Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.01.29.526133v1?rss=1 Authors: Albouy, P., Mehr, S. A., Hoyer, R. S., Ginzburg, J., Zatorre, R. J. Abstract: Humans produce two primary forms of vocal communication: speaking and singing. What is the basis for these two categories? Is the distinction between them based primarily on culturally specific, learned features, or do consistent acoustical cues exist that reliably distinguish speech and song worldwide? Some studies have suggested that important aspects of music can be distinguished from speech based on spectro-temporal modulation patterns, but this conclusion is based on Western music, leaving open the question of whether such a principle may apply more globally. Here, we studied the spectro-temporal modulation patterns of vocalizations produced by 369 people living in 21 urban, rural, and small-scale societies distributed across six continents. We show that specific ranges of spectral and temporal modulations differentiate speech from song in a consistent fashion, and that those ranges overlap within categories and across societies. Machine-learning analyses confirmed that this effect was cross-culturally robust, with vocalizations reliably classified solely from their spectro-temporal modulation patterns across all 21 societies. Listeners unfamiliar with most of the cultures could also classify the vocalizations, with similar accuracy patterns as the machine learning algorithm, indicating that the spectro-temporal cues used by the classifier are similar to those used by human listeners. Thus, the two most basic forms of human vocalization appear to exploit opposite extremes of the spectro-temporal continuum in a consistent fashion across societies. The findings support the idea that the human nervous system is specialized to produce and perceive two distinct ranges of spectro-temporal modulation in the service of the two distinct modes of human vocal communication. Spectro-spatial evolution of the CMB I: discretisation of the thermalisation Green's function

Spectro-spatial evolution of the CMB I: discretisation of the thermalisation Green's function by Jens Chluba et al. on Tuesday 18 October Spectral distortions of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) have been recognized as an important future probe of the early Universe. Existing theoretical studies primarily focused on describing the evolution and creation of average distortions, ignoring spatial perturbations in the plasma. One of the main reasons for this choice is that a treatment of the spectro-spatial evolution of the photon field deep into the primordial Universe requires solving a radiative transfer problem for the distortion signals, which in full detail is computationally challenging. Here we provide the first crucial step towards tackling this problem by formulating a new spectral discretisation of the underlying average thermalisation Green's function. Our approach allows us to convert the high-dimensional partial differential equation system (~1,000-10,000 equations) into and set of ordinary differential equations of much lower dimension (~10 equations). We demonstrate the precision of the approach and highlight how it may be further improved in the future. We also clarify the link of the observable spectral distortion parameters (e.g., mu and y) to the computational spectral basis that we use in our frequency discretisation. This reveals how several basis-dependent ambiguities can be interpreted in future CMB analysis. Even if not exact, the new Green's function discretisation can be used to formulate a generalised photon Boltzmann-hierarchy, which can then be solved with methods that are familiar from theoretical studies of the CMB temperature and polarisation anisotropies. We will carry this program out in a series of companion papers, thereby opening the path to full spectro-spatial exploration of the CMB with future CMB imagers and spectrometers. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.09327v1

GRB 080928 afterglow imaging and spectro-polarimetry by R. Brivio et al. on Wednesday 07 September Among the large variety of astrophysical sources that we can observe, gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are the most energetic of the whole Universe. The definition of a general picture describing the physics behind GRBs has always been a compelling task, but the results obtained so far from observations have revealed a puzzling landscape. The lack of a clear, unique paradigm calls for further observations and additional, independent techniques for this purpose. Polarimetry constitutes a very useful example as it allows us to investigate some features of the source such as the geometry of the emitting region and the magnetic field configuration. To date, only a handful of bursts detected by space telescopes have been accompanied by ground-based spectro-polarimetric follow-up, and therefore such an analysis of more GRBs is of crucial importance in order to increase the sample of bursts with multi-epoch polarisation analysis. In this work, we present the analysis of the GRB 080928 optical afterglow, with observations performed with the ESO-VLT FORS1 instrument. We find that the GRB optical afterglow was not significantly polarised on the first observing night. The polarisation degree ($P$) grew on the following night to a level of $P sim$ 4.5%, giving evidence of polarised radiation at a 4 $sigma$ confidence level. The GRB 080928 light curve is not fully consistent with standard afterglow models, making any comparison with polarimetric models partly inconclusive. The most conservative interpretation is that the GRB emission was characterised by a homogeneous jet and was observed at an angle of 0.6 $< theta_{obs}/theta_{jet}

In this episode, I interview Kas Saghafi, associate professor of philosophy at the University of Memphis, about his book The World After the End of the World, published through SUNY Press in 2020. In this book, Kas Saghafi argues that the notion of “the end the world” in Derrida’s late work is not a theological or cosmological matter, but a meditation on mourning and the death of the other. He examines this and several other tightly knit motifs in Derrida’s work: mourning, survival, the phantasm, the event, and most significantly, the term salut, which in French means at once greeting and salvation. An underlying concern of The World after the End of the World is whether a discourse on salut (saving, being saved, and salvation) can be dissociated from discourse on religion. Saghafi compares Derrida’s thought along these lines with similar concerns of Jean-Luc Nancy’s. Combining analysis of these themes with reflections on personal loss, this book maintains that, for Derrida, salutation, greeting, and welcoming is resistant to the economy of salvation. This resistance calls for what Derrida refers to as a “spectro-poetics” devoted to and assigned to the other’s singularity. Britt Edelen is a Ph.D. student in English at Duke University. He focuses on modernism and the relationship(s) between language, philosophy, and literature. You can find him on Twitter or send him an email. Learn more about your ad choices. Mr. Darius Dinshah, author of Let There Be Light joins Dr. Elaina George for this week’s episode of Living in the Solution to discuss Spectro-Chrome Color Therapy, a modality that has been present since 1897. It uses the electromagnetic energy from visible light to restore cellular balance and support health. Spectro-Chrome and light therapies are garnering renewed interest as potentially beneficial in treating patients with COVID-19. As such, one  study recently published in the Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology on May 1, 2020 highlights this potentiality and is available for review on the National Center for Biotechnology Information under the heading, “Light as a potential treatment for pandemic coronavirus infections: A perspective.” Dinshah Health Society – Spectro-Chrome System, is the preeminent spectrum-based health system. Spectro-Chrome therapy is a safe, natural, inexpensive home-use medical system that does not rely on any drugs or chemicals, with their uncertain side effects. This system has been in use since 1920, and was used in a major medical center in Philadelphia, PA for many years.This system utilizes safe, specific colored light for particular problems with a simple, low-powered lamp and color filters. We all love Disney audio - from the parks, from the films, wherever we can find it.  So we decided to go one of the best online resources of music and sounds from the Disney Parks ... Spectro Radio But first ... Jason breaks down and admits that he has an eating problem - he eats to simply pass the time. We are pretty sure that's not in the realm of anything serious, but still ... it's a problem for him. More Jason news, as he realizes his cat is much more Woody Allen than Feline. Taren explains what "rap status stuff" is to Terrence, because nobody in the studio had ever heard of anything remotely like this. Then we get funky with Jeremy from Spectro Radio - why he decided to start an online Disney radio station, where he gets his audio from, and what exactly a "Spectro" is.  Sometimes, being a Disneyland fan can leave you in the dark about so much ... We also get into the Disneyland 60th Anniversary and what that means for the park, and what we can expect as fans. Before we let him go, we talk with Jeremy about his plans to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Disneyland, and how our listeners can join in!  Plus, every EarzUp! show that we record over the summer will be aired on Spectro as well, which is a huge honor for us. It was a great time, and I'm sure we'll have Jeremy back on in the near future!
