In this episode of the Kate Bush Fan Podcast, Seán introduces Darrell's chat with Pat Martin, bass guitarist with British band Unicorn. Because of his close association with Dave Gilmour of Pink Floyd, he was asked to play for the young Cathy Bush's first ever recording at the age of fifteen in 1973. Pat can be heard on ‘Passing Through Air' from this session which was released as a B-side to ‘Army Dreamers' in 1980. The late, Ricky Hopper is also discussed. It was through him that Kate's music was heard in the first place, championing her relentlessly. We get to hear how Pat was invited to this session at Gilmour's house, and his fond remembrances of the young and shy Cathy. He knew there was something very special and that here was an artist, sure and confident about her craft. We also get to hear wonderful stories about Pat's involvement with Unicorn, and the amazing artists they worked with, including Patti Smith, Fleetwood Mac and Linda Rondstadt among many otters. Unicorn's song 'Ooh Mother' was recently played in the USA TV drama ‘Paradise'. It has resulted in the song being streamed 115k times on Spotify. It's worth a listen.

Note: This beautiful 45 record comes in a vintage Capitol Records factory sleeve. It has no notable flaws, grading Mint across the board (Labels, Vinyl, Audio).

Guess who was behind hits like the Turtles' "Happy Together" or CSN&Y's "Ohio?" It was renowned drummer Johny Barbata who sadly passed away unexpectedly last month. Johny's extraordinary talent and versatility made him a pivotal figure in rock and pop music. Starting his career in the 1960s, Johny first gained prominence as a member of The Turtles, where his dynamic drumming powered hits like "Happy Together" and "She'd Rather Be With Me." His innovative style and rhythmic precision caught the attention of major bands and artists, leading him to join Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, where he contributed to their classic live album "4 Way Street." In the 70s, Johny's career soared even higher when he became the drummer for Jefferson Airplane, later transitioning to Jefferson Starship. His powerful beats and creative percussion were instrumental in shaping the band's sound on iconic tracks like "Volunteers" and "Miracles." Throughout his career, Johny Barbata's drumming was characterised by its technical proficiency, adaptability across genres, and ability to enhance the music's emotional impact. John's influence extended beyond his performances; he was also a mentor and inspiration to countless drummers. His autobiography, "The Legendary Life of a Rock Star Drummer," offers an in-depth look at his journey through the highs and lows of the music industry. Despite facing numerous challenges, including a serious car accident, Barbata's resilience and passion for music kept him active in the industry until the day he died. Johny Barbata continues to be celebrated as one of rock's greatest drummers, known for his contributions to some of the most memorable songs in music history. His legacy is marked by his unique ability to blend technical skill with expressive artistry, leaving an indelible mark on every band he ever played with. This week, I'm honouring the late Johny Barbata by featuring a recent interview we did together. During our conversation he sheds light on what it was like to be a famous rock star and how in demand he constantly was as a session drummer. Artists like Jackson Browne, Linda Rondstadt and Neil Young couldn't get enough of him. Find out why by listening to him tell his story. If you'd like to know more about the life and times of Johny Barbata, pick yourself up a copy of his book Johnt Barbata- The Legendary Life of a Rock Star Drummer - available from Amazon https://www.amazon.com.au/Johny-Barbata-Legendary-Life-Drummer/dp/7774585796 I hope you enjoy the celebration of John's life and music. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/sandy-kaye3/message

Alyssa Medina and Ben Rafferty have been playing together for years now, but it was only about a year ago that they decided to come together and form the duo Violet Breeze. They wanted to be able to play whatever they decided, along with travel to various venues across Colorado and beyond, so they formed a duo.Their name started as an inside joke – after trying to get away with a name that incorporated nicknames they use for each other (“Hairdo” and “Barf,” respectively), they settled on the name Violet Breeze, referencing the breaking wind of Medina's dog. They play songs from many different influences, from straight songs by Susan Tedeschi, Bonnie Raitt, and Linda Rondstadt to mashups of Keller Williams and Madonna, along with Boyz II Men, Rancid, and Soundgarden. They also work in Rafferty's original songs every now and again, as he's been writing songs for over 20 years now. His first spark in music came after seeing Def Leppard's classic “Pour Some Sugar on Me” on MTV, and while he initially focused on drums, he eventually shifted to the piano.......READ MORE Thank you for listening to The Mountain-Ear podcast featuring the news and culture from peak to peak.SUBSCRIBE ONLINE and use the COUPON CODE PODCAST FOR A 10% Discount for ALL NEW SUBSCRIBERS https://www.themtnear.com/subscribe/ You can find us online by visiting https://www.themtnear.com/Find us on Facebook @mtnearYou can contact our editor at info@themountainear.com.Thank you for listening.

They talk about how the fact that the album was written over the course of five days impacted its sound (1:00), how she's moved away from the electronic sounds of 'Heard It In A Past Life' and toward the sounds of Linda Rondstadt and Sheryl Crow (32:05), and how her friendships play a major role on this record (48:01). David Bowie would leave the glam rock genre of his previous albums for a more soulful sound with his ninth studio album, Young Americans. This album features blue eyed soul, or what Bowie would refer to as "plastic soul." David Bowie moved to the United States in 1974 during a time when tax concerns were driving many artists out of the UK. He was living in New York City at the time, and starting production on the album in Philadelphia where he worked with guitarist Carlos Alomar. A funk guitarist, Alomar had worked as a session musician at the Apollo Theater and would become a collaborator and band leader for Bowie over the next decade. In addition to Carlos Alomar, Bowie worked on this album with a number of artists including Robin Clark, Ava Cherry, saxophonist David Sanborn, and a new musician named Luther Vandross. He would also collaborate on this album with ex-Beatle John Lennon who was recording in New York at the same time as Bowie's recording moved there. Bowie and Lennon had met previously at a party hosted by Elizabeth Taylor. Lennon collaborated with Bowie during his "lost weekend" period.Young Americans contains elements of soul, funk, and R&B, and was a deliberate attempt to garner more success in the U.S. market. It certainly achieved this result, though critics would deliver mixed reviews. The transition from glam rock to blue-eyed soul would not be one which all fans embraced, but David Bowie would follow his own creative muse. It would not be the last time we would see a significant stylistic change from Bowie. It was nevertheless a commercial success, going to number 9 on the US albums chart, remaining on the charts for almost a year.Rob brings us this funky example of “plastic soul.” Young AmericansThe title track was recorded in Philadelphia, and hit number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100, Bowie's second-highest chart success to this date. Then unknown singer Luther Vandross conceived the backing vocal arrangement. The song provides impressions of American life through the eyes of an English man. David Sanborn provides the saxophone work.Across the UniverseThis cover of the Beatles song also found collaboration with Beatles' alumnus John Lennon. Backing vocals and guitar are provided by Lennon, who considered this song a better version than his own. Critics tend to disagree, as reviews on the Bowie version were primarily negative.FascinationThis track began as a jam by Luther Vandross entitled “Funky Music (Is a Part of Me)” which was performed before the Bowie concerts in 1974. When Vandross was retained from the “Diamond Dogs” tour, the two collaborated to create the song “Fascination.” The song was an homage to the Philadelphia funk sound.FameThis single hit number 1 on the US charts, the first Bowie song to do so. Composed by Bowie, Alomar, and Lennon, the high backing “Fame” vocalizations are provided by John Lennon. Bowie would describe it as a “nasty, angry” song directed at management with which he had previous issues. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Ease On Down the Road by Consumer Rapport (from the motion picture The Wiz)A soulful take on The Wizard of Oz featured Diana Ross as Dorothy and Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow. STAFF PICKS:Judy Mae by Boomer Castleman Wayne initiates the staff picks with a controversial song that went to number 33 on the Billboard Hot 100. The lyrics tell of a father to a 17 year-old girl who marries a woman half his age. When an affair ensures between the stepmother and the daughter, the father dies of an accident shortly thereafter. It feels like a racier version of “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia.”Long Haired Country Boy by the Charlie Daniels BandBrian brings us a song about a guy with a very passive attitude about life. “I ain't asking for nobody for nuthin' that I can't get on my own. If you don't like the way I'm livin' you just leave this long-haired country boy alone.” It was off the second album from the CDB entitled “Fire on the Mountain.”When Will I Be Loved by Linda Ronstadt Bruce features Ronstadt doing a cover originally from the Everly Brothers in 1960. While the original peaked at number 8, Ronstadt's cover would go to number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song is a vocal trio between Ronstadt, Kenny Edwards, and Andrew Gold. Trampled Under Foot by Led Zeppelin Rob finishes the staff picks with a song John Paul Jones claims was inspired by Stevie Wonder's “Superstition.” The lyrics were inspired by blues artist Robert Johnson's “Terraplane Blues” from 1936. A Terraplane was a classic car that serves as a not-so-subtle source for sexual innuendo. It is off the band's double album, “Physical Graffiti.” COMEDY TRACK:Bertha Butt Boogie by The Jimmy Castor Bunch This funk novelty track went to number 16 on the US pop chart and number 22 on the US R&B chart.

taken years to get Danny Kortchmar alone in the Game Changers guest seat, having paid us a couple of previous visits with his Immediate Family brothers. This Danny is kinder, gentler, and oh, so fun. He's been leaning more and more in this direction to my view since falling in love with Lisa Roy, even after surviving the devastating loss of her life. She was the love of his, and it appears she did him a world of lasting good. Danny will be the first to admit he can be serious and… cranky. No sign of that guy this evening… just great stories of some of the greatest musicians of our time, from one of them, all wonderfully, entertainingly, told. We may have even heard a few previously undocumented firsts… starting as a kid discovering early rock 'n roll, to very soon playing it, summering on Martha's Vineyard, and the early teenage friendship that would change his life. Jamie, as Kootch calls James Taylor, who talked him into some questionable behavior, then blamed him, classic! Not something I'd imagine or associate with sweet baby James. Their lifelong friendship, their musical collaboration, how it started, and why it ended. Meeting, working, and loving Peter Asher, Lou Adler, Carole King, Russ Kunkel, Leland Sklar, Waddy Wachtel, Linda Rondstadt, and Jackson Browne. The story behind Somebody's Baby. We talked about his extensive successful producing career (although he has a caveat which was fascinating to hear) - including Jon Bon Jovi, Billy Joel, Toto, and his extensive collaboration with Don Henley, the great and the tough of it. There are no endings with Kootch. Once family, always family. He remains close to all of them. And speaking of family, Danny spoke to the birth, development, and current state of affairs of The Immediate Family, his beloved creation. His frustration with the pandemic's impact and the conflicting work schedules of his brothers doesn't dampen his passion for their new album yet to drop, and their soon-to-be-released brilliant Denny Tedesco documentary, Immediate Family. There is remorse that Waddy Wachtel's commitment as Stevie Nick's musical director, a position he's held for 25 years will keep him from 5 scheduled live shows, but Danny did drop some news… The Cars Elliot Easton will be jumping in for those shows, certainly softening the blow. This time with Danny was a joyous romp through the musical soundtrack of so much of my life. His songs, and his playing, are forever etched in my heart and soul. The man sure do know how to rock 'n roll. Good God! Tracking with her brand: “an old soul inside a 30-something millennial,” Alice Howe‘s latest was recorded at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, AL. Although the legendary studio has seen massive icons like Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett and Etta James recording their biggest hits, the building itself is quite unremarkable. Regardless, Alice was able to soak up the incredible vibe that ugly wood-paneled space offers over the course of the recording sessions, which was done in two parts. Freebo, her frequent collaborator and bassist, helmed the production and joined us for this interview. The two gave some insight into the way they communicate and how that works itself out in a studio setting. We dig into some of the songs on the new record Circumstance, including “What About You,” which comes along with a music video featuring some very playful sides of Alice, including some very femme scenes of her at the pool and on the beach. We got into an interesting discussion of different ways women portray themselves in music, using Bonnie Raitt and Linda Rondstadt prototypes. Not sure if we reached a consensus, but I enjoyed getting into it! We also get into how Freebo is a goofball AND a cool-guy scholar and how those traits translate into his and into Alice's music. And we leave some space for Alice and Freebo to fawn all over Freebo's former collaborator, Bonnie Raitt, and her recent song of the year award at the 2023 Grammys. It's always so fun to talk to Alice (who was also on episode 72!) and we have a doubly good time with Freebo.
