    Ivy Insights

The Seeking Authenticity podcast is a hidden gem that I stumbled upon thanks to Flint's proud dad. From the moment I listened to the Anthropology episode, I was captivated by the thought-provoking conversations that this podcast offers. It's truly sobering to witness how science has been used to promote division in our world, but at the same time, these discussions serve as a beacon of hope, bringing us back to center.

What sets this podcast apart is Flint's gift for interviewing. He is a remarkably creative and focused individual, with a calm and collected demeanor that instantly puts guests at ease. The podcast feels like sitting in a room with friends and engaging in riveting conversations. The questions he asks are strong and insightful, allowing for deep dives into various topics. Moreover, his ability to connect with people on a tangible level shines through in every episode.

One of the best aspects of The Seeking Authenticity podcast is the lightness, humor, and overwhelming positivity that permeates each conversation. Despite tackling serious subjects, there's always an underlying sense of joy and optimism present. Additionally, Flint's ukulele solos on the intro/outro add a delightful touch to the overall listening experience.

However, no podcast is without its flaws. In the case of The Seeking Authenticity, one potential drawback could be its relatively small audience. Given its hidden gem status, it may not receive the recognition it deserves. However, this issue can easily be remedied by spreading the word about this exceptional podcast.

In conclusion, The Seeking Authenticity is an extraordinary podcast that offers valuable insights into life and how to find fulfillment amidst chaotic times. Flint's dedication to creating meaningful conversations shines through in each episode. This podcast is truly worth investing time in as it takes listeners on an enlightening journey towards self-discovery and authentic living. I eagerly await future episodes and highly recommend giving it a listen!

Roz Savage changed her life in her thirties, when through an environment epiphany, she completely shifted her direction from her current role in management consulting to become a world class adventurer. As you and I spent our days commuting to class or the office, she was rowing across the oceans for many months at a time, completely alone. She has completed the Big 3 oceans - the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian, and consequently become a powerful voice both for the environment and personal development. Appearing on numerous TV channels, talk shows, TED talks, and with 3 published books, the most recent of which, The Gifts of Solitude, being relevant to our situation in the pandemic, she has plenty of wonderful insight. In this conversation, I wanted to hear about her current adventure, where she has taken on a PhD. From this, we talk about her perspective on changing course in life, identifying, even if just through awareness, the areas of our life we want to redirect. She explains these thoughts with examples from her own life, and shares, what I believe to be a very inspiring message of hope - that our futures and the future of our world, are inextricably linked to our internal states of being. I had a lot of fun listening to Roz and her stories and I know you will too. I was introduced to Philip Godwin by Zach Smith, a former podcast guest who hiked the Pacific Crest Trail. Like Zach, Philip has found himself crossing the finish line of endurance events, doing several runs from 30 to 50 and even 100 miles at a time. In this conversation, however, before we dive into his path with running, we touch on the beginning of that journey. Dealing with obesity, a disabling injury, and tons of negative self-talk in highschool into college, Philip had to deal with some real personal challenges, mental and physical, before journeying into long-distance running. Likewise we talk about his first 100 mile run, which he used to raise nearly twenty-thousand dollars to start a fund in the name of a friend of his that passed away. If you feel like you’re in a rut, or even just moving a bit slower than normal, I think this conversation might help you turn that around. I loved hearing Philip’s take and I know you will too, enjoy. -----Podcast IG: https://www.instagram.com/seekingauthenticitypodcast/Podcast Website: https://seekingauthenticity.buzzsprout.com/©Flint Mitchell

After that, however we talk about a transformation he had to undergo, when he and his wife left their all-too comfortable setting of 8 years in Toronto to move to Hawaii. Mike lets me ask about some really solid topics, including effectively the crisis of identity you go through when making large career switches in life and the difficulty of building yourself back up after those periods of change. In this conversation we talk about his experience leaving college to work in construction for a year as he created new intentions, his decision to embark on the Pacific Crest Trail with nearly no prior backpacking experience, and some of the moments of solitude, joy, excitement, and even melancholy that he passed through while hiking it. Likewise we talk about mentorship, creating a mindset of determination and grit, and how the trip changed his perspective to take advantage of each day and the purpose that can be derived from it instead of looking towards finish lines far off in the future. I met Taylor when I played as a practice player my sophomore year on the women’s soccer team and as I mention in the episode, even as a younger player, she was a clear leader who brought both the energy and level of play up during games while retaining a composed mindset. That, her ability to balance an engineering degree with soccer, and her recent transition towards medicine all had me pretty excited to talk to her on the podcast. Brandon Maddox is a stud. Just from the several encounters he and I have had over the years, it’s easy to see that Brandon goes through life with a perspective of gratitude. That was one of the main reasons I was stoked to have him on the podcast and why I respect what he has to say. In this conversation we talk about his roots from a small town in Georgia and a bit about the different experiences between there and the Bay Area, California. He shares an emotional yet uplifting story seeing how his mother impacted her community, we talk about how the environment he grew up in/how it shaped who he is today, and how he sees his actions through a lens of personal accountability. Likewise we talk about being an effective salesman by prioritizing building strong relationships over selling and one of my favorite topics: gratefulness. I had a lot of fun listening to Brandon and I know you will too. Enjoy.

Gabby Zanutta is an architect who studied at the University of Kansas. I met Gabby in high school through soccer and wasn’t surprised when I found out she walked onto Kansas’ D1 soccer team. She was always extremely competitive on the field, but also kind and open as a person off the pitch. Having not talked for years, it was fun to reconnect and see how those character traits have stuck with her. Also impressive is seeing those traits paired with her incredible work ethic in her current career. And that’s an impressive combination, being kind and thoughtful, yet still relentlessly competitive and hardworking when the time is right. Here, we talk about her first couple years working out of college and the ways she has seen that architecture can be a vehicle for serving others. Likewise we talk about her passion for traveling that stems from having family in Italy and the balance in life she finds from being out in the wilderness, whether that’s just a couple hours away in the Sierra Nevadas or in extremely remote locations like Patagonia. Caden Waidyatillika is a really genuine and kind friend of mine I met while I was on Oahu. Our mothers grew up together and so when I went to live on Oahu for a bit, meeting him was like already having a bit of family out on the islands. The first thing I noticed about him, was how connected with the environment and how intentional he is about preserving and protecting it. Anytime we couldn’t meet up, it was usually because he was tending to their garden which he’s walled up with bricks made of plastic he’s collected or making lilikoi bars from the fruit they grew. He sees issues impacting our earth, and wants to help. One other thing that was striking, that I ask about first, is that Caden and his twin brother grew up with different skin colors, which, in Hawaii, leads to different childhoods. Here, we talk about a bunch of interesting topics including racism and respect in the Hawaiian islands, his experience working in wolf sanctuaries in Colorado and volunteering through Central America, and his passion for trying to create and teach about a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly earth. In this episode I talk with Gary Silberstein, an absolutely fantastic gentleman I met last year. This guy is a legend, honestly. Though he is 79 and I’m 25, when we’re hanging out I always feel like I’m talking to someone younger than me, just much wiser. We’ve surfed the point in Santa Cruz together, he’s introduced me to some of the original members of the Big Stick Surfing club, he's showed me how to cast gold rings in his garage, and we’ve had a lot of great chats over coffee on subjects ranging from science to philosophy. He is a retired professor, who researched and taught developmental biology at the University of California at Santa Cruz for nearly 30 years. Growing up in San Francisco in the 50’s, he got hooked on surfing at Ocean Beach and in Santa Cruz, a passion that became, as he describes it, True North on his compass. His experience as a surfer taught him at a young age what commitment really means. That committed mindset is evident in so many of his stories, from committing to graduate school to intentionally teach himself discipline, committing to his love of surfing, and committing to doing good work on each and every project set before him.. He embodies that ability to focus entirely on what is at hand and exemplifies that living and working hard in the present-moment gives opportunities the chance to find you.
