Right now, as you listen to this, your larynx is trying to kill you. This isn't metaphorical. Your voice box sits dangerously low in your throat, creating an intersection where food and air must cross paths every time you swallow. No other mammal has this problem. Horses can drink and breathe simultaneously. Newborn humans can nurse and breathe at the same time. But somewhere between three and six months old, your larynx descended, and you joined the only species on Earth that regularly dies from eating dinner.

In this episode Rosie Moss speaks with Laura Plowman, who lost her partner Gavin to terminal cancer just months after the birth of their son. A former police officer, Laura shares her journey of love, loss and survival with breathtaking honesty and quiet strength.Laura and Gavin met through work in 2018, their relationship moving quickly from first dates to buying a home and welcoming a baby in June 2020. Just five weeks after symptoms began, doctors told them his cancer was incurable, with a prognosis of only 12 to 18 months.Laura describes becoming both a new mother and a caregiver to her paralysed husband. She shares tender and painful memories: their backyard wedding, Gavin's choice to stop chemotherapy in favour of quality time, his voice notes recorded for their son, and the mixture of dark humour and fragile intimacy that helped them endure. “It was beautiful, yet horrendous, yet unfair,” Laura reflects of Gavin's final hours, a line that captures the raw and contradictory landscape of this conversation. Now parenting their child alone, Laura speaks about helping him grieve a father he will never truly know, rediscovering moments of joy, and leaning on therapy, music and widow communities for strength. Her story is devastating and hopeful, full of love, loss and the small ways life carries on.This conversation explores:Laura's whirlwind love story with Gavin, from awkward first impression to cohabitation, engagement and parenthoodThe devastating collapse in the garden that led to a terminal diagnosis five weeks laterBalancing medical treatment with quality of life as Gavin chose to end chemotherapyFragile and intimate moments: a backyard wedding, shared hospital jokes and voice notes for their baby sonFacing death together, from syringe drivers to spirituality to Gavin's final hoursNavigating solo parenting and helping a young child grieve a parent they will never fully knowRediscovering life through therapy, music and widow support communities where grief and laughter coexist

Dave Brisbin 10.12.25 Watching a friend of twenty years wind her way through cancer treatment and now hospice care has been a master's course in radical, serial acceptance. Just yesterday, to abruptly realize that the cause of her new pain was now moot—that no one was looking for causes anymore, only the management of pain—was another level of reality to absorb. I saw it in her eyes, but just for a moment. Then an implied shrug, and the conversation continued. It's that ability to recover from the shocks of life that shows us who we are. You can call it resilience, but it's more than that. We're generally taught that spiritual maturity means moving beyond doubt, despair, anger—being untriggerable. Thank God the gospels show us Jesus wasn't all that. We see his anger in the temple, his doubt at Gethsemane, his despair on the cross. But then we see his quick recovery back to center, reconnection with his deepest identity: not my will, but yours…forgive them, they don't know what they do. Life is an oscillation between constantly changing circumstance and neurochemistry. Between pleasure and pain, triggers and recovery. We have no control over emotional onset or the events and circumstances that trigger it. And we're not responsible for what we can't control. Spiritual maturity isn't measured by a lack of triggers or negative emotion we can't control, but the speed of our recovery. Return to center. Remembrance of who we really are. And who is that? Looking in the eyes of a newborn, whose brain is still formatting like a new hard drive, there are no thoughts or concepts. But there is presence. A presence that can't be defined in words because it precedes them. It's this presence that simply accepts what it experiences, absorbs without labels or the weight of prior experience, reminds us of the vastness we've lost in adult preoccupation. We can cultivate newborn eyes through spiritual discipline, or we can wait for life to drive us into serial acceptance. Or both. The eyes of a newborn and those of a friend in hospice…they are the same. They see what we've forgotten. Death is not the tragedy. It's not remembering while we live.

Why do some toddlers nap like champs while others refuse entirely? In Part 1 of our Napping Spectacular, Craig and Arielle unpack what the science says about total sleep needs, how nap patterns change across infancy and early childhood, and the very real “art” of troubleshooting naps at home. We cover when to drop naps, how brain development (especially the hippocampus) affects nap transitions, what to do about short naps, and how to keep daytime sleep from stealing restorative overnight sleep. We also talk through safe approaches to contact naps and why it's normal for newborns to have unpredictable naps and periods of crying. Key takeaways Think in 24 hours: aim to balance daytime sleep with restorative overnight sleep. AASM consensus ranges: infants 4–12 mo (12–16 h), toddlers 1–2 y (11–14 h), preschoolers 3–5 y (10–13 h), school-age 6–12 y (9–12 h), teens 13–18 y (8–10 h). Nap transitions are tied to brain maturity; as memory systems develop, many preschoolers naturally nap less. Typical goals for many infants: at least two naps of ~1 hour each and ~10 hours overnight (individual needs vary). Independent sleep skills are the linchpin for extending naps beyond a single 30–45 minute sleep cycle. Watch sleepy cues, but remember boredom can masquerade as tiredness in older infants. Contact napping can be soothing, but it's risky if the caregiver is truly exhausted—prioritize safe sleep. Newborn naps are erratic; you can practice gentle routines, but you can't “schedule” a newborn. Consistency across naps and nights helps babies learn faster than a mix-and-match approach.
