In this presentation delivered at the "Metaphysics and the Matter with Things: Thinking with Iain McGilchrist" conference—a collaborative event by the Center for Process Studies (CPS) and the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) in March 2024—John Vervaeke explores the concept of "mattering" and its critical role in understanding the meaning of life. He contrasts "meaning in life" with the broader "meaning of life," emphasizing the importance of connectedness and belonging over mere purpose. Vervaeke draws on research to introduce "religio," a deep sense of connectedness that underpins our existence, and critiques materialism for overlooking the relational aspects of human life. Through cognitive science, biology, and philosophy, Vervaeke demonstrates how our intelligence and problem-solving abilities are deeply intertwined with our capacity to find what truly matters. — Metaphysics and the Matter with Things: Thinking with Iain McGilchrist was a collaborative conference put on by the Center for Process Studies (CPS) and the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) in March of 2024. In this episode of the Dethroning Your Inner Critic Podcast, Joanna Kleinman challenges the idea that confidence is just about external achievements and proposes a deeper, more universal truth: everyone experiences self-doubt and insecurity, but true confidence arises from connecting with your authentic self, free from the ego's limitations. The host argues that our automatic mind, the "IC," creates false identities and attachments that hinder us. Letting go of these and connecting with our "Authentic Self" (AS) fosters natural confidence. True purpose, instead of being something you need to figure out, emerges from aligning with the flow of the universe and bringing consciousness into the world through your own actions. Reflection Questions: How does your "IC" manifest in your life? What are some triggers for your self-doubt? How can you connect more deeply with your "AS"? What practices or activities help you feel authentic? What does "bringing consciousness into the world" mean to you? How can you contribute your unique light? To the extent that they're able to break us down, they're even more able to build us back up and bring us to healing.Longing for relationships is natural and normal. While loneliness can be so frightening, it does not need to be stigmatized. But it does need to be worked through.Often healing comes through the very wounds we're hurting with. In this episode of “Voices with Vervaeke,” John Vervaeke and Guy Sengstock engage in a discussion about relationality, grief, and the sacred. Highlighting their upcoming Circling into Dialogos workshop, they delve into practices for realizing our interconnected nature, inspired by philosopher James Filler's views on relationality as the essence of being. The duo explores how grief exposes our lives as interwoven relational worlds, leading to a deeper comprehension of non-substantiality and connection. Their transformative workshop aims to cultivate better relationships with self, others, and ultimate reality, addressing the sacred amidst the meaning crisis and moving beyond adversarial thinking. This relational perspective, both transcendent and intimate, offers insights into a more responsive and holistic way of living. Listeners will gain an enriched understanding of how relational thinking can reshape our approach to life's challenges, opening doors to new meanings and deeper connections. Guy Sengstock, the founder of the Circling method, is a renowned facilitator and innovator in the field of authentic communication and personal development. His method blends philosophical rigor with a deep understanding of relational dynamics, offering transformative experiences that foster genuine connection and self-awareness. Glossary of Terms Relationality: The quality of being relational, emphasizing the importance of relationships in understanding beings and the world. Heidegger: A German philosopher known for his existential and phenomenological explorations. Neoplatonism: A philosophical system that posits the existence of an ultimate reality or "One" from which everything emanates. Aside from sleep, work is where we spend most of our waking hours over our lifetime. How we experience work is how we experience a considerable amount of our lives, which is why managing the meaning we derive from work is essential to our overall life satisfaction. Knowing how your workplace works is how we can begin to make it work for everyone. Most of us want more meaning at work and badly. A 2018 study by BetterUp surveyed 2285 American professionals and found that 9 out of 10 employees, regardless of their job level, tasks or salary, are willing to trade a percentage of their lifetime earnings for greater meaning at work. Moreover, participants were willing to forego 23% of their total future earnings (almost as much as people spend on housing) to have a job that gave them meaning! On this weeks episode I am interviewing my friend and New York Times bestselling author Eve Rodsky on how we can find greater meaning in life and work.
