What would it look like to reimagine our teaching as good work and see our students as made in God's image? Dive into Scripture and practical discussion with Kristi Schliep and Missy Takano, staff members at Black Forest Academy in Germany. "What God did at creation, He invited His people to then partner in that same kind of work." -Kristi "Human good work is like God's good work; it's intended to carry this same bringing order from the raw materials, creating space where life can flourish, carrying out God's rule and reign and intentions in the world for the blessing of others." -Missy "Humanity rebelled and that brought fracturing and brokenness into the created design, but it didn't undo the created design and it didn't undo the invitation to good work." -Missy "Sometimes we get caught up in viewing kids through the lens of Genesis 3, rather than remembering the original design." -Kristi "It matters that we acknowledge that our students are touched by the brokenness of the world, but that's not the full story." -Kristi "My job is to be faithful to cultivate the ground, and I'm going to have to trust that that season of fruitfulness may not be in the timing that I anticipate." -Kristi "When we acknowledge that God is the source of all things and He has invited us to participate, it's such a fun tension to live in because He is going to provide - He's going to provide all that we need, He's going to be the one to cultivate Genesis 1 in that classroom - and He invites us to participate." -Kristi "When students know that you are delighting in them, they will absolutely join you and engage." -Kristi "Recognizing our need for rest helps us to continue persisting in that Genesis 1 perspective." -Missy "[You] get to announce that the King is here in the way that [you] live in your classroom, and that's holy work." -Kristi "You're not alone. Your work is good. It's holy and sacred work. The students are the images of God. The same Spirit who hovered over the waters indwells you, so you are empowered for the work that God has called you to." -Missy Listen to Missy and Kristi on the Restoried podcast! In this episode, we share multiple presentations given by Paul Stamets, a leading mycologist and advocate for the medicinal use of fungi. He delves into the transformative potential of psychedelics, mycology, and their implications for healing and environmental restoration. Paul shares insights from his extensive research and experiences, including his work on the documentary Fantastic Fungi and his passion for uncovering the intelligence of nature through mushrooms. He discusses the remarkable capabilities of various fungi, from their medicinal properties to their role in ecological balance, and highlights the urgent need for a paradigm shift in our understanding and use of these powerful organisms. Although illegal as a Schedule I drug in much of the United States and beyond, two states have approved use of psilocybin mushrooms in therapeutic settings, and many more states are reviewing their policies. Schedule I drugs are defined as drugs with a high potential for abuse or drugs with no recognized medical uses. However, psilocybin mushrooms have had numerous medicinal and religious uses in dozens of cultures throughout history and let's face it, mushrooms are not addictive. Paul Stamets is one of the leading advocates worldwide for opening up the possibility of legalizing. Paul introduces listeners to several key mushroom species, and beyond psychedelics they have important medical and therapeutic uses in treatment of diseases. He emphasizes the importance of integrating Indigenous knowledge with modern science, revealing how traditional practices can inform and enhance our approach to health and wellness. With a focus on the potential of psilocybin mushrooms to address mental health challenges and promote community healing, Paul inspires hope for a future where fungi play a crucial role in both personal and planetary health. Send me a text! I'd LOVE to hear your feedback on this episode!Forget the roses. Let's talk about the chemistry and practice of love that your body can actually feel and your life can sustain. I explore why genuine connection lowers cortisol, boosts oxytocin, and smooths heart rate variability, and how the vagus nerve helps you shift from fight or flight to social engagement and calm. Along the way, I untangle the early attachment templates that shape how we seek closeness, react to conflict, and choose partners without letting the past dictate the future.I share practical, grounded ways to make love coherent: touch and eye contact to build trust, music and laughter to raise oxytocin, and gentle movement and breath to settle the nervous system. I also dig into belief work through BEAM Therapy to uncover and clear the subtle stories like, “I'm not enough,” “love is dangerous,” “I'll be abandoned”, that keep the heart braced. When those patterns soften, generosity replaces self-erasure, and alignment shows up as what you feel, what you say, and how you live moving in the same direction. For working with a reliable practitioner, I highly recommend Brenda Farrugia of https://www.sobrilliant.ca/.Pets get their moment too, because the research is striking: eye contact with your dog can raise oxytocin for both of you. Beyond sentiment, I talk rituals that outlast performative holidays, like handwritten letters that name growth and gratitude, and why boundaries are a love language for your nervous system. By choosing practices that bring you back to a steady exhale, you stop confusing chaos with chemistry and start building bonds that feel like home.If this conversation helped you rethink love, subscribe, share it with someone who needs it today, and leave a review on Apple or Spotify - tell me the one practice you'll try this week.Support the showPlease rate & review my podcast with a few kind words on Apple or Spotify. In anticipation of the upcoming season of Lent, we consider how the practices of fasting and lament can remind us of our humanity and orient our hearts toward the lost. Lent and Missions: A 40-Day Devotional The Upstream Collective "This physical need reminds me how much I need the Lord. So, it's not just the removal of something; it's a taking in of something." "Forty years in the wilderness for God's people and 40 days in the wilderness for Jesus were preparation for the fulfilling of God's promise, so when we're fasting, we're experiencing that wilderness so that when Easter comes, when Good Friday comes, it's a celebration." "The big theme is to pull back [...] and see the Bible as a book of redemption for all people." "[Lent] is an invitation to slow down, to rest, to lament sorrow, sadness, and brokenness, and then to turn our eyes toward the coming Sunday." "Experiencing Jesus and moving our lives toward Him and seeking to love Him in every way, a natural outworking is His heart and passion for others, which lead us to mission." "Our hearts can lament and long to see people come to faith. And then even as we live on mission, to embrace the reality, living a missional lifestyle, sacrificing for the sake of others, is hard. It's difficult, but it's good." "There is an invitation to slow down and experience Jesus, to practice something that could be life-giving." Together, they explore why questioning the system is not anti-medicine, how fear-based control has replaced true health care, and why the nervous system sits at the center of childhood chronic illness. This episode is a reminder that healing doesn't come from compliance. It comes from awareness, partnership, and trusting the wisdom built into the body and the family. In this episode, we are joined by Don David Wiley, a renowned teacher and elder who advocates in alignment with two living traditions, the Huichol (Wixarika) and Nahua of Mexico. He shares his profound insights on humanity's original relationship with the living forces of Nature, sacred fire, and weather beings. Through his teachings, we explore the importance of restoring the concept of sacred reciprocity, the role of ceremony, and the need for healing the planet by honoring our connection with the powerful forces of Nature. Join us as we navigate the complexities of tradition, modernity, and the wisdom of our ancestors in a quest to live harmoniously with the world around us. In 1996, Don David Wiley's life was profoundly altered when who would later come to be recognized as the Spirit of Fire, often called Grandfather Fire, appeared before him as an apparition in the garden of a meditation retreat center near Cuernavaca, Mexico. Grandfather sent David to study with two Indigenous elders, Don Lupe Ríos Gonzales of the Wixárika (Huichol) tradition of Mexico's Sierra Madres and Don Lucio Campos Elizalde of the Nahua tradition of the central highlands in formal medicine and ceremonial apprenticeships in these two ancestrally related Indigenous paths. As a result, David received an initiation as a mara'akame – or a shamanic healer, counselor, and ceremonial leader in the Huichol tradition. He was also initiated as a quiapaquiz (caller of the sky-waters, in Nahuatl) or granicero – or weather worker in Spanish, ceremonial leader, and healer from the Nahua path. He is well-known in traditional circles as one who lends his body as a human vessel to be the “god-speaker man” for Grandfather Fire. He is a healer, ceremonialist, and ritual leader in two ancestrally related Indigenous traditions from Mexico—the Wixárika mara'akame tradition and the Nahua path of weather working and healing. Devoted to the guidance of Spirit, he offers support and teachings to help people reconnect with heart, life, nature, and Divine through ceremony, awareness, and meaningful relationships. Send me a text! I'd LOVE to hear your feedback on this episode!Tired of being told to “lift heavy” and “push through pain” while your body begs for a different plan? Why isn't the other research ever cited? Is it because it's not so performative, not so sexy? I take a hard, honest look at why conventional fitness advice can fail women in perimenopause and postmenopause and what you might consider instead. From nervous system regulation to smarter strength, this could be a new map for midlife movement that respects physiology, protects joints, improves sleep and helps to regulate your nervous system, which is already on high alert during this important phase in a woman's life.I start by demystifying cortisol and stress timing: why evening HIIT and hot studios can sabotage rest, worsen hot flashes, and keep your brain wired. I share personal injury lessons from years of grinding, then shift to evidence-backed tools that calm the system and rebuild resilience. Qigong takes center stage with randomized trial support for lowering menopausal symptoms, improving mood, sleep, balance, and quality of life, all with minimal injury risk and small daily doses easy to sustain. You'll also hear a clear-eyed comparison of qigong, tai chi, and western yoga, plus a deep dive into the “hot yoga detox” myth. Sweat carries negligible toxins; your liver and kidneys do the real work. Active heat plus strain drives sympathetic stress, while calm sauna time can help you relax. The takeaway is practical and compassionate: regulate before you ramp up. Embrace consistency before intensity. Protect joint integrity before chasing aesthetics. Cultivate energy instead of burning it out, then bridge back to resistance bands, bodyweight work, and eventually heavier lifts when recovery is reliable. If you've felt pushed, shamed, or confused by one-size-fits-all advice, consider this your reset. You can be strong without breaking yourself, and you can feel calm without giving up progress. As parents, we often believe we know why our kids behave the way they do.We assume intentions, assign meaning to their actions, and respond from that story, often when we are stressed, tired, or triggered. But what if those assumptions are wrong? In this episode of Art of Raising Humans, we explore one of the most common and overlooked parenting mistakes, mind reading our children. This happens when we assume we know their motives without actually checking. We unpack why the parent brain does this under stress, what brain science and child development tell us about behavior, and how these assumptions quietly erode connection, trust, and cooperation, especially with tweens and teens. In this episode, you will learn:• Why the human brain jumps to negative interpretations under stress• How nervous system dysregulation leads parents to misread behavior• Why kids often cannot articulate their own motives and what that means for discipline• How curiosity builds safety, honesty, and long term behavior change• What it looks like to assume the best without losing boundaries• Practical ways to pause assumptions and respond with clarity and connection This episode is for parents who want to move beyond control, power struggles, and miscommunication and toward deeper understanding, cooperation, and trust. You do not need to read your child's mind. You need to make space for their voice. Should I expect to have an easy life following Jesus? Being a Christian does not mean comfort or ease, as culture would define it. Brian Delamont, Executive Vice President of TeachBeyond, unpacks Scriptural truths about blessing, contentment, and abundance from a Kingdom perspective. Deuteronomy 28 Psalm 136 Matthew 20:18-19 John 16:32-33 "When we face difficulties, when life is not easy, the Father is with us." "Life is not easy. There will be trouble. [...] However, take heart! I have overcome the world." "You don't give to get." Malachi 3:10 2 Corinthians 9:7-9 2 Corinthians 1:3-7 Genesis 2:15 "Being in God's creation and working it, taking care of what God had given, is part of God's original good plan for humanity. It's not an easy life; it's a good and meaningful life!" Genesis 3:16-19, 23 2 Corinthians 12:7-10 "God knows that an easy life isn't in our best interest [...] but an abundant life is in our best interest. It's His blessing, His presence, and His Kingdom." "Jesus does say that we will have trouble, but He is also with us in the trouble, so that's how we can take heart - because He has overcome, He is greater, He is kinder than whatever discomfort we are facing." Philippians 4:10-13 "It's not easy all the time, and we know it won't be, yet God is able to care for you, to bless you and to be with you, even when it's tremendously difficult." Send us a textIn this episode, Kay Suthar sits down with Phil Fraser to talk about a side of entrepreneurship that isn't discussed enough loneliness at the top. Phil shares his journey from being a “failed” accountant to building and eventually selling a multi-award-winning business in a multi-million-pound deal. Along the way, he learned why many entrepreneurs focus on what they like doing instead of what actually moves the business forward and the cost of that avoidance. They explore why it's okay to discover your passion later than everyone else, the reality behind “accidental” businesses, and a simple but powerful way Phil works through business challenges when things feel stuck. What to expect in this episode:(00:00) – Why entrepreneurship can feel lonely at the top (04:20) – From failed accountant to advertising and business ownership (08:10) – Why it's normal to discover your passion later (12:30) – The making of an accidental business (16:40) – Phil's PITA Patter Technique (20:10) – Looking at your business from the outside inAbout Phil FraserPhil Fraser is a business owner and advisor who founded, scaled, and sold a multi-award-winning online business in a multi-million-pound sale to a PLC. Women menopause and perimenopause take center stage as Matchmaker Maria sits down with therapist and women's health advocate Lauren Teitelbaum, author of Millennial Menopause, to talk about what's really happening in the body and why most of us were never taught this. They break down the truth that menopause is technically one day, while perimenopause can last years and affect mood, sleep, libido, brain fog, and vaginal health. Lauren explains why medical education around menopause is still limited, what treatment options actually exist, and why pain, rage, or exhaustion should never be brushed off. The episode also gives clear advice for partners on how to support women going through perimenopause without minimizing or mocking their experience. A must-listen conversation about women's health, intimacy, mental health, and preparing for a major life transition before it catches you off guard. In this episode, we feature Michael Parenti, who passed away this week at the age of 92. A prominent political scientist and cultural critic, he delivers a powerful lecture at the University of Colorado Boulder from 1986. Parenti discusses the intricacies of US interventionism, the dynamics of capitalism, and the historical exploitation of the developing world. He challenges conventional narratives about poverty in the Global South, asserting that these nations are not poor but rather over-exploited. Join us as we unpack his insightful analysis of imperialism, capitalism, and the ongoing struggles for social justice that our oligarchs and their political class have not seemed to learn the lessons from 40 years ago, as the stature of the U.S. erodes daily on the world stage, supporting endless war in Ukraine and Palestine, disastrous trade policies, and ongoing hegemonic and regime change operations in multiple countries. We re-air this Yellow lecture - referring to the poor 1980s video quality – because after the U.S war machine goes after Venezuela, Greenland, Iran, Cuba, Nicaragua, Colombia, who's next, this desire for hegemonic control from this failing empire will not stop until we all step up and make it stop. Send me a text! I'd LOVE to hear your feedback on this episode! When a good man turns quiet, slower to recover, and oddly distant, most couples assume it's attitude or boredom or maybe even an affair. What if the real story is hormones, sleep debt, vascular strain, and stress chemistry reshaping mood, identity, and connection? I take a clear-eyed look at men's midlife health - why testosterone can decline earlier than you think, how visceral fat and alcohol accelerate the slide, and why erectile dysfunction often points to cardiovascular issues long before it's “just a bedroom problem.”I walk through the signals men tend to ignore: loss of morning erections, irritability, low motivation, social withdrawal, brain fog, and that nagging sense of not feeling like yourself. I break down the difference between being “in range” and being optimized in your bloodwork, and outline the lab panels that actually guide change. This conversation also moves into the heart of relationships. When physiology changes, partners often feel rejected or unseen; understanding the body's role shifts the frame from blame to teamwork. We talk about men's reluctance to seek help, the data on midlife suicide risk, and how therapy that gives tools can rebuild agency. On treatment paths, I cover the trade-offs of testosterone therapy, why some consider HCG, and the importance of retesting every quarter so decisions follow data, not hype.If you're aiming to age well together, start here: measure what matters, protect sleep, lift regularly, drink less, and choose friends who support your goals. Parents are often told to “forgive yourself” or “you're doing great.” While well intentioned, that message often falls flat for parents who are thoughtful, reflective, and deeply invested in their growth. In this episode of Art of Raising Humans, we explore why self-forgiveness is most effective when it comes after responsibility, reflection, and repair. We explain the brain science behind shame, learning, and nervous system regulation, and why skipping reflection can keep parents stuck in cycles of guilt rather than growth. You'll learn how shame activates the brain's threat system, why responsibility is different from self-criticism, and what actually allows parents to change patterns without burning out. We also share a practical framework for reflection, repair, and growth that makes self-compassion feel earned rather than hollow. This episode is for parents who care deeply, are unlearning inherited patterns, and want to keep growing without shame driving their parenting. Listen to Part 1 of the story here: Episode 204 Four legs of the table of education are vision, people, materials, methods, with Christ at the center "[One of the biggest challenges] was finding the right people who understood the children that we were going to be working with." "We need to take care of our volunteer tutors and help them because they're being faced with awful situations that children should never have to face." "When we are teaching the letter f, we talk about father, friends, and you can bring up discussions about friendship and the lack of fathers, which is common for so many of the kids." "We play a lot of games and try to make the lessons fun." "We called it Open Schools Worldwide because the need was worldwide." "The need is worldwide, and God is good [...] We were dreaming big." "We didn't have to seek out growth. People came to us. The story spread." "When Angie, our director [...] tells me that we have 14,800 kids enrolled now, it just brings tears to my eyes. It's brilliant." "Pray about it and ask the Lord to open the doors." "I've always prayed that the Lord would open a door for something, and that if it was wrong, He would close the door and that I would accept the door closing. It's easy to jump after things; it's not so easy to say, 'Well, maybe that's not quite right.'" "I can't do something on my own, but praying for the right people to join me has been a way to move forward." "I was a very shy, retiring, quiet person, and if someone had said to me what was going to happen, I would not have in any way believed them." Most parents want their children to be responsible, capable, and independent. But when it comes to building habits, morning routines, homework, chores, hygiene, emotional regulation, many well-intentioned parents accidentally sabotage the process without realizing it. In this episode of Art of Raising Humans, Kyle and Sara break down the most common ways parents unintentionally derail habit building in kids, tweens, and teens, and what actually helps habits stick without nagging, shaming, or taking over. You'll learn why becoming the reminder, lecturing, rescuing, using shame, or expecting adult-level consistency backfires and how habits grow instead through ownership, scaffolding, realistic expectations, and nervous-system safety. This episode covers:Why habits fail when parents carry the responsibilityHow shame, anger, and pressure shut down learningWhat to do instead of lecturing or remindingHow to use visual supports and external reminders effectivelyWhy consistency matters more than perfectionHow to scaffold habits without creating dependenceWhat repair looks like when things fall apart This conversation reframes habit building as a developmental skill, not a motivation problem and offers practical tools parents can use immediately to reduce power struggles and build lasting responsibility. If you're tired of repeating yourself and wondering why habits won't stick, this episode will help you stop unintentionally getting in the way and start supporting real growth.
