This is the extraordinary story of one man who has driven more than 1 million miles to rescue thousands of dogs from hunger, abuse, and neglect and give them a second chance at life and love. Back when this podcast was nothing more than a daydream I came across an article about a man who had rescued thousands of dogs. By taking a nearly week-long trip that spans 4,200 miles, from Ohio, down into Texas, and then back up towards the northeastern states, this guy has racked up well over one million miles of rescue transportation. He makes the trip every other week, picking up dogs along dozens of stops in the deep south, many who were almost certainly facing death, and delivering them to the arms of eager forever families along the route back home. This is the story of Greg Mahle and how he first hit the pavement with Rescue Road Trips... listen in to get the whole story. We talk to author Peter Zheutlin about his discovery of the complex world of animal rescue through the adoption of his dog Albie. He describes the process of meeting, following, and ultimately writing a book about Greg Mahle and other animal rescue heroes, as well as the ups and downs of a writer's life. Greg Mahle of Rescue Road Trips shares his story of dedication to his family, including his wife Adella, and to thousands of dogs over the years. Approximately twenty-six times a year, or every other week, Greg and one hired driver take a seven-day journey from Ohio to Southern states like Texas and Louisiana to fill up a tractor trailer with up to seventy dogs. They then head to Northeastern states like Pennsylvania and Connecticut to deliver each dog to their respective permanent or "forever" homes. That's a 4,200 mile round-trip, every two weeks!
