Simon Cowell has built an entertainment empire on his ability to say exactly what he thinks and an uncanny ability to judge the public mood. From launching Pop Idol in 2001, The X Factor in 2004 and the cultural behemoth Britain's Got Talent in 2007, he has been at the helm of primetime around the world for over a quarter of a century. His TV shows and Syco record label have shaped the careers of everyone from One Direction to Little Mix, Susan Boyle and Leona Lewis. But his success hasn't come without its struggles. For the first time, Cowell opens up about his biggest failures and regrets - an extraordinary thing to hear from one of the most successful men on the planet. We chat about fame, bankruptcy, loss, being ‘obnoxious' and whether he has any regrets. Plus: what breaking his back and a near-death experience taught him and why he thinks we needs another referendum on Brexit. Britain's Got Talent is currently airing on ITV, and America's Got Talent celebrates its 20th year this summer on NBC. ‘The biggest risk is being safe' - Elizabeth and Simon answer YOUR questions in our subscriber series, Failing with Friends. Fáilte ar ais chuig eagrán nua de Ar An Lá Seo ar an 3ú lá de mí Aibreán, liomsa Lauren Ní Loingsigh. I 1965 tháinig an nuacht amach go raibh 1,000 oifigeach den stát nach raibh ag obair a thuilleadh – bhí siad mar ionadaí de státseirbhíseach, múinteoirí gardaí agus an airm, chuala siad gearán den Aire Airgeadas dá dhearcadh chuig a pinsean. I 1998 bhí an National Irish Bank I dtrioblóid mar tháinig an nuacht amach go raibh siad ag tógáil níos mó airgead as a chustaiméirí. I 1998 bhí Tiobraid Árann ag imir I gcoinne Cill Chainnigh ag Staid Semple ach tháinig an nuacht amach nach mbeadh John Leahy ag imirt de bharr gur gortaíodh é. I 2014 faoi dheireadh bhuaigh an club rugbaí ormand san Aonach Urmhumhan. Tar éis 9 mbliain bhuaigh siad an Roinn 2A. Sin Run DMC le It's Like That – an t-amhrán is mó ar an lá seo I 1998. Ag lean ar aghaidh le nuacht cheoil ar an lá seo I 1979 thosaigh Kate Bush a turas ceoil darbh ainm Tour Of Life sa Learpholl. Bhí na daoine a raibh ticéad acu an ádhúil mar dúradh go mbeadh sé 25 bhliain roimh a mbeadh Kate Bush ag déanamh turas ceoil eile. I 2011 chuaigh Adele chuig uimhir a haon sna cairteacha lena albam 21 agus d'fhan sí ann ar feadh 10 seachtain. Bhí amhráin ar an albam cosúil le Rolling In The Deep agus Set Fire To The Rain. Agus ar deireadh breithlá daoine cáiliúla ar an lá seo rugadh amhránaí Leona Lewis sa Bhreatain I 1985 agus rugadh aisteoir Eddie Murphy I Nua Eabhrac ar an lá seo I 1961 agus seo chuid de na rudaí a rinne sé. Welcome back to another edition of Ar An Lá Seo on the 3rd of April, with me Lauren Ní Loingsigh In 1965 nearly 1,000 retired state officers who were representing civil servants, teachers, gardai and the army, heard severe critcism of the minister for finance for his attitude towards their pension claims In 1998 The northern ireland wing of beleagured national irish bank was at the centre of fresh allegations of overcharging its customers In 1998 - TIPPERARY faced into a crucial National Hurling League clash against Kilkenny at Semple Stadium, but they would be without John Leahy who has been ruled out through injury. In 2014 – Finally, it was to be for Nenagh Ormond Rugby Club. After Nine years the wait for Nenagh Ormond to win promotion to Division 2A of the Ulster Bank League was over at last. That was Run DMC with It's Like That – the biggest song on this day in 1998. Onto music news on this day in 1979, singer-songwriter Kate Bush, then 20, kicked off her 28-date Tour Of Life at Liverpool's Empire Theatre. Ticket holders were particularly lucky, given that it would be another 25 years before Bush committed herself to another extended run of concerts. 2011, British singer-songwriter Adele broke a UK chart record when her second album, 21, spent ten consecutive weeks at No.1. Featuring the hits “Rolling in the Deep” and “Set Fire to the Rain.” And finally celebrity birthdays on this day – Leona Lewis was born in England in 1985 and actor Eddie Murphy was born in New York City on this day in 1961 – and these are some of the things he has done. I'll be back with you tomorrow with another edition of Ar An Lá Seo.

We are back due to popular demand with our 2nd Christmas Song showdown. Coldplay versus The Ramones, Ariana Grande vs Bob Dylan (there's a festive fight we all want to see) —who reigns supreme in the holiday music arena, perhaps Queen? Our lively banter delves into what makes a Christmas song truly memorable, contrasting everything from Leona Lewis's pop appeal to the punk energy of the Ramones. We plug into AC/DC's notorious attempt at a stocking filler and try to decide if Pop or Rock is the best genre for Christmas music. Of course, it wouldn't be a Christmas special without touching on the eccentric genius of Bob Dylan's festive album and Elton John's timeless contributions to the Yuletide soundtrack. We venture through the decades, from The Darkness to Christmas Lights and of course Wham!'s enduring "Last Christmas." Whether you're a rock enthusiast, a pop aficionado, or somewhere in between, there's something here for everyone as we revel in the diverse and timeless appeal of holiday tunes.Support the showTwitter - https://twitter.com/mccartneyinWebsite - https://mccartneyingoal.com/
From Huddersfield to Bangkok, pop fans - are you ready for an adventure? Join Joel and David as they kick start a new ‘Discovering' series where they each pick a hidden gem of an artist from the 2000s and select 5 songs from their catalogue for a taste test! Signed to Jive Records and launched in 1999, British pop starlet Ellie Campbell looked and sounded like a ready-made pop star here for the GMTV and Smash Hits audience! Despite having no formal singing or dance training, Ellie's warm soulful tone and star quality was undeniable. The Yorkshire songstress worked with same hitmakers behind Steps (Pete Waterman, Mark Topham, Karl Twigg), launched a handful of singles - including the UK Top 30 smash ‘So Many Ways' - and even found herself performing at the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras! Though she wasn't in the pop game for long, Ellie's bops are forever - and her self-titled album “Ellie” is a real gem! Before LISA from BLACKPINK, in the 2000s, the world had Thai pop princess Tata Young. Her crossover success in Japan, India, China and across Southeast Asia was pretty much unheard of. Thanks in huge part to her fun signature banger and your new favourite bratty anthem: ‘Sexy, Naughty, Bitchy' (co-written by legendary pop songwriter Savan Kotecha, who has worked with Ariana Grande, Britney, One Direction, and Dannii Minogue). Tata's catalogue of English tunes is top-tier, as she brings her Main Pop Girl Energy to songs that would be released in the West by Ashley Tisdale, The Cheetah Girls, Play and more. The writing credits on her three English albums read like a ‘who's who' of RBAY! royalty - Jamelia, Leona Lewis, Natasha Bedingfield, Samantha Jade etc. If you're liking this ‘Discovering' concept - let Joel and David know in the comments who you'd like us to cover next! Welcome to the Identity Theft Resource Center's Weekly Breach Breakdown for August 2nd, 2024. I'm Alex Achten, Director of Communications & Media Relations of the ITRC. Thanks to Sentilink for supporting the ITRC and this podcast. Each week, we look at the most recent events and trends related to data security and privacy. Today, I am going to talk about two events that you have probably heard about all over the news, and what it ultimately means for our digital footprint. When you think of footprints, many things come to mind. It may be something inspirational and purposeful. Or it could simply be the thought of someone leaving shoe marks in the living room after not following your house rule of no shoes! A lot of people probably think of the popular song “Footprints in the Sand” by Leona Lewis. No matter what comes to mind, there is another footprint we should probably be paying more attention to: our digital footprint. Like Madonna, Bono, Prince and Beyoncé before her, Adele is one of the great mononymous superstars of our time. Adele Adkins was born on May 5, 1988 in Tottenham, a working class town in northern London known best for its football club, Tottenham Hotspur. Her mom Penny Adkins, was only 18 when she was born and when she was only two, Adele's father upped and left for Wales; he would never be in the picture as Adele grew up. From the age of 4, Adele began to sing at every opportunity she would get. When the Spice Girls emerged, young Adele would become obsessed with the Girl Powerful group. In 2016, she would tell Vogue, “People always think I joke about this, but the Spice Girls blew up when I was seven, and seeing them coming from a humble background — there was hope in it. It was really a massive part of my life when the whole Girl Power thing happened.” When she was 11, her mum and stepdad moved her to West Norwood in south London, which she would immortalize in her 2007 hit “Hometown Glory.” It was there that Adele would fall in love with contemporary R&B and the big, classic voices that would shape her voice in the years to come. “Hometown Glory,” was first released in October 2007 as a limited 7-inch on a small label called Pacemaker. The song didn't do much until it was re-released the following year by XL. But the buzz was growing for Adele. As 2008 arrived, she became the youngest artist ever to win the BBC's Sound of 2008 award, which is selected by music critics and industry figures searching for the UK's most promising new music talent. She also took home the Critic's Choice Award at the BRITs, which was given to the top rising star. Soon after, Adele released her debut album, 19, on January 28, 2008. She named it 19 because, well, that's how old she was when she recorded the album. It didn't take long for critics and fans to fixate on her age, and how mature she sounded for someone who was only 19. Adele was quickly popping up everywhere on both sides of the pond. 19 was on the shortlist of nominees for the coveted Mercury Prize, which is awarded for the best album released by a musical act from the United Kingdom or Ireland.”Hometown Glory” popped up all over TV, soundtracking huge dramatic scenes in countless TV shows like Grey's Anatomy, So You Think You Can Dance, Coronation Street and 90210. But perhaps the greatest achievement, at least in Adele's eyes, was one of her heroes, Beyoncé calling her “THE British singer,” separating her from the rest of the pack. Her followup single “Chasing Pavements” earned Adele her first Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, beating out her former classmate Leona Lewis. It was also nominated for Song of the Year and Record of the Year. Even bigger than that, Adele also won Best New Artist. Now with a lot more pressure on her, Adele was ready to record her followup album Feeling the raw sting of a recent breakup, Adele reached out to Paul Epworth in October 2009 and immediately they headed into the studio. She brought him a ballad she had begun writing a couple years ago about a boy, which he felt needed to be stronger and more aggressive in its arrangement. With Epworth's help they channeled the anger she felt from her recent split and used some guitar riffs he had previously written down. As the two worked together, Adele began to feel her heart race, which became the beat of the song. The two of them came up with the verses and the chords of the song in under 15 minutes, with the rest only taking about two hours. This is the true story of Adele's iconic song 'Rolling in the Deep' with newly unearthed footage from Adele herself! Rerun: All I Want For Christmas Is You has made Mariah Carey a fortune - but it took an astonishing 25 years for the song to finally reach Number One on the Billboard Hot 100; a feat it achieved on 21st December, 2019, becoming America's first festive-themed chart-topper since The Chipmunk Song in 1958. When originally released in 1994, neither Carey nor her co-songwriter Walter Afanasieff expected great things. Afanasieff voiced concerns that it sounded ‘like someone singing vocal scales', and Carey concluded that, at Christmas time, the public would always prefer to hear the standards. In this episode, Arion, Olly and Rebecca expose the bizarre corner of the internet that denies Afanasieff co-wrote the song; explore why so many people around the world, of all different faiths, identify with its message; and weigh up Kelly Clarkson and Leona Lewis's attempts to de-throne the diva… Further Reading: • ‘Mariah Carey is Christmas: The Story of 'All I Want for Christmas is You' (Amazon Music, 2019): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_Vhz5BiypU • ‘'All I Want for Christmas' Co-Writer Says Success Is 'Bittersweet'' (Variety, 2019): https://variety.com/2019/music/news/mariah-carey-all-i-want-for-christmas-co-writer-walter-afanasieff-interview-1203447527/ • ‘How Mariah Carey's All I Want for Christmas Dominates Charts' (TIME, 2019): https://time.com/5708874/all-i-want-for-christmas-is-you-mariah-carey/ ‘Why am I hearing a rerun?' EP. 24: INTERVIEW WITH ANNABEL LEECharles interviews Annabel Lee, a force in the underground Los Angeles music scene, packing every venue she plays (The Echo, School Night, Satellite, Moroccan Lounge, Hotel Cafe and more). Her current album MOTHER'S HAMMER is available on all D.S.P's. “Alt-rock killer Queen Annabel Lee is rising from the L.A. underground scene biting down a knife as sharp as the lyrics to her song. She started out kicking it in the New England scene, where she would develop that manic, live-wire stage presence and energy that's characterized her every step of the way. Lee seems to go berserk and believable rumors say that she has the power to induce that savagery in the audience as well.“- LADYGUNN ANNABEL LEE is also the creator and curator of the Sweat Gala, an annual multi-media, fine art rock showcase and art auction in Los Angeles. Annabel was direct support for one of Amanda Palmer's tours, and has had songs featured on shows such as Mrs. Fletcher (HBO), Lucifer (Netflix), The Rookie (ABC), and in a national ad campaign for Casper Mattress. She was booted off of Songland by Leona Lewis and Ester Dean said, “you're an artist, don't give away your song. . . I love everything about you.” Annabel's debut album ‘MOTHER'S HAMMER' released in March of 2023. “The alt-pop frontrunner rises to the tempestuous challenge of the debut album, impressing with the diverse and compelling project. A provoking, consistent and complex album, Mother's Hammer is a more than worthy entry into the pop-rock stratosphere, and leaves Annabel Lee poised for a big future.” - Wonderland Magazine 0:00 Introduction 1:40 Mother's Hammer and the inspiration for the album 4:48 Recording with Justin and “All of my Ghosts” 9:30 The creative process and going with the flow 10:23 Annabel Lee's musical influences 11:27 Recording “Los Angeles” 13:45 Different mixes for Annabel Lee's song 14:10 Recording of “Alas I'm a Lady” music video 22:41 New music and songs in the future 24:20: Merch drop and beyond 28:04 Recording and inspiration for Annabel Lee 35:12 Performing Live 36:00 Floating and meditation 40:00 Playback of “Sarah, Sarah” 43:44 Recording of “Sarah, Sarah” 46:04 Recording of “Los Angeles” + new video 50:00 What's on repeat for Annabel Lee Follow Annabel on IG: @yourannabellee Website: https://www.annabelleemusic.com/

Welcome back to the Tech Policy Grind! In this episode, we hit the road once again for our North American tour of some major tech policy conferences. This time, we head to the ICANN76 Community Forum in Cancún, Mexico, the Women in Cybersecurity (WiCyS) 2023 Conference in Denver, Colorado, and the IAPP Global Privacy Summit in Washington DC. The ICANN76 Community Forum is the 76th ICANN Meeting since ICANN's inception in 1998. Reema chats with Cindyneia Cantanhêde, a Brazilian data privacy attorney based in Sao Paulo, who was at the conference as an ICANN Fellow (along with Reema). The WiCyS Conference brings together women in cybersecurity to dig into substantive, technical conversations on what's going on in the field. But it also is a space for women (who only represent 25% of the cybersecurity industry) and allies to connect and get inspired about retention and advancement in the field. Reema chats with Lynn Dohm, Executive Director of WiCyS about the conference's history and goals. Then, she talks to Anna Lainfiesta, Security Team Lead at Zendesk about her experience as a WiCyS conference first-timer. Anna is also the Secretary of the WiCyS Privacy, Law and Policy Affiliate. Finally, Reema and Lama head to the Global Privacy Summit, where they led a session (along with Foundry Fellow Meri Baghdasaryan). Lama catches up with Leona Lewis, Senior Counsel, Privacy, Ethics and Compliance at Thrasio; Saleela Khanum Salahuddin, Attorney Advisor at Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board (PCLOB); and former Foundry Fellow Jacqueline Ahn, Senior Attorney of Data Privacy at IBM. My name is Sonita. I'm a 23 year old of Indian and Jamaican heritage. Music is one of my many goals. My main goal is to change my life. I am a singer/songwriter living in North London. I started singing at the age of 5 and would perform at school concerts up until I finished sixth form. I had no clue where to go from there. That's when my journey really began. Being inspired by musicals, specifically ‘In the Heights', I so badly wanted to find my voice in 2021 and began training with City Academy. Once that ended I auditioned to train with the West End Musical Theatre school and managed to secure myself half a scholarship. There are many artists that inspire me but the main ones are Jazmine Sullivan, Demi Lovato and Leona Lewis.

In April of 2001, then-break-out artist Jessica Andrews landed James his first #1 with the song ‘Who I Am.' He returned to the top of the chart in 2002, this time with country superstar Martina McBride and the song ‘Blessed.'As his chart success continued, Brett appeared on Billboard Magazine's top-ten country songwriters list for five consecutive years, the only writer to do so, and in 2006 reached yet another musical milestone winning ASCAP Songwriter of the Year. In 2007, Brett received the music industry's highest honor winning the Grammy Award for Best Country Song ‘Jesus Take The Wheel,' recorded by Carrie Underwood. The list of artists that have recorded songs penned by Brett James resembles a who's who in the country music list but also straddles genre lines into American and world pop music. Some notable pop artists to record James' songs include Kelly Clarkson, Jon Bon Jovi, Daughtry, The Backstreet Boys, Chicago, and Leona Lewis. Brett has also scored #1 songs in Europe and a worldwide top 5 Latin hit with the song ‘Todo Mi Amor' recorded by Paulina Rubio. Outside the writer's room, Brett's talents have earned production credits that include Taylor Swift, Jessica Simpson, Josh Gracin, and MCA recording artist Kip Moore whose single “Somethin' ‘Bout a Truck” was a breakthrough smash in 2012!https://www.facebook.com/BrettJamesSongswww.GaryScottThomas.com
