considerable amount of time. BEST MOMENTS "I do think banning leaseholds for new homes is probably a good thing."  "It's tidying up the system a little bit... You've added value and you've got a bit more of a long-term security when it comes to that flat."  "The Renters Reform Bill, it will come into law at some point... but it will only come into force after reforms to the court system."  "From a landlord's point of view, it's an absolute pain in the backside."

In this episode Mark talks about one of his favourite films: the 2010 British historical drama film "The King's Speech" directed by Tom Hooper and written by David Seidler. Inspired by actual events, the films stars Colin Firth as Prince Albert, Duke of York - the future King George VI - who struggles to cope with a stammer that he has had since he was a child, which over time has lead to him experiencing moments of discomfort while performing the mandatory public speaking addresses that he is required to make as a part of his royal duties. In an attempt to seek out a treatment for the Duke of York's condition, his wife, Elizabeth (played by Helena Bonham Carter), persuades him to see the Australian-born Lionel Logue (played by Geoffrey Rush), a non-medically trained speech defects therapist, who almost immediately insists on calling the Duke of York the same name that his family members call him, "Bertie", and who over time demonstrates effective speech therapy techniques that help Bertie overcome his stammering. Against the backdrop of the death of Bertie's father, King George V, the coronation and the subsequent abdication of Bertie's brother David (King Edward VIII), and Britain's declaration of war on Germany in 1939, Bertie must work to traverse feelings of unworthiness, the potential damage to the royal family as a result of his father dying and his brother's selfish act of abdication so that he could be with the notorious Wallis Simpson (played by Eve Best), while working together with Lionel Logue to enable him to find a way to not allow his stammer to define him and debilitate him from rising to the occasion of becoming King and having to address and be a beacon of hope for the British people as they face the looming threat of World War. The film also stars Guy Pearce as King Edward VIII, Timothy Spall as Winston Churchill, Derek Jacobi as Cosmo Gordon Lang, Jennifer Ehle as Myrtle Logue, Michael Gambon as King George V, as well as a cast of other wonderfully gifted actors who play characters and depictions of recognisable real life people who have influenced the world. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message
