Visit our Substack for bonus content and more: https://designbetterpodcast.com/p/jordan-mechner As a kid in the 80's, Eli fell in love with games on computers like the Apple II, Commodore 64, and later the Amiga and Macintosh. One of the very first games he played was called Karateka, which was inspiring for the realistic movements of its digital karate antagonists, even on a black-and-green Apple II monitor. Our guest today, Jordan Mechner, created Karateka while an undergrad at Yale University in 1984, and it went on to be a commercial success. He followed it up with the game Prince of Persia (you'll hear a clip from the soundtrack in the introduction, which Jordan's father composed and which Jordan invented a way to transpose onto the Apple II's tinny speakers before game soundtracks were widespread on the machine). Jordan documented the creation of the game in a wonderful published version of his diaries called The Making of Prince of Persia, and we spoke with him about how he taught himself the skills to build successful video games in a pre-internet era, why he journaled about his work process (and what it taught him), and about his new graphic novel Replay, a memoir recounting his own family story of war, exile and new beginnings. Book & links mentioned Journals: Steven Soderbergh, Michael Palin, Brian Eno Hobonichi Techo John August The World of Yesterday, Stefan Zweig Bio Jordan Mechner is an American author, game designer, comic book artist, and screenwriter, best known for creating the iconic video game Prince of Persia in 1989. He relaunched the series with Ubisoft in 2003 and wrote the original screenplay for the film adaptation produced by Disney in 2010, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. This work is considered a timeless classic and has spawned a global transmedia franchise, with over 20 million games sold to date. Since 2017, Jordan has been living in France, where he made his debut as a full author with his autobiographical graphic novel Replay. Among the albums he has written are Monte-Cristo (with Mario Alberti), Liberté! (with Étienne Le Roux and Loïc Chevallier), and Templiers (with LeUyen Pham and Alex Puvilland), which appeared on the New York Times bestsellers list. His latest works were first published in French, with English editions following in 2024. Jordan's video games, such as Karateka (1984) and The Last Express (1997), are recognized for their cinematic storytelling and innovative use of rotoscoping. In 2017, he received the Pioneer Award from the International Game Developers Association. Jordan also wrote and directed Chavez Ravine: A Los Angeles Story, an award-winning documentary broadcast on PBS. He has published his development journals, The Making of Karateka and The Making of Prince of Persia, as well as an adaptation of the Persian tales Samak the Ayyar. A passionate artist, he keeps a sketchbook journal, regularly sharing his thoughts and drawings, a testament to his love for art and storytelling. *** Premium Episodes on Design Better This is a premium episode on Design Better. Send us a textWhat happens when a big-budget blockbuster has all the right ingredients but still fails to fully satisfy? That's the puzzle at the heart of our deep dive into 2010's Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, a film that cost hundreds of millions to make but couldn't capture the magic of its video game source material. The conversation kicks off with an examination of Jake Gyllenhaal's bewildering accent and lack of charisma as the titular prince – a critical misstep that creates a void at the center of this action-adventure. "It's the worst accent of any leading man in a movie," we conclude, comparing his performance unfavorably to the natural charm of Brendan Fraser in The Mummy or the cast of Pirates of the Caribbean. The film's salvation arrives about 40 minutes in with Alfred Molina's scene-stealing performance as a tax-evading ostrich racer. His character breathes life into a previously lifeless movie, demonstrating exactly what was missing from the start: humor, heart, and genuine entertainment value. We discuss how supporting characters often make or break these big adventure films, and how Prince of Persia failed to understand this crucial dynamic. We also break down the disappointing direction choices that plague the action sequences – the choppy editing and shaky camerawork that obscure rather than showcase the parkour stunts that made the video games so special. For a franchise known for fluid movement and graceful acrobatics, the film's inability to properly capture these elements represents a fundamental misunderstanding of its appeal.Join us for this entertaining analysis of blockbuster filmmaking gone awry, and why some adventure films become beloved classics while others remain forgotten curiosities. And don't forget to tune in next week for our take on "The Gorge" starring Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy!Written lovingly by AIBe our friend!Dan: @shakybaconTony: @tonydczechAnd follow the podcast on IG: @hatewatchingDAT

British actress and producer Gemma Arterton has led a long-running and diverse acting career, with many roles to her name. She made her film debut in the 2007 comedy St Trinian's and made her mark in the 2008 blockbuster Quantum of Solace as a Bond Girl. Since then, she's gone on to star in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Clash of the Titans, The King's Man, and Rogue Agent - and she stars in the TV series Funny Woman. Her newest role sees her playing a budding actress being blackmailed by a powerful critic in the 1930's-set thriller The Critic. She says she was drawn to the role when she first got word of it - and working with Sir Ian McKellen was a 'privilege'. "It was one of the biggest privileges of my whole life, really, working with him - so it was a no-brainer, really." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's time for us to tinker with time as we play Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, a 2003 action-adventure-platformer hybrid. It's a game both Chris and Ashley have very good memories of playing and have high hopes that it stands the test of time. Along the way, you'll find out how this game links to the Assassin's Creed series and Beyond Good and Evil, hear Ashley's awful eBay story and learn about Aristotelian unities. What a ride! Note: this was recorded way back in time (August 2023) when this year's brilliant POP game, The Lost Crown, hadn't even been announced, hence no mention of it. Nor had the currently-upcoming Rogue Prince of Persia. There's probably a clever analogy about time here but we'll let you fill in the blanks with that. So when Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time beat out a bunch of games to win the PS2 Patreon Poll, I was intrigued. And after playing the game, I totally get it. Sands of Time is awesome. I love these puzzle platforming-esque games, and you can see the DNA of so many gems from today in Sands of Time. The controls can be a little irritating at times, but the action, that dope rewind function, some humorous voice acting and the reasonably tight combat kept me invested for me entire 10-ish hour playthrough. My buddy Daniel played this one back when it came out. I finished it about 5 hours before we recorded. But 2 decades doesn't change the fact that a good game is a good game. And Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is a good fucking game. And before we play with sand, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks if I'm getting more concerned about game preservation as online stores on classic consoles start shutting down. Who are my video game crushes? And is "any" publicity for a game actually "good" publicity? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! It's time for move bad movies that did badly at the box office video game edition! This week, 2010's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time starring one Jacob Gyllenhaal as the titular Prince Dastan. It basically boiled down to this being Disney's attempt at another Pirates of the Caribbean but instead of turning out like Pirates of the Caribbean it turned out like that bad Pirates of the Caribbean. Send us a Text Message. The man best known as Baron Papanoida became an octogenarian this week and we lament how much more he accomplished in the first half of his life than we have in all of ours (YET).In other news, Hutch tears up trees with his bare hands to save a few quid, whilst Steff is vaguely annoyed that Eric Clapton didn't play his favourite song. We also discuss the merits of modern black and white movies and spend too much time on how we was robbed at Eurovision! In 2nd Chance Cinema Club, we talk all about 2010's ostrich epic Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Ok folks, it appears we've made a si able mistake. Somehow in making jokes about an invisible , we've seemingly made all s we try to type invisible. We were just goofing, you know, just getting ja y with our words. I don't know what deity has caused this. None of us are particularly ealous in our religious beliefs, yet this certainly implies some kind of digital force that has messed with what we can or cannot do. If it wouldn't cause a ba illion emails to get sent to us, I'd blame "Arthur Smarts" for this. In this episode: David hits the wall, Giovanni has heard enough, Tess keeps trying, Greg has gotta go fast. If you'd like to help us investigate this ontological phenomenon, consider joining our Patreon for as little as $1. Or you could always posit your theories in a review on your preferred podcatcher. Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we continue our series on Beyond Good & Evil. We talk about a number of the game's systems, compare it with Zelda, and engage with the level design and characters. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Past the Factory Issues covered: who said that line, characterization and Frenchness, aesthetics, cosmic horror and the Domz, Hub, lacking symmetry to promote alienness, diagetic design in its systems, the first trailer, a world you want to hang out in, quirky aesthetic, the camera and when you get control, night and day between two camera systems, the PC port, the "Zelda bucket," modularity and object-orientedness in Zelda games, clockwork, the photojournalism of it, doing things because the narrative demands it and not systematically, stealth vs combat, giving your companions power-ups, companions in combat, two-heart buddies, lock and key enemies, being able to bolt on mechanics, air hockey, keys that aren't keys through the characters, committing to the characters, The Myth of Zelda, making real statements, forgiving and fail-forward stealth, great camera framing, photojournalism as heroic act, the themes of information control and propaganda, what's with Alpha Section, keys that you can use in the inventory, Ubisoft and politics (Cuba, Myanmar and... A Video Game Time Capsule: The Complete History of Video Games, presented by MRIXRT @reallycool
The early 2000s, spanning from 2000 to 2003, were a whirlwind of change and innovation for the video game industry. In 2000, a culmination of creativity met technology, with Sony's PlayStation taking center stage and the indie scene gaining prominence. Video games started gaining a foothold as a recognized art form, while Sega gracefully exited the console market to make way for new players. 2001 saw a surge in console wars with the debut of the GameCube and Xbox, while storytelling in games reached cinematic proportions. By 2002, the allure of sequels reigned supreme, with franchises opting for familiarity, and the end of an era for Rare as Microsoft acquired it. The year 2003 then marked significant mergers, with giants like Square and Enix joining forces and Valve launching Steam. Video games officially became a mainstream industry, drawing in significant investments and changing the face of game development. As the lines between art, entertainment, and business blurred, the early 2000s set the stage for the future of gaming.Featured Games:The Sims, Diablo II, Deus Ex, Thief II: The Metal Age, Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn, Phantasy Star Online, Shenmue, Halo: Combat Evolved, Grand Theft Auto III, Oni, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Final Fantasy X, ICO, Onimusha: Warlords, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, Metroid Prime, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, Kingdom Hearts, Ratchet & Clank, Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Call of Duty, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Freedom Fighters, and Viewtiful Joe. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★ (00:00) - Episode 6 (00:06) - 2000 (21:54) - 2001 (46:35) - 2002 (59:37) - 2003 Thanks to our monthly supporters FS Tabreez Siddique Mynx Mopman43 Ritsu William Kage Studio Devil Dallay_g Razu John H The Golden Bolt MykonosFan ErbBetaPatched Vornak Killer Space Serra Mr. Lindsay Autocharth History With Kayleigh Benjamin Steele Nick Makris minimme
This one comes from a land, from a faraway place, where the caravan camels... oops, that was almost a copyright infringement, and so is a lot of this movie! This week on The CineMeh Podcast, Josh and Ryan rip into one of the worst examples of cultural appropriation and ill-conceived casting ever devised in a video game movie. 2010's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time stands up as a perfect example of why representation in Hollywood is still so deeply necessary. A spiritual successor to S1E7 (we promise we did not plan the 7th episode symmetry), Aladdin and the Prince of Thieves, we break down how this movie could have been its own, fun franchise like The Pirates of the Caribbean but is so mired in poor casting decisions and a convoluted plot-line that it sinks an otherwise promising film. We are interested in your take! Do you find the casting issues and stumbling story as divisive and unwieldy as we do? Are we being too 'woke'? Or is this movie pretty... pretty bad? Find out our thoughts, and give your own! This week on The CineMeh Podcast! Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was released in 2010 and stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton, Ben Kingsly and Alfred Molina The CineMEH Podcast is a Slyjack Media, LLC production Like what you hear? "Jake JULYenhaal" concludes with a look at 2011's time-travel thriller, Source Code. But wait - was this legit hit actually meant to launch a franchise? We discuss the film's journey from spec script to movie to potential series starter, as well as diving into the movie itself. Do the story's logical and ethical hiccups hamper the film? Does it play fair by its own time travel rules? Is the man of the hour, Jake Gyllenhaal, better served here than he was in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time? And why the heck does Hollywood keep underutilizing Michelle Monaghan and Vera Farmiga? All this, and more! Our Twitter Our Facebook Our Instagram Our YouTube Trev's Letterboxd Chris' Letterboxd
We interrupt your regularly scheduled "Summer Surprise" programming to instead bring you "Jake JULYenhaal," a month dedicated to the failed franchise starters of Jake Gyllenhaal. First up, the 2010 video-game adaptation Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, a rare example of Gyllenhaal trying his hand at "action blockbuster leading man." Despite a poor track record for previous video game movies, Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer were confident this would be the next Pirates of the Caribbean mega-franchise. Well, clearly, that did not happen. So what went wrong? Does the movie live up to the games? Is the casting of the movie too problematic to look past? Is there any movie Ben Kingsley won't do?? We discuss all this, and more! Our Twitter Our Facebook Our Instagram Our YouTube Trev's Letterboxd Chris' Letterboxd

We have for you on the show today screenwriter and director, Boaz Yakin, The writer behind The Punisher, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, The Rookie, & Safe and directing, The Fresh, Remember the Titans and the comedy-drama, Uptown Girl among others.Growing up in a talented theatrical family, it was only natural for Yakin to pursue a life in film or some sort of performing arts. His dad, who was a teacher at Juilliard and a theater director enrolled Boaz into the famous Stell Adler script analysis class when he was only 17 years old. Thereafter, he tried out film school at US City college, later transferred to NYU, before quitting school after his first script was auctioned and got him in the door at 19 years old.At age 22, Yakin wrote his first produced film, Marvel's The Punisher. When Frank Castle's family is murdered by criminals, he wages war on crime as a vigilante assassin known only as The Punisher. In 1990, Yakin co-wrote one of the action films of the times, The Rookie, starring star boy Charlie Sheen, and Clint Eastwood who also directed the film. But his big hit came right after, FRESH, Yakin's directorial debut is an emotional coming of age story, that offers a realistic glimpse of the dangerous life in New York City's projects during the crack epidemic.Michael, nicknamed Fresh, is a 12-year-old kid running drugs for gangsters, notably Esteban, inspired by the chess lessons of his father, an alcoholic speed-chess master played by Samuel L. Jackson. Fresh devises and executes a brilliant plan to extricate himself and his drug-addicted sister from their hopeless lives.Next up for Boaz was directing the box-office smash. REMEMBER THE TITANS.Academy Award® winner Denzel Washington shines in REMEMBER THE TITANS. Based on real events, this remarkable story celebrates how a town torn apart by friction and mistrust comes together in triumphant harmony. After leading his team to fifteen winning seasons, beloved football coach Bill Yoast (Will Patton) is demoted and replaced by tough, opinionated Herman Boone (Washington). How these two men overcome their differences and turn a group of hostile young men into champions is a remarkable portrait of courage and perseverance. You and your family will never forget the Titans! His blockbuster smash, Now You See Me featured big industry names like Morgan Freeman, Jesse Eisenberg, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco, Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson, Michael Caine, etc. The $75 million budget film grossed $351.7 dollars. The plot follows an FBI agent and an Interpol detective who track and attempt to bring to justice a team of magicians who pull off bank heists and robberies during their performances and reward their audiences with the money.Boaz continued his blockbuster ways by working on the $200 million tentpole film Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, starring Jake Gyllenhaal.A young fugitive Prince and Princess must stop a villain who unknowingly threatens to destroy the world with a special dagger that enables the magic sand inside to reverse time.Boaz and I chatted about his creative process, the business side and political side of screenwriting and directing in Hollywood during this conversation. He was extremely raw and honest about what it really is like working inside the Hollywood machine.Enjoy this conversation with Boaz Yakin.
We're going back to a video game movie many (including those who worked on it) would rather forget, we're talking about Prince of Persia: The Sands Of Time. We talk about inappropriate casting, over editing, a poison cape, and the one actor who can save the entire day.
