------ Who doesn't know him? Oliver Froning, also known as the face of Dune and performing as DJ Raw. With mega-hits like Hardcore Vibes, Can't Stop Raving, Rainbow to the Stars, Are You Ready to Fly, and Million Miles, he helped shape a new wave of electronic dance music in the early '90s. These tracks topped international charts for months on end. He had been high on our wish list for a visit to Alles op Tafel. At the end of December, our schedules finally aligned, and we talked for nearly 1.5 hours about music, the '90s, successes, time-outs, the scene, personal highs and lows, and the role of his wife and manager, Michaela. Happy New Year! This final Overdrive Radio podcast for 2024 -- or the first for 2025, whenever you happen to be catching it -- looks back on the year that has been, a certainly sluggish one when it comes to business for many, though with a degree of optimism heading into 2025 with a new administration incoming and hope for business-friendly policy yielding freight improvement all around. Here's how this one is going to go: Earlier this month, we charted the top 10 podcasts of this year, including a few two-parters this time around featuring extended talks with working truckers, whether small fleet owners like Gill Freightlines' Surinder Gill on the collapse of the Convoy brokerage, or some among our owner-operator Trucker of the Year contenders offering business advice gleaned from their wealth of experience. We've got a short concert-haul run in-cab, a guide to beating back predatory tow invoices, and much more among hot topics and business dissection throughout the year. So count down through the 10 most-listened-to podcasts of 2024, plus an extra three just outside that top 10 for a lucky 13, all the way to No. 1, to ring in the new year right. Today I'm talking about what I consider a perfect combination for teenagers to grow and thrive: doing hard things while having a close relationship with a parent who acts as a mentor. If that isn't the kind of relationship you have, I'll offer you three tips to improve your connection: Have confidence in them Give less advice and ask more questions Be more fun! "Some guys customize their truck via paint, chrome, lights, and things like that. I customize my truck to make it a more comfortable place to be, a more profitable truck, a more efficient truck." --Owner-operator Alan Kitzhaber It's another rewinder of sorts for this week in the Overdrive Radio podcast series. If you missed the news last week Tuesday, owner-operator Alan Kitzhaber out of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, was honored as our August Trucker of the Month, putting him in the running for Overdrive's Trucker of the Year award with his three-plus decades trucking and 4 million miles logged behind the wheel of his long-running 1995 Kenworth T600: https://www.overdriveonline.com/trucker-of-the-year/article/15681362/meticulous-maintenance-efficiency-trucker-of-the-month Listeners have heard Kitzhaber in recent memory, of course, when he passed the 4-million-mile mark on the T600's odometer in May we aired this talk originally in July: https://www.overdriveonline.com/overdrive-radio/podcast/15679534/4-million-miles-in-a-95-kw-t600-owneroperator-alan-kitzhaber For those who missed the talk, this week hear Kitzhaber on his approach to keeping that rig running right these past decades and so many miles. And: we're at the final sprint for the Trucker of the Year award program for 2024. Nominations will close at the end of the month, and we've got just two semi-finalist slots left for a chance to win a brand-new seat, up to a $2,500 value, from Trucker of the Year award sponsor Bostrom Seating, a trip to and recognition at the Mid-America Trucking Show, various other prizes, and more. If you or another deserving owner want to put your business in the running, visit https://OverdriveOnline.com/toptrucker to do that. Kitzhaber's not the first owner Overdrive Radio listeners have heard who's done similar -- "Mustang" Mike Crawford crossed 4 million in his 1994 Freightliner (12.7 Detroit-powered) back in 2022: https://www.overdriveonline.com/channel-19/article/15291488/mike-mustang-crawfords-1994-freightliner-4-million-safe-miles (Incidentally, Overdrive editor Todd Dills spoke with Crawford July 1 as he hitting the Prime yard in Springfield at the end of his final run before retirement with a grand total of 4,159,910 miles in the rear view of the Freightliner. More on Crawford's final run in a future podcast.) Owner-operator Alan Kitzhaber's career stretches back to 1990, his time as owner-operator some years on with Millis Transfer, where he first took the reins of the then-brand-new 1995 Kenworth T600 as a company driver. He bought the truck from the company itself, then, a few years later. Since then, he's been laser-focused on turning that truck into a profit-making machine, and meticulous with record-keeping in no small way. As suggested by the quote at the top, too, plenty modifications through the years have allowed him to excel to the point of achieving well more than 8 mpg for a fuel mileage average several years running this past decade. There's a lot to those modifications he's made, for certain, detailed in today's episode. And 4 million miles is a very long way. More than 8 times to the moon and back. At roughly 60 miles per hour it'd take you well past the hard end of the 14-hour clock to do it at 66,666 hours. We'll track back through Kitzhaber's history a little more quickly than that today on the podcast, along the way learning plenty about just how the owner-operator kept that Cat-powered T600 humming efficiently for so very long. As mentioned in the podcast, Caterpillar's interview with Kitzhaber for its Million Mile Club when he crossed 3 million: https://www.cat.com/en_US/articles/cat-truck-engine-articles/million-miler-alan-kitzhaber.html Gordon Alkire's closed greasing system: https://www.overdriveonline.com/channel-19/article/14877182/csa-proofing-part-two-closed-greasing-system

FROM THE FROZEN WASTES OF THE ARCTIC TO THE DEPTHS OF THE AFRICAN JUNGLE, THE ARID DESERTS OF MEXICO, AND THE AMERICAN MIDWEST THEY CAME… Welcome to part two of Gabe and Patrick's look back at the biggest year in giant monster movie history. We've got a lot of big bugs this time, including Nathan H. Juran's The Deadly Mantis, the wasps of Kenneth G. "Some guys customize their truck via paint, chrome, lights, and things like that. I customize my truck to make it a more comfortable place to be, a more profitable truck, a more efficient truck." --Owner-operator Alan Kitzhaber May 2024 was a big month for owner-operator Alan Kitzhaber, running with his authority as Oakridge Transport out of a home base in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, now for getting on a decade and a half. That month, he celebrated with family the graduation of one of his brothers with a Master's degree in counseling, that brother's son's completion of a PhD in chemistry, and graduation of the brother's daughter from high school. Owner-operator Kitzhaber himself, treated for prostate cancer earlier in the year, was celebrating an undetectable blood test marking his freedom from that condition. He put a light blue ribbon in the icing on a brownie cake he made as they all got together at his brother's house to celebrate. Just what else Kitzhaber put on that cake, which you can see in the cover image for this Overdrive Radio edition, is the reason you're hearing Alan today. Also in May, Alan Kitzhaber completed a remarkable feat in his 1995 Kenworth T600, Cat 3406E-powered. He crossed the 4-million-mile mark in that single truck alone, every one of the miles logged under his expert piloting.

FROM THE FURTHEST REACHES OF SPACE AND THE DEEPEST DEPTHS OF THE SEA CAME ALIENS, MUTATED CREATURES, AND OTHER LARGE, SCARY ALLEGORIES! Welcome to another patented Genre Grinder deep dive into a specific year where a specific genre peaked. This time, Patrick and Gabe are looking at 15 of 17 movies about gigantic monsters released in some capacity during the year 1957 (festival, roll-out, wide, et cetera). The other two are a lost film (Tokyo 1960) and one already covered on a different episode of Genre Grinder (Quatermass II). Not unexpectedly, the conversation carried on for some time, so the complete 15-movie discussion will be spread over three episodes. In part one, following an intro to the genre and era, we're covering Nathan H. Juran's 20 Million Miles to Earth, Roger Corman's Attack of the Crab Monsters, Jack Arnold's The Incredible Shrinking Man, and Kurt Neumann's Kronos. "I wanted to know what you guys think about screen time... I stopped letting my son (6) watch but then we reintroduced it as my husband said that if it's in a foreign language it can be beneficial exposure to the language... We limited it to an hour, but I feel like it is too stimulating and it affects his behaviour. It feels like that is all he can think about sometimes. I haven't read much about it, but I think it's not good for their brains it's too addictive." A fantastic question and concern for all parents. In this episode, we dive into the complicated and real challenges facing us as parents -- and individuals -- as we seek to navigate new territory -- being the first people in the history of the world trying to raise children with so many screens. So how do we do it --effectively? What dangers are we facing? What opportunities? How young is 'too young' to let kids use screens? How much is 'too much' screen time? And how do we ensure, as parents and role models, that we are setting a good example of technology use for our children? We answer all these questions and more to help you teach your kids that screens are 'tools not toys' and that we can maintain mental, emotional, and physical health when we use devices responsibly. Do you ever feel like you're not where you want to be in life? Do you wish you had accomplished more and made a significant impact? If so, you're not alone. Many people feel this way, and it's time to take control and edit your life. In the book "A Million Miles in a Thousand Years: What I Learned from Editing My Life" by Donald Miller, the concept of editing your life is explored. The author, initially reluctant to turn his memoir into a movie, realizes that certain elements of a great story are necessary to captivate an audience. This realization leads him to question the meaning and purpose of his own life. So, let me ask you, do you feel like you are where you want to be in your life? Chances are, your answer is no. Most of us have dreams and aspirations that have yet to be realized. We yearn for financial stability, personal growth, strong relationships, and overall fulfillment. But how do we get there? The key lies in recognizing that you have the power to edit your life. Just like a movie script, you can shape the narrative of your own story. You can give meaning to the events that have unfolded and guide the direction of your future. Here are some elements of a great story that you can apply to your own life: 1. Embrace Change and Take Risks In any great story, the main character must undergo transformation. They must learn to embrace change and take risks to achieve their goals. Similarly, in your own life, stepping outside of your comfort zone is essential for growth and fulfillment. Don't let fear hold you back. Embrace uncertainty and open yourself up to new possibilities. 2. Set Meaningful Goals A meaningful life is driven by purpose and values. Just like a great story, identify what you want to achieve and set goals that align with your aspirations. Your goals will give your life direction and provide you with a sense of fulfillment as you work towards them. 3. Overcome Fear and Resistance Fear is a powerful force that can hinder our progress. In great stories, the main character often faces and overcomes their fears. Similarly, in your own life, recognize and address your fears. Don't let them hold you back from reaching your full potential. Overcoming fear is the path to a remarkable story and an extraordinary life. 4. Cultivate Relationships and Community In many captivating stories, relationships play a significant role. Building connections and forming a supportive community is vital for personal growth and a fulfilling life. Surround yourself with positive influences and seek out meaningful connections. Together, you can navigate the challenges and celebrate the victories. Remember, you have the power to edit your life and create an amazing story. Don't let your past define you. Instead, learn from it, grow from it, and give meaning to the events that have shaped you. Your story is still being written, and it's up to you to craft it with purpose, passion, and courage. So, take a moment to reflect on your life. Ask yourself if you're where you want to be. If the answer is no, it's time to start editing. Embrace change, set meaningful goals, overcome your fears, and cultivate relationships. Live a life that you're proud of, a life that reflects the story you want to tell. Remember, you are the author of your story. You have the power to create a life that is filled with joy, purpose, and fulfillment. Start editing today and unleash the unlimited potential within you. If you're ready to dive deeper into this concept of editing your life and creating an amazing story, I highly recommend reading "A Million Miles in a Thousand Years" by Donald Miller. We had the pleasure of interviewing SAUL over Zoom video!Saul issue a call for connection in their music. The Iowa quartet—brothers Blake Bedsaul [lead vocals] and Zach Bedsaul [lead guitar, backup vocals], William McIlravy [bass, backup vocals], and Myles Clayborne [drums]—continue to bring audiences together with a one-two punch of precise and pummeling metallic grooves and towering magnetic melodies. Amassing tens of millions of streams and earning acclaim from Revolver, Guitar World, Loudwire, and many more, the group fortify an unbreakable bond with listeners on their second full-length offering, THIS IS IT…THE END OF EVERYTHING [Spinefarm].Saul emerged out of the Midwest in 2017 and tirelessly bulldozed a path to the forefront of modern rock. They notably performed alongside everyone from Motionless In White, Atreyu, August Burns Red, Crown The Empire, Bush, and 10 Years to HELLYEAH and Nonpoint in addition to gracing the stages of festivals, including Rebel Rock, Rock Fest, Rock USA, Inkcarceration, and Blue Ridge Rock Fest with Rob Zombie, Mudvayne, and Slipknot. The group independently landed a bona fide hit in the form of “Brother”—an homage to the co-founders' late brother Caleb. It marked their first #1 on Sirius/XM Octane in addition to gathering over 9 million Spotify streams and paving the way for their 2020 full-length debut, Rise As Equals. Co-written with David Draiman of Disturbed, “King Of Misery” reeled in 3.7 million Spotify streams, while “Trial By Fire” also surpassed 3 million Spotify streams. Of the former, American Songwriter praised“‘King of Misery' wasted no time jumping into the heavy mainstream riffs that Saul set out to wrangle,” and Outburn hailed its “futuristic and cinematic video.”Expanding the sonic palette, the guys collaborated with producer Kile Odell [Motionless In White, Nita Strauss] this time around. They initially teased this chapter with “JACK & JILL,” which tempers a hypnotic harmony with a heavy groove. On its heels, they unleashed the single “A MILLION MILES.” Co-written with Johnny Andrews [Three Days Grace, Starset, Theory of a Deadman], a seesawing riff and electrifying melody give way to a chant-able chorus laced with raw emotion befitting of the central theme.Hummable keys set the tone for “RUNAWAY,” dissolving into a harmonic riff. The breathy verses break like a wave on a refrain tailor-made for a live singalong, “Treat me like a runaway, because I'm vanishing. I don't think I'll be missed.”An ominous sample snaps into a pummeling chug on the opener “TOOTH & NAIL.” Clean vocals snake through the verses towards a warning, “There's no escape.”Then, there's “BETTER AS A MEMORY.” It swings between schizophrenic extremes highlighted by unpredictable instrumental dynamics and a heart-wrenching vocal performance, “Deep down you know, I'd be better as a memory.”In the end, Saul create the soundtrack for breaking free.We want to hear from you! Friends! Have I got an inspiring episode for you! NASA Flight Engineer, José Hernández, who served aboard the International Space Station, is here to share his remarkable personal story that took him from his migrant farmworking childhood to outer space. Along the way he acquired advanced engineering degrees, learned the Russian language, took flight lessons and became a certified SCUBA diver... all with the unwavering support of his parents, loving wife, and extended family. He's also a pioneer in the digital mamography field and his contributions have saved countless lives. The movie about his life, "A Million Miles Away", debuted on Prime on September 15. Listen to our podcast, then watch the film! You will be so inspired! ~ DelilahSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
"I think it's very important that the film demonstrated that it was an effort not done by one individual who started working as a farm worker and became an astronaut, but rather it was an effort of a family, of community, and the importance of having that support structure. That's what allowed me to flourish," says José Hernández. A Million Miles Away is directed by award-winning filmmaker Alejandra Márquez Abella (Northern Skies Over Empty Space, The Good Girls) and starring Michael Peña ("Narcos: Mexico," End of Watch, Crash). The film is based on the inspirational true story of José Hernández, the first migrant farmworker to become an astronaut and go to space. From his humble beginnings in Michoacán, Mexico, to working in the crop fields alongside his family in California, to being selected for astronaut training by NASA (after being turned down 11 times!). "I like to think that this is a film about Earth," says Alejandra Márquez Abella. "I didn't want to get too confused by the space thing. I wanted to focus on the earth, on the trainings, on the effort that this man had to go through to get up there." Want more?
