Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie stars, movie directors, and sometimes––sometimes––movie writers! Today, we speak with author and screenwriter Jordan Harper, whose novel She Rides Shotgun got made into a movie of the same name, directed by Nick Rowland and starring Taron Egerton and Ana Sophia Heger. The film is in theaters this Friday, August 1, 2025. We spoke with Harper about adapting his novel for the big screen, his reaction to watching the final cut of the film, and those superb lead performances from Egerton and Heger. There's mention of his other books The Last King of California and Everybody Knows, as well as B-Sides that reminded us of She Rides Shotgun, which include One False Move, Flesh & Bone, A Perfect World, and Lone Star. Harper mentions Freeway as well, which is a great call. Harper brings up his new novel due out next year: A Violent Masterpiece. There's also appreciation for Shogun Assassin (a direct inspiration for She Rides Shotgun) and a discussion of genre and genre tropes and why they are so effective when used well.

The Bourbon Road

In this region-spanning tasting session, The Bourbon Road hosts Jim Shannon and Todd Ritter guide listeners through four American whiskeys that each bring something unique to the table. From the high plains of Wyoming to the oak-rich rickhouses of Kentucky and the bold, sun-soaked warehouses of Texas, this episode offers a full-flavored exploration of how place and process shape the final pour. First up is Buffalo Bill Cody Straight Bourbon from Wyoming Whiskey—a 6-year-old, 97-proof bourbon blended from 26 barrels. Distilled with 100% Wyoming-grown grain in Kirby, this expression honors a frontier legend with bold notes of cherry, leather, exotic spice, and sweet cream. Jim and Todd both agree it's a standout example of what regional distilling can deliver—complex, approachable, and full of character. The second pour shifts eastward to RD1's Sister Cities, a blend of 5- and 7-year-old Kentucky bourbons with an 8-year-old rye, finished using French oak “necklaces” and Japanese Mizunara staves. Bottled at 102 proof, the whiskey opens with a bright, tart fruit nose—orange zest, raisin bran, and cherries—then develops into warm layers of milk chocolate, spice, and drying oak. The result is a richly nuanced pour that pays homage to Lexington's international connections with refinement and flair. In the second half, the hosts feature two expressions from Milam & Greene's “The Answer” line—each identical in distillate but aged in different states. The Kentucky-aged version delivers a more traditional bourbon profile, showcasing smooth oak integration, brown sugar, and baking spice. Meanwhile, the Texas-aged version leans bolder and darker, shaped by the state's intense climate with notes of charred wood, molasses, and earth. Side-by-side, these two pours demonstrate how dramatically aging environment alone can influence a whiskey's flavor, texture, and personality. Throughout the episode, Jim and Todd offer their signature banter, detailed tasting notes, and honest reflections on what makes each pour special. Whether it's a frontier homage, an internationally inspired blend, or an experiment in terroir through aging, every whiskey in this lineup tells a compelling story. This is American whiskey at its best—diverse, regional, and endlessly expressive. Alan Hall, Joel Saxon, Phil Ro, and Rosemary Barnes.  Allen Hall: Welcome back to the Uptime Wind Energy Podcast. I'm Alan Hall from the Queen City, Charlotte, North Carolina, and I got Phil Totaro in Santa Barbara, Cali, and Joel is back in the Lone Star state of Texas near Austin. And. Uh, Q2 results came out from GE Renova. In fact, they had a little webinar this morning to discuss it. Uh, a lot of different aspects to ge. Renova, as we all know, nuclear sort of high voltage, little tiny bit transmission, but, uh, wind of course gas turbines. So they are definitely setting the course for [00:01:00] a gas turbine world. And Phil, how, how far out are orders for their gas turbine products?  Phil Totaro: The last I heard talking to somebody from GE who said it was 2031 at this point, um, although things can be accelerated depending on if you're willing to pay a bit of a premium, they can, uh, you know, move you up in the queue, so to speak. Um, but it's, uh, you know, it's a pretty, uh, far off thing. Um, and unfortunately. You know, it looks like GE hasn't announced a lot of new orders for onshore wind, but nobody has in the United States. Everybody was waiting in Q1 and Q2 to see what the outcome of the production tax credit, uh, changes were gonna be. Now that we have definitive, you know, legislation on that. Um, it's going to actually trigger a lot of safe harbor orders, uh, assuming that companies can actually deliver turbines. [00:02:00] Um, because in order to safe harbor, you actually have to physically receive and store, um, something equivalent to 5% of the CapEx cost of the project. So that has to happen now before. Uh, July, 2026. And because of that, uh, I think you're actually gonna see a lot of companies that had been holding off on placing their turbine supply orders. Uh, all of those are gonna start getting announced in Q3 and Q4, so it's gonna be like a monster quarter. Uh, that's gonna more than make up for any shortcomings from, uh, from this past quarter. Joel Saxum: This is a, I'm, I'm dreaming here. Uh, could you see that this thing is, this legislation, the way it sits right now, all of a sudden all these orders come in and people are buying turbines to safe harbor them. And it's just making that, that renewable industry economy just churn for a year. And then it comes down to it. And like that is taking notice of by the administration, taking notice of like, Hey, actually there is demand for this renewable [00:03:00] energy. There is a ton of jobs happening here. There's all kinds of people trucking, there's all kinds of people delivering. And then like, maybe we should relax and change these things because this, they're still moving forward. Could you see that changing?  Phil Totaro: That is unlikely. But they're definitely, I mean, we know how politics works, and this isn't exclusive to any, you know,

Saddle up, whiskey lovers—this episode of The Whiskey Trip takes us deep into bourbon country with a Texas twist. Big Chief rolls into The Rackhouse in The Colony, Texas, where the sunsets paint the sky in firelight, the steaks hit the grill with a sizzle that sings, and the whiskey flows like a backcountry river after spring rain. Here, we meet the heartbeat of the place—Rob and Amy Jones, a husband-and-wife duo who've built more than a bar. They've built a destination. A whiskey sanctuary. A spot where stories are shared, glasses are raised, and strangers become kin. First Pour: Old Forester King Ranch They start the show with a nod to Texas grit and cowboy legacy—Old Forester King Ranch. Mesquite charcoal-filtered, this pour is bold as a bull ride and smooth as a fiddle tune. Sweet dark chocolate and tobacco saddle up with leather and toasted oak, finishing long and strong. It's a tribute to the ranchers who work the land, raise the beef, and keep the Lone Star proud. Second Pour: Garrison Brothers BALMORHEA In the second half, Big Chief and the Joneses uncork a Texas legend—Garrison Brothers Balmorhea. Double-oaked and damn near divine, this whiskey is rich, velvety, and unapologetically Texan. Think caramel, honey, toasted pecans, and a kiss of vanilla. Big Chief calls it “bourbon candy in a bottle”—and he ain't wrong. Why This Ain't Just Another Bar The Rackhouse isn't just a stop along the trail—it's the whole journey. With live blues drifting over the lake, a menu full of steaks seared to cowboy perfection, and a bourbon list that reads like a love letter to America's native spirit, this place feeds more than your appetite. It feeds your soul. Because like a good pour of whiskey, food made with love has a way of grounding you, of slowing down time. It brings people together around the fire, just like the stories we tell—and the ones we drink to. So pour a glass, cut into that steak, and join Big Chief on another unforgettable ride. This is The Whiskey Trip—and this leg of the journey is one hell of a ride.

This weekly broadcast examines current events from across the globe to learn what's happening in all areas of people activity. We cultivate Counter-Racist Media Literacy by scrutinizing journalists' word choices and using logic to deconstruct what is reported as "news." We'll use these sessions to hone our use of terms as tools to reveal truth, neutralize Racists/White people. #ANTIBLACKNESS In Texas, historic flooding of the Guadalupe River left more than 100 residents deceased and catastrophic disaster in the Lone Star state. Sade Perkins, a black female and former member of the Houston Food Insecurity Board until January 2025, made the same observation about one aspect of the storm as Gus T. Kerrville's Camp Mystic, a decades running Christian program for White girls, is in a high flood risk area and suffered devastating losses. Perkins and Gus highlighted that not too many non-white girls are Camp Mystic alums and there are online photos of young White campers "cosplaying" as "native americans." Also, there were many reports in mainstream news outlets about the shrinking numbers of births around the world. Dr. Frances Cress Welsing reminds us people classified as White constitute less than 10% of the global population. Gus T. also makes time to acknowledge how he upset Ms. Sheena Scarbrough with a social media post. Gus wrong for tagging Ms. Scarbrough in the post. It was very unfortunate, and, hopefully, will be quickly erased from the legacy of Sade C. Robinson and the superb work Ms. Scarbrough has done with Sade's Voice Foundation. #SobrietyWouldBeBest #INVEST in The C.O.W.S. - https://cash.app/$TheCOWS #TheCOWS16Years CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE: 564943#

That followed early experience with authority hauling cars a couple decades back, based outside Chicago where Bruns is from originally, then pneumatic tanker work as a company driver, all of it in prep for where the owner-operator is today, married with two young children and back out on his own with authority as Bruns Trucking: https://overdriveonline.com/15749776 He restarted that authority a year and a half back, and with authority-age requirements so many brokers have today, up until recently he's hauled power only with dry vans for several large outfits, now testing the waters with a step deck trailer fairly recently purchased, where he's seeing good rates with the trailer in service for just a couple of months. The owner-op's making plenty time for outside pursuits, too. One of the reasons we came together last week was his then-impending competition in this past weekend's Semi Stampede uphill truck drag race competition at Kunle Motorsports Park due south of Cleveland: https://overdriveonline.com/15748980 Bruns attended with his big-truck-fan son last year, and this year was planning to compete in the stock class, bobtail. "I don't need to throw my driveshaft out," he quipped. Indeed, and you can find a video from his competition here: https://www.facebook.com/share/r/1DXAzYJ5qF/ (Unfortunately, the LoneStar got outrun in that one by a Pete, but I'm certain the experience was nonetheless one to remember.) Privacy invasions, robot surveillance, and the surprising return of beloved cult classics dominate this week's tech landscape. Meta has been caught red-handed using tactics similar to digital criminals to secretly harvest web browsing data from Android devices through a backdoor approach that even Google wasn't aware of. The technique mirrors malicious software, planting itself on phones and bypassing security settings by default—a disturbing revelation that should prompt users to reconsider their browser choices.Meanwhile, autonomous vehicles like Waymo have become rolling surveillance systems, their 360-degree cameras constantly recording everything and everyone they pass. Police departments in San Francisco and Phoenix are already issuing warrants for this footage, raising profound questions about our surveillance-saturated future. When you step into a robo-taxi, you're essentially signing away your privacy rights—just one more way we're trading convenience for constant monitoring. On a lighter note, the 1987 cult classic Spaceballs is finally getting a sequel in 2027. Could it be called "The Schwartz Awakens"? It will reunite original cast members including Mel Brooks as Yogurt, Rick Moranis as Dark Helmet, and Bill Pullman as Lone Star, while introducing new characters including Bill Pullman's real-life son Lewis as "Starburst." In other fascinating developments, Chinese researchers have achieved remarkable accuracy in reconstructing human faces from DNA alone, scientists have genetically engineered spiders to produce glowing red silk, and space station microbes are evolving new protective features against radiation. The technological landscape continues to advance at breathtaking speed—for better and sometimes worse.Join us each week as we navigate these technological developments with expert analysis and our signature touch of whiskey appreciation. Whether you're concerned about privacy, excited about entertainment, or fascinated by scientific breakthroughs, Tech Time Radio brings you the insights that matter most, without the technical jargon.Support the show

Few companies have inspired more fanatical devotion among Texans than the convenience chain Buc-ee's. Described by the New York Times as both a “Disneyland of roadside capitalism” and the “through line of America's second most sprawling state,” its iconic, buck-toothed beaver mascot has been spotted not just on billboards, but on wedding cakes and tattooed arms of its most loyal customers. Founded as a small-town gas station, today it boasts 47 locations across the South known for massive floor spaces brimming with souvenirs, fudge, BBQ stations, cases of jerky, and walls of branded snacks like “beaver nuggets.”  Yet unlike other treasured Lone Star enterprises like Whataburger, Blue Bell, or the grocery chain H-E-B, Buc-ee's ascendance has been a fast, recent phenomenon. They are also far from the first convenience chain to endear themselves to travelers through reliably clean restrooms, kitschy gifts and road food. In fact, one could argue they stand on the shoulders of the Georgia-born Stuckey's, whose nutty treats sparked a mid-century rest stop empire.  Today, both brands find themselves at a crossroads. Buc-ee's is rapidly expanding, while following years of corporate mismanagement and decline, Stuckey's is rebuilding itself one pecan log roll at a time.  In this episode we'll ride shotgun with Gravy producer Evan Stern as he explores how food has shaped these companies' brand identities, how they're grappling with change, and what their stories reveal about the past, present, and future of snacking on the American road. Along the way, we'll step inside a Buc-ee's that sprawls over 65,000 square feet, get to know some devoted customers, and hear from journalist Eric Benson, who argues this chain has come to symbolize 21st-century Texas. We'll also meet Stephanie Stuckey, who, following a career in politics and environmental law, now serves as the chair of Stuckey's. She shares her grandfather's journey from pecan broker to gas station magnate, how she envisions Stuckey's evolving, and why the road trip remains ingrained in the company's DNA. The resulting piece is a profile of two brands that have shaped and continue to make American highways a “corridor of consumption.” Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The rumble of engines, gleaming chrome, and stories spanning generations fill the air as we broadcast live from the Lone Star Street Rod Association's 50th Anniversary State Run in Granbury, Texas. Father's Day weekend provides the perfect backdrop for this celebration of automotive passion that bridges past and present. Our first guest, Steven Rogers, exemplifies this connection with his beloved 1966 Chevrolet truck. For 31 years, this vehicle has been his constant companion – from high school daily driver to weekend cruiser. "It was in good shape when we got it. We've done things to it along the way," he shares, detailing upgrades from the original 283 engine to a 350 small block and the addition of an overdrive transmission to better handle modern highway speeds. What makes Rogers' story particularly poignant is how he's successfully passed his passion to his teenage children, who now eagerly anticipate this annual gathering.Between guests, we explore the fascinating history of hot rod culture, which emerged primarily from post-WWII California as enthusiasts modified pre-war cars for increased performance. From traditional T-buckets and Deuce coupes to modern interpretations with advanced technology, the hot rod community continues to thrive by balancing innovation with reverence for automotive history. Our conversation shifts to the current automotive landscape, including concerning recalls affecting major manufacturers and how buying priorities have evolved across generations. While older enthusiasts often selected vehicles based on engine options and modification potential, today's market reflects different values – raising questions about the future of automotive individuality in an era moving toward standardization.Throughout the park, fathers introduce children to the joy of motorsports and mechanical tinkering, ensuring these traditions continue despite industry changes. The event isn't just a display of remarkable vehicles; it's a community sharing stories, techniques, and the universal pleasure of automotive creativity.Join our community of car enthusiasts by subscribing to the podcast and following us on social meBe sure to subscribe for more In Wheel Time Car Talk! The Lupe' Tortilla RestaurantsLupe Tortilla in Katy, Texas Gulf Coast Auto ShieldPaint protection, tint, and more!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Shortly after graduating high school, Ed Gale — who stood 3'4” tall — left Michigan with $40 in his pocket and went to Hollywood. Gale said his goal was never to become a leading man, but to make a living as a working actor… and that he did, appearing in more than 200 television shows, commercials, and films. Upon arriving in Hollywood the first role he was offered was none other than Howard the Duck — a role he was originally told he was “too tall for.” Gale continued to work up until his passing in May of 2025.On this episode I'm recommending four films that Gale appeared in. In many of his acting roles (including most of these) Gale appeared wearing masks and costumes, but as Rollo from Under the Rainbow once said, “no dream is too big, and no dreamer too small.”Child's Play 2 (1990)Two years after the original hit theaters, Chucky returned to once again torment Andy Barclay. While the original Child's Play was straight horror, this is the film in which Chucky began to develop the personality we know and love today. Keep an eye out for scenes in which Chucky runs around; that's Ed Gale in costume.Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey (1991)Bill and Ted have a problem: despite being told they will eventually become the biggest band in the universe, they still don't know how to play their instruments and their girlfriends are fed up with them. Oh, and evil robots from the future have come back to murder them, so there's that. Featuring a stellar soundtrack and lots of jokes, Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey did not perform as well as the original in theaters, but has become a cult classic since. Keep an eye out for Station in the film — that's Ed Gale!Spaceballs (1987)In this Mel Brooks masterpiece, Princess Vespa has been kidnapped by Dark Helmet and his cohorts and must be rescued by Lone Star and his faithful companion, Barf. If it all sounds a bit silly it is. Featuring an all-star cast and more Mel Brooks humor than you can swing a lightsaber at. Keep an eye out for Ed Gale as one of the Dinks, and may the Schwartz be with ya!O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)In this Coen Brothers film, three members of a chain gang escape when one of them tells the other two he's chained to that he knows where more than a million dollars worth of treasure is buried. Loosely based on Homer's Odyssey, this is another film with a star-studded cast and an award winning soundtrack. Ed Gale makes an appearance as “the Little Man” during an election and in this appearance, you can actually see his face! (After seeing it, you may recognize him from Bones, My Name is Earl, and many other roles.)Whether he appeared in a speaking role or in a costume, Gale gave every one of his roles 100% and swore people could see him smiling through the masks he wore. After watching these four films, you just might agree with him.Subscribe now to the Video Store Podcast to receive a lifetime supply of popcorn. Offer valid at any of our physical locations.
