Ellen Leanse has a wealth of absolutely wild experiences through a career that seems to parallel much of the technology growth in the Bay Area. She worked with Apple during the Lisa and Macintosh launches, as well as with Google, Facebook, Samsung, and a variety of other fascinating organizations. With these experiences under her belt, Ellen has also taken on leadership and thought-leading roles, serving as an advisor and board member for several companies, as a teacher at Stanford, and an author for the book The Happiness Hack, a best-selling guide to the neuroscience of happiness and life satisfaction, and now as the Chief People Officer at Lucidworks! But on a personal note, Ellen is just extremely kind. She has been willing to give me some of her time to ask questions about her experiences and thoughts and to learn from her and I am extremely grateful for that. In this conversation, she tells a wild story from the early days at Apple. After that, the discussion moves towards the shift in perspective she’s had over the years. We talk about having a nonlinear career, finding satisfaction by chasing what you’re curious or nervous over, about doing work that will lead to leaving a positive legacy, and about innovating in technology. Ellen has eloquent and important thoughts, which I appreciated hearing and I know you will too. Imagine: It’s the 80’s. You are working for a sprouting tech company called “Apple.” Many of the products that your company makes have never existed, let alone been available to the general public for purchase. Your job is to explain not only what this tech does, but why an average consumer should even want to buy it.  If it sounds like a tough job, that’s because it is; but it’s exactly the job Ellen Petry Leanse took in 1981 at Apple. Her official assignment was to write a newsletter explaining how to talk to customers about Apple’s products and their capabilities. Apple had just gone public and Ellen was in for a wild ride with a company unlike any other, a company that would go on to change the world. In 1983, after a few years of on-the-job training and mentorship, Ellen was invited onto the extended Macintosh team where she became a product manager for Apple’s international products. This was at a time when Apple’s customers were not happy with the Apple II computer and Ellen recognized a disconnect between the company and its customers. To build a bridge between the two parties, she became Apple’s first user evangelist and created the first-ever digital community for a company to directly address user feedback. Ellen’s time at Apple was transformative for her professional career, but it also helped her realize her personal purpose. “A big part of my purpose is to think through how people come together.”  Ellen spent over 10 years at some of the world’s most successful tech companies such as Apple, Facebook, and Google before becoming an executive coach to business leaders and an instructor at Stanford University. Ellen also wrote a book titled, The Happiness Hack: How to Take Charge of Your Brain and Program More Happiness into Your Life, which dives into ways that we can rewire our brains to live a happier and more fulfilled life.  In her work today as Chief People Officer at LucidWorks, Ellen is “encouraging people to step more fully into the talent they know they have inside.” She is taking her wide-ranging experiences to create a culture of safety, experimentation, and equality. On this episode of Mission Daily, Chad and Ellen discuss Ellen’s extensive career from working at Apple to becoming an author, how she creates a culture of experimentation and risk taking at her current company, and how to bring more happiness and meaning into your day to day life.  —  Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org We own and operate a network of podcasts, and brand story studio designed to accelerate learning. The word that keeps coming up in this episode is “audacity.” Ellen Petry Leanse joins Melinda Byerley to talk about her experiences in the early days of Apple, when she served as Apple’s first User Evangelist. Proclaimed the “nerd queen,” she led the company’s first online debut in 1985 with one of the first BBSs. Her career is a parable of what happens when you are willing to take risks, work hard, and don’t worry about looking back. Ellen touches on how she views art as an integral part of product design, science, and business, and raises the question of whether today's atmosphere of innovation is truly letting curiosity reign. Greatly respected throughout Silicon Valley for her achievements, Ellen has been featured on CNN, CNBC, and NBC and in the pages of Time, Forbes, Vogue, and Business Insider. Currently, she teaches “Unleashing Creative Innovation and Building Great Products” for Stanford University Continuing Studies. MUSICAL INSPIRATION FOR THIS EPISODE ON SPOTIFY:"Imagine" by John Lennon LINKS MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: Ellen’s essay on the word “just”: "Google and Apple alum says using this word can damage your credibility" “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.”― Albert Einstein Ellen's bestselling book: The Happiness Hack: How to Take Charge of Your Brain and Program More Happiness into Your Life Happiness by design | Ellen Petry Leanse | TEDxBerkeley (video) “What I Learned About the Brain by Writing a Book About It” from Stanford University @ Fifteen Seconds Festival 2017 (video) ABOUT THIS PODCAST Stayin' Alive in Tech is an oral history of Silicon Valley and technology. Ellen's approach to advising innovators is grounded in neuroscience and evolutionary biology, and the conversation hits on the anxieties and fears that can keep entrepreneurs from trying risky new things, or keep them from abandoning unproductive old activities. Ellen's book "The Happiness Hack: How to Take Charge of Your Brain and Program More Happiness into Your Life" will be published in November 2017.
