We welcomed Maria Sherman back to the pod, this time not to talk about Calvin Johnson and his merry band of yogurt-drum twee dreamers, but to talk about THE HISTORY OF BOY BANDS — as detailed in Maria's book Larger Than Life: A History of Boy Bands from NKOTB to BTS. From shady '80s managers screwing New Edition out of their hard-earned dough, to the secret hidden original member of *NYSYNC that Molly didn't know existed, to the fruitful fanfiction culture of One Direction, we got into a bunch of things that happened when you put a bunch of cute boys in a room together and had them sing and dance. EPISODE 236: Justin 'The Owl' Osgood returns to chat with Rey about an issue with Moon Knight in it (but not necessarily his own series!)... Both hosts dust off their music nostalgia and cast their minds back to the heady days of corporate bands....hang on...that's still going! Get ready for an odd tale that only can be found in tales involving our White Knight! PHASE: WAXING GIBBOUS SEGMENT: OTHER SIDE OF THE MOON MARVEL FANFARE VOL. 5 #38 - WHATEVER HAPPENED TO PODUNK SLAM? Released June 1988 Writer - Jo Duffy Penciler - Judith Hunt Inker - Bill Sienkiewicz Colorist - Eric Lee Letterer - Jim Novak Editor - Allen Milgrom BARE BONES (Courtesy by Rey): At the Danielle Clark Home for Lost and Friendless Girls, a mysterious intruder enters the dorm, leaving all the girls scared and running for cover. Meanwhile Marc and his art dealer, Spence ruminate over a mysterious artifact named The High Priests Death Mask of Koala Munba. Marc agrees to loan it to the natural history museum before his calling for philanthropic work beckons with Frenchie at the door. Coincidentally, it's to take the girls of the Danielle Clark Home to a Podunk Slam concert...an abrasive and corporate boy band that gains mainstream appeal. Marc later receives visions from his own High Priests of Khonshu, warning of Podunk Slam, but he can't make out why. Deciding to spy on the band, Moon Knight reveals a potential conspiracy, before being discovered and swings away, escaping the shots of Podunk Slam's bodyguards. Moon Knight later visits the band in their dressing room, and after piecing together the puzzle, warns them of the curse that the relic has bestowed on them. Podunk Slam's manager, Appletree intervenes and attacks Moon Knight. Calling on the crazed fans to do his work, Appletree incites a frenzy and the crazed fans burst into the dressing room, attacking Moon Knight. It's revealed the Death Mask of Koala Munba has cast a curse on Podunk Slam - they can retain their youth at the expense of their fans. Appletree had cut the deal for the band, ensuring their success, but at the expense of many a girl's youth. Moon Knight shatters the relic and Podunk Slam return to their older, aged selves, much to the disgust of their fans. MOON RATING : Justin:

This week's episode begins with a tale of governmental treachery - at the behest of developers - from Santa Rosa County. Our guest is Helen Hartley, the former business reporter at the St. Petersburg Times. She uncovered a massive insurance and investment scam orchestrated by Lou Pearlman in the mid-2000s. Pearlman was the driving force behind the development of boy bands Backstreet Boys and NSYNC which, for a brief period, turned Orlando into one of the music industry's hotbeds.
Reason #23 everyone is staring at us: We (mostly Erin) have some very strong feelings as to what makes a boy band. O'Dell does a really good job of continuously changing the course of the conversation, which leads us to talk about the show "Soundtrack", lip sync battles, and then circle back to Girl Groups. This leads to a discussion of why is it a Boy Band (when the boys don't play instruments) and a Girl Band when the girls do play, but a girl group when they only sing and dance? These are the conversations that will undoubtedly bring about world peace.Become a Member: https://whyareyoustaring.com/index.php/membership/Sign up for our monthly newsletter: https://whyareyoustaring.com/index.php/newsletter/Check out our website at: https://whyareyoustaring.com for more information about the show, merch links and more.If you have a question, a confession or something else that you'd like to share with us, send us a message to firstname.lastname@example.org Follow us: https://beacons.page/everyoneisstaring

Boy bands have been a staple of pop music for generations. They've won over millions of fans and provided gateways to fandom and pop-cultural obsession. From New Edition and New Kids On The Block in the '80s to BTS today — with a whole lot of acts like *NSYNC and The Backstreet Boys in the middle — there've been countless boy bands to choose from. Today we're offering up a brief modern history of boy bands.
So… turns out your beloved 90s boyband was nothing but a financial scam. Lou Pearlman created Backstreet Boys and Nsync, taking them from unknown teens in Florida and turning them into the biggest bands in the world. At the height of their fame, both groups were bringing in hundreds of millions of dollars, yet they were only getting paid… $30 each a day. Yep - Lou Pearlman was a con artist, and he wasn't just ripping off the boy bands he created. When authorities took a closer look, they realised he had been running the biggest Ponzi scheme in US history, and most of his investors were naive old people who thought they owned a little piece of the Backstreet Boys. We give you just the gist, but if you want more, there's this: The Boy Band Con: The Lou Pearlman Story (the doco produced by Lance Bass): https://youtu.be/CcCRs0Ic3FI Vanity Fair Confidential episode ‘Mad About The Boys' (season 1, episode 9 - available on Amazon Prime in Australia): https://youtu.be/KJR1_Hj-j2A Backstreet Boys: Show ‘Em What You're Made Of: https://youtu.be/bOZm93IWvgA Vanity Fair article ‘Mad About The Boys': https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2007/11/pearlman200711/amp Washington Post article: https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2019/03/13/lou-pearlman-was-disgraced-mogul-who-defrauded-s-boy-bands-then-came-million-ponzi-scheme/%3foutputType=amp New Yorker piece: https://www.newyorker.com/culture/culture-desk/we-live-in-the-pop-culture-world-that-lou-pearlman-created/amp Free Britney stuff we mentioned: New Yorker piece by RONAN Farrow and Jia Tolentino: https://www.newyorker.com/news/american-chronicles/britney-spears-conservatorship-nightmare/amp New podcast ‘Pieces Of Britney': https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/brand/p09mfr9s Brisbane and Perth Gisteners! Mental health advocate Joel Relampagos was born in Manila, Philippines, on January 25, 1982. Decades before Asian hate shockingly gripped our nation, he moved to the US on his 6th birthday. As a Southern California resident, he grew up in a strict, Catholic/Filipino home and dealt with the parental expectations of their son becoming a Doctor. At the age of 19, Joel opened up about his sexuality on MTV’s “True Life: I’m Coming Out.” After being featured on Advocate Magazine and getting national recognition from the LGBTQ+ and AAPI (Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders) community, Joel decided to pursue a career in entertainment instead of becoming a doctor. In an interview he stated, “There’s more than one way to save a life; and telling our stories of struggle can help save the lives of others.” Joel produced shows such as FOX’s “Hell’s Kitchen” and quickly became a young Executive Producer for NBC’s “The Biggest Loser.” He worked with production companies in the Philippines and China to launch their own version of the hit weight loss competition series. After 10 years with “The Biggest Loser,” Joel continued to Executive Producer shows such as ABC’s “Boy Band” and the student debt series “Going From Broke” Executive Produced alongside Ashton Kutcher. In his early 30’s, Joel began to battle with depression, anxiety and an alcohol addiction. He made the decision to spend 50 days away from entertainment so he can seek help in a rehabilitation facility in Ventura, CA. That experience not only helped Joel recover from his struggles with addiction but he also fell in love with mental health. Joel then launched a free mental health program called Change Your Algorithm. It gained a community of thousands across the globe especially since many were seeking free mental health support during the pandemic. “CYA” offers its services online on changealgorithm.com where mental health classes are lead by certified therapists. Its services were quickly recognized across the globe which led to partnerships with the Silicon Valley education technology company Chegg as well as Ameriprise Financial Firm. CYA has been featured on FOX, ABC and Forbes. As a partner with Chegg, Joel also hosts their student mental health show titled “Breaking the Stigma” where he interviews everyday students to discuss their struggles with mental health. Today, Joel is an Executive Producer for LeBron James’ SpringHill Company as they work on launching a special on Stop Asian Hate. The project, titled “Recipe for Change,” will be released on June 16th through YouTube Originals.
