Frank Blake sits down with Goodwill Industries CEO Steve Preston and truck driver Michael West to discuss the organization's "second chance" mission. From running adult high schools in prisons to providing career paths for those overcoming addiction and incarceration, this is the story of how a 125-year-old mission is still changing lives today. In this episode, we discuss: The surprising scale of Goodwill: 650 job centers and 50 adult high schools. Michael West's personal journey from addiction and incarceration to homeownership. Why Steve Preston left the C-suite and the Cabinet to lead a "difficult-to-hire" mission. The "Edgar Helms" philosophy: Turning charity into a chance. Eric Van Buren grew up in Washington, DC in a stable home with hardworking parents and a strong family foundation, but his life took a turn after high school when fighting and drug dealing pulled him into the streets. After being arrested on a state murder charge and beating the case, Eric thought the worst was behind him — until the federal government indicted him on a major drug conspiracy. The feds sentenced Eric to life in prison, and he went on to serve 19 years inside some of the most dangerous federal prisons in the country, fighting to survive both mentally and physically. In this episode, Eric breaks down how a good kid ended up with a life sentence, what day-to-day survival in high-security federal prison is really like, and how he ultimately got his sentence reduced after nearly two decades behind bars. This is a raw, unfiltered story about choices, consequences, and redemption inside the federal prison system. _____________________________________________ #prisonstory #lifeinprison #truecrime #federalprison #survivestory #prisonlife #lockedin #realstories _____________________________________________ Thank you to PRIZEPICKS for sponsoring this episode! How do you do, fellow kids? We try to appeal to the youth this week and so does Jeopardy!, as their older fans predictably fume about them twisting a very regular wordplay category to make a meme joke. But we love it, and we love this final week of Second Chance as some dynamite players return to the Alex Trebek Stage and we get some truly wonderful gameplay. We also discuss small town Canada hotels, Emily's Christmas gift, and we dive deep (plunge deep?) on the history of epidurals. If you want more of this show, there's never been a better time because Baby Geniuses is BACK, baby! That's right, Emily and Lisa Hanawalt reunite for their first Baby Gs episode in almost two years, and it's ONLY on our Patreon! Why should we pay attention to scars or scar tissue? After the original injury heals and its pain recedes, should we ignore what's left behind? In this episode, Linda mulls over these questions while considering Madeleine Thien's "Alchemy," from her collection, Simple Recipes. Don't know Thien's work? Check out her award-winning novel, Do Not Say We Have Nothing (which Linda discussed in Season 1, Episode 3) and her most recent novel, The Book of Records. What if the finish line you've been chasing keeps moving because life isn't a race at all?John David Graham joins us at 77 with a story that rewrites the rules on success, failure, and second chances. After years bouncing between jobs, counsellor, truck driver, fireman, contractor, journalist, even pastor, he and his wife bought a beat-up house, fixed it themselves, and opened the door to someone few communities welcome: a man coming home from prison. That first “yes” sparked Good Samaritan Home, now a network of 21 houses across three counties, designed for low-risk reentry with real accountability and a clear path forward. We dig into what actually helps people rebuild: safe, independent housing; steady local partnerships with parole. John explains why they focus on one clear promise, housing, while the community handles the rest, and how this approach saves public dollars compared with incarceration while increasing long-term stability. He shares hard truths about change: not everyone is ready the first time, effort matters, and boundaries protect dignity. You'll hear how small skills, applying for work, showing up, cooking your own meals, become major turning points when shame and isolation have been the norm.Threaded through the episode is a powerful theme: hope as a habit. John's debut novel brings that idea to life through a character born behind the starting line, a story many readers recognize as their own. We talk about family resilience, useful ageing, and the quiet heroics of curiosity, like his wife, in her late 70s, learning home repairs on YouTube and helping keep 21 houses running. If you've ever felt behind, boxed in by labels, or unsure how to help, this conversation offers a map: start small, stay accountable, and keep going, one practical step at a time.If this resonates, follow the show, share it with someone who needs a nudge of hope, and leave a review to help others find stories that move them.https://johndavidgraham.com/Award-winning novel RUNNING AS FAST AS I CAN.Send BEHAS a text.Support the showTo Share - Connect & Relate: Share Your Thoughts and Shape the Show! Criminal justice advocates are renewing a push for a Second Look law in New York, which would allow people serving long prison sentences to ask judges to reconsider their cases after decades behind bars. WNYC's Ryan Kost reports on how the proposal could affect thousands of incarcerated New Yorkers. Plus, we head to Hell's Kitchen, where food critic Robert Sietsema says one of the city's most crowded neighborhoods is also one of its best places to eat.

Dr. Sina McCullough did everything “right.” She had a PhD in nutrition. She cooked from scratch. She bought organic. And still, her health fell apart. Autoimmune disease. Chronic infections. Miscarriages. Crushing fatigue. At her lowest point, she couldn't lift a cup to drink without her young son helping her. In this episode, Sina tells Ginny the moment she hit rock bottom and the prayer she prayed asking God for one more chance at life. What happened next is hard to explain away: off the floor in three days, pain-free in three months, disease-free in a year. And a promise she made to spend the rest of her life helping others find their second chance too. This conversation isn't about perfection or fear or doing everything. It's about clarity. Sina explains why food labels often give a false sense of security, why “gluten-free” and “organic” don't always mean what we think they do, and why healing can't be reduced to a sticker on a package. She and Ginny talk about getting outside as real medicine—breathing in microbial diversity, regulating the nervous system, letting nature do what it's always done best. If you've ever felt overwhelmed, confused, or quietly discouraged because you're trying so hard and still not feeling well, this episode will meet you where you are. No shame. No hype. Just hope, wisdom, and the reminder that your body and your life may be more resilient than you've been led to believe. We start with breaking corporate news as Warner Bros. Discovery is expected to reject Paramount's latest acquisition offer, choosing instead to move forward with its $82.7 billion Netflix deal. If finalized, Netflix would gain control of Warner Bros. Games, including massive IP like Mortal Kombat, DC, Harry Potter, and more. We discuss whether Netflix will license these franchises out—or finally go all-in on games—and what this could mean for the future of AAA development. Next, we look at alarming new data showing US hardware sales and physical game spending just hit their worst November in 30 years. Despite heavy Black Friday promotions, record-high console prices dragged sales down, even as PS5 emerged as the best-selling console for the month. We break down what this says about the future of physical games, hardware pricing, and consumer behavior. Then we tackle the ongoing AI controversy in game development, as Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke responds forcefully to backlash over AI usage following The Game Awards. Vincke makes it clear: artists are not being replaced. We discuss where AI fits responsibly in modern game development—and where players are drawing the line. The episode also covers Bungie's major Marathon update, including a March 2026 release date, revamped visuals, deeper PvE, hardcore gameplay shifts, solo playlists, expanded weapon mod systems, and new lore teases. After months of controversy, Bungie appears to be rebuilding trust—so we ask: Is Marathon finally back on track? And can it stand alongside competitors like Arc Raiders? Plus, listener questions and reactions on Bungie, PlayStation strategy, and shooter fatigue.

What happens when a “good, normal, suburban” life collides with addiction, shame, and a God who refuses to let go? In this powerful conversation, I sit down with Cheri Garcia, founder of Cornbread Hustle, a second-chance staffing agency that’s helped thousands of formerly incarcerated men and women find work and hope. Cherry shares her raw story—from teenage meth dealer and alcoholic to sober entrepreneur and soon-to-be bride—and how God met her in a New Year’s Eve church service, a single Bible verse, and a recovery community she now calls her sunflower sisters. Her husband—long stabilized on medication for depression and anxiety—was abruptly taken off a key prescription by a new physician. Within weeks, he spiraled into isolation, hopelessness, and a darkness she could no longer reach. Despite her attempts to warn their children and keep him busy through friends, the day came when he decided he'd had enough. She raced home to find him in the closed garage, the car running, convinced she was too late. But at the hospital, doctors were stunned: he'd been in the car long past what most people survive… and yet he walked away physically unharmed. On her drive home from visiting him, she received an unexpected explanation—from a face she hadn't seen since 1974. Her husband's father, who died by suicide in the exact same way, appeared beneath her rearview mirror with a chilling, comforting message: “I was with him in the car the whole time.” Was this a coincidence, a miracle, or a father protecting his son from repeating his fate? #realghoststories #afterlife #spiritencounter #guardianspirit #paranormalpodcast #neardeath #familyvisitfrombeyond #depressionawareness #spiritualintervention #hauntingstories #realghoststoriesonline Love real ghost stories? Retired Brigadier General Shawn A. Harris is back on the front lines—this time in politics. From his grass-fed cattle farm in Rockmart, Georgia to the halls of the Pentagon, Harris joins Independent Americans host Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) to break down SignalGate, the deadly US boat strikes, the War Powers fight and the growing danger of sloppy, politicized military leadership. Running as a Democrat in Georgia's 14th Congressional District—the open seat Marjorie Taylor Greene is abandoning—Harris explains why leadership, integrity and service still matter in a district that's been defined by chaos, extremism and cable hits. He talks candidly about why he chose not to “change t‑shirts,” what it's like to have two sons still in uniform, and why independent and Reagan Republicans are lining up behind his campaign. Rieckhoff and Harris also explore whether Congress is quietly edging America toward another war in the Caribbean, whether the boat strike could rise to a war crime, and what real accountability for the current Secretary of Defense should look like. They dig into the Pentagon press rules fight, the New York Times lawsuit, the arrest of the January 6 pipe bomb suspect, and what “dead men don't talk” really means for intelligence and national security. Then, in a powerful “something good,” Harris salutes his hometown Early County Bobcats and the high school football coach who helped turn hopes and dreams into a life of service—sparking a heartfelt conversation about how sports, mentors and community can literally save young lives. Because every episode of Independent Americans with Paul Rieckhoff breaks down the most important news stories--and offers light to contrast the heat of other politics and news shows. It's time for our First Monday Story coming from our Trussville, Alabama community group… And, it's the perfect story for "Colitis and Crohn's Awareness week," celebrated the first week of December. At the age of fifteen, Kristen Jones was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. It was a disease doctors said she would be fighting her entire life. The years that followed were spent being sick then well, taking medications and blood transfusions, only to be re-diagnosed with Crohn's disease as an adult. When told her only way to live was through surgery and wearing an ileostomy bag, Kristen hesitantly agreed. Listen in as she speaks of all the Lord has taught her as the Author of her story.
