It's Sydney Mardi Gras weekend and what better way to celebrate love...than with the re-release of this fascinating chat with Andrew Addie.Yes, today Vic and Hamish had a chat about alcohol in the gay community and how young LGBTQ+ people often turn to booze when isolated, experiencing low- self esteem or feelings unloved when family don't support their decision to come out. Vic delves into the history of the gay bar and find out why bars can feel like a safe haven for the community, sometimes the only place to feel accepted and how this can lead to too much partying, and Hamish, well, he spends the episode reminiscing about the time he got felt up in a hot tub with his brother.Unfortunately, for the gay community, Vic and Hamish are straight. (Boooooo!) So they decided to have a chat with the lovely Andrew Addie about coming out, leaning on booze to cope with mental health issues, delivering lube to the masses and what it's like being the only sober at Mardi Gras.Happy Mardi Gras Weekend Everybody!Show NotesSign up to our 30 Day Sober Tour Guide at www.soberawkward.comVic's book is out! From an early age we're told that that the dream is to find our soulmate, have the big wedding, and then live happily ever after. But for a long time, that fairytale was one only straight people could aspire to.On the day same-sex marriage was finally legalised in Australia, Stuart Henshall was proposed to live on national television. He and his fiancée became the first couple to ever get married at Sydney Mardi Gras, tying the knot on top of a giant wedding cake in front of the world's cameras. But the fairytale was short-lived. Stuart talks to Jill about the complex emotions of fighting for the right to get married, only to see it end in divorce. And they discuss whether gaining access to this traditional institution has imposed heteronormative pressures on LGBTIQ+ people to get engaged and marry, even if it's not what they really want.Stuart also talks about the power of shame and his journey to self-acceptance, and how he's learned to love his solo life. You can follow Stuart at @dvynepr.To stay in touch with Well Enough Alone, you can follow us on Instagram.@wellenoughalonepod or @jillstark__ or support the show and get subscriber-only early access to episodes on Patreon.Well Enough Alone is a Spare Room production. The spotlight is back on the culture of Australian Police again, after a year of gay-hate crime inquiry revelations, racism from a Northern Territory Police inquiry and just this month, the death of two men, allegedly at the hands of a NSW policeman. Crack open the champagne. Mardi Gras Anthems is celebrating it's 21st edition in March 2024 with 21 featured artists. The annual Sydney Mardi Gras party falls on the first weekend of March this year so in readiness for that, I'm releasing this milestone edition in advance. This set epitomizes the term "Anthems" with tracks from legendary divas such as Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Kelly Clarkson, Deborah Cox, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Britney Spears, Taylor Swift, Madonna and the list goes on. There is even an appearance from legendary 80's dance floor divas Evelyn Thomas and Miquel Brown. There are mixes from remixers' across the club spectrum including Mike Rizzo, Block & Crown, Country Club Martini Crew and the always fantastic Wayne G, 7th Heaven and Russ Rich. Each year I badger two of my favourite remix artists - Division 4 and Dirty Disco for copies of their early release and private remixes and every year they very generously provide me with them. I know I sound a bit like a broken record when I say this, but their generosity in doing this for me is so greatly appreciated and changes the landscape of how I approach and assemble these Mardi Gras Anthems sets. I'll let the music speak (sing) for itself while you hit the dance floor for this year's Mardi Gras Anthems deep dive.
For this special episode we interviewed one of our favourite return guests Diane Fieldes. Diane is a socialist activist and writer who participated in the campaign against police repression after the first Sydney Mardi Gras in 1978. She talks about the homophobia of those years, the violence of the police, and the triumph of the Gay Liberation activists who fought for their rights - including the right to protest.
