We take a look at the life of Solomon and the pursuit of all his desires and how they ended up only a striving after the wind. We find that nothing in this world will be totally satisfactory, fulfilling us ceaselessly. From this we know that only the worship and praise of God will bring us eternal satisfaction.

Pastor Jason leads us in looking more closely at Ecclesiastes 2:1-11. We believe the things we see have lasting value, but how do they stack up against the eternal things we cannot see? In truth, life apart from Christ is vanity.

James Corden, host of the Late Late Show and known for his Carpool Karaoke, chased every pleasure he could upon his arrival into celebrity. Yet after constant drinking, partying and nights sleeping, “In beds, I’d never slept in before, with girls I’d never met before,” he admitted that “The longer it went on, the emptier my should felt.” Like Solomon before him, James Corden discovered what all of us do if we chase after pleasure…that we “can’t get no satisfaction.” If you want to know the solution to this problem of pleasure, this message is for you.

“If you could write a letter to your 18-year-old self, what would you say?” Most 18-year-olds have heads full of hopes and dreams. They look forward to the future and everything it holds for them. Most can envision where they want to be and how they’re going to get there. The promises and the possibilities seem endless. At some point, however, the future becomes the present, and the possibilities start to dry up. Life has a funny way of subverting our expectations and changing our plans. Our own foolish mistakes can sabotage the future we had in mind for ourselves. For most of us, the future we envisioned at 18 isn’t the reality we currently live in. “If you could write a letter to your 18-year-old self, what would you say?” In a sense, the Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes seeks an answer to that question. Filled with the wisdom and perspective that can only come with age, this often overlooked book reminds us of the things that are truly important in this life. In so doing, Ecclesiastes confronts the mistakes we’ve all made in the past. More importantly, it challenges us to change the way we’re living today in order to change our future. This life only finds its meaning in light of eternity. We only find our meaning in the God who made us. We may not be able to change our past, but the future is still out there. Ecclesiastes 12:6: “Yes, remember your Creator now while you are young, before the silver cord of life snaps and the golden bowl is broken…” Selected Quotes: "Chasing happiness doesn't end in happiness." "Wisdom looks past the gifts to focus on the Giver. Instead of chasing what we don’t have, wisdom motivates us to find contentment in what we have already been given." "We find freedom when we stop chasing after Eden and instead focus on chasing the God who gives us Eden."

Everyone of us goes through life with a nagging sense that something's missing. There's a feeling of emptiness that leads to attempts on our part to fill the emptiness. For those of us that consider ourselves good and moral, it's easy to think that our biggest battle is to stay away from immoral pleasures in favor of immoral pleasures. However, the author of Ecclesiastes seems to think different. Innocent pleasures, don't always make for innocent pursuits. Sometimes our pursuit of very innocent things, can distract us from our true purpose of finding our true pleasure in God. We have to remember that we have an eternal palette that will swallow up every earthy pleasure and still leave you as an empty person. We were never meant to fill up on earthly pleasures but something more. God's gift to us is that earthly pleasures are only to serve as signposts towards the real pleasure--Himself!
