How do you keep innovating and disrupting when you're already the incumbent? And how do you prevent a $200B+ company from becoming slow and complacent? In this episode, CJ is joined by Sandeep Aujla, CFO of Intuit, who shares how one of the world's largest software companies continues to operate with the agility of a startup. With QuickBooks, TurboTax, Credit Karma, and MailChimp all falling in the Intuit family tree, serving both consumers and businesses, Sandeep breaks down the company's platform strategy, explains how he tells a unified story across these product lines, and describes how he prioritizes capital allocation. He also talks about Intuit's efforts to leverage AI to improve internal efficiencies, insights into the ideal CFO-CTO relationship, tactics for saying no, the benefits of letting stuff break, and how finance helped uncover a major growth opportunity for Intuit in the mid-market. The conversation touches on the company's 25 golden metrics, why leap years and the Super Bowl affect revenue, and the lesson Sandeep learned from a $2 coffee.—LINKS:Sandeep Aujla: https://www.linkedin.com/in/aujla/Intuit: https://www.intuit.com/CJ on X (@cjgustafson222): https://x.com/cjgustafson222Mostly metrics: —TIMESTAMPS:(00:00) Preview and Intro(02:30) Sponsor – Pulley | Brex | Aleph(07:11) Sandeep's Career Journey at Intuit(09:41) The Stigma Around CFOs and Seriousness(11:01) Being the Disruptor When You're Already the Incumbent(14:04) Intuit: Software, Payments, or Services Company?(15:21) Sponsor – RightRev | Navan | NetSuite |(19:00) The Intuit Family Tree(20:14) Cross-Platform Network Effects(21:54) Telling a Unified Story Across Multiple Product Lines(25:24) How Finance Discovered a Mid-Market Growth Opportunity(28:56) Reducing Churn by Keeping Customers on Platform(31:04) How Small Businesses Are Evolving To Leverage Tech and AI(34:11) How Sandeep Prioritises Capital Allocation(37:17) Tactics for Saying No Gracefully as a CFO(39:39) The Benefits of Letting Stuff Break(43:10) Reinvesting Across the Business: Consumer Versus Business(45:36) The CFO-CTO Relationship in the Age of AI(49:45) Tracking Intuit's Target for Internal AI Efficiency(52:06) Surprising Usage Patterns: Leap Years, Game of Thrones, etc(53:15) The Different Use Cases for AI Internally(55:48) The 25 Golden Metrics That Matter(58:45) Leap Years and Other Surprising Things That Impact the Business(1:00:04) Long-Ass Lightning Round: A Deadline Mistake(1:02:04) Advice to Younger Self(1:03:48) Finance Software Stack(1:04:36) A Bonus Question: Printed Notes(1:05:17) Craziest Expense Story—SPONSORS:Pulley is the cap table management platform built for CFOs and finance leaders who need reliable, audit-ready data and intuitive workflows, without the hidden fees or unreliable support. In this second compilation focused on emerging markets, we revisit conversations featuring three investors who are channeling substantial capital into regions where others hesitate to go – and they're doing it with discipline, innovation, and deep local insight. Each of these guests brings a different strategy and perspective, but all are working toward the same goal: building sustainable, scalable businesses that meet the needs of underserved communities. And they're doing it in ways that challenge the old assumptions: that impact comes at the expense of return, that emerging markets are too volatile to be investable, or that scalable solutions must come from the West. Here are the featured voices:Sandeep Farias, Founder and Managing Partner of Elevar EquityElevar backs what they call entrepreneurial households – more than 50 million families across emerging markets who've moved beyond the bottom of the pyramid. While they're making economic progress, they still lack access to the products and services that support their ambitions and daily lives.Sandeep and his team take a bottom-up, equity-focused approach to identify the “core solutions” these families prioritize – like education, healthcare, and agriculture – and invest in entrepreneurs building businesses to serve them. With five funds deployed across India and Latin America, Elevar stays close to both customers and founders, spending time in the field to understand how people live, what they value, and where capital can make the greatest difference.Full episode Rochus Mommartz, the CEO of responsAbilityRochus leads responsAbility – one of the world's largest dedicated impact asset managers, with $5 billion under management and more than $15 billion deployed across emerging markets since inception. His team doesn't start with products. They start with problems – like the 500 million people in Africa who still lack electricity, or the small businesses across Asia and Latin America that can't get financing. Then they find the companies solving those problems and shape capital to support their growth.Rochus draws a clear line between real and perceived risk. Emerging markets aren't short on opportunity – they're just often misunderstood by investors who rely too much on spreadsheets and not enough on what's actually happening on the ground.Check out the full interview: Part 1Part 2Sugandhi Matta, Chief Impact Officer at ABC ImpactSugandhi helped launch ABC Impact with backing from Temasek and Temasek Trust – and helped shape it into the largest Pan-Asian private equity fund dedicated to impact. From the start, her focus has been on building a strategy rooted in Asia's realities – not imported from somewhere else. That meant starting with evidence: mapping the region's most urgent needs, identifying where scalable solutions could take hold, and designing an impact framework from the ground up.ABC now manages close to $1 billion across sectors like healthcare, financial inclusion, sustainable food, and climate resilience. On this episode we debated the City Council's plans to get tough on graffiti by introducing civil penalties up to $1,500 per violation. The change would make it easier to fine taggers. Erica questioned the council's priorities and aesthetics, and pointed out that graffiti is already a crime or felony (if it costs more than $750 to repair). Sandeep mostly spoke in favor of the new measure, citing studies that find tolerance for graffiti can lead to more crime. But he also questioned the value of going after taggers as opposed to more serious criminals. The discussion also touched on prevailing academic and cultural claims that graffiti tagging operates mostly as a form of multi-ethnic working-class expression or protest. David pointed to the data reported in Publicola that suggests that may not be the case, at least in Seattle, since 85 percent of the people "referred to Ann Davison's office for graffiti violation were white." Erica said the sample size is too small to conclude most taggers are white. Sandeep argued bringing race into the conversation was a needlessly "identitarian" move by the City Council. Another point of contention was a poll that's testing negative messaging against mayoral candidate Katie Wilson. All agreed the test messages claiming Wilson is "divisive" and "angry" missed the mark and were unlikely to be effective. We also discussed earlier progressive campaign tactics that misfired by attempting to link moderate candidates, such as Mayor Bruce Harrell, to Donald Trump. David asked if we'll see more of that messaging from campaigns and advocates in 2025 and, given Trump's unpopularity in Seattle, if it will work? Plus, we delve into John Arthur Wilson's campaign suspension in the race for King County Executive, following harassment allegations. What took him so long? Send us a text! PROGRAM NOTE: We hope all you Seattle Nice fans will join us for a live taping of the podcast at 7 pm on July 15 at the next meeting of the 43rd District Democrats, held at the Erickson Theater on Capitol Hill, 1524 Harvard Avenue. We'll be previewing the upcoming primary, and there'll be a chance for audience questions. Council President Sara Nelson, flanked by homeless services and treatment providers and neighborhood representatives, held a press conference last week to announce that she is introducing a “Pathways to Recovery” resolution that would commit the city to use 25 percent of a future public safety sales tax toward drug and mental health treatment services. The legislature gave cities and counties the authority to pass a 0.1 percent sales tax for public safety earlier this yearErica and Sandeep dissect Nelson's proposal on the latest episode of Seattle Nice, and the mayor's non-committal response to it. We take a close look at what the Council prez is proposing to fund and some of the backroom politics swirling around the proposal. And we look at how this proposed new public spending fits into the city's overall budget picture and priorities.Erica expresses some skepticism about the need for more funding for police, and about the impact of increasing the regressive sales tax, which is already the highest in the nation. (She was also alarmed by the presence of groups that don't support evidence-based practice at Nelson's press conference). Sandeep argues that 100 percent of revenues from the new sales tax—expected to be adopted as part of the budget process this fall— should go to Nelson's treatment proposal, because the City isn't facing the big budget deficit they claims they are. In the end, while there is a lot of process yet to go before this new treatment funding becomes a reality, and while there still unanswered questions about how this funding will be divvied up, both Erica and Sandeep agree this is a positive step forward and that Nelson deserves credit for building a broad coalition of support behind it. Join us in this powerful episode as we dive into the heart of river biodiversity and conservation in South India with Sandeep Menon of the Wildlife Association of South India (WASI). Discover the story of the critically endangered humpback mahseer (Tor remadevii), a keystone and iconic fish species endemic to the Cauvery River and protected within the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary. This episode highlights the urgent need for fish conservation, biodiversity management, and sustainable engagement with river ecology in the face of rising threats to freshwater ecosystems.Founded in 1972—the same year India enacted its Wildlife Protection Act—WASI is one of Karnataka's oldest conservation organizations. While much of India's conservation history has centered on charismatic megafauna like tigers and elephants, WASI pioneered efforts to protect aquatic life, emphasizing the overlooked yet vital role of river systems. The humpback mahseer, often growing over five feet in length and weighing up to 50 kg, is not only ecologically important but holds deep cultural and mythological significance in Karnataka, with temple sanctuaries along the Cauvery River historically offering it protection.Sandeep explores how the health of the Cauvery River ecosystem is intrinsically tied to the survival of the mahseer. These fish require clean, oxygen-rich, fast-flowing waters for spawning and survival, making them a natural indicator of freshwater integrity. As dams fragment habitats and pollution disrupts flow regimes, the mahseer's survival becomes a symbol of broader freshwater conservation challenges. In this conversation, Sandeep outlines WASI's innovative three-pronged conservation strategy. The first is rigorous scientific research—including telemetry tracking, habitat mapping using drones and GIS, and an in-situ breeding program for the endangered humpback mahseer. Second, WASI physically protects stretches of the Cauvery by leasing river sections from the Fisheries Department—not for fishing, but for conservation. These stretches are patrolled to prevent poaching, dynamite fishing, and other destructive practices. Third, WASI has established a unique self-sustaining model: issuing catch-and-release angling licenses. Revenue from this ethical angling supports research, anti-poaching patrols, and community outreach, making conservation both participatory and economically viable.Importantly, this episode also touches on how catch-and-release practices are regulated with strict guidelines to minimize stress and injury to fish. From handling protocols to photographic limits and de-hooking tools, WASI's best practices ensure that angling becomes a force for conservation rather than exploitation.Listeners will also learn about the threats facing the humpback mahseer, such as declining water levels, hybridization with other mahseer species, habitat degradation, and the introduction of invasive species like grass carp. The episode details WASI's efforts to create India's first comprehensive management plans for aquatic sanctuaries—filling a critical gap in freshwater biodiversity conservation.Sandeep also emphasizes the critical role of public awareness and local engagement. From school and college volunteers conducting telemetry fieldwork to social media campaigns and community outreach with fishing communities, WASI's approach is deeply collaborative. Listeners passionate about wild Karnataka and namma Karnataka's rivers will find practical ways to get involved—whether through volunteering, spreading awareness, or supporting evidence-based river conservation. This conversation reminds us that beneath the surface of India's rivers lies an invisible world teeming with life, and that biodiversity conservation must include all species, from the tiger to the tiniest fish. Protecting the humpback mahseer is not just about saving one species; it's about restoring entire ecosystems, cultural heritage, and sustainable coexistence with nature.Watch now to understand why river biodiversity matters, and how one organization is making a big impact in the waters of South India. This week, we're talking taxes—specifically, the new business and occupation (B&O) tax proposal that City Councilmember Alexis Mercedes Rinck and Mayor Bruce Harrell dropped, seemingly out of the blue, last week. The tax includes a big exemption that the business community has been seeking for a long time; however, above that threshold—$2 million in gross receipts—the tax will go up substantially. Because B&O taxes are based on gross receipts, they hit high-grossing, low-margin businesses like restaurants and grocery stores hardest, which is one reason they aren't generally considered progressive. In fact, neither of the groups the city set up to come up with new progressive revenue sources recommended a higher B&O tax. So what's really behind this new proposal? The mayor's up for reelection, facing a progressive challenge from Katie Wilson. Seattle's in a budget hole. And supporters of the measure may be taking a gamble that the Chamber won't fight too hard against the tax, because it includes a big tax exemption that small- and medium-size businesses have been seeking for years. With David still away gamboling in parts unnamed, Sandeep and Erica take up these questions and more on this week's episode of Seattle Nice. Our editor is Quinn Waller. The King County Regional Homelessness Authority (KCRHA) launched in 2020 with great fanfare. But now, with up to to a fifth of its staff facing layoffs due to budget shortfalls, it may be facing a slow death by a thousand cuts. In this week's episode, with David still gallivanting in parts unknown, Erica and Sandeep take a hard look at the current state of KCRHA, and ask a pointed question: What purpose, exactly, does this diminished and largely neutered agency serve? As Erica reported on PubliCola this week, KCRHA's budget proposal could lead to a 21 percent cut to its administrative budget (resulting in 22 job cuts) along with an across-the-board cut to homelessness services. KCRHA clearly hopes to persuade the city to increase its funding to stave off those cuts, though the initial response from city officials has been noncommittal at best. Budgetary wrangling aside, this back-and-forth is exposing the agency's flaws, including its clunky (and costly) reimbursement procedures, internal morale issues and power struggles, and the KCRHA's lack of independent taxing authority, which leaves the authority dependent on the largesse of elected officials at the city and county. With the city clawing back control of outreach and homelessness prevention efforts—and the agency no longer even pretending to operate independently—we discuss whether the only function KCRHA provides is to insulate local politicians from public scrutiny of their decisions on homelessness policy, strategy, and funding. Our editor is Quinn Waller. The Middle East is on fire. Again. What began as Israel's retaliation against Hamas after the October 7 attacks has now exploded into a multi-front conflict involving Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and now Iran. In this episode of In Our Defence, veteran journalist and national security expert Sandeep Unnithan joins host Dev Goswami to break down how the war escalated so dramatical, and what it means for the region and the world. The two look at Iran's underestimated military, its dual-army structure, and the massive blow dealt to its leadership in just the first week of fighting. Why does Israel seem so unbending, even at the cost of global condemnation and regional chaos? And could any of this be happening without backing from the US? Dev and Sandeep also explore the philosophical irony behind Western nations - especially the US - dictating nuclear rules to countries like Iran, even as they maintain massive arsenals themselves. Is this another chapter in global double standards? And finally, the two unpack a surprising development: Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir's meeting with Donald Trump during his US visit. Could this signal a renewed American effort to position Pakistan as a behind-the-scenes player in the Israel-Iran war? Produced by Garvit Srivastava Sound mixed by Rohan Bharti

We start with the increasingly off-putting saga of King County Assessor John Arthur Wilson, who remains defiant in the face of a unanimous vote by the King County Council (minus the absent Reagan Dunn) urging him to resign over allegations he stalked his ex-partner during their breakup from hell. We ask: Why did the resignation calls take so long, and are we headed for a messy recall? (Hours after we taped this episode on the morning of Friday, June 13, a judge denied Wilson's legal motion seeking the dismissal of his ex-partner's protection order against him .) Next up, Josh keys off the announced resignation of Councilmember Cathy Moore to argue that what Moore and her supporters and backers decry as incivility in Council chambers is really just sour grapes about the rising voice of an emerging urbanist majority. But are the urbanists so ascendant, give the status quo nature of the comp plan currently under debate? Finally, we dig into the implications of Erica's reporting that the mayor is seeking to expand the city's powers to shutter “nuisance properties.” Is a crackdown on clubs warranted by recent incidents of gun violence that have occurred outside nightclubs and hookah lounges? Or is this just the latest iteration of a long, pinch-faced tradition in Seattle municipal politics of finger-wagging at—and passing laws to curtail—the city's nightlife? You can download your FREE report on how you can avoid financial mistakes as a dentist using the link just here >>> dentistswhoinvest.com/podcastreport———————————————————————What does it take to build a dental empire in today's competitive landscape? Sandeep Kumar reveals the strategic pivots that transformed his career from a single practitioner to the architect behind a network of 150 dental practices spanning multiple countries.Qualified as a dentist in India, Kumar's journey began with working as a dental nurse in the UK before requalifying in 2000. Within just three years, he purchased his first practice and dramatically expanded it from one surgery to six. But the real transformation came when he made the courageous decision to step away from clinical dentistry entirely in 2017—a move many dentists fear would collapse their income."When you're starting out, there's no such thing called work-life balance," Kumar explains. "You just have to put your hours in and work your ass off. Nobody's going to teach you." This raw honesty about the entrepreneurial journey sets the tone for a conversation filled with practical wisdom rather than sugar-coated theory. The episode explores the evolution of dental marketing from Yellow Pages to digital strategies, the crucial shift from owner-operator to owner-only business models, and the birth of the MySmile Network—now 150 practices strong and expanding internationally. Kumar shares how finding time to analyze patient data led to the insight that transformed his business: customers were specifically asking for Invisalign by name, revealing an opportunity to build practices entirely around this treatment modality. For dentists contemplating business growth in 2025, Kumar offers three practical cornerstones: surround yourself with exceptional people, embrace technology to enhance patient understanding, and build your personal profile as patients increasingly research providers before making appointments. His philosophy of "who not how"—finding the right people rather than trying to do everything yourself—emerges as perhaps the most valuable lesson for scaling dental businesses beyond the limitations of your clinical hours.Whether you're an associate dreaming of practice ownership or an established principal looking to expand, this conversation offers a blueprint for building something extraordinary beyond the dental chair.———————————————————————Disclaimer: All content on this channel is for education purposes only and does not constitute an investment recommendation or individual financial advice. Inside India's Fight Against Naxalism | Is This the End of Red Terror? | Ft. Sandeep Unnithan In this deep-dive episode of In Our Defence, veteran defence journalist Sandeep Unnithan joins host Dev Goswami to unpack India's decades-long battle with Left Wing Extremism (LWE) — often called Naxalism or Red Terror — and the recent decisive push to eradicate it by March 2026. Dev and Sandeep explore the evolution of the Naxal movement from its origins in Naxalbari in 1967 to its spread across India's infamous “Red Corridor”, and the multi-pronged strategy that has brought the insurgency to its lowest levels in decades. Key topics include: The historic neutralisation of CPI (Maoist) General Secretary Basavaraju in Operation Black Forest The spike in encounters and surrenders in 2024–25 Why counter-insurgency in jungles is as deadly — and complex — as high-tech border warfare. Why the Indian Army was never deployed against Naxals — and what could have happened if they had. The role of urban intellectual support in sustaining the movement — and why that's now faded. This episode is an eye-opening look at one of India's longest-running internal conflicts, now seemingly entering its final phase. Tune in. Produced by Garvit Srivastava Sound mixed by Rohan Bharti

India's next-gen stealth fighter, the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), just got a massive push from the government with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh clearing an execution model for the jet's design and development. On this episode of In Our Defence, veteran defence journalist Sandeep Unnithan breaks down what this means for the future of Indian airpower, how private players like Tata and L&T could shape the aircraft production ecosystem, and what role the state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited is likely to play. Sandeep also decodes the different generations of fighter aircraft, detailing what makes a fifth-generation jet stand out from the current crop of Indian Air Force jets such as the Rafales, Tejas, Sukhois and Mirages, among others. The episode also features a discussion on India's attempts to develop its own fighter jet engine and how that quest -- unsuccessful so far -- becomes all the more important for the AMCA. A Seattle City Council committee advanced legislation last week that will eliminate a requirement that council members abstain from voting on legislation that presents a financial conflict of interest. Under the new, lower standard, the council will merely have to disclose any financial conflicts before voting—allowing council members, for the first time since the 1980s, to vote in their own financial interest.Sandeep thinks disclosing a conflict of interest before voting should be enough; Erica's with the haters who want more constraints on the council's ability to vote in their own self-interest.The legislation is moving forward quickly and will probably take effect just before the council votes on the elimination of several anti-eviction laws passed by the previous council, which might not pass if everyone on the council who's a landlord has to refrain from voting to repeal these laws. In related news, Kshama Sawant and her group Workers Strike Back are showing up to disrupt council meetings, antagonizing the council over the upcoming vote on the anti-eviction laws. David and Sandeep are fascinated by internal squabbling among Seattle's local socialists, while Erica argues that Sawant's latest "movement" is mostly bluster—and reminds everyone that Sawant worked tirelessly on Jill Stein's "Defeat Harris" campaign last year. Also this week: Tent City 4 gets a temporary reprieve after a last-minute effort to keep the self-managed encampment from moving to the former Lake City Community Center. And we discuss Dan Strauss' effort to require all clubs and other "loud music venues" to sell earplugs. David calls it a "modest public health campaign" but Sandeep says it's a nanny state intrusion into our god-given right to destroy our hearing. Our editor is Quinn Waller. Send us a text! Secret Role of Indian Navy in Attacking Pakistan | Cdr Sandeep Dhawan Explains
In this episode, veteran defence journalist Sandeep Unnithan joins host Dev Goswami to decode Operation Sindoor — India's response to Pahalgam terrorist attack.Sandeep and Dev dive deep into how India's layered air defence network, including the IACCS (Integrated Air Command and Control System), played a pivotal role in thwarting Pakistani aerial threats. What was the X factor that gave India the edge? Was the much-talked-about S-400 system deployed? What was sitaution like in the commmand and control centre? The two also explore the escalation ladder — a concept from military theory — and how India used it both during the days of fighting of Operation Sindoor and more broadly to counter Pakistan's nuclear posturing. Why is this theory studied so deeply in strategic circles? And how does it play out in real-time decision-making?Sandeep and Dev also look at the Indian Navy's posturing during the conflict as well as the roles played by the Indian Army and Indian Air Force. And as a final thought, the two discuss Pakistan's Kirana Hills and the speculation that the nuclear weapons storage site may have been hit during the operation.Produced by Prateek LidhooSound mix by Suraj Singh
