Your weekly guide to the music biz and how it all works. In this week's The Price of Music: an urgent-ish delve into the news that Morrissey has announced he wants to sell his ownership of The Smiths' songs… including a suggestion from Steve and Stu about how Johnny Marr might buy the songs off Morrissey via a gmail address that Morrissey put online. And then Steve and Stu take a deep dive into a fantastic question from listener Simon who asked: artists often say that they are not making enough money from music streaming but are artists REALLY worse off today in the music streaming age?To answer this, Steve and Stu wander down some... interesting pathways. They:talk to their Top Secret Sources in the artist and label world, and found out the answer… (which may surprise you);hypothesise about both Mazzy Star AND Bonnie Tyler's record contracts;chat to Spotify, which reveals to our dynamic duo about how much they paid Mazzy Star and Bonnie Tyler(!);wonder how being a ‘radio artist' pays compared to a ‘streaming artist';dig into artist deals: because the money paid from streaming doesn't go to the artist first;ask why the artists who ARE doing well from streaming platforms aren't talking about it?…and tangentially… is TPOM better to listen to on a treadmill than Hi-NRG house music? A brief discussion. And in the special post-show lock-in section just for our Patreon Superfans, Steve and Stuart prop themselves at the bar to chat about:The time Steve worked in a record shop for a day; and he immediately faced a quandary: which letter should he file PJ Harvey under?Steve gently chides Stu over his love of a Songs Of The Summer Stats List from TikTok, which includes a load of old nostalgia songsRadiohead are back – and how do you sell tickets to shows that will be massively-oversubscribed and make sure those tickets get to real fans? After Covid's impact, money spent on live music is up - and more popular than ever. But what were Steve and Stu's first gigs after Covid?A call for your suggestions of hard-to-file records! As ever, we welcome your feedback, emails and – in particular – any questions you might have about how the music biz works!Email us: thepriceofmusicpodcast@gmail.comSee you next week!Steve and Stuart======Support The Price of Music on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/ThePriceofMusicFollow Steve on X - @steve_lamacqFollow Stuart on X - @stuartdredgeFollow The Price of Music on X - @PriceofMusicpodFor sponsorship, email - joe@musically.com
In which The Curmudgeons revisit the zenith of the Britpop movement. And by 1995, there definitely was a movement in the U.K. The music defined the style and defined the discussion and defined the culture. The mania was such that the two biggest bands in all of Britpop, Oasis and Blur, ended the year embroiled in a hilariously nasty feud. Here, we discuss albums by those two bands and others by The Verve, PJ Harvey, Elastica, Pulp and Radiohead. Oasis won't look back in anger, and neither will we. The transgressive trailblazer celebrates 25 years since The Teaches of Peaches. A boundary-blurring blend of electroclash, sex-positive feminist themes, and fun. It would become a defining album of the early noughties, and kick off a career that made our heads spin time and time again.Peaches has been pushing the boundaries and conversations around gender and sexuality since the beginning, and she's someone I always relish sitting down with.So I've dug into my Take 5 archives this week to a chat I had with Peaches back in 2018 when I invited her to Take 5 with songs that bite. Seamus Murphy is an Irish photographer and filmmaker who has spent decades documenting life in some of the world's most challenging places—from Taliban-controlled Afghanistan to Nigeria's Boko Haram territories. Having left recession-era Ireland in the 1980s to teach himself photography in American darkrooms, Murphy has become that rare artist who moves seamlessly between conflict zones and recording studios, creating books of Afghan women's poetry while directing music videos that anticipated Brexit. Tyler and Seamus discuss the optimistic case for Afghanistan, his biggest fear when visiting any conflict zone, how photography has shaped perceptions of Afghanistan, why Russia reminded him of pre-Celtic Tiger Ireland, how the Catholic Church's influence collapsed so suddenly in Ireland, why he left Ireland in the 1980s, what shapes Americans impression of Ireland, living part-time in Kolkata and what the future holds for that “slightly dying” but culturally vibrant city, his near-death encounters with Boko Haram in Nigeria, the visual similarities between Michigan and Russia, working with PJ Harvey on Let England Shake and their travels to Kosovo and Afghanistan together, his upcoming film about an Afghan family he's documented for thirty years, and more. "Twenty-Something Ghosts" By Kylie Willow Shasho and The Captain Productions © Copyright shashoandthecaptainproductions.com All Rights Reserved. Lyrics: Twenty-Something Ghosts (Verse 1) I wake up in a room I don't remember Scrolling through a life I never chose Dreams I had at seventeen feel distant Now I'm chasing paychecks just to cope (Pre-Chorus) They said it gets better, but they never said when I'm tired of pretending I'm fine again (Chorus) We're twenty-something ghosts Haunting the halls of who we used to be Wearing smiles like armor In a war we fight silently We're not broken, just bending In a world that won't slow Trying to find meaning In the mess we call home (Verse 2) I text “I'm okay” with shaky fingers Delete the truth before I hit send I laugh at memes about depression Like it's easier to joke than mend (Pre-Chorus) They said “just be grateful,” but I'm drowning in doubt I'm screaming inside, but the volume's turned down (Chorus) We're twenty-something ghosts Haunting the halls of who we used to be Wearing smiles like armor In a war we fight silently We're not broken, just bending In a world that won't slow Trying to find meaning In the mess we call home (Bridge) But maybe there's beauty in falling apart In finding your voice in the dark Maybe the cracks are where light gets in And healing begins (Final Chorus) We're twenty-something ghosts But we're learning to breathe To turn pain into poetry And scars into peace We're not broken, just bending And we're not alone We're finding our meaning In the mess we call home Support us on PayPal!

The term supergroup is bandied around too often these days when a group of talented musicians from established bands try something together. It creates almost unrealistic expectations among fans of the respective members' bands, who are more often than not left disappointed due to the logical fact that this 'supergroup' is only one quarter or less of the band they are widely known for.Which is why HEAVY won't be labelling Bleak Squad a supergroup - although many will.Featuring the unlikely quartet of Mick Turner (Dirty Three, Mess Esque), Mick Harvey (Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, PJ Harvey, The Birthday Party), Adalita (Magic Dirt) and Marty Brown (Art of Fighting), Bleak Squad unite for the first time on their brooding, noir-rock debut LP, Strange Love, out now on Poison City Records. The album is a combined output of four seasoned musicians who have come together to express themselves musically in ways other than, as well as a continuation of, the music they are known and loved for. Prepare to put expectations aside and appreciate the music for what it is, rather than what you think it should be, as Adalita sits down with HEAVY to talk about the album and how Bleak Squad became a musical family. We start by asking how she feels about Strange Love."Great," she enthused. "It's great to finally have it out there (because) it's been in the making for quite a few years. We've been working on it since, I think, 2019, maybe? We got together and just jammed some stuff and recorded back then, and we've been working on it for a few years on and off because everyone's so busy with other things. So it's great to finally have it out in the world."We follow that by asking Adalita to dive deeper into the musical side of the album."Well, we really didn't know what we were doing," she laughed. "We just got together. Marty called us up and said, 'do you want to get together and maybe collaborate and see what comes out of it?' We all said yes and got together and brought in our own songs, or we brought in riffs and things that were half done and just to see if we could collaborate on it. And it was really great because straight away we clicked and there was real chemistry. The songs just flowed, and we decided to record it, and it was really low pressure. We didn't know what was going to come out of it, but we ended up having a record and then suddenly we're a band, and we're going to tour it."In the full chat, Adalita highlighted the collaborative nature of Bleak Squad, where each member contributed their own songs, resulting in a diverse sound. She praised her bandmates for their musical talents and emphasized the enjoyable, low-pressure environment that allowed for creative exploration. She also shared insights into her collaboration with Mick Harvey and Mick Turner, the instinctual approach to determining vocal parts, and the different challenges of writing and recording outside of her long-time band Magic Dirt. We talked about the formation of Bleak Squad and how it came about, what each member brought from their other musical projects to the project, their first live gig and how the nerves were, establishing a bond with her new musical partners, upcoming shows and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
In which The Curmudgeons hop into the phone booth and travel back to the time when Britpop ruled the world during the heart of the 1990s. What was Britpop? Most specifically, it was a call to rock 'n' roll arms by a swath of young, hungry bands peeved at America's cultural imperialism of the era. The music swayed and blasted with confidence, and its pop structures were tight, tuneful--and, as a result, titanic. We start this series of episodes in the early 1990s, in 1992 and 1993. We cover Britpop artists such as Blur, Suede, Pulp, Elastica and The Verve on this episode. Yet we also cover what we call "Britpop adjacent" acts like PJ Harvey, Radiohead and The Cranberries, whose own Britishness seeped its way into groundbreaking music they were making in their own right. It's fascinating to look at the entire creative evolution of an artist - how they started and where they are now. Of course, looking at what's been going on in their life, can feel quite invasive and voyeuristic, like prying into the inner sanctum of life, but hey, all in the name of research! Music and art (although I'm by no means an expert) often feels subjective and open to interpretation and honestly, for me, I love it when I'm challenged to think about what it means to me. This brings me on to relatability. Perhaps it's now an overused word that has been diluted of its relevance and meaning. But is it important for an artist to create work that its audience will find relatable in some way? Will it help the audience make their own interpretations if they can relate to it? Or is speaking with truth and honesty equally or more important? And what about good old fashioned escapism? What does that connection between artist and audience look like? I don't know why the work of my guest today makes me ask these questions! Maybe it's because his work often feels like it is accessing what's in the back of his mind but created in a way that feeds my own interpretations and connects in a way that tunes into my own empathy. His art was described as “loose and raw that straightaway imprints itself on the human imagination”. This is interesting because it is the consistency of that rawness - and honesty - that also runs through his music which again gets my imagination fired up. I hope you enjoy this fascinating chat with James Johnston, who came to prominence in the early 90's with Gallon Drunk and has also played with PJ Harvey, The Bad Seeds, Faust and Lydia Lunch as well as releasing solo and collaborative work of his own. He started painting in 2017 which is just going from strength to strength.https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. Well known indie artist Rebecca Pidgeon conceived of her upcoming release "Unillusion" (August 29th release)as a more relaxed and intimate recording from the start to contrast with the intricate, polished, layered sound of her most recent albums. When she discussed her ideas with Perdomo, he had her look at episodes of MTV Unplugged series and Rebecca decided then and there, "It felt like the right approach —minimal, human, with moments that are as stripped down as just voice and acoustic guitar." Pidgeon and Fernando went into the studio with a team of outstanding musicians: Perdomo (bass, electric guitar); Andy Studer (violin, viola), Eszter Balint (violin on "Monkey Man" and "Where is the Man"); Matt Tecu (drums); Rebecca on acoustic guitar and vocals. Together they recapture the unfiltered warmth and immediacy of her earliest recordings while showing impressive sonic evolution showcasing her ever-maturing songwriting. The album's lyric themes range from the epic to the deeply personal. Tracks like "Dasharatha" draw inspiration from the ancient Indian epic poem, the Ramayana, weaving timeless tales of jealousy, grief, and rebirth into contemporary idiom recalling work like Bob Dylan's "Isis" or PJ Harvey's retelling of the Biblical story of Samson and Delilah in "Hair." More personal tracks venture into raw, emotional territories, resonating with listeners on a deeply human level. Despite having a name that sounds like it belongs to a member of the Cramps, Austin’s Celestine Gravely‘s brand of rock is more attuned to the likes of Patti Smith and PJ Harvey, balancing the sounds of those eras and the power of their vocals with her own stamp of songwriting. Today I welcome Katy Horan to the show to discuss her new book, MURDER BALLADS. She painted each powerful illustration in the book and spent years researching these folk songs, which often depict young, beautiful, murdered women floating ethereally down a river. We discuss her process and background and, for my own curiosity, focus on songs by Johnny Cash, PJ Harvey and Nick Cave, and Nirvana's famous Unplugged performance. Send us a textRey Roldan stops by the podcast to talk about being Britney's Publicist, Interviewing Kurt Cobain, an interesting encounter with Bono, Fandom, and so much more.********Rey has seen a lot… and I mean A LOT. Twenty-six plus years as a publicist (since 1995) and a few years before that as a nationally published entertainment journalist, he's been around. Backstage, on the tour bus, in the hotel rooms, behind closed doors, in the conference room… he's witnessed almost all… but there's undoubtedly more that he hasn't seen. But it hasn't shocked him. In fact, it's intrigued him… challenged him… and at times, offered myriad choices of how to react and how to process. And that's the thing… nothing shocks him. Starting his journey into the lion's den that is the music industry, he was a journalist for a number of newspapers, magazines, and regionals across the country (and one or two overseas). He's interviewed Kurt Cobain, U2, Joey Ramone, Sinead O'Connor, Bjork, Polly Jean Harvey… oh, and Vanilla Ice… While journalism was his passion, it didn't quite pay the bills, especially in Boston. So he moved to NYC and jumped into Publicity. IRS Records, Mammoth Records, Grass Records, Jive/Silvertone/Zomba, KSA Publicity/Press Here, Island Def Jam… He worked with Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Hanson, Duran Duran, Sting, Brooks & Dunn, O Brother Where Are Thou?, Juliana Hatfield, Diana Ross, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Dresden Dolls, Charlotte Church, among hundreds of others. He did the label (indie and major) and indie PR thing but he was burnt out on doing publicity like a pre-defined template that labels determined, so he left the corporate world to start his own shingle with a focus on building profiles and strategies that weren't constrained by hard, constrained blueprints. In 2004, Reybee Inc. was born. Instead of sticking to templates, he and his team of professionals craft unique strategies to build solid foundations and build up from there, creating campaigns that focus on constructing artist careers that go beyond. His campaigns go forward and sideways, and rarely backwards (unless, of course, we're talking retrospectives, which, in that case, they go backwards too).Nearly two decades later, it's still going strong… in fact, it keeps growing… and growing… and growing. "Point #1," Chevelle's 1999 debut album, showcases the Chicago-based Loeffler brothers' fusion of alternative metal and indie rock. Produced by Steve Albini, known for his work with Nirvana and PJ Harvey, the album delivers a raw, unrefined sound that captures the band's early energy. Coming in at the end of the decades, it's not surprising to hear similarities to bands like Tool and Helmet, particularly in tracks such as "Skeptic" and "Anticipation," which feature syncopated riffs and dynamic shifts between aggressive and mellow passages. While the album's repetitive structures and lack of big hooks pin this is a debut, , "Point #1" definitely laid the groundwork for Chevelle's evolving sound and hinted at their future success in the alternative metal scene. Various line-ups reappeared over the years – as, indeed, did another three LPs – but this is the classic early line-up, captured in a four-song blast session for the BBC in early 1987. As well as featuring a handful of the Somerset-based group's best-loved songs, the session features a guest appearance from soon-to-be-legendary West Country-based PJ Harvey producer John Parish – masquerading as ‘Scott Tracey' for a spot of percussion and backing vocals! In episode 65 of the podcast I speak with the incredibly talented Chilean-American multi intrumentalist and producer - Alain Johannes. Easily one of my favorite musicians, Alain and has had an amazing music career working with artists like Queens Of The Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures, PJ Harvey, Arctic Monkeys, No Doubt and late greats Chris Cornell and Mark Lanegan. He also had an amazing debut into the 'band scene' along side numerous eventual Red Hot Chili Peppers members called "What Is This" and eventually went on to form and co-lead the amazing band 'Eleven' alongside his very talented wife Natasha Shneider until her unfortunate passing. We talk the Sound City players, Desert Sessions, engineering, production, songwriting, band life and so much more, check it out.For more on Alain, his story and his music, please visit - www.alainjohannes.comFor more on Travis Marc or the Musicians Mentor, please visit - www.musicians-mentor.comFor our partnership with the lovely folks over at Soundbrenner, please visit - https://www.soundbrenner.com/pages/affiliate-travis-marc
Preorder Special Backstage Package from TrubornPreorder the regular edition from TrubornPunk is horror. Horror is punk.Though there seems to be a particular empathy between punk music and horror, the concern could be, if you were to collect a bunch of horror stories themed to punk rock songs, wouldn't they all just be the same thing - more or less? Not when William Sterling and his band of scribes get together, because one of my favorite things about this anthology is how unique of an approach each author took to the assignment. A particular standout is Liz Kerin's story Down By the Water (inspired by the PJ Harvey song?) In which a girl rebels against her controlling parent - which seems pretty foundational punk - only the whole story seems set on some fairy tale seaside community with witches and sea monsters (maybe). Such a creative approach to the theme of the book! There are fourteen more songs beside, and I'll let you discover them on your own. Suffice to say, I really enjoyed the book, and loved to have William Sterling and Brian McAuley on to give some insight into the book's inception through it's upcoming release.I'll plug once more ordering from one of the above links directly from Truborn. In times like these, creative folk need all the direct support they can get. If you order the Backstage Package, I think you even get a backstage pass! For the YouTuberly folks: This is a public episode. Well, sit right down, my wicked son, and let us tell you a story, about the subject of this year's Discord & Rhyme holiday episode: the Pixies! (Or technically, just Pixies.) Hailing from Boston, the alternative rock quartet dealt with mounting intra-band tension with little to nothing to show for it financially, leading bandleader Charles Thompson (alias Black Francis) to break up the band via fax in 1991. But the band's critical stature gradually grew to gigantic proportions in the ‘90s, as their albums influenced bands like Pavement, PJ Harvey, Radiohead, Weezer, and especially Nirvana, who built an entire movement out of the classic Pixies “quiet-loud” formula. When they reunited for a reunion tour in 2004, they found, much to their shock and awe, that their songs had grown into anthems. Their 1989 album Doolittle is arguably the peak of their original run, featuring songs that could plausibly fill an arena without sacrificing their scrappy indie energy, so join Rich, John, and Dan as they sail away on a (festive) wave of mutilation.Cohosts: Rich Bunnell, John McFerrin, Dan WatkinsComplete show notes: https://discordpod.com/listen/153-pixies-doolittle-1989Discord & Rhyme's merch store: http://tee.pub/lic/discordpodSupport the podcast! https://www.patreon.com/discordpodMalört: The Redemption of a Revered and Reviled Spirit by Josh Noel: https://www.joshnoel.net/malort-book
Yes, Dot Hacker's lead vocalist Josh Klinghoffer played guitar with Red Hot Chili Peppers for 10 years - trigger warning for some - but before forming in 2008 all four members were already established musicians, recording and touring with an impressive list of respected artists including: Beck, Gnarls Barkley, PJ Harvey, The Butthole Surfers and Broken Bells amongst many others. This week's guest, musician/audio engineer Layla Moheimani, fell instantly under the spell of the band and their lush, architectural-yet-still-rocking debut release 'Inhibition'.
