The Brown Bag crew celebrates the end of 2025 by recapping their most chaotic highlights, ranging from Mariah Carey’s viral "Bonnie and Clyde" stories about Tupac to the bizarre "Italian brain rot" taking over the internet. The comedy peaks during a high-stakes Homie Helpline where they debate if a girlfriend should pay to fix the car she keyed during a breakup, followed by the crew roasting Vic for his "one-year tattoo" and Angie for her bread-induced constipation.

Brenda K. Starr steps Behind The Rope. Brenda chats with us about what it was like to find success and hit it big in the late 1980's with her most well known song “I Still Believe”. We chat about some of her contemporaries at the time, Madonna, Whitney Houston, Cyndi Lauper, Paula Abdul, Tina Turner and Debbie Gibson. Speaking of contemporaries, a little known singer named Mariah Carey used to sing background for Brenda. One day Brenda handed a demo to Columbia Records Executive Tommy Mottola at a party on behalf of Mariah and, as they say in the biz, the rest is history. Brenda opens up about what Tommy was really like both as a person and as a Record Exec who helped launch her career. Brenda also discusses how she really feels about Mariah covering "I Still Believe”, which has now become one of her biggest hits, breaks down where Mariah's “diva” and “difficult” reputation originates from, and discusses how true she feels those monikers are. She spares no detail in explaining exactly why her and Mariah no longer speak and what she would say if she crossed paths with her today. Why does it not shock us that the name Wendy Williams comes up in this conversation. There was also Mariah's wedding and being seated at a table with both Gloria Estefan and Barbara Streisand. Of course, we delve deep into Mariah's “The Meaning of Mariah” book which hit shelves last year - Brenda shares her thoughts, discusses what is accurate and what she would like to rebut, Mariah's short lived reality docu series “Mariah's World” - Stella, Bryan, Nick Cannon, and the many misconceptions in the media about Brenda's relationship past and present with Mariah Carey. Merry Christmas from the basement studio. Season 7, Episode 16 kicks off with holiday energy, Frank's cookies, Mariah Carey impressions, and a friendly argument over whether this is the Joe Montana episode (it is) or the Dwight Gooden episode (absolutely not). Dan and Frank are joined by Alan “Action” Jackson and sound man Rich, and the crew sets the tone with laughs, old-school sports references, and the kind of festive chaos only a Christmas edition can deliver. The show opens with a quick run through MLB Hot Stove surprises, most notably the Pirates actually spending money, the Mets continuing their “clean house” approach by shipping Jeff McNeil to the A's (with cash attached), and a Moneyball-style analogy about teams paying to get rid of contracts. The Mets' bigger picture remains unsettled: Frank still isn't over losing Alonso, but he's holding judgment until the roster is fully built, especially given that pitching was the real issue last season. The crew also hits the Knicks debate (and the ongoing cheesesteak wager), before sliding into a quick fantasy football note as Alan celebrates making the Super Bowl with a team peaking at the right time. Then it's a full recap of NFL Week 16, starting with Saturday games and rolling right through Sunday:Eagles over Washington (29–18) to clinch the division.Bears over Packers (22–16 OT) in a controversial, windy game featuring injuries and a surprising “go-for-broke” overtime bomb.Saints over Jets (28–6) as New Orleans' QB continues to look like a real starter.Bills over Browns (23–20) in a tighter-than-expected win.Titans over Chiefs (26–9) as Kansas City's injury spiral continues.Chargers smashing Cowboys (34–17) with Dallas exposed by brutal run defense and wide-open play-action.Vikings edging Giants (16–13) as the crew questions the Giants' ultra-run-heavy approach and whether draft positioning is quietly shaping decisions.Panthers over Bucs (23–20) as Carolina takes control of a shaky division.Bengals steamrolling Dolphins (45–21) with Burrow and company lighting up the scoreboard.Jaguars over Broncos (34–20) in a major upset, with Jacksonville looking increasingly legitimate.Texans slipping past Raiders (23–21) in a game Houston “won” but didn't exactly dominate.Steelers over Lions (29–24) with Aaron Rodgers looking sharp—and the biggest controversy of the week: DK Metcalf's sideline altercation with a fan, resulting in a two-game suspension and a heated debate about fan behavior, accountability, and where the league should draw the line. The episode wraps with a strong message: most fans are respectful, but it only takes one person crossing the line to turn the entire spotlight ugly, especially when players are being baited into losing control.Special Thanks to:Fox Brothers Alarms - https://foxbrothersalarms.comFirst Baptist church of Phillipsburg NJ http://www.fbcpburg.org/
SHOW NOTES: Two of the most popular Christmas Songs (aside from Mariah Carey's cloying All I Want for Christmas Is You) are I'll Be Home for Christmas (Kim Gannon, Walter Kent, Buck Ram) from 1943, introduced by Bing Crosby; and Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas (Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane) introduced by Judy Garland in 1943, also. Frank Sinatra later recorded the canonical version of each of them. The year 1943 was in the middle of World War II. These songs, unrealized by many who hear them today and unaware of the origins, are not sincere expressions of happiness of holidays spent together. They are lamentations, expressing a wish to return home to the safety and comforts and love of family. They were meant to represent the soldiers in the Pacific and in Europe who lived in horrible conditions, faced the possibility of death daily, were often ill, too cold, too hot, and too lonely. The lyrics such as “Christmas Eve will find me, where the love light gleams, I'll be home for Christmas if only in my dreams,” and “We'll all be together again if the fates allow, but until then we'll have to muddle through somehow” (later “lightened” to “Hang the Brightest Star Upon the Highest Bough”) convey the intense nostalgia for better times. Think about that background as you consider Christmas this year. We still have soldiers away from home, in harm's way, separated from their loved ones. We're fortunate to have them, and we're fortunate for our freedoms and liberty. Merry Christmas!

We've been celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, for our final "classic episode" of 2025, we're revisiting our 2020 conversation with "All I Want for Christmas" co-writer Walter Afanasieff. Happy holidays and thanks for a great year of looking back together as we continue to look toward the future!ABOUT WALTER AFANASIEFFThirteen-time Grammy nominee and two-time winner Walter Afanasieff is best known for his collaborative songwriting and production partnership with Mariah Carey that yielded hit singles such as “Can't Let Go,” “Dreamlover,” “Hero,” “Without You,” “Anytime You Need a Friend,” “Butterfly,” “My All,” and “One Sweet Day,” a duet with Boyz II Men that was named ASCAP Song of the Year. It hit #1 in December of 1995 and stayed there for sixteen weeks—a record that remained unbroken for more than two decades. Their “All I Want for Christmas is You” was released in 1994 and has since become a holiday standard. It hit #1 on Billboard's pop chart for the first time in 2019, giving Walter and Mariah the world record for the longest period of time between a song's original release and its arrival at the top of the chart. In addition to his success with Carey, Afanasieff carved out a formidable reputation as a go-to producer of hit movie songs. After co-writing and co-producing the Gladys Knight single “License to Kill” from the James Bond film of the same name, he went on to produce “Beauty and the Beast,” “A Whole New World” from Aladdin, “Even If My Heart Would Break” from The Bodyguard, and “My Heart Will Go On” from Titanic, which became the best-selling single in the world for 1998. Additionally he produced “Some Day” from The Hunchback of Notre Dame and the Academy Award nominated “Go the Distance” from Hercules.Other hits from the Walter Afanasieff songbook include “Can You Stop the Rain,” a #1 R&B single for Peabo Bryson that earned a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Song, “Missing You Now,” a #1 Adult Contemporary hit for Michael Bolton, “If You Go Away,” a Top 20 single for New Kids on the Block, Savage Garden's #1 pop single “I Knew I Loved You,” and Ricky Martin's massive global hit “She Bangs.”The long list of additional artists Walter has written and produced music for includes Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Luther Vandross, Destiny's Child, Kenny G, Andrea Bocelli, Johnny Mathis, Kenny Loggins, Barbra Streisand, Christina Aguilera, Marc Anthony, Babyface, and Josh Groban. Did Dickens ruin Christmas? He was certainly a pioneer in exploiting its commercial potential. A Christmas Carol sold 6,000 copies in five days when it was published on 19 December 1843, and Dickens went on to write four more lucrative Christmas books in the 1840s. But in many ways, this ‘ghost story of Christmas' couldn't be less Christmassy. The plot displays Dickens's typical obsession with extracting maximum sentimentality from the pain and death of his characters, and the narrative voice veers unnervingly from preachy to creepy in its voyeuristic obsessions with physical excess. The book also offers a stiff social critique of the 1834 Poor Law and a satire on Malthusian ideas of population control. In this long extract from ‘Novel Approaches', part of our Close Readings podcast, Colin Burrow and Clare Bucknell join Tom to consider why Dickens's dark tale has remained a Christmas staple.

In this episode of Tunesmate, Ray and Marc break down Mariah Carey's “All I Want for Christmas Is You” becoming the longest-running No. 1 song in Billboard Hot 100 history. This year's AWS re:Inforce conference was larger and fueled by greater agentic capabilities. Part of the 451 Research team that was at the conference, Henry Baltazar, Scott Crawford, William Fellows and Melanie Posey, join host Eric Hanselman to explore the announcements and progress that's been made in expanding agentic capabilities and much more. As an incumbent infrastructure provider, AWS is looking to the top of the infrastructure stack to secure their advantage. A suite of developer tools, including the Kiro IDE, are looking to make the creation and operation of agents simpler. There was progress in FinOps, with greater cost transparency and support for partner opportunities in helping customers manage their cloud spend. There was also a more enthusiastic embrace of multicloud environments, with the introduction of AWS Interconnect, a service that provides easy and scalable interconnection with other cloud providers, with Google being the first and Microsoft Azure said to be in the works. 451 Research's Voice of the Enterprise (VotE) data shows dramatic increases in data migration volumes, making interconnection performance more critical. Send us a textWhat makes a Christmas song timeless? We set ourselves a deceptively hard challenge: pick the single most iconic holiday track from each decade, starting with the 1960s and ending in the 2010s, then fuse them into one perfect album side. Right away a pattern emerged—so many beloved songs weren't immediate smashes. They took years to climb, re-entered charts as rules changed, and found new life through radio, TV specials, movies, and, later, streaming. We start with Darlene Love's Christmas (Baby Please Come Home), released on the day of JFK's assassination and later crowned by time, then square it against Burl Ives' Holly Jolly Christmas, seared into memory by Rankin/Bass. In the 70s, Lennon and Ono's Happy Xmas reframed the “Christmas song” as purposeful protest while McCartney's Simply Having A Wonderful Christmas Time perfected the carefree synth sleigh-ride. The 80s deliver spectacle and sentiment: Band Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas birthed charity supergroups and Live Aid, while Wham's Last Christmas kept quietly climbing until it nearly topped the chart four decades later. The 2000s were a tougher hunt, but they showcase platform power. Faith Hill's Where Are You Christmas rides the Grinch soundtrack into perennial status as Britney's My Only Wish (This Year) evolves from TRL-era fluff to streaming favorite. Then the 2010s give us precision nostalgia: Kelly Clarkson's Underneath The Tree, crafted with Greg Kurstin to echo Phil Spector's wall of sound, stands shoulder to shoulder with Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas Is You, the modern juggernaut that finally reached No. 1 decades after release and returns every year like clockwork.By the end, we've got a front-to-back holiday playlist with a story: how classics are born, forgotten, revived, and ultimately adopted as tradition. Hit play, then tell us your decade winners, the sleepers we missed, and the holiday deep cuts you swear by. If you enjoy the show, follow, share with a friend, and leave a quick review—it helps more listeners find their new favorite December soundtrack. One idea. Six songs. Infinite possibilities...

As we close 2025 here on Vinyl Community Podcasts, the last BONUS TRAX segment of the year features a spirited debate amongst the SURFACE NOISE crew about the greatest (and worst) Christmas/Holiday songs in existence. Dishes were smashed. Names were called. And we find Arnaldo is not a fan of Saint Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmastime"....like the opposite of big fan. Like hates it, hates it.

Mariah Carey once lived under constant surveillance in her own home. Her husband planted cameras and recording devices around their prison-like mansion to watch her every move. He hired armed guards to follow her everywhere but the bathroom – the same armed guards who nearly shot Mariah's collaborators when she unexpectedly dipped for a 30-minute joy ride. Despite her record-breaking five-octave pipes, Mariah Carey didn't didn't have a voice in her relationship for years. And when she did finally speak up to get a divorce, that's when her husband's stalking ended…and his sabotage on her career began.
