Some people get a wake-up call and make small adjustments. Rose Garcia got hers and decided to go all in on everything. This episode is proof of what happens when someone takes a second chance and refuses to let any part of it go to waste. In this episode of Amiga Handle Your Shit, Jackie Tapia sits down with Rose Garcia, a Latina entrepreneur, real estate veteran, ovarian cancer survivor, and the new co-owner of The Dinah, the legendary queer women's festival now heading into its 35th year. Rose talks about growing up Boricua and Salvadoran in Los Angeles, building a career in real estate after starting out as a teenage intern, and how that hustle eventually opened the door to owning a Hollywood nightclub and co-owning one of the biggest festivals in the LGBTQ community. What makes this conversation land differently is the part Rose almost did not get to tell. A swollen stomach sent her to the emergency room, and within days she was diagnosed with stage 3C ovarian cancer. Doctors gave her a timeline if treatment did not work. She walks through what it actually felt like to sit with that news, how she shifted into fight mode, and the lesson she still carries two years later, now cancer-free.Rose also opens up about her connection to “The L Word,” where her real life became the basis for a character, and what it meant to show a Latina Catholic family choosing love over judgment on national television. From East LA bars to red carpets to hospital waiting rooms, this is a conversation about showing up for your life, on your own terms.Tune in to episode 285 of Amiga Handle Your Shit for a Pride Month conversation about resilience, representation, and what it means to get a second chance and actually use it.Episode TakeawaysHow a teenage internship turned into a full career in real estate, and the network that made it possible (05:44)The story behind the Dinah, the 35-year-old queer women's festival now run by Rose and her business partner (08:26)How Rose's real life became the inspiration for a character on The L Word, and the road trip through East LA bars that started it all (12:10)What it meant to show a Catholic Latino family choosing acceptance, and the messages that came after (15:51)The swollen stomach, the ER visit, and the diagnosis that came faster than anyone expected (24:04)What stage 3C ovarian cancer treatment actually looked like, and the mindset shift that got her through it (27:08)Why Rose says cancer is not the death sentence it used to be, and what she changed in her life afterward (32:02)Connect with Rose Garcia:InstagramLinkedInThe DinahLet's Connect!WebsiteFacebookInstagramLinkedInJackie Tapia Arbonne websiteBook: The AMIGA Way: Release Cultural Limiting Beliefs to Transform Your Life Hosted on Acast. Today's guest is someone whose story and message deeply touched me. As a volunteer clergy member at our local jail, I have the privilege of working one-on-one with inmates to help them discover hope, healing, and the belief that no matter what mistakes they've made, their past does not have to define their future.Recently, I attended a district conference with other volunteers and several former inmates who have completely turned their lives around. It was there that I had the privilege of hearing Tony Taylor speak and sing. His story was powerful, honest, heartbreaking, and inspiring—and I immediately thought, “More people need to hear Tony's story.”Tony shares his journey of growing up feeling like he didn't belong. Born to a Black father and Native American mother, he struggled deeply with identity, racism, bullying, and trauma from a very young age. His childhood was filled with instability, abuse, addiction, violence, abandonment, and unimaginable pain. He experienced sexual abuse as a child, exposure to drugs and domestic violence, and by his teenage years he was already battling alcoholism, drug addiction, and destructive coping mechanisms. In this episode, we talk openly about trauma, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), generational pain, and how unresolved wounds can shape behavior. Tony explains that while trauma does not excuse harmful actions, understanding the roots of pain can help us better understand ourselves and begin the healing process.Despite the chaos surrounding him, Tony graduated from high school, attended college, played football, and started a family. But the trauma he carried inside eventually caught up with him. In a tragic situation, Tony took another person's life and was sentenced to prison. What happened next is what makes Tony's story so remarkable. While in court, the victim's family challenged Tony to do something good with his life. Those words changed him. Instead of surrendering to hopelessness, Tony committed himself to growth, accountability, education, and personal transformation. During his 29 years in prison, he immersed himself in self-improvement programs, life skills classes, and college education. He eventually went from student to teacher, helping mentor and teach fellow inmates. He earned his bachelor's degree and is close to completing his master's degree. We also discuss the important distinction between guilt and shame, inspired by the work of Brené Brown. Guilt says, “I did something bad,” while shame says, “I am bad.” Shame leads to hopelessness, but healthy guilt can motivate change, growth, and accountability.Tony shares how difficult it is to pursue healing and self-improvement in prison, where negativity often dominates the environment. Yet he also shares how faith transformed his life. He credits God and the healing power of Jesus Christ with changing his heart, giving him hope, and teaching him humility, accountability, forgiveness, resilience, and love.Tony openly acknowledges the pain he caused and the years he spent in prison. But instead of wasting that time, he chose to become a better man. Today, he and his son are building a new future together through a fantasy sports business venture with the goal of creating positive impact and giving back to charitable causes like St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. One of Tony's favorite scriptures is Ephesians 3:20:“Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we can ask or imagine according to His power at work within us.”In closing, I shared a story from former prison warden Clinton Duffy. When one critic told him, “Leopards don't change their spots,” Duffy replied:“I don't work with leopards. I work with men, and men change every day.”This episode is a powerful reminder that no one is beyond hope, healing, redemption, or transformation. In This EpisodeHow childhood trauma and ACEs impact behaviorThe connection between pain, addiction, and destructive choicesGenerational trauma and breaking unhealthy cyclesThe difference between guilt and shameFaith, accountability, and personal transformationFinding purpose and healing after devastating mistakesEducation, mentorship, and growth in prisonWhy people are capable of real change and redemptionBuilding a meaningful future after prisonListen, Share, and SupportIf this episode resonated with you, please share it with someone who may need hope today.Be sure to subscribe, leave a rating and review, and help us spread more healing and inspiration to the world.Free Resource for HealingIf you're ready to release stress, calm your mind, and begin healing from within, visit:

The Ty Brady Way
He Lost the Deal, Got a Second Chance, and Became Franchisee of the Year Twice: The Story Matt Stevens Will Never Forget

The Ty Brady Way

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 10, 2026 35:54

On this episode of The Ty Brady Way, Ty sits down with Matt Stevens, known simply as The Franchise Guy. Matt has spent 25 years as a franchise consultant flying the flag with FranChoice, an international group of franchise professionals who help people find the right business opportunity without the guesswork. Before that, he spent years inside the franchise world itself, starting as a young guy running a painting business in New Hampshire in 1988, working his way up to franchise development roles, and flying around the country for years before realizing he was missing his daughter's childhood in the process. That wake-up call led him to where he is now, and he hasn't looked back. The story that sets the tone for this whole conversation starts in the cold. Matt was running his painting franchise in southwestern New Hampshire, and leads were thin. No direct mail, no digital marketing, just door knocking and yard signs. So he made a decision: every weekend, he would cold call houses until he had 10 estimates scheduled. He did that for months straight, in February, March, and April, walking streets in a short sleeve shirt in mid-fifty-degree weather because he was moving fast enough to stay warm. He never left a Sunday night without those 10 appointments. That year he won rookie of the year for the Northern New England division. He credits two things: fear and pride. He had given up a baseball summer to run a business, and he was not going home empty-handed. Ty and Matt get into what actually separates the top performers in franchising from everyone else. Matt calls it exercising your ABs: Attitude, Ambition, Behavior, and Skill. But the fifth element, the one most people miss, is Engagement. He learned that the hard way in 1988 when he spent hundreds of hours solving problems on his own that a single phone call to a neighboring franchisee could have answered in ten minutes. The whole point of a franchise system is that you are not doing it alone. You paid for the knowledge of everyone who came before you. Not using it is like buying a map and refusing to open it. One of the most practical parts of this conversation is Matt's take on the single biggest mistake people make when looking at franchises: turning assumptions into conclusions. Someone sees a franchise advertised for $70,000 and assumes that's the total investment. Someone else assumes they need millions to get started. Matt placed a candidate who got into a franchise for $15,000 cash, borrowed another $50,000, built it for seven years, and retired. The numbers are almost never what people assume, and a few honest conversations can change everything. Matt also walks through how he structures his days when things are clicking: one consultation, one introduction, and consistent marketing activity every single day. He sets aside time rather than chasing a number, because he knows that some days one hour of marketing produces five appointments and some days it produces zero. The activity is what matters. He calls it butt in seat, and it's the same principle whether you're trying to lose weight, renovate a room, or build a business. The story that closes this episode is one Matt has carried with him for fifteen years. A friend got downsized from a $200,000 executive role and came to Matt looking for a business. He found the right opportunity, but hesitated too long and someone else grabbed it. He started over with a second option. Then the person who bought the first opportunity had a serious health issue and had to sell, and Matt called his friend and said, this is yours if you want it, pennies on the dollar. His friend bought both businesses. He has been franchisee of the year in both national systems and is still going strong fifteen years later. That's the kind of outcome that keeps Matt doing what he does. His legacy is simple: do the right thing, and trust that one person can do what another person has already done. You just have to know what that person actually did to get there.

Have you ever been given a second chance, only to repeat the same mistakes? In week one of our new three-week series on the life of Samson, Pastor Kevin unpacks a profound question: What do you do with second chances? We dive into the book of Judges to see how God's willingness to bless our lives doesn't determine what we reap. Join us as we learn the difference between sowing "smart" and sowing "stupid," and how to walk by the Spirit rather than the flesh.

This week, we’ll hear from Annie Bosko, a country artist whose career was gaining momentum when, in the middle of a live performance, her voice suddenly gave out. What followed was a vocal cord injury that required surgery and months of recovery where she couldn’t speak at all. Annie shares what that season of silence revealed, the people who stepped in to help her rebuild, and how she slowly returned to doing what she loves. Later, we’ll hear from chef and author Danielle Kartes. After her family lost everything when their restaurant closed, Danielle struggled to rebuild her life and marriage. Though she vowed never to cook again, she was drawn back to the kitchen. Her attempt to reconcile her deep faith with her practical, food-centric work asking, “How does hope relate to pot roast?” became the foundation for her company, Rustic Joyful Food. But when nothing’s going for you, or when you feel like you’re at your wit’s end and you feel really down on all hope, I think that’s when people have to turn to faith the most.” - Annie Bosko “You have to be on the bigger spiritual plan, path, [or] course for your life that doesn’t look like anyone else’s. That’s really important to sort of tune out sometimes even like your own voices of fear, because I really believe that anytime you’re making decisions out of fear, that’s not in love.” - Annie Bosko “I can carry out God’s plan for me, [and] I think at the end of the day, it’s only you and God [that] know how far you can actually go.” - Annie Bosko “God is still good, and He can still use your story even if it’s broken. God still wants wonderful things from you.” - Danielle Kartes “When I stopped wanting Him to show up in the way that I thought I needed and allowed God to show up in the way that He needed for my life, everything changed as far as my peace and trusting His provision.” - Danielle Kartes “I think that you can strengthen your family bond and your bond with your children by allowing them into your day. I think that it’s really important to just involve your kids in what you’re doing.” - Danielle Kartes “The more time you spend with the Lord, the more time you make for Jesus, the better you feel, even if your life circumstances aren’t changing.” - Danielle Kartes “God didn’t promise us that it would be easy, but He did promise, “I’m going to be with you every step of the way.” - Danielle Kartes ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel! How did Peter the fisherman become Peter the faithful friend and church father? The answer is found in the faithfulness of Jesus. If ever there was a friend who sticks closer than a brother, Jesus is that friend. Peter, who had denied Jesus in His most vulnerable moment, is pursued and encouraged, transformed by the grace of God extended to him, and recommissioned by Jesus on a memorable day on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. This same Jesus is transforming us to be faithful friends who can extend His prophetic call, challenge, care, correction, and commission to others.

He helped build one of the biggest Christian bands of the 1990s, toured America with a dream of using music to point people to Jesus — and at the height of it all, watched his marriage, his family, his ministry, and his life fall apart. John James, the original lead singer of Newsboys, joins Brian From to talk about his memoir Newsboy: My Story of Hope and Second Chances. He's honest about what fame actually does to a person over time — not overnight destruction, but a slow distortion of reality, a quiet disconnection from the vine, and the gradual exposure of whatever cracks were already in the foundation. He's also honest about what it took to come back: returning to Australia, bitter and broken, riddled with shame, going to church only out of obligation — until one day he encountered God in a way that changed everything. His message to anyone who feels too far gone to be reached: if God could find me in that mess, there is no one He can't reach. Join Lisa, Matt, Jules, and Noa as they dive into the latest shocking twist in one of the most infamous true crime cases in recent history—the granting of a new trial for convicted killer Alex Murdaugh. Once found guilty of murdering his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, in a case that captivated the nation, Murdaugh is now seeking another chance in court. But this isn't just a story about murder. It's a story about power, privilege, political influence, and a legal dynasty that controlled a corner of South Carolina for generations. In this episode, we examine the allegations that helped secure Murdaugh's retrial, including claims that former court clerk Becky Hill improperly influenced jurors while allegedly pursuing a tell-all book and media opportunities connected to the case. We explore how these accusations have reignited debate about whether justice was truly served—or whether the system itself became compromised. The conversation goes beyond the courtroom as we unpack the extraordinary influence wielded by the Murdaugh family for decades and ask a difficult question: Would an average defendant ever receive the same opportunities and legal advantages? We also discuss how true crime documentaries, podcasts, social media, and internet sleuths have transformed modern criminal investigations and high-profile trials. Has public scrutiny improved accountability, or has it complicated the pursuit of justice? This episode explores the intersection of wealth, corruption, media influence, and the American justice system in a case that continues to raise more questions than answers. If you're fascinated by true crime podcasts, courtroom drama, criminal investigations, legal scandals, and the Murdaugh family saga, this is an episode you won't want to miss. *Please note all opinions in the show are our own and solely in regards to the specific case we are discussing in this episode* We made a one stop shop for all the Eye for an Eye links our listeners might want to check out whether its where to listen, our merch shop, all of our socials, our email, or ways to support the show,  we'd love for you to visit the link below!  https://msha.ke/eyeforeyepod/ Tired of Ads? Countless Second Chances

Grace Christian Church

At the heart of Christianity lies a profound truth that can transform how we relate to both God and others: the principle of countless second chances. This exploration of Psalm 51 takes us into David's raw and honest response after being confronted about his sin with Bathsheba. What makes this psalm so powerful is that David doesn't make excuses or deflect blame. Instead, he owns his transgressions completely, pleads for God's mercy, and goes a step further by asking for a transformed heart. We discover that true repentance isn't just about saying sorry but about desiring genuine change from the inside out. The message challenges us to find that delicate balance between not wallowing in guilt and not minimizing our wrongdoing. When we truly grasp the depth of what we've been forgiven, extending forgiveness to others becomes not just a command but a natural response. The parable of the unmerciful servant in Matthew 18 reminds us that we've been forgiven an unpayable debt, so how can we withhold forgiveness from others? This isn't about allowing abuse or removing consequences, but about keeping our hearts open to reconciliation and restoration. The ground at the foot of the cross is level, and we all stand there equally in need of grace. If you want help in starting this journey, please don't hesitate to reach out! If you want to talk to someone about going deeper in your faith or starting to walk with Jesus on a daily basis, please reach out to us at office@graceva.com
