Born in Philadelphia, 1984; Matthew was raised by his mother, a doll sculptor, and his step-father, a jazz pianist. He studied clarinet, piano, drums, guitar and voice, but his favourite instrument was a Roland Groovebox 303 his step-father bought for him as a birthday gift.

Matthew attended Sarah Lawrence College for Musical Composition and Theory, where, as a freshman, he became the head sound technician. His job required recording and rendering all the concerts held on campus. While Matthew loved writing music, he soon discovered he loved recording music even more.
In 2005, Matthew left school to pursue his interests as a recording engineer. In 2007 he took up a job at Studio E in Philadelphia, where he recorded overdubs for the Grammy Nominated album “The Othello Syndrome” by Uri Caine. Matthew worked as an in house engineer until 2010 when he decided to begin freelancing. From that point his focus shifted from recording work to mixing.
Between 2010 to 2016 he worked with high profile clientele such as Ronnie Spector, Arrested Development, SisQo', Sonny Digital, and Dizzee Rascal. In 2013, Matthew mixed the album “Rosso” by King Midas which won the Norwegian Spellemann Award for Best Rock Album: 2013.
Matthew moved to Los Angeles in 2016 where he partnered with Kanye West's engineer Andrew Dawson running a commercial recording studio. A year later, Weiss became a technical consultant for the construction of a recording studio owned by multi-platinum recording artist Akon. Recognizing Matthew's talent, Akon asked him to be his personal recordist and mixing engineer. In 2019, Matthew received a Platinum plaque for engineering “Comentale” by Ozuna and Akon.

Matthew has recorded and mixed four albums and hundreds of B-sides with Akon. He has also mixed for artists Swae Lee, Jeremih, Chris Brown, Tory Lanez, Nicky Minaj, Becky G, Anitta, Rick Ross, Farruko, and Ozuna. Nicolle is the unicorn of the music business, she has it all. She's beautiful, oozing with passion and talent, fiercely committed to her family and friends, and oh yeah, happens to be one of the most successful songwriters in Country Music.  She's won ACM Song of the Year twice w Miranda Lambert's “Automatic” and Dan and Shay's “Tequila,” plus written multiple other #1 hits.  She's been on “The Voice,” and has an exhibit in The Country Music Hall of Fame.  But what I love most about Nicolle is her raw, honest heart. Yes her life appears perfect, but she's not scared to fail, or talk about her insecurities, struggles and the ups and downs of daily life. I love how she views fear and failure, and why she's not afraid to own her worth.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In times of deep sorrow or joy, humans have always turned to music. Archaeologists have found evidence of instruments among very early civilizations. Spiritual communities have centered on music for centuries. We teach our children their ABCs and how to brush their teeth with songs. We dance out our feelings and cry along with sad tunes. What is it about music that enables it to work so powerfully on our bodies, minds and emotions? That is one of the core animating questions of this conversation with Allison Russell. Russell is a Grammy-nominated singer and songwriter whose debut album, “Outside Child,” was named one of the best albums of 2021 by critics at NPR and The Times.Russell has played in bands including Birds of Chicago and Our Native Daughters, traversing folk, rock 'n' roll, Celtic music, the blues and other genres. But alongside her powerhouse vocals and gorgeous melodies, Russell infuses a deep scholarly curiosity into her songs — not just about the nature and power of music, but also what it can teach listeners about our world.Digging into archives and family history, she explores themes like generational trauma, our relationships to diaspora and migration and how music can build empathic bridges between us in times of deep division. But above all, her songs testify to the sheer human capacity for resilience: our capacity to transcend our darkest times if we hold on, reach out to one another and seek out art that helps console. In this episode, Russell performs four songs with a full band, so listeners can enjoy her infectious art. And then we use those songs as jumping-off points to explore the deeper ideas embedded in her music: why we fall into melodies so soon after our births; how music moves us differently from how books or speeches do; how sound can help regulate our emotions, slow our breathing and rewire our neural networks; how Russell's melodies and vocal performances come together in her mind; why songs can at times be more persuasive than nonfiction; why our unwillingness to divulge painful secrets goes back to the Victorian era; how generational trauma like the Middle Passage connects to personal trauma in the present; how Russell structures her songs to help people transcend profound pain; what message Russell would send to people who are struggling and much more. This episode contains references to sexual abuse.Mentioned:“The Transmogrification of Trauma into Art” by Allison Russell“Barley” by Birds of Chicago“Real Midnight” by Birds of Chicago“Songs of Our Native Daughters” by Our Native Daughters“The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” by Gordon Lightfoot“Take Em Away” by Old Crow Medicine Show“The Art of Disappearance” by Hanif AbdurraqibMusic and Book Recommendations:The Bone People by Keri HulmeA Fortune for Your Disaster by Hanif AbdurraqibBreaking the Thermometer by Leyla McCallaCarry Me Home by Mavis Staples and Levon HelmThis episode was guest hosted by Annie Galvin, the associate producer of “The Ezra Klein Show.” Galvin has covered books and music for almost a decade and hosted a season of “Public Books 101,” a public-scholarship podcast she co-created.Thoughts? He is preparing us for a future beyond our imagination. Live your life in a way that really points everybody to Christ over and over again. Time is a gift. If time is all you have to give, that is your greatest asset.   "Jesus fixes it all and success hasn't really changed anything. If anything, it's given me a lot more problems to navigate." —  Walker Hayes About Craig Cooper:  Craig Allen Cooper is a gifted storyteller, Bible teacher, and best-selling author of Glad You're Here, co-written with Grammy Nominated singer/songwriter Walker Hayes. What do Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, and the Grammys have in common? Tehillah Alphonso. I discovered Tehillah while reading my high school alumni magazine.  Tehillah and I both went to an all-girls Catholic school in Omaha, Nebraska. Marian High School was a place that encouraged young women to live a life of pride in themselves, their grades, their faith, and how they walk in the world.  And Tehillah has done this in spades.New-Jersey-born and Nebraska-raised, Tehillah Alphonso is a Nigerian-American musician based in Los Angeles, California.Though Tehillah was introduced to music at an early age, her musical endeavors truly began in 2014 when she was accepted into an elite teen summer intensive called A Cappella Academy.A proud Summa Cum Laude graduate of the University of Southern California, Tehillah received her B.M. in Popular Music Performance from the Thornton School of Music and was named the 2020 Outstanding Graduate. While a full-time student at USC, she served as Business Manager and Music Director of USC's premiere a cappella group, and five-time ICCA champions, the SoCal VoCals. Her time with the VoCals created opportunities to perform in legendary venues such as the Staples Center, the Rose Bowl, and Carnegie Hall.Shortly after graduating, Tehillah quickly made a name for herself as a session singer and vocal arranger. She has sung in a number of films and television series, including Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Affair, The Late Late Show with James Corden, Space Jam 2 (2021), Encanto (2021), and Sing 2 (2021). She has also shared the stage with notable artists, including NIKI, Björk, Billie Eilish, and Olivia Rodrigo. In November 2021, she was nominated for her first GRAMMY® Award in the category of “Best Arrangement, Instruments, and Vocals” for her arrangement of “A Change is Gonna Come” by Sam Cooke, performed by LA-based choir Tonality and conducted by Alexander Lloyd Blake,Tehillah shares her journey of growing up in the Midwest, and how it was her parents' work ethic that installed in her the motivation and drive to succeed in Los Angeles' music industry. She talks about how being a backup singer is exactly where she wants to be on the stage and blesses us with her strong and memorable voice by singing a capella live in this episode. What do a belief in yourself, hard work, and following your dreams have in common? Through song, she discovered that she could express things that she was not able to express in other ways, and gained a new confidence through writing and performing. She writes about trauma and resilience, about family, alcoholism, and her “three wars” growing up – Vietnam, her parents war with each other, and the war between she and her father, who served in the Korean War.  She has co-written songs with veterans through the program Songwriting with Soldiers. She writes about love, pride, and healing.  In today's episode, Mary and Ron speak about trauma, about the power of music to support healing for veterans and civilians alike, about pride, openness and being a member of the LGBTQ+ community, and so much more. ###THE ANNUAL RUN TO HOME BASE IS 7-30-22 THIS YEAR!
