George Foreman gave us a masterclass in resilience, on never giving up. His pivots and comebacks from defeat were legendary. He was a force of nature and one of the greatest boxers, salesmen and personalities the world has ever known. His inspirational story matters to us because one of the most critical mental disciplines for sales professionals is resilience. Foreman's "In the Mud" Moment The George Foreman most of us remember, the man with the big charismatic smile selling grills on TV, was a far cry from the young man growing up in poverty in Houston's Fifth Ward, where lunch was often a mayonnaise sandwich. As a teenager, George was an angry, mean bully who stole from kids at school and was shoplifting and mugging his way through his neighborhood. He was living on the edge, one arrest away from landing in a jail cell and potentially a life behind bars. One night, he was lying flat on his face in stinking mud, hiding from the police, when it hit him like a left hook that he was going nowhere like this. It was a moment of truth that changed the trajectory of his life. Lying there covered in filth, he made a promise to himself to change his path. He realized that if he wanted to avoid going nowhere, he had to make a massive mindset shift. He enrolled in the Job Corps—a federal program that helps disadvantaged youth pick up real life skills—and soon after discovered boxing. And from that moment on, he replaced petty crime with gloves, replaced street fights with disciplined training, replaced despair with a sense of purpose. This type of mindset shift is exactly what resilience is about. Sometimes you've got to face the fact that your old excuses, old habits, or old environment aren't working for you anymore. And when you decide to do something different—really decide—you set the stage for everything else that follows. That stinking mud moment is where you get real about your situation. It's where you decide that you've had enough and realize that the change you are looking for can only be found inside yourself because that's where resilience comes from. Developing Resilience in the Face of Devastating Defeat Once George got serious about boxing, he rocketed to stardom. He won gold in the 1968 Olympics, then tore through the heavyweight division. In one of his most famous fights, he defeated Joe Frazier in just two rounds, creating the iconic moment when Howard Cosell screams, “Down goes Frazier, down goes Frazier, down goes Frazier!” Foreman emerged from that fight as a heavyweight wrecking ball, the unstoppable champion of the world. Then, he ran into a wall called Muhammad Ali. Millions of people tuned in to watch Foreman and Ali battle it out in what was hyped as the “Rumble in the Jungle.” Going into the fight, Foreman was the overwhelming favorite. But it was his overconfidence that lulled him into Ali's famous rope-a-dope strategy. This led to a crushing and embarrassing defeat. Ali knocked Foreman out in the eighth round, shocking the world and pulling off the upset of the century. Foreman was humiliated on the global stage. In that moment, he went from being the hardest hitting, baddest man on the planet to an also-ran. Sales and life can be the same way. You might have soared for months, hitting every goal. Then the bottom falls out. The real test isn't whether you can ride success, but whether you can respond to defeat with resilience. The real question is, will you pick yourself up and make a comeback or fold up like a cheap lawn chair and quit. Will your failure become a tattoo or temporary bruise? Retreat and Reinvention — The Next Pivot After that loss to Ali, Foreman was devastated. But he continued fighting until at the age of 28, he had a near death experience in Puerto Rico following a loss to Jimmy Young. It was one more lapse into overconfidence in which Foreman failed to prepare for the fight and was taken down by yet another underdog.

Earlier this week, the prominent African-American broadcaster and writer, Tavis Smiley, came on the show to voice his support for Reparations to correct the past racial injustices in American history. The Kentucky based historian, Joel Edward Goza, author of Rebirth of a Nation, agrees with Smiley, arguing that Reparations is, in fact, the central civil rights issue of our age. The struggle for Reparations in California, he argues, has turned the state into the Alabama or Mississippi of the 2020s. Perhaps. Although I'm not sure everyone, either in and out of California, will agree with Goza's analysis of Ronald Reagan's central role in 21st century America's racial injustice. Or his suggestion that California should pay reparations to the rest of America for Reagan's sins. Joel Edward Goza is a writer, speaker, and community advocate. He is professor of ethics at the HBCU Simmons College and teaches in Kentucky prisons. Before focusing on writing and teaching, Joel worked in urban redevelopment and community activism for over a decade in Houston's Fifth Ward. He is also the author of America's Unholy Ghosts: The Racist Roots of Our Faith and Politics, and contributes to The Hill, Salon, and Religion News Service. Diverse Voices Book Review host Hopeton Hay interviewed Megan Kimble, author of CITY LIMITS: Infrastructure, Inequality, and the Future of America's Highways. CITY LIMITS examines the impact of urban highways on American cities. In the interview, Kimble discussed how highways were sold as progress in the 1950s and 60s, driven by car companies and oil industries. She argues that highways often disproportionately affect black and brown communities, citing examples like Houston's Fifth Ward. She also addresses the paradox of increased traffic due to induced demand and the environmental and economic costs of car-centric cities. Kimball advocates for the removal of urban highways to create more equitable and sustainable urban spaces.Diverse Voices Book Review Social Media:Facebook - @diversevoicesbookreviewInstagram - @diverse_voices_book_reviewTwitter - @diversebookshayEmail: hbh@diversevoicesbookreview.com

Leslie Moody Castro talks with Harrison Guy about Houston's Fifth Ward, his Urban Souls Dance Company, and what keeps him motivated to build community in the city. "Our projects are based on this thought process that memory builds the monument. The way that we look at it is that if you don't have a lot of assets in your community, because they're gone, for a lot of different reasons beyond your control, the thing that you do have is your memory...so if we look at the memories as the capital and we start to build from that, then we're starting from a place of asset versus deficit." On today's show, we'll hear an encore of a show from our archives that first aired in April. We'll be looking at the environmental impact of the rail industry and hear from people in two communities currently impacted by rail-related contamination. In February, a Suffolk Northern train carrying toxic chemicals derailed in East Palestine, Ohio, and residents are still recovering from the disaster over two months later. Residents like Jami Wallace and community organizations are fighting for relief. In Houston's Fifth Ward, residents have been living with the dire health effects of carcinogenic creosote used to treat railroad ties decades ago. Health officials have found cancer clusters in the neighborhood, where many have been devastated by the loss of friends, neighbors and loved ones. We'll hear a story from Living Downstream about the impacts to this close-knit community, where residents and organizers like Sandra Edwards continue to advocate for accountability and justice. Welcome to Hot Topics! Our guest Difrent Caldwell returns to the podcast to help Gabrielle Crichlow answer the following question - "Are Black people entitled to things?"Gabrielle Crichlow and Difrent Caldwell discuss the topic of entitlement and reparations for Black people. They acknowledge that while Black people are entitled to reparations, it's unlikely that they'll receive them from the government and that the community should focus on building their own resources and businesses. Difernt and Gabrielle suggest that this can be achieved through mental health and education reform, supporting Black-owned businesses, and prison reform. They also touch on the idea of Black people being given land or resources that were stolen from their ancestors. The ladies agree that this is a complex issue and that it's important to acknowledge the historical injustices that have been committed against Black people. This episode emphasizes the importance of discussing and addressing the ongoing impact of systemic racism on Black communities. Difrent and Gabrielle also discuss the need for fairness and equality in all aspects of society and the importance of community support and empowerment. They encourage individuals to take control of their own lives and not rely solely on the government for reparations or compensation for slavery.Who is Difrent Caldwell?Difernt was born on December 15, 1990, in Houston, Texas, Fifth Ward, overcoming homelessness and foster care. She had a normal childhood up until the time she was around the age of 11; then her and her family ended up homeless. For the next 3 years, Difernt and her family would live in various places including: strangers' houses; cars; parks; bus stops; shelters; and even a crack house. At age 14, she was secretly placed in foster care and after the first 6 months of being in the system and trying to get out. She discovered that, in the State of Texas “foster kids” who aged out of care-- college tuition fees were waived. A light bulb went off in Difernt's head; she then used her street smarts to elevate her book smarts. In which, led to Difernt beating the odds. She is now an alumni of Sam Houston State University and a member of the Beta Theta Chapter of Phi Chi Theta. She graduated receiving her BA in International Business, with two minors in Economics and Business Communication, and her Master's in Entrepreneurship. She is also a Texas Real Estate Agent. She has a love for traveling and has visited over fifty countries and participated in amateur kickboxing. Her hobbies include reading, watching "Shark Tank", journaling, meditating, biking, ATV riding, ziplining, and hanging out with her best friend—her nephew. Difernt always knew she was meant for greatness, however, she understood to become the person she was meant to be—it would take fixing her inner issues that plagued her past. It was not until she found the courage to do something about her depression and dismissed the notion that “black people don't do therapy." While in therapy Difernt was encouraged to channel her negative experiences into a positive outcome. She quickly learned that with strategic planning, proper preparation, and constant prayer. Difernt could manifest the life she was meant have—and wants others to do the same with their lives. Now at the age of thirty, realizing she is not person she once was and by God's Grace; Difernt is ready for the next adventure in her life-- publishing her first book. It is with WHAT IF? A Controversial Paradigm Shift, Difernt hopes to inspire individuals to have healthy conversations with others about systemic racism. She hypothesizes that when we have these conversations about systemic racism and other taboo subjects. Then overtime social awareness will spread and society can start to change for the better. Because when you know better, you do better. You can find Difernt Caldwell:On the web: https://diferntsworld.net/On Twitter: https://twitter.com/difernts3r...On Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/th3r...On YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channe...Difrent has a book called "What If A Controversial Paradigm" - purchase it today from her website: https://diferntsworld.net/Watch this episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/aXiJIdo2nF4**********************************************Follow A Step Ahead Tutoring Services:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/astep...Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/ASATS2...Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/aste...Eventbrite: https://astepaheadtutoringserv...Visit our website: https://www.astepaheadtutoring...Sign up for our tutoring email list: https://squareup.com/outreach/...Check out our entire "Hot Topics!" podcast: https://www.astepaheadtutoring...Support us:Cash App: https://cash.app/$ASATS2013PayPal: https://paypal.me/ASATS2013Venmo: https://venmo.com/u/ASATS2013Zelle: success@astepaheadtutoringservices.comDownload the full episode transcript here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1WS4100KtG8FXfgmrLKZYgT7H4fq3xwT2/view?usp=drive_linkOriginal date of episode: February 17, 2023

Then, from the governor's office weighing in on diversity in hiring, to the AMC Theatre chain's plans to counter lost revenue by charging moviegoers more for center seats, this week's “non-expert” panel weighs in on The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of the week. And former NFL player and Houston native Delvin Williams reflects on his career and the challenge of reshaping his life after football in his new memoir, Fifth Ward to Fourth Quarter: Football's Impact on an NFL Player's Body and Soul.

Garry Monroe is a street fighter from Fifth Ward in Houston. He took his passion for kids into a race for School Board in Harris County (Houston), Texas. He watched them cheat and brings that story, in its rawness, to this Episode of Patriot Games. Sorry for the technical difficulties with the sound of my voice, but don't worry, Garry is full-throated. Support the show
