Proclaimers scale: we would ride from our house to The Old Globe on bicycles (if we had those bike shorts with padded butts) to see this show. March 30 – April 28, 2024 Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage Old Globe Theatre Conrad Prebys Theatre Center American premiere Book, music, and lyrics by Freya Catrin Smith Music and lyrics by Jack Williams Directed by Sarah Meadows Ready, set, ride! The smash-hit London musical makes its U.S. premiere. It's 1895, and Annie Londonderry wants to discover if a woman can ride a bicycle around the world. The problem? She's only ridden one twice! As Annie and her unwitting secretary Martha share unbelievable adventures across four continents, they learn that no matter how far we ride, our past is always right behind us. With a high-energy score and a wildly versatile cast, this fresh and funny show is what Theatre Weekly called “an amazing piece of theatre and a must-watch for everyone.” This production includes strong language.
Annie Cohen Kopchovsky is already struggling under the weight of patriarchy when two arrogant gentlemen wage a bet that a woman cannot possibly be as physically capable as a man nor able to care for herself as a man can. The wager? $10,000 if Annie can circumnavigate the world in less than 15 months and raise $5,000 in the process. Eager to prove those "gentlemen" wrong, Annie jumps at the chance, and leaves her family behind for the bike trail - the only problem? She's never ridden a bicycle before! How on earth will she get around the entire world with just her 42lb bike, a skirt and corset, one change of clothes and a pearl-handled revolver? Annie Londonderry (1870-1947) was a housewife-turned-cyclist who went on to become the first woman to bicycle around the world. This month, we're talking about adventurers – women who refused to be confined. They pushed the boundaries of where a woman could go, and how she could get there. History classes can get a bad rap, and sometimes for good reason. When we were students, we couldn't help wondering... where were all the ladies at? Why were so many incredible stories missing from the typical curriculum? Enter, Womanica. On this Wonder Media Network podcast we explore the lives of inspiring women in history you may not know about, but definitely should. Every weekday, listeners explore the trials, tragedies, and triumphs of groundbreaking women throughout history who have dramatically shaped the world around us. In each 5 minute episode, we'll dive into the story behind one woman listeners may or may not know–but definitely should. These diverse women from across space and time are grouped into easily accessible and engaging monthly themes like Educators, Villains, Indigenous Storytellers, Activists, and many more. Womanica is hosted by WMN co-founder and award-winning journalist Jenny Kaplan. The bite-sized episodes pack painstakingly researched content into fun, entertaining, and addictive daily adventures. Womanica was created by Liz Kaplan and Jenny Kaplan, executive produced by Jenny Kaplan, and produced by Grace Lynch, Maddy Foley, Brittany Martinez, Edie Allard, Lindsey Kratochwill, Adesuwa Agbonile, Carmen Borca-Carrillo, Taylor Williamson, Ale Tejeda, Sara Schleede, and Abbey Delk. In March 2022, Chris Cole, a local Bend artist, installed a new sculpture in the Discovery West neighborhood. This new public art in Bend, Oregon is a tribute to Annie Londonderry, the first women to bicycle around the world in 1894 and 1895. The seven foot tall, inverted pyramid design includes decorative bike cogs, ship window, and illuminated image of Annie and a descriptive plaque. If you were around in the mid-1890s, you might better know Annie Cohen Kopchovsky as Annie Londonderry, a 23-year-old woman who this week in 1894, began an extraordinary journey around the world on a bicycle.
In 1895, Annie Cohen embarked on a quest to become the first woman ever to cycle around the world. Did she make it? Yes! Were the newspapers engrossed in her story? Yes! Did she actually… um, cycle? Sometimes! By sheer grit, Annie made her life into something (literally) unbelievable. Peter Zheutlin, author of two books about Annie, shares the tale of a woman who “didn’t run away to join the circus; she became the circus.” … The post THE ROUND-THE-WORLD CYCLIST Annie Londonderry appeared first on What'shername.

One Woman's Journey Around the World on Two WheelsGuest: Peter Zheutlin; author of "Around the World on Two Wheels: Annie Londonderry's Extraordinary Ride"At the dawn of the bicycle craze, Annie Londonderry shocked the world by setting off on a world-wide tour. She was the president of The Ninety-Nines, a group of women who were all licensed pilots. They came from different backgrounds, but they all supported each other in their pursuit of flying. But that doesn't mean that they didn't compete against each other as well in the race for prizes and accolades in air races and record-breaking feats of daring.

In the 1890s, she DID circle the globe, but there are a LOT of inconsistencies in the details of her story, including why she did it in the first place.

Amanda brings the incredible story of Annie "Londonderry", the first woman to ride around the world on a bicycle...kind of. Rita shares the story of Libby Riddles, the first woman to win the Iditarod. Plus, hear about the trials and tribulations of being women in the media. Vocal fry, anyone?
Was Annie Londonderry a flim-flam artist or a true pioneer? Her trip around the world on a bicycle may have been controversial - but she was always up for both an adventure and a tall tale.

Pawprint | animal rescue podcast for dog, cat, and other animal lovers
We talk to author Peter Zheutlin about his discovery of the complex world of animal rescue through the adoption of his dog Albie. He describes the process of meeting, following, and ultimately writing a book about Greg Mahle and other animal rescue heroes, as well as the ups and downs of a writer's life. Book Peter Zheutlin's New York Times and Amazon best-seller, Rescue Road: One Man, Thirty Thousand Dogs, and a Million Miles on the Last Hope Highway, records the journey of Greg Mahle, who drives a truck 26 times a year to save thousands of dogs. You also get to know many other heroes - the folks on the front lines of rescue - who visit shelters, search for strays, and sacrifice much of their lives to benefit dogs. People like Keri Bullock Toth, Kelle Davis, and Alicia McCarty, among many others. We featured Greg Mahle in Episode 9. Pawprint's Interview with Greg Mahle Donate to Rescue Road Trips (Donate here!) Peter Zheutlin's wife, Judy Gelman, set up a YouCaring site for Greg Mahle to get a new truck, and Peter discusses it during the interview. The YouCaring site for Greg has been closed for an excellent reason - it reached its goal!! We shall see Rescue Road Trips deliver dogs to loving homes in a newer and safer vehicle in the very near future. If you want to donate to Rescue Road Trips to pay for diesel, help with truck repairs, and most importantly, help save thousands of dogs, donate here. Resources Peter Zheutlin's website Peter's initial article in Parade Magazine, where he writes about life on the road with Greg Mahle Rescue Road Trips' website Rescue Road Trips' Facebook Page Peter mentioned his fondness for the book Silent Spring by Rachel Carson Peter wrote this book about Annie Londonderry, a women who rode her bicycle around the world in the late 1800's Around The World On Two Wheels: Annie Londonderry's Extraordinary Ride Peter Zheutlin started working for the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War a few months before they were awarded the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize. Parade Magazine's Facebook post that Peter refers to during the interview. The response the post generated gave Peter the idea that Greg Mahle and animal rescue could be good subjects for a book.
