En 1973, Elton John sort son 6e album "Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player", piano meilleur ami d'Elton John. Crack open the champagne. Mardi Gras Anthems is celebrating it's 21st edition in March 2024 with 21 featured artists. The annual Sydney Mardi Gras party falls on the first weekend of March this year so in readiness for that, I'm releasing this milestone edition in advance. This set epitomizes the term "Anthems" with tracks from legendary divas such as Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Kelly Clarkson, Deborah Cox, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Britney Spears, Taylor Swift, Madonna and the list goes on. There is even an appearance from legendary 80's dance floor divas Evelyn Thomas and Miquel Brown. There are mixes from remixers' across the club spectrum including Mike Rizzo, Block & Crown, Country Club Martini Crew and the always fantastic Wayne G, 7th Heaven and Russ Rich. Each year I badger two of my favourite remix artists - Division 4 and Dirty Disco for copies of their early release and private remixes and every year they very generously provide me with them. I know I sound a bit like a broken record when I say this, but their generosity in doing this for me is so greatly appreciated and changes the landscape of how I approach and assemble these Mardi Gras Anthems sets. I'll let the music speak (sing) for itself while you hit the dance floor for this year's Mardi Gras Anthems deep dive. Happy Father's Day! Papa John Castellano brings his sweet dulcet tones and joins us for this round of Encore! Find out how hard this game actually is, when we're not allowed to use any Billy Joel songs. It's like a Piano In The Dark!!!
Every now in then I get into such a great flow while I'm selecting tunes for a playlist and this is one of those times! Sometimes it seems as if the tracks call out to me. One by one they just leap out of my track collection and into my playlist. I was putting this set together in record time, until I got stuck lol! As it often happens I fall so deep in a groove I don't know how to get out of it. I like my sets to flow together seamlessly. I like for them to take you on a journey. I always try to have an hot intro that builds to a climax, then bring you to your final destination. But as a previously stated I got stuck. So I did what always seems to work for me and that step away from it for a while. This time I decided to look for some help from Nick Curly in a track I used in a previously recorded set. The Johnny D a Remix of "Piano In The Dark" worked perfectly. I try to bring you all fresh tunes every set. I constantly buy new music and immediately put it into a mix. Most times I only preview 15-30 secs of a track before I use it in a set. Yes from that short of a preview I decide, I like a tune and buy it, then later use it in a mix. I just get a feel for the track from a short preview. I'm usually hearing the entire for the first time as I'm recording it. I sometimes get a little surprise from the lyrics but that's ok too lol! This may seem a bit odd. I know some DJ's study tunes they know every beat and break. But this keeps the music fresh for me. It keeps me from getting burned out from listening to the same tracks over and over. It gives every set it's own identity, personality, flow. But every now and then I'll use a tune that I previously used. I also love to use spoken word in my sets whether it's already laid over a soulful house groove or I mash it with something. This set I think I used 4 tunes with spoken word kicking it off with "Welcome to My Club" building up to "Untitled Flow" and closing it out with "Obsession." This is a hot one so enjoy! Peace and love! 1. Welcome To My Club (Original) - Adam Rios Koffee 2. Hypnotizin - Kyoko Kamichichika, Masahiro Suzuki 3. Good Ol Love (Honeycomb Vocal Mix) - Honeysweet 4. Still Water (Lars Behrenroth Remix) - Rocco, Khensy 5. Demons Tremble (Marlon D’s Tremble The Demons Mix) - Marlon D 6. Untitled Flow (Kenny Dope & Franck Rogers Remixes)(Pressure-Pella Mix( Franck Roger Remix) - Ursula Rucker 7. Piano In The Dark (Johnny D Remix) - Nick Curly 8. Dee & Deaf (Pezzner Redo Remix) - Michelle Owen 9. Obsession (Jazzloungerz 2013 Mix) - JazzLoungerz, Rainy Payne
Happy Halloween everyone! Thought I would use this time to make a more seasonally dark mix, as it gives me an excuse to use some songs that may not normally make it onto my mixes. I never know what makes me like some dark songs... sometimes all it takes is a rightly timed woodblock or mystery tambourine. Lol. Although I do like a lot of darker, more electronic music, it is sometimes a lot more difficult to mix them together smoothly. In addition, I find that a lot electronic music tends to drone, so I needed to chop a lot of songs up. Do to all this, I actually had to spend quite a bit more time on this mix than most. I did manage to squeeze in one semi-discoey-house song on here, but it is called Piano In The Dark (a cover of an 80's song), so I would say it is still on topic. You can chalk it up to my queen-out moment for the mix and I got it out of the way at the beginning. You didn't think I could get away with not having one, did you? :-) A few songs do standout to me on here. Bleeding Love is of course not a new song, but I just ran across this mashup of it and Thriller a few weeks ago and Trypsin was kinda enough to share it. And what kind of spooky mix would it be without Thriller? I just thought it was kinda a fun mashup and loves me some Leona. I will tell you that Funkerman feat. Shermanology - Automatic is one of those simple songs that just really grabbed me a first listen. I'm not really sure why, but I think it has got to be the vocals. I almost wish there was an extended mix with more. The true standout here, though, is Plumb - Hang On (Dave Audé Extended Mix). Oh my gosh. This song gave me goose bumps the first few seconds I heard it. The lyrics are very touching and uplifting. Tiffany's vocals are pleading and gorgeous, with a very Imogen quality. Dave's mix is just perfect -- great breakdown/bridge and subtle builds. The whole production is just beautiful. I can't say enough good things about it.
