My guest on the show today is Matt Dinniman, author of the Dungeon Crawler Carl series, which is seven books into a projected 10 volume run.I happened upon the book when I was trawling Kindle unlimited for science fiction to read. It kept recommending it to me, and I kept resisting, because it was hard to take seriously a novel called Dungeon Crawler Carl. Finally I gave it a try, and literally within about three weeks I'd burned through all seven novels in the series, each of which runs around 600 pages or more. They are a blast: hilarious, absurd, propulsively plotted, just an immense amount of fun. Matt and I talk about the series, which was initially self-published but has now been re-issued by a big commercial publisher and is being adapted for television by Seth MacFarlane. We talk about his career prior to the recent success, when he mostly made his money by painting cats and dogs. We talk about changes in the publishing industry, and more. I enjoyed talking to Matt, who is precisely the kind of person you want enjoying this kind of unexpected mid life success. This is a public episode.
Welcome back, my fellow creatives!Yup, I'm back to looking at the first five pages of various stories, for those five pages can make or break the engagement of a reader--or an agent. So, let's scope out the stories of others to see how they hook an audience! This series was originally published independently, and grew such a following it's now got a traditional publishing deal. Good for Dinniman, I say, because these first five pages are bang-on. Heck, I spent the first half of my podcast dissecting the first page. The first few sentences alone share a lot of information."The Transformation occurred at approximately 2:23 A.M., Pacific Standard Time. As far as I could tell, anyone who was indoors when it happened died instantly. If you had any sort of roof over you, you were dead. That included people in cars, airplanes, subways. Even tents and cardboard boxes. Hell, probably umbrellas, too. Though I'm not so sure about that one."We don't know what The Transformation is, but the scope of death alluded to by the narrator is shocking. We also have a sense of the narrator's sense of humor and unreliability with the extent of his examples but uncertainty if he's right. As readers, we have to go along with the narrator, and as the paragraphs progress, we don't mind. The narrator is a principled guy who won't let his ex-girlfriend's cat die, and because of that he's alive when The Transformation happens. By the end of five pages you learn a lot about the protagonist Carl, his skill set, his relationship with Princess Donut the cat, and what The Transformation looked like through his eyes. And if that's just the first five pages, I can't wait to see what the next hundred have to share. Let's see what next month's find will teach us, shall we?Read on, share on, and write on, my friends!

Welcome back to Mining Media where we turn your binging into better TTRPG experiences by telling the next episode or next book "You will not break me," and soldiering on anyway because goddamnit, Donut, someone's gotta try and save all these ideas. This month we're talking about the absurdly popular (and deserving) LitRPG book series Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman. These books follow Carl and his ex-girlfriend's prize show champion cat Donut into a televised level-0 funnel on the newest season of Dungeon Crawler World, a popular galactic game show where survivors fight through 18 levels of awful dungeon in hopes of making it out some kind of alive. This series is 1) hilarious, 2) way better than it has any right being, and 3) somehow has you crying over the most insanely out-of-pocket characters in truly deranged dungeon level concepts, but it's full of great ideas, too! And it's the 2nd book series we've done on Mining Media that is actually getting a TTRPG! I've been sick, so this is all you're getting for a description this week. This week, Sam and Hannah have spent some serious time on the dock where they ... actually read the same book for once! Amazing. And it's maybe not a book you would have guessed. Plus, we've got a long-lost classic and a really fun summer read (even if it's about rich people. Again), and a good discussion of what makes a 14+ book. On the agenda this week: - "Dungeon Crawler Carl," by Matt Dinniman, which Sam and Hannah both decided they liked quite a bit, even though it's very much a "dude-bro" sort of book. It's a sensation. You should give it a shot. - "Best of All Worlds," by Kenneth Oppel, which is a well-targeted YA novel with an original set-up and a very sweet coming-of-age story. Also, set in Canada, which is fun. But is it really Canada?!? - "Ramona," by Helen Hunt Jackson, which is an absolute classic, and was once fully canon, but has sort of now been largely forgotten. Sam's here to tell you it's an important work of American literature and legitimately a must-read book in understanding the foundation of America. - "These Summer Storms," by Sarah MacLean, which Hannah describes as "if Emily Henry wrote a book of Succession (like, the television series)." Highly entertaining and good for the beach.

Welcome to the 96th Episode of the ABC Pod the Adult Book Club where we drink and we read things. This episodefeatures Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman. Discussion of the book starts at the 12th minute. We make a few guesses at where we think this series is headed and then finish with Russ' final recap from his Wheel of Time journey and revealing what's on the next episode. Enjoy!

The Buddies ventured into Matt Dinniman's Dungeon Crawler Carl, a lit-RPG novel. A lit-RPG novel, for those of you that don't know, is basically a story told more like a video game RPG (we're guessing, as this is our first time ever reading one).
