When we hear the word "emptiness" (shunyata) in Buddhist philosophy, it's easy to mistake it for nothingness or a bleak void. But true emptiness isn't an absence of life: it is the absence of separation. It means nothing exists independently. Everything is interconnected. Everything depends on causes and conditions. One of the causes of how things exist is how we perceive them! So, how do we move this beautiful concept from our heads into our hearts? Through the daily practice of gratitude. The Mind as a Creator When we practice gratitude, we vividly see that things don't have a fixed, unchangeable "nature" out there on their own. Instead, their reality changes based on the lens we use to look at them. A dead-stop traffic jam can be a miserable prison, or it can be a rare, quiet moment to listen to a favorite podcast and breathe. The traffic itself hasn't changed, but your mind's perception has. Gratitude proves that our experiences are "empty" of independent existence. They are actively shaped by our own awareness. The Practice: A 7-Day Mindset Shift To deeply experience this wisdom, try this daily reflection: Every morning this week, write down one thing you are grateful for. Challenge yourself to make it completely different every single day. Transforming the Difficult: If there is an area of your life that feels heavy or frustrating, contemplate what there is to be grateful for within that very challenge. For example, you might deeply dislike your current job, but you aren't ready to quit just yet. If the job were inherently bad, it would be bad from every single angle. But when you look closer, you might contemplate how fortunate you are to have an income. You might think about a specific co-worker you enjoy, or feel grateful for the unique skills you've gained there. By finding gratitude in the difficult, you prove to yourself that the situation isn't a fixed, solid block of "misery." Its existence depends entirely on how your mind interacts with it. That is the lived experience of emptiness, and realizing that your mind holds the power to reshape your reality is where your true freedom lies. In this reflection, we revisit a recording from May 31, 2020 with the late Pono Sam as he shares his thoughts on haʻahaʻa, the practice of becoming empty, humble, and open. Through reflections on mindfulness and listening, he reminds us that some of our greatest insights can emerge if we create space for them through presence. Welcome to the Above the Sides podcast! Join us on our journey to uncover what it means to think, act, and live aloha. The inspiration for this podcast is the late Pono Shim, former President and CEO of the Oʻahu Economic Development Board. His stories capture the essence of what it means to live aloha. He made it known that aloha is a lifestyle. It is not a solution to problems, a marketing brand or to be used as an advantage over anyone else. Aloha is to be honored and practiced. The name of this podcast is in reverence of Hawaiʻi's Queen Liliʻuokalani, who wrote: "To gain the kingdom of heaven is to hear what is not said, to see what cannot be seen, and to know the unknowable – that is Aloha. All things in this world are two; in heaven there is but One.” Through these episodes, we seek to find that singular perspective, the one that is "above the sides" as we strive for universal peace. We welcome you to pause with us as we share the stories and voices of Hawai'i business leaders, educators and community members who have chosen to be lifelong students of aloha. Grounding her work in a simple but powerful belief, that happy, aligned people do better work and live better lives, Jackie brings both the science and the human heart to one of the most pressing challenges facing workplaces today.Jackie brings a rare blend of behavioral expertise and people leadership into the world of HR and organizational performance. Together, Nick and Jackie explore why so many employees, despite better tools, more flexibility, and greater leadership investment than ever before, still feel a deep sense of emptiness at work, and what leaders can actually do about it.This conversation unpacks what it truly means to align people with their work from the inside out. Nick and Jackie discuss why engagement and meaning are not the same thing, how the four behavioral drives of dominance, extraversion, patience, and formality determine what energizes or drains each employee, and why the same task can be deeply motivating for one person and completely demotivating for another. They explore how hiring for speed quietly erodes culture, why interpersonal conflicts at work are almost always behavioral mismatches rather than personality clashes, and how leaders can use the three whys technique to reconnect people to organizational purpose. They also cover the four forces of engagement, the role of pulse surveys in detecting disengagement early, and how AI adoption is creating a new wave of workforce fear that behavioral science is uniquely equipped to address. The discussion highlights PI's J-curve framework for navigating change, why transparency around AI matters more than most leaders realize, and how understanding what drives each individual is the foundation of a truly high-performing team.In a world shaped by remote work, rapid AI adoption, and growing disconnection, this episode examines why behavioral science may be the most practical and powerful tool HR and L&D professionals have in 2026 to restore meaning, motivation, and performance across their organizations.A must-listen for HR leaders, L&D professionals, and anyone ready to stop guessing what their people need and start building workplaces where people are genuinely wired to thrive.Enjoyed this? There's something many of us long for on the spiritual path—the ability to live with a more open heart. To care more deeply. To give more freely. To love without limits. As spiritual practitioners, we often try to sense into the heart and feel divine or unconditional love, assuming that the more we feel it, the more we'll be able to express it.But what if love doesn't actually work that way? What if love isn't something we can possess at all?In this episode, Craig invites us to explore the possibility that the spiritual path is not ultimately about trying to create more love, but about learning how to get out of the way so that love can move through us more freely.Through guided meditation and reflection, Craig explores what it means to open ourselves to a deeper intelligence and care that may already exist within us.When we approach practice in this way, we begin to discover a love that is much deeper than emotion or attachment. Ultimately, we find that love is the deepest nature of awakened consciousness itself. To access the full transcript of this episode and discover more resources, visit the episode page on MeditationChangesEverything.com. Dr. Mark Ettensohn examines the experience of emptiness in narcissistic personality disorder and other forms of personality pathology. Rather than approaching personality disorders as collections of traits or behaviors, the episode frames them as disturbances in identity. Dr. Ettensohn outlines how the sense of self is constructed through early relational experience and how disruptions in that process can lead to unstable, fragmented, or underdeveloped self-experience. The discussion focuses on the role of dissociation and splitting in shaping identity, and how different self-states may become organized around incompatible relational experiences. In this context, emptiness is not simply a feeling, but reflects aspects of the self that were never fully recognized, mirrored, or integrated in development. Dr. Ettensohn also addresses a common misunderstanding in public discourse, where narcissism is equated with observable traits such as arrogance or entitlement. He explains why these descriptions capture only one part of a broader system involving both grandiose and vulnerable states, and how focusing solely on behavior obscures the underlying psychological structure. The episode concludes with a discussion of clinical implications, emphasizing why treatments that focus only on behavior often fall short, and why effective work with narcissistic pathology requires attention to identity, relational process, and the integration of dissociated aspects of self-experience. This teaching was given by Lama Zopa Rinpoche at Lama Tsonkhapa Institute in Italy as part of the Ganden Lha Gyama retreat between September 3-30, 2004.00:00:01 The mind is obscured by many superstitious thoughts, like attachment, anger, and self-cherishing, which are based on grasping at an exaggerated object.00:06:47 While everything is empty of true existence, the ignorance projects true existence onto phenomena, like wearing colored glasses that make everything appear a certain color. We then allow our mind to believe this hallucination is real.00:14:52 Realizing emptiness helps generate strong compassion for sentient beings, seeing how they are suffering due to being ignorant of the way things actually exist. Their suffering comes from wrong concepts and mistaken ways of thinking.00:22:24 Realizing emptiness doesn't contradict bodhicitta, but rather makes one generate stronger bodhicitta. The positive thoughts like compassion and bodhicitta are not caused by or based on the ignorance grasping at true existence.00:26:20 Reciting Calling the Guru from Afar. The way to clean away the superstitious thoughts is through guru devotion - making requests to the guru from one's heart. One should strive to devote to the guru with the nine attitudes, such as viewing the guru as a buddha, following the guru's advice, and seeing the guru's actions as perfect and so on.00:36:30 Lama Zopa Rinpoche leads the recitation of Lama Tsongkhapa Guru Yoga, offering of a short mandala, and recitation of Migtsema mantras.00:51:35 The group recites the Lamrim prayer from Lama Chopa.00:59:05 The group recites the Eight Verses of Thought Transformation and other prayers from Lama Chopa.1:23:32 Lama Zopa Rinpoche leads the protector prayers and dedications.02:08:55 Lama Zopa Rinpoche tells about Geshe Lama Konchog's Life. Ep. 233 | In the last episode of the Path of Love Series with A. H. Almaas, Hameed explores the themes he introduced in the later chapters of his new book, The Inner Beloved. Hameed clarifies the role of mind on the path of heart (the mind is bedazzled and awed; the heart open), and details what happens when we reach the beloved, like “falling in love with everything” and experiencing the absolute as a “coming home” (even though there's no one there!). We learn that, on the path of love, no matter what we do or don't do, a heart-driven force beyond the mind is pulling us onward. Once we arrive, we realize the beloved has always been there—which is why our heart has been longing for the beloved all along.Hameed explains that on the path of love, nonduality becomes intimacy—reality itself is pure intimacy, he says—and in fact, the nonbeingness of the beloved is the ultimate truth of reality. In a state of mystical poverty, we discover that all we are and have ever been has been borrowed from the beloved. The culmination of this Path of Love Series ends very beautifully, the love and intimacy of the beloved pervading Hameed's words and the images he conjures for us. “The world is simply the luminosity of the beloved,” Hameed says. In listening to him, we share in some of the wonderful sense of coming home he experienced, a little of the radiant luminosity, too, and his own ongoing excitement over the ever unfolding mystery of the divine. Recorded April 9, 2026.“We can be in the lap of the beloved and still enjoy life—loving everything from that place.”Topics & Time StampsIntroducing the 4th dialogue in the Path of Love Series with A. H. Almaas, focusing on the role of mind and the culmination of the path (00:49)On the path of love you are heart-driven by forces that mind cannot fathom (01:39)Hameed's experience of falling in love with everything and experiencing the absolute as if “coming home” (03:00)The mind is bedazzled by the Mystery and recognizes its limitation in relation to the heart (08:20)When you get there, you realize the beloved has always been there (11:46)Emptiness beyond normal emptiness: Hameed calls this “absence” (13:05)The great liberation: where there's nothing more to dissolve (17:18)As we are pulled, the love deepens & intensifies; we drown in the passion (22:06)Mystical poverty: the soul recognizes all of its qualities are borrowed from the beloved (25:05)What is right relationship between the realized heart and a healthy mind? (25:51)Krishnamurti would talk about no mind—but he was always using mind (28:40)Cutting through illusion & Hameed's transmission from Manjushri (30:29)True mind: knowing in the moment (38:43)Dissolving dichotomies into wholeness: the world is simply the luminosity of the beloved (43:31)The ultimate truth of reality: the nonbeingness of the beloved (50:21)When tantra is enhanced by real love, then you can dissolve into the vastness (53:30)Stabilizing the realization is the second stage, actualizing the realization and not going back to the “doer” is the third stage (58:51)The dissolution of self doesn't necessarily last: humility is an important step towards making the realization more constant (01:00:46) Nonbeing is the essence of intimacy: being completely one with the inner beloved (01:03:43)On the path of love, nonduality becomes intimacy; reality itself is pure intimacy (01:06:22)For fans of the A. Ecclesiastes 5:8–6:12 - exposes the emptiness of trusting in government, money, possessions, or achievement to give lasting meaning. Solomon shows that wealth and success often increase anxiety rather than peace, and a life spent chasing more can still leave the soul unsatisfied. Even under God's sovereignty, human choices still matter, and people remain responsible for how they live and what they pursue. Instead of building life around endless striving, Solomon points toward a quieter rhythm of flourishing: enjoy meals with others, work faithfully, accept your limits, and practice gratitude. True joy is found not in prestige or accumulation, but in receiving everyday life as a gift from God, marked by contentment, meaningful work, shared community, and thankfulness toward the Giver of every good thing.

In this dispatch from the front lines, Jesse and Justin record from a new "zen" living room setup to equip the saints for cultural engagement. This episode tackles three major cultural skirmishes where Christians must hold the line and uphold a clear biblical standard: The Church as a Family: The brothers draw their swords against a progressive article arguing that the church should stop using "family" language. They remind listeners that from our adoption as sons to the church as the Bride of Christ, Scripture breathes the reality of family into the church. We cannot abandon biblical language and conform to culture just because society has broken the family. The Emptiness of City Living: Responding to a viral social media post mocking suburban life, the hosts expose the spiritual emptiness and anti-family foundation of modern city living. They contrast the fleeting fulfillment of weekend bar-hopping with the eternal value of building a grounded, lasting biblical legacy with your family. Biological Reality at Smith College: Finally, they discuss the Department of Education's Title IX investigation into Smith College—a historic women's college—for admitting biological men into women-only spaces. The hosts highlight this as a refreshing return to the reality of only two biological sexes, while also warning listeners against aligning with extreme political echo chambers that lack a true biblical foundation. We end musing on how philosophy without God leaves you endlessly studying but never learning. Know the Word, engage the culture, and stand firm. Grab your shields, take up your swords, and seize the faith. In this compelling fourth lecture of the series, Acharya das reframes well-being through the lens of timeless wisdom, drawing from sources like the Bhagavad Gita to reveal a powerful three-dimensional model: body, mind, and the often-overlooked spiritual self. With precision and clarity, the talk exposes a universal truth—no amount of success, relationships, or material gain can resolve the subtle but persistent sense of emptiness that many experience. This is not a personal failure or circumstantial issue; it is a signal pointing toward something deeper. The Bhagavad- gītā verse quoted in this talk:In this world, there is nothing so sublime and pure as transcendental knowledge. Such knowledge is the mature fruit of all mysticism. And one who has achieved this enjoys the self within himself in due course of time. - Bhagavad-gītā 4.38Such a liberated person is not attracted to material sense pleasure or external objects but is always in trance, enjoying the pleasure within. In this way the self-realized person enjoys unlimited happiness, for he concentrates on the Supreme. - Bhagavad-gītā 5.21One whose happiness is within, who is active within, who rejoices within and is illumined within, is actually the perfect mystic. He is liberated in the Supreme, and ultimately he attains the Supreme. - Bhagavad-gītā 5.24Chapters00:00:00 Introduction and Three-Dimensional Well-being Paradigm ‎ 00:02:22 The Universal Experience of Emptiness and Advertising Manipulation ‎ 00:04:38 Personal Counseling Example: Fear of Being Alone ‎ 00:06:44 Behavioral Patterns of Avoiding Emptiness ‎ 00:08:38 Life Clutter and Hidden Loneliness‎ 00:11:19 Emptiness as Spiritual Protection and Indication ‎ 00:13:18 Material Wealth and Relationship Status Don't Eliminate Emptiness ‎ 00:15:01 The Inadequacy of the Material World ‎ 00:16:37 A Woman's Honest Blog About Emptiness ‎ 00:23:47 Attraction to Beauty, Happiness, and Love ‎ 00:27:00 The Ice Cream Sundae Metaphor ‎ 00:28:52 Spiritual Malnourishment and the Fish Out of Water Metaphor ‎ 00:30:31 The Inward Journey and Purpose of Human Life ‎ 00:33:07 Bhagavad Gita Verses on Transcendental Knowledge ‎ 00:35:56 Liberation Through Spiritual Understanding ‎ 00:37:59 The Self-Realized Person's Experience ‎ 00:39:30 The Perfect Mystic and Spiritual Attainment ‎ 00:41:08 Two Simple Practices: Yoga Wisdom and Meditation ‎ 00:42:16 Spiritual Sound and Its Purifying Effects ‎ 00:44:15 The Signal of Inner Longing ‎ 00:45:41 The Futility of Material Investment ‎ 00:46:55 Invitation to Kirtan Practice ‎

Sometimes it refers to the absence of something; we open a box, and there is nothing in it. Sometimes it's a feeling; something or someone important seems to be missing from our lives. Sometimes it's a verb, the act of removing content and leaving an openness; we empty the trash. Physicists tell us that nature abhors a vacuum, and how we fill that emptiness really matters. In this sermon, we're going to start thinking about emptiness. It's something many authors and social scientists think too many of us are experiencing these days. When was the last time you felt truly bored? And when was the last time your life felt genuinely meaningful? For Harvard social scientist Arthur Brooks, those two questions are more connected than you might think. This week on Hello Monday, Jessi Hempel sits down with Arthur Brooks — professor at Harvard Business School, bestselling author, and one of the most compelling thinkers on happiness and purpose — to dig into his new book, The Meaning of Your Life: Finding Purpose in an Age of Emptiness.  In this episode, Jessi and Arthur discuss: Why so many high-achievers feel empty even when everything is going right How our devices are literally pushing us into the wrong hemisphere of the brain, and why eliminating boredom may have accidentally eliminated meaning The psychology of strivers: why so many driven, successful people are secretly running on a fear that idleness means they'll stop being loved The "arrival fallacy": why reaching your goals so often feels like a letdown, and what that tells you about whether you were chasing the right things The four types of career paths, and why "spiral" careers — built from a series of reinventions — may be the most fulfilling model for this moment How to retrofit a sense of calling into the job you already have Arthur's gut-check formula for evaluating any career opportunity: 80% excitement, 20% fear, 0% deadness Why suffering and meaning share the same part of the brain — and why trying to avoid all pain may be the very thing standing between you and a purposeful life This episode is for anyone who has achieved what they set out to achieve and still found themselves wondering, "Is this it?" — and for anyone still figuring out what they're actually working toward. This conversation was recorded live. If you're a premium member, you can watch the extended version, featuring lots more audience questions, here. Follow Arthur Brooks and Jessi Hempel on LinkedIn.

Click here to find Tyler's new generative book, The Marginal Revolution: Rise and Decline, and the Pending AI Revolution! Arthur Brooks reckons he's on the fourth leg of a spiral-shaped career: French horn player, economist, president of the American Enterprise Institute, and now Harvard professor and evangelist for the science of happiness. His new book, The Meaning of Your Life: Finding Purpose in an Age of Emptiness, argues that happiness isn't a feeling but a combination of enjoyment, satisfaction, and meaning — the macronutrients of happiness, he calls them — and that most of us are gorging on the wrong ones. Tyler, naturally, wants to know: what's the marginal value of a book on happiness, and what does spiral number five look like? Along the way, Tyler and Arthur cover how scarcity makes savoring possible and why knowing you'll die young sharpens the mind, what twin studies tell us about the genetics of well-being and why that's not actually depressing, the four habits of the genuinely happy, the placebo theory of happiness books, curiosity as an evolved positive emotion, the optimal degree of self-deception, why Arthur chose Catholicism rather than Orthodoxy, what the research says about accepting death, how he became an economist via correspondence school, AI's effect on think tanks, the future of classical music, whether Trumpism or Reaganism is the equilibrium state of American conservatism, whether his views on immigration have changed, what he and Oprah actually agree on, which president from his lifetime he most admires, Barcelona versus Madrid, what 60-year-olds are especially good at, why he's reading Josef Pieper, how he'll face death, and much more.
