“Is he just horny?” The Panel of Peril climb a big ol' mountain to claim a mythical prize to aid them in their epic quest. That prize is a DVD of this week's film; that quest is to watch that DVD, which is this week's film Krull (Peter Yates, 1983). Upon climbing back down the mountain, they are met well by this week's guest panel member, Matt Spectro! Prince Colwyn (Ken Marshall) and Lyssa (Lysette Anthony) are happily betrothed to be married, after which they will rule over the planet Krull, presumably with a lavender fist. Their son is also prophesied to rule over the galaxy, and so they, as you can imagine, are absolutely delighted. But the arrival of a warlord known as The Beast (Tim Dry/Trevor Martin) and his army puts the kibosh on their destinies. He means to take Lyssa's hand in marriage himself, and therefore rule the galaxy by proxy. Will Colwyn and the gang be able to locate the Black Fortress in time to stop him? Just what did the panel think of this week's movie, pray tell? How can they improve upon The Beast's prophecy-hijacking plan? It's time for a bit of sword and sorcery, swashbuckling adventures with the 1983 cinematic bomb, Krull. Though it flopped at the box office, Krull became a cult classic on video and a favorite of Dave's in the 80's. Chris on the other hand, will hate every minute of it. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, become a supporter. www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesback Plot Summary: In the face of total annihilation by the omnipotent Beast's unstoppable hordes of Slayers, the young aristocrats of two hostile neighboring nations--the brave Prince Colwyn and the fair Princess Lyssa--are about to come into union and form an alliance against the common enemy. However, the otherworldly adversary is all-powerful, and before long, a fateful abduction will trigger a desperate quest to the evil entity's grim Black Fortress, as Colwyn and a handful of mismatched defenders are willing to dice with death to ensure the land's future. In this suicide mission, the magical, five-edged weapon known as the Glaive is their only chance of survival. The success of Star Wars and blockbusters in general led to studios trying to emulate that success. In 1983 veteran film maker Peter Yates wanted to combine sci-fi, fantasy and swashbuckling to create an original film that follows Prince Colwyn and his group of outlaws on the planet Krull to save future queen Princess Lyssa from the Beast and his constantly teleporting Black Fortress, they named this film Krull, and despite it being such a huge production and merchandise it flopped spectacularly. Paul Nadin joins us to unravel this failed franchise attempt and to discuss how Hollywood studios often fail in their attempts to recapture success. All this and more on Adjust Your Tracking! If you love the idea of Lord of the Rings meets Arthurian legend meets Star Wars meets Dungeons and Dragons, then Krull is right up your alley.... While it's a movie with recognisable flaws, that doesn't mean my love for it is lessened in any way. Prince Colwyn's quest to save his Princess Lyssa from the evil Beast in the Black Fortress will always hold a very special place in my heart, despite the infanticide, the gruesome character deaths and the Slayers' brain worms. Seriously, those brain worms are nightmare fuel! Krull is a really special movie for me, it has a wonderful James Horner score, gorgeous special effects and character design, and ultimately the power of love will always defeat absolute evil. Who cares about script and character development?! Right?! I would love to hear your thoughts on Krull! GET IN TOUCH....
