The UK general election is now in its final stages and while the union-wide result hardly seems in doubt, each constituency and candidate has a story to tell. Here at the Hiraeth Pod we are recording a series of short interviews with new candidates who are contesting constituencies across Wales. These are new faces on the national scene and will no doubt feature in the 2026 Senedd campaign even if unsuccessful this time around. We plan to speak to each of the main parties in Wales, which we consider to be the ones standing in every constituency at the start of the campaign (though since then some have fallen away, as you are no doubt aware). So we will be sharing interviews with Conservative, Plaid Cymru, Green, Reform, Liberal Democrat, and Labour candidates as we try to uphold the values of public service broadcasting in the digital age. Met die nieuwe Dungeons & Dragons-film in de bios is het goed om eens de filmgeschiedenis in te duiken. In de jaren tachtig had je namelijk geen bestaande intellectual property nodig om avontuurlijke fantasyfilms geproduceerd te krijgen. Kwaadaardige laserschietende ridders uit de ruimte waren na het succes van Star Wars nog hip. Maar in Krull (1983) staan ze tegenover een heldhaftige prins, een stel gewiekste rovers, een cycloop en een tovenaar. Of ja... tovenaar... Toen de film uitkwam werd-ie meteen verkozen tot slechtste film van het jaar. Zwaar onterecht, vindt cultuurwetenschapper en scifi-kenner Edwin van Meerkerk. Hij verdedigt Krull al jaren tegen zijn vrienden, en krijgt daarvoor nu ook het meest geschikte platform. En al heeft de film genoeg tekortkomingen, host Ruud moet toegeven dat hij er een dikke bak plezier aan heeft beleefd. Prins Colwyn en prinses Lyssa gaan trouwen om hun families te verenigen tegen de dreiging van de duistere vijand The Beast, wiens zwarte burcht elke dag verplaatst naar een nieuwe locatie. Maar op de bruiloft verschijnen ongenode gasten: ridders met lasers, die de twee adellijke families uitroeien en de bruid kidnappen. Colwyn moet een legendarisch wapen vinden, en leren leiding te geven aan een zootje ongeregeld om zijn wereld, Krull, te redden.  En het gaat ook over hoofdrolspeler Ken Marhalls imitatie van Errol Flynn en het kleine trompetje van James Horner, en Edwin geeft terloops lekker even af op Coldplay. In which we meet our PCs: Colwyn, the Fox, an often-shirtless gadabout who serves as the town's midwife and is sleeping with a witch Winnie, the young Judge of Aratis, wielder of the hammer, who's family came to Stonetop a few generations ago and deposed Sianna the witch Torwen, the Heavy. Found as an infant at the Ruined Tower, covered in storm-markings, and raised as Colwyn's foster-brother. Destined for greatness, it seems, but so far he's mostly a drunken lout. Anwen, the Would-be Hero, driven by his father's sacrifice. Afraid that he's not cut out for this, but also afraid of what he's capable of.

Colwyn has rushed off on his own to the Ruined Tower, leaving Winnie to try and rescue Torwen... but she needs rescuing herself! Anwen shows up to help. Torwen, meanwhile, goes for Round 2 against the monster (with hands! and feet!). It flees! The three PCs regroup. Tensions flare! They decide to pursue the monster back to the Ruined Tower as a storm rolls in from the south!

Bethan gives Colwyn some news he doesn't want to hear. Winnie passes (questionable) judgement. A monster (with hands! and feet!) attacks the village, killing Winnie's uncle and maiming a neighbor. Winnie blames Torwen and his Stone-climbing, getting-struck-by-lightning antics for bringing this on them and Torwen runs off after the monster. Winnie and Colwyn follow. Hi-jinks ensue!

Colwyn (aka "Junior") Burchall, Jr. is the author of two books, "Look for Me in the Whirlwind: A Story of Marcus Garvey" and "Freedom's Flames: Slavery in Bermuda and the True Story of Sally Bassett". He is currently working on his third children's book, entitled "Freedom Song" tentatively scheduled for publication in 2011. He is also working on an anthology titled "A Song For You: Black Men On Father Hood, Father Hunger and Healing". Junior is also the editor and sometimes contributor to the "Black Daddies Club Weekly" column is Sway Magazine at http://swaymag.ca/category/people-community/black-daddies-club/ . The Black Daddies Club (BDC) is a Toronto, Ontario, Canada based organization that ; was founded in 2007 by Brandon Hay in response to the lack of forums and spaces for Black men to discuss parenting issues as well as the issues facing the Black Community as a whole. The main goal is to change the image of the black father in the media, from a neglectful figure to a responsible, involved and loving role model. Junior was born in Bermuda and is married with two sons (six and two years old). He is now living in Toronto. Junior states "that my main existence now is being a father".
