"Everyone Deserves a Second Chance" with Dan Hanneken

With You in the Weeds

When Dan Hanneken started reading a bible in a prison cell, he had no idea how God's grace could offer a second chance for anyone willing to change. This is the final episode in our “Loving Your Neighbor as Yourself” series, and we end with the incredible story of how Dan Hanneken found God in an unlikely place. Host Shay Roush interviews Dan as he shares how his own journey, marked by addiction, three prison stints and a life-changing encounter with God's grace inspired him to create In2Action, a ministry that offers practical and relational support to men entering the community from prison. Dan's turning point was when he “broke up with God” because he believed that he couldn't try hard enough, memorize enough bible verses or be good enough to make his life better and stay out of prison. That's when he finally understood the deeper meaning of grace: your best efforts aren't enough to create and sustain personal transformation. Dan recognized that a relationship with God wasn't a means to an end, but that a relationship with God was the basis for finding his identity as a fully loved and accepted child of God. Taking a leap of faith, Dan founded In2Action, a faith-based nonprofit that supports men recently released from prison with housing, life skills, and community integration. Starting with a single rented house, the ministry now offers over 60 beds and a Reentry Opportunity Center, achieving a remarkable recidivism rate in mid-Missouri below 10% compared to the county's 43%. Dan recognizes that success goes beyond staying out of prison—it's about fostering belonging through creating community and opportunity for social transition. This remarkable story is a reminder that loving our neighbors by giving them a second chance allows them to rebuild their lives, find purpose and meaning, and come to understand the depth of God's love and the power of belonging in his family. Sometimes, life writes love stories so unexpected, you couldn't make them up if you tried. Today's guests, Jennie and Bryan Drollinger, know precisely what it means to become lost and then, against all odds, be found.  Years ago, Bryan and Jennie were young, in love, and full of possibility. But like so many couples, life had other plans. At a time where dating was limited to in person communication and catching someone at the right time on a land line, a few simple misses turned into misunderstandings. Bryan followed his path as a devout Mormon, got married, raised a family of seven, and built a successful career. Jenny married and settled into a marriage that blessed her with two beautiful children, yet there was an absence of that loving feeling she once dreamed of. Life brought challenges for both of them, including failed expectations, and the deep struggle of holding it all together, especially when marriage is intertwined with faith, community, and awareness that their lives were being spent more on the worst side, for better or worse.. Then came the unthinkable. Bryan's marriage ended, leaving him in one of the most challenging spaces of his life, financially, emotionally, and spiritually. Simultaneously, as fate would have it, Jenny's marriage was ending as well, facing her own heartbreaks and growing pains. And then, the universe intervened. A random reconnection occurred when Bryan, needing an attorney, found himself seeking a consultation with the firm's paralegal. Her name? Jenny.. Sparks fared, and a realization that both of their winding, messy, painful roads had prepared them for this: a second chance at the love they once shared. Now, through their new podcast A Second Chance on Love, and upcoming book made for a movie, Bryan and Jennie are opening up about their journey, their lessons, and their hope for anyone who's wondering if it's too late to rewrite their love story. Some of the most encouraging words in the Bible are found in the Psalms. They’re heart felt, they deal with expressions of joy, and of sorrow. No matter what emotions are weighing heavily on you, you’ll find words that speak to your heart. Today on A NEW BEGINNING, Pastor Greg Laurie takes us to Psalm 32 as the psalmist David is in serious need of forgiveness. We can learn a lot for our times of regret, and discover that God welcomes those who come to Him in contrition. #275 Reincarnation: A Second Chance or Stuck on a Treadmill?

Yoga Wisdom with Acharya das

This talk on reincarnation takes a different angle from our earlier discussion in the Bhagavad-gita Wisdom Series. Last time, we explored how we came to have our present body. In this session, we shift the focus to discussing two common ideas about reincarnation — that it offers a second chance to “get things right,” or that it's like being stuck on an endless treadmill. As part of the discussion we also delve into the Vedic perspective on the repeated cycle of birth and death, known as saṁsāra.The link to the ancient Vedic story about Jaḍa Bharata which I mentioned in the talk is here:Mistaking a Saint for a Fool – Jada Bharata - https://open.spotify.com/episode/0pwBt4zs0EqWUDMmWYNURx?si=5QF4-a-IRNGhBGw_GIpyvQ The Vedic verses I quote in this talk: As the embodied soul continuously passes, in this body, from boyhood to youth to old age, the soul similarly passes into another body at death. A sober person is not bewildered by such a change. - Bhagavad-gītā 2.13As a person puts on new garments, giving up old ones, the soul similarly accepts new material bodies, giving up the old and useless ones. - Bhagavad-gītā 2.22Whatever state of being one remembers when he quits his body, that state he will attain without fail. - Bhagavad-gītā 8.6The living entity in the material world carries his different conceptions of life from one body to another as the air carries aromas. - Bhagavad-gītā 15.8The caterpillar transports itself from one leaf to another by capturing one leaf before giving up the other. Similarly, according to his previous work, the living entity must capture another body before giving up the one he has. This is because the mind is the reservoir of all kinds of desires. - Bhāgavata Purāṇa 4.29.76-77The living entity, thus taking another gross body, obtains a certain type of ear, tongue, and nose and sense of touch, which are grouped about the mind. He thus enjoys a particular set of sense objects. - Bhagavad-gītā 15.9When the living entity passes from the present body to the next body, which is created by his own karma, he becomes absorbed in the pleasurable and painful sensations of the new body and completely forgets the experience of the previous body. This total forgetfulness of one's previous material identity, which comes about for one reason or another, is called death. Nick Marshal seemed like a regular kid from New Jersey — good family, middle-class upbringing, and a bright future. But peer pressure and street life led him into drug dealing while still in high school. By 20, Nick was deep in the game: selling, using, and even robbing his suppliers. He tried to walk away, but one final robbery got him caught — and landed him in prison. In this interview, Nick opens up about his rise and fall in the drug world, the day he got arrested, what prison was really like, and how he rebuilt his life in New York's nightlife scene after serving 3 years behind bars. #DrugGameSurvivor #PrisonToRedemption #TrueCrimeStories #NYCNightlife #ExDealerStory #FromStreetsToSuccess #LockedInPodcast #SecondChanceJourney Connect with Nick Marshall: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thenickmarshall/ Buy his book: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Try-Again/Nick-Marshall/9781632280985 Hosted, Executive Produced & Edited By Ian Bick: https://www.instagram.com/ian_bick/?hl=en https://ianbick.com/ Get 50% off the Magic Mind offer here: https://www.magicmind.com/IANB50. #magicmind #mentalwealth #mentalperformance Presented by Tyson 2.0 & Wooooo Energy: https://tyson20.com/ https://woooooenergy.com/ Use code LOCKEDIN for 20% OFF Wooooo Energy Buy Merch: http://www.ianbick.com/shop Timestamps: 00:00 The Setup: Chaos, Crime, and Fear 00:52 Meet Nick Marshall: Double Life Begins 02:15 Try Again: Writing and Redemption 04:53 Coming Clean: Telling His Story 05:36 Second Chances & Hard Work 06:55 Sponsor Break: Magic Mind 07:50 Early Years: Growing Up in New Jersey 09:02 Anger, Fights, and Bullying 11:39 First Job, First Crime 13:33 Drug Dealing Origins 15:55 Transferring Schools & More Trouble 20:10 The Teen Drug Game Ramps Up 22:43 Family Troubles & Selling Escalates 26:02 High Life, High Risk: Nightclubs & Escalation 30:16 Robbery Plans and Downfall 33:02 A Life Unraveling 36:40 Violent Turns and Final Heist 40:19 The Aftermath: Panic and Guilt 43:15 The Arrest: Facing Justice 50:19 Jail: First Experiences & Reality Sets In 01:05:00 Legal Battle: Attorneys and Pleas 01:16:08 A Shot at Redemption 01:21:22 Prison Time 01:38:09 Prison Lessons and Survival 01:50:19 Life After Prison: Rebuilding 01:56:03 What I Learned: Reflections and Advice 02:00:30 Closing Lessons & Farewell Powered by: Just Media House : https://www.justmediahouse.com/ Creative direction, design, assets, support by FWRD: https://www.fwrd.co Learn more about your ad choices.
