John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China  When I first saw John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China, it was a Pan & Scan VHS copy from my local video store. I immediately fell in love with one of the strangest and most imaginative films of the 1980s. The fourth collaboration between Horror icon, John Carpenter, and Disney legend Kurt Russell (doing an over the top and ridiculous parody of John Wayne), Big Trouble in Little China is a love letter to the Hong Kong Sword and Sorcery epics of the 60s, 70s, and 80s. With admitted and obvious inspiration from Tsui Hark's Zu Warriors from the Magic Mountain, Carpenter's fantasy swordplay epic would employ an almost entirely Asian-American cast led by Denis Dun as Wang Chi, Victor Wong as Egg Shen, and the great James Hong as David Lo Pan. This week Mr. Chavez & I discuss this movie with a focus on how the film stands up to charges of appropriation (lovingly created), Orientalism (questionable), and the White-Saviour trope (mislabeled). An American set, San Francisco and Chinatown comedy that lovingly and respectfully dives into the mythology of culture, history, and hero-making, John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China  is a comedy, that 40 years later, is as thrilling, funny, and exciting as it was when it premiered in the summer of 1986. The Sorcery of Nymph Circe, based on the second novel of Tomino Yoshiyuki's Hathaway's Flash light novel series, is a more complicated, dense, and challenging film than its predecessor, but also one that dives deeper into its characters fractured psyches. And along the way, it presents some of the boldest and most immersive 3D mecha animation we've ever seen, building to a climax that is absolutely staggering in both aesthetic and emotional impact. Remember the Black Knight from the movie Eternals (2021)? The Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends episode "Knights and Demons" actually does a better job introducing this character. Prior to the events of this episode, the Black Knight banished Modred (not to be confused with Mordred) to the Land of Shades, so Modred sends an enchanted gargoyle statue to Earth to steal the Black Knight's magic sword from a museum at the Spider-Friends' college. The gargoyle and the Black Knight both show up to fight over the sword in the NYC streets (and skies), so the Spider-Friends get involved, but they sure aren't helpful. The entire rest of the episode plays out like a Dungeons & Dragons game in which the Black Knight has surprisingly few points allocated to dexterity. Although, actually, it's not a Dungeons & Dragons game, because in this show, that game is called Sorcery & Serpents. Also, Peter and Bobby and Angelica are all members of the SCA, and we aren't even kidding about that bit.
