On today's call I have the pleasure of welcoming Author, Consultant and Managing Director at Cerenti Marketing Group, Sandeep Dayal, to talk about his book Branding Between the Ears, and we explore the importance of rethinking how to appeal to consumers using cognitive science to build lasting customer connections and epic brands. Sandeep a seasoned marketing and strategy leader at the consulting firm Cerenti Marketing Group. He serves as a counsellor to C-suite executives and board members at Global Fortune 500 companies and has helped clients build blockbuster brands in markets spanning the EU, Latin America, Asia and the US. He has co-authored articles in Marketing Management, McKinsey Quarterly and Strategy+Business. During this content-rich call, Sandeep shares that your brand is what peoples' brains make of it. And in his book, Right Between the Ears, he lays out an entirely new approach, based on years of development and real-world testing, that he calls Cognitive Branding, for designing and building epic brands.Sandeep uses the theories of behavioural science to understand how to successfully market a brand, and has used his concept of 'cognitive branding' with top brands like Kraft, Phillips, Unilever and Mastercard to name just a few. During this wonderfully content-rich call, Sandeep reveals how findings from brain science are used in marketing, and how savvy marketers are now turning to the cognitive sciences to understand exactly how the brain works and leveraging that knowledge to forge conscious and subconscious connections with consumers. This is one of our favourite ever episodes. Sean and Paul once again had the pleasure of Graham's company for a loving and hugely enjoyable tribute to his late friend and prolific songwriting partner Andrew Gold. Graham shows his massive admiration and love for this supremely talented multi-instrumentalist, who rose to prominence as musical maestro with Linda Rondstadt, among others. He gives a comprehensive account of his involvement with Andrew, from his introduction to the Ten Out of Ten album in 1981, when the Californian was brought in at the behest of the U.S. record company. The spark was lit, and Gouldman sought him out soon after he and Eric parted ways. We hear the complete story of how the duo Common Knowledge was formed, in Graham's home studio, and we hear lots and lots of never-heard-before songwriting demos. Once again, we thank Graham and David Jarvis for these wonderful recordings, spanning their collaborations from 1986 to 1997. With their second project, now named Wax, the pair had their breakthrough hit with with the storming Right Between the Eyes. There was an infectious energy about this new music, all but completely missing from 10cc's post-70s output. We shine a torch on the highlights of all four of Wax's album releases: Magnetic Heaven, American English, A Hundred Thousand in Fresh Notes and Bikini. Sean even gets out his guitar to quiz Graham on a song he hugely admires: Wax's biggest UK hit, Bridge to Your Heart. “I presented this idea to the executives at Capitol Records and they kinda just laughed me out of the building...” ~Evan Saxon After a funny and bizarre episode open... where Martin says, “I’m not even going to edit that!” the two settle in and get to the business at hand. Evan shares his bumpy early academic career bouncing between junior colleges and SDSU / Northridge Universities. Ultimately, Evan drops out, as he puts it, "the pursuit of a career got in the way of my pursuit of a degree." Consumed by his passion for music and the music industry, Evan got his lucky break starting out as an intern at IRS Records. Then he moved into the marketing division of Capitol Records where he was offered a paid position. "I loved it! I didn't care what time I had to get up or how late I had to work. I was having a great time!" Years later, a bit disillusioned by what he saw in multiple executive meetings — fighting the status quo “losing control vs. taking control” as Evan puts it, he realized it was time to move on. One night at a Aerosmith / Skid Row concert a wild idea occurred to him. A totally innovative concept (at the time) that proved to be ground-breaking. He realized that he could promote new bands and music in between the opening bands and the headliners. Evan then negotiated deals with music retailers for shelf space, “Right Between the Acts” was born.
