Most of us come to meditation because we want something—peace, clarity, or even awakening itself. While natural, this approach can carry a subtle trap: meditation becomes another project of the separate self, another way of trying to get something for “me.”But true awakening isn't about fixing or improving the self. It's about loosening our identification with the self altogether. In this episode, Craig invites us into a guided meditation that explores what it means to let go of wanting in our practice. Instead of sitting with subtle agendas, hoping to feel a certain way or reach a particular state, we're invited to meet this moment just as it is.The episode includes a full guided meditation, so we recommend listening at a time when you won't be interrupted. If the podcast has been meaningful to you, please consider leaving a rating or review, and click “Follow” or “Subscribe” in your app—it helps us share this work with more people. To access the full transcript of this episode and discover more resources, visit the episode page on MeditationChangesEverything.com. Tim Worton opens up the book of Ruth as we head into a break from Romans for a couple of weeks.
For over 50 years, Bob Woodward has had an uncanny ability to get sources talking—and to sell books. From Watergate to Trump, no political era has gone by without at least one Woodward tome promising to peel back the curtain on how Washington really works. Now, Woodward is out with his latest, the bluntly titled “War.” It's billed as a look at the end of the Joe Biden presidency and beginning of the second Trump era. But what it really shows is what happens when a reporter evolves from a muckraker into a reputation-launderer for the establishment.Joining us on the podcast today is Matt Duss, executive vice president of the Center for International Policy and former foreign policy adviser to Bernie Sanders. Duss's review of War is in the October books issue of the Nation. Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Psalm 92 and Ecclesiastes 2: Pleasure Ends in Emptiness - Seek Rather The Kingdom of God by Shawn Ozbun
Paul reminds us that we are no longer bound by the law, but adopted as sons and daughters of God. In Christ, we move from slavery to sonship, from duty to delight, and from emptiness to inheritance.
Christian emptiness can feel overwhelming, but in Christ, our emptiness becomes the very space He fills with His presence and peace. In How Emptiness Fills Our Souls, Peyton Garland shares her journey through OCD, therapy, and discovering how God uses our broken places to reveal His love and healing. If you’ve struggled with loneliness, anxiety, or spiritual dryness, this episode offers encouragement to see emptiness not as the end, but as the beginning of God’s work of restoration in your life. ✨ Highlights Ephesians 3:16–19: God strengthens and fills us through His Spirit How emptiness creates space for healing, hope, and God’s fullness Breaking free from cultural lies about independence and fulfillment Personal testimony of finding help through Christian counseling Why vulnerability opens doors to truth, peace, and lasting joy Emptiness as an opportunity to encounter God’s resurrection power

“The rain could turn to gold and still your thirst would not be slaked,” the Buddha said. He was pointing to the endless cycle of craving, the restless thirst that keeps us searching outside ourselves for satisfaction. Even if we were showered with gold, our longing would not end. So how do we free ourselves from this thirst? In this Fan Favorite episode, we look for the answer in understanding the connection between emptiness and craving. When Buddhism speaks of emptiness (shunyata), it doesn't mean that nothing exists. It means that nothing exists inherently or independently. Everything arises because of many causes and conditions. Think about a table. It seems to be a table all on its own. But in truth, it depends on wood, on carpenters, on the label "table," and on our own minds to recognize it. Without these causes (and many more), the table as we know it doesn't exist. Even beauty works this way. If we see a flower as beautiful, we think the beauty is “out there.” Yet without our mind, that beauty would never appear. Emptiness reveals that our world is far more fluid and interdependent than it seems. The Buddha described craving as tanha, which literally means thirst. This isn't just enjoying things; it's clinging to them for happiness or pleasure. He compared it to tasting honey on a razor's edge. The first taste is sweet, but pain follows. That's what happens when we cling to pleasures, possessions, or people: we suffer when they change, disappear, or fall short of our hopes. Craving always promises satisfaction but never delivers. At the root of craving is a misunderstanding. We think things exist solidly and permanently, as if beauty, pleasure, or comfort live inside them. But emptiness shows us this isn't true. When you enjoy a sunset, your mind is part of creating that beauty. When you savor a meal, your mind is shaping the pleasure. But we don't see it this way. We believe the joy is built into the object itself. So we cling, hoping to hold it forever. Once we understand emptiness, craving begins to dissolve. We see the truth: things are impermanent, interdependent, and shaped by the mind. We can still enjoy them, but we don't need to grasp so tightly. The Buddha taught that the end of craving is the end of suffering. When we realize emptiness, ignorance loosens its grip. We don't stop enjoying life! We stop demanding that impermanent things give us permanent happiness. Instead of chasing after more, we can finally enjoy and relax in freedom. References and Links Buddha. The Dhammapada. “The goal of spiritual life is to have a fluid mind, a mind like water, a mind that doesn't cling on to concepts in order to give us a sense of security rooted in the belief that we know something. An awakened mind is a mind that's ever open, receptive and agile, and available for what's new.” —Craig HamiltonWhat does it really mean to let go of the mind? Many of us have heard that the goal of meditation is to discover who we are beyond thought. But this simple phrase can be puzzling. Does it mean stopping thought altogether? Does it mean abandoning critical thinking or reason? In this episode, Craig answers these common questions and explores what happens when we loosen our identification with the mind and step outside the “trance of thought” that keeps us from accessing our deepest wisdom. He also leads a short guided practice to give you a direct taste of this discovery for yourself. To access the full transcript of this episode and discover more resources, visit the episode page on MeditationChangesEverything.com. We've reached the last in our series of episodes this year on Buddhism's six perfections. The final perfection is described as emptiness, wisdom, or insight. These are all ways of naming the indescribable experience of discovering ourselves to be utterly interconnected with all of life, the universe, and everything. My guest for this profound, but sometimes difficult-to-grasp subject is Geshe Sherab. For those unfamiliar with the title Geshe, it refers to those who have completed a 20-year course of study in Tibetan Buddhism, becoming highly qualified teachers and scholars. The Dalai Lama himself is a geshe. In my conversation with Geshe Sherab, he shares how emptiness is not just a philosophical idea, but a practical antidote to anguish, craving, loneliness, and many of life's difficulties. He also shares personal stories—including the loneliness of leaving his culture to share Buddhism with contemporary Westerners like me, and many of you who listen to this podcast.I think you'll enjoy this conversation as much as I did.Episode #202: What is Emptiness? with Geshe SherabFrom August 28 to 31, Scott Snibbe is leading an in-person meditation retreat at Vajrapani Institute. Ajahn Dhammasiha talks about one of the most profound aspects of the Buddha's teaching: Emptiness (Sunyata / Suññatā) On the most profound level, Emptiness means empty of Self, Me, Mine and I. An enlightend person, an arahant, has seen through and abandoned all delusions of I, me, mine and self. The Stream-Enterer (Sotāpanna, first of four stages of Awakening) has abandoned the delusion of Sakkāya-Diṭṭhi (Entity-View), he is empty of any view or doctrine of Self, though he still has thoughts & perceptions of me, mine and I. Emptiness on the most profound level also refers to an Arahant being empty of greed, hate and delusion. However, we can cultivate emptiness already at much more basic levels, for instance: Emptying our calendar - less events is better, more empty is better. Emptying our house, shelf and cupboards - less stuff is better, more empty is better. Emptying our behaviour from unwholesome action and speech - less bad actions makes life much easier and peaceful. Emptying our life from an endless stream of experiences and exitements - less drama is better and more peaceful. Emptying our mind from endless thinking - a mind empty of thought is blissful ...WebsiteOur Spotify PlaylistsNewsletterDhammagiri Youtube ChannelPics#emptiness #sunyata #dhammatalk #dhamma #buddhism #buddhadhamma #buddhistphilosophy
When we hear about spiritual awakening, it can often sound lofty or out of reach. We imagine it will take decades of practice, or that it belongs only to rare, extraordinary people. But what if the very thing we've been seeking has never been absent? In this episode, Craig turns our attention to something we almost always overlook. Every moment of life is filled with thoughts, sensations, and emotions—yet we rarely notice the conscious awareness in which they all arise. What happens when that awareness begins to recognize itself? This is the shift at the heart of awakening.Through teaching, guided reflection, and meditation, Craig invites us into this recognition of awakened awareness—and to the deeper mystery it reveals about who we really are.To access the full transcript of this episode and discover more resources, visit the episode page on MeditationChangesEverything.com. Naomi's Return to Bethlehem Naomi returns to Bethlehem after hearing that the famine is over. She had left Bethlehem during the famine, thinking they would fare better elsewhere. She realizes that leaving God was a mistake that cost her dearly. The townspeople recognize her and ask, "Is this Naomi?" Naomi asks them to call her Mara, meaning bitter, instead of Naomi, meaning pleasant and delightful. She feels that the Lord has dealt very bitterly with her. Grace on the Road Back Home Even when one thinks they have lost everything, God sees the choice to return home and helps on the journey. Naomi says she "went out full, but he hath brought me back again empty." There is grace on the road back to full. Many people feel they have gone too far from God to ever feel His presence again. When one chooses to head back toward God, He helps along the way. God was helping Naomi even before she left Moab. The very day she decided to return home, God began blessing her again. Help on the Journey Naomi decides to return home and tells her daughters-in-law to go back to their families. Orpah returns, but Ruth refuses to leave Naomi. God gave Naomi a helper in Ruth, who loved her more than seven sons. Naomi didn't realize that Ruth would be instrumental in bringing her back to fullness. Everyone needs help, and God provides it. God put "stick to it" in Ruth, who was determined to stay with Naomi. God's Orchestration Naomi is an elderly woman, beaten down by the loss of her husband and sons. She only has Ruth, a Moabite widow, with her. No upstanding Jewish man would consider marrying a Moabite. God moves for those who decide to return to fullness. Even if one feels half full, God wants them completely full of Him. While the choice to return is personal, it is God who ultimately brings one home. There is a drawing in the heart to return to God. The Holy Ghost never stops prompting one to return home. God doesn't forsake His own and brings them back. Even if one arrives empty, God is already helping and working in their path. Naomi acknowledges that God brought her back. Emptiness and Filling Sometimes God has to empty things in order to fill them again. Like emptying water from a fuel tank before adding good octane. God removes what isn't supposed to be there to prepare for filling. Naomi couldn't see that Ruth was the best helper she could have. The journey from Moab to Bethlehem is treacherous, about 50-60 miles, taking 7-10 days. Ruth and Naomi had to choose every day to continue the journey. God helps when one heads back home. God had to empty Naomi to fill her up for His glory. The Road to Fullness The journey back to fullness is orchestrated by God. Naomi was still a landowner but had no husband or sons, so she had to sell. As a backslider, one never forgets the day they gained ownership of something from God. Ruth goes to glean in the fields and happens to end up in Boaz's field. There are no coincidences when trying to get back to fullness. God orchestrates the needs for one to be full. Boaz arrives and notices Ruth. He has heard of her kindness to Naomi and her commitment to the Jehovah God. He tells her to stay in his field and eat and drink with his maids. Ruth asks why Boaz has shown her such grace. When one is on the way back to fullness, they have someone helping them. Boaz instructs his workers to let Ruth glean as much as she wants and to drop extra for her. God wants one to be full again. Heavenly Help Ruth returns with a sack full of grain. She also brings Naomi food from Boaz's table. Naomi asks about the man whose field she was in. When she hears the name Boaz, hope is rekindled in her soul. Hearing the name of Jesus restores hope.
From Scarcity to Radical Abundance: Guide to Living Fully What if your early life experiences—and even the beliefs of your parents and grandparents—were quietly shaping your relationship with time and money? Dr. Sharon Spano has spent decades helping high-impact leaders uncover those hidden influences and rewrite the patterns that hold them back. With a PhD in Human and Organizational Systems, Sharon blends science, personal growth tools, and deep human insight to guide CEOs, entrepreneurs, and consultants toward sustainable success and radical fulfillment. In this episode of Richer Soul, Sharon reveals why so many high achievers end up with financial success but still feel empty—and how to break free from scarcity thinking to create a life where time and money work together in harmony. Key Insights: Your Money Story Starts Early. Childhood experiences and family beliefs—spoken or unspoken—often define how you view earning, spending, and saving for decades. Scarcity vs. Abundance Is a Spectrum. It's not all-or-nothing. Moderate scarcity and moderate abundance both exist, but the difference is whether decisions are driven by fear or by creativity and possibility. The 12 Stages of Human Development Shape Success. Your stage of development affects whether you chase time and money or use them to serve a bigger purpose. The Emptiness of Success Is Real. Many leaders reach their goals and still feel unfulfilled—often because they've ignored deeper needs for connection, meaning, and self-understanding. Generational Patterns Run Deep. Unexamined beliefs from parents and grandparents can quietly influence your financial decisions and your definition of “enough.” Radical Abundance Means Contentment in Any Season. It's about being fully present and fulfilled—whether you have more money, more time, less of both, or somewhere in between. Time and Money Decisions Affect Relationships. The way you use these two resources sends powerful messages to your children, partners, and teams—whether you realize it or not. Money Learnings: Sharon Spano grew up surrounded by scarcity messages about money. Cultural and religious teachings reinforced the belief that wealth was connected to greed, while her family's mixed attitudes left her with a conflicted view of success. Over time, her marriage created balance—her natural frugality and worry met her husband's abundance mindset and faith that resources could be created when needed. Raising a disabled son further deepened her understanding of financial responsibility, planning, and the uncertainty that life brings. Through her work, Sharon discovered that many people struggle with an imbalance of time and money—some have one but not the other. She also emphasizes that our money habits are often generational, passed down unconsciously from parents and grandparents. Ultimately, she teaches that true abundance isn't about accumulation, but about contentment, purpose, and alignment with what matters most. Key Discussion Points: How early life experiences shape money habits. Scarcity vs. abundance—and the hidden “middle ground.” The 12 stages of human development and their impact on time and money. Why high achievers often feel the “emptiness of success.” Breaking inherited money patterns and creating new beliefs. The idea of radical abundance: fulfillment regardless of circumstance. How time and money choices affect children and relationships. Healing systemic patterns through constellation work. Success only matters if it blesses others. About Dr. Sharon Spano: Dr. Sharon Spano helps high-impact leaders break through what's holding them back to become better leaders—for themselves, their families, and their businesses. With a PhD in Human and Organizational Systems, Sharon combines science and personal development tools to help CEOs, consultants, and entrepreneurs achieve sustainable growth and radical fulfillment. Sharon specializes in addressing the “emptiness of success” often experienced by high achievers. These leaders may turn to masterminds, therapy, or courses, yet still feel stuck. Through her transformational work, Sharon guides them to uncover hidden barriers, including generational trauma, so that they can step into their full potential. She is the host of The Other Side of Potential, a podcast exploring the intersection of leadership, success, and personal growth. Sharon is also the author of The Pursuit of Time & Money. Her mission is to inspire leaders to move beyond pressure-driven success to a life of true abundance. What if the emotions of the empty nest aren't as simple as just sadness? In this episode, I open up about the real layers we experience as moms parenting teens and launching them into their next chapter. The truth is, letting go is complicated. You may feel proud and relieved one moment, then lonely or lost the next. These emotions don't come in neat little boxes—they overlap, collide, and leave us questioning who we are now that motherhood looks different . I share how this stage of motherhood isn't just about our kids leaving, it's about our own mindset and the stories we tell ourselves. Many of us try to fix these uncomfortable feelings by keeping busy, overthinking, or relying on our teens for reassurance. But real peace and purpose don't come from trying to control or avoid our emotions—they come from learning how to navigate them with curiosity and compassion . If you've ever caught yourself overthinking, struggling to set boundaries, or wondering what your purpose is beyond motherhood, this conversation will resonate. I'll help you see why it's natural to feel anxious and uncertain right now, and how life coaching tools can help you reduce anxiety, stop overthinking, and begin creating connection, purpose, and direction in this next chapter . I believe this season of motherhood doesn't have to feel like a void. It can be a chance to rediscover yourself, strengthen your relationships, and redefine what letting go really means. Listen in—I think you'll find hope, clarity, and a reminder that you're not alone.
The episode offers an in-depth conversation between Stefan and a 23-year-old caller struggling with feelings of emptiness post-conversion to Catholicism. The discussion reveals the caller's affluent but isolating upbringing, marked by the early death of his mother and the pressures to excel academically in music. The pandemic exacerbated his challenges, leading to a breakdown and withdrawal from music school. The conversation explores his anxiety, social awkwardness, particularly in romantic contexts, and his complex family dynamics, where differing ideological views have further isolated him. Stefan encourages the caller to reframe his perceptions of relationships and mental health, promoting social engagement as a means to combat isolation. The episode underscores the interplay between personal history, mental health, and the necessity of community and connections in overcoming feelings of purposelessness.FOLLOW ME ON X! https://x.com/StefanMolyneuxGET MY NEW BOOK 'PEACEFUL PARENTING', THE INTERACTIVE PEACEFUL PARENTING AI, AND THE FULL AUDIOBOOK!https://peacefulparenting.com/Join the PREMIUM philosophy community on the web for free!Subscribers get 12 HOURS on the "Truth About the French Revolution," multiple interactive multi-lingual philosophy AIs trained on thousands of hours of my material - as well as AIs for Real-Time Relationships, Bitcoin, Peaceful Parenting, and Call-In Shows! You also receive private livestreams, HUNDREDS of exclusive premium shows, early release podcasts, the 22 Part History of Philosophers series and much more!See you soon!https://freedomain.locals.com/support/promo/UPB2025

Many of us come to meditation with subtle expectations—hoping for stillness, clarity, or a familiar sense of calm. When our experience doesn't match those hopes, we often assume something is missing or that we're doing it wrong. In this episode, Craig offers a meditative exploration of what it means to meet the moment as it is. Rather than trying to fix or improve our experience, he invites us to try on a simple but radical stance: to relate to the moment as already whole and complete.Through guided practice, you're invited to investigate what unfolds when you stop resisting your present-moment experience and begin to rest in the possibility that nothing needs to change. To access the full transcript of this episode and discover more resources, visit the episode page on MeditationChangesEverything.com. The Emptiness of KnowledgePreacher: Rev. Jeff SimpsonDate: 3rd August 2025Passage: Ecclesiastes 1:12-18
This week we're returning to Shelve Wood in Shropshire to witness another hour from the unaccompanied overnight capture we made in June. This section of time includes the effects of a strong weather front. It sweeps over the dense woodland, creating rich spatial waves of naturally occurring white, brown and grey noise. Because the Lento box spent the whole night alone immersed within the forest, recording in high definition binaural sound, by listening back with headphones or Airpods we're able to aurally locate ourselves within Shelve Wood itself. Become aural witnesses. Hearing as if we are there, how time passed, surrounded by the trees. the sense of space. How each tree responds in its own unique way to the wind. And the rain drops, that find their way all the way down through the thick firs, to land on the forest floor. * This section of time is from the early hours of the morning. The fir tree that held the Lento box was impressively tall. The Lento box captures the acoustical space of the forest facing outwards from the trunk, five feet (human height) above the ground. It's a vast reverberant zone that apart from the tree trunks, is essentially an empty space between the soft cushion of the forest floor and the ceiling of dense fir needles twenty feet above. In this zone the natural noises of the forest travel over long distances.

When George W. Bush created the PEPFAR program in 2003, it was celebrated by evangelical leaders and has saved more than 26 million lives in Africa from HIV/AIDS. So why weren't evangelicals outraged when Donald Trump killed PEPFAR, which has already resulted in over 75,000 deaths since January? Phil, Skye, and Kaitlyn unpack the arguments for and against PEPFAR, and how evangelical support for “small government” only applies to some programs. Then, Katilyn talks to Sharon Hodde Miller about what the self-esteem movement gets wrong about insecurity, and how we can recover the Christian virtue of service and self-forgetfulness.
