"The cover is the playground for design..." Ariane Spanier is the designer of Fukt, the magazine for contemporary drawing. She makes it it along with her partner Björn Hegardt, and it has become renowned for its fantastically creative, fun-loving covers. Their current issue won Cover of the Year at the Stack Awards last week, and Ariane dropped in at the office the day after the ceremony to speak about the process she went through in creating an eye-catching concept that embodies their take on the theme of systems. In this conversation she explains why she’s attracted to such a playful design style, why she thinks it works so well for the cover of this magazine, and how this long-running title has changed over the 20 years it has been published.

Jeremy Leslie and Liv Siddall talk magazines, recorded at the magCulture in London with a dash to Manhattan for some chat from our NY visit. The episode opens with a look back at how The Sunday Times Magazine reported the Apollo 11 moon landings, 50 years ago. Jeremy and Liv discuss this years Stack Awards, which have just been launchec, and then flick through new issues of Club Sandwich, C 41 and student magazine Garment from Amsterdam. We then switch to New York to listen in on part our MagMagMag event at Vitsoe; editors Alison Lewis (American Chordata) and Felix Burrichter(Pin-Up)discuss business and creative issues with Jeremy. "My degree suffered a little..." Arne Meyer was one of the editors and art directors on the current issue of Brasilia, the magazine made by students at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Hanover. They won Student Magazine of the Year at the Stack Awards, so Arne dropped in at the Stack office the morning after the ceremony to speak about the making of the magazine, and the challenge of keeping quality high when the team has to change each year.

"Magazines tell the story of what's going on right now." Bobbie Johnson is the editor of Anxy, the California-based magazine that aims to break down the stigma around mental health. Anxy won Art Director of the Year and Best Use of Illustration at this year's Stack Awards, so the day after the ceremony Bobbie came over to the Stack office to talk about their evolving mission, and why a group of people based in Silicon Valley use a print magazine to communicate their ideas.

A spirit of celebration pervades proceedings this week, from a good news(print) story in Vienna, to two titles lauded for their excellence at this past week’s Stack Awards for independent publishing.

"I think we needed this period of very beautiful and luxurious magazines to prove that print was of worth... but now we're moving on." Ruth Jamieson is the author of Print is Dead Long Live Print and Angharad Lewis is the author of So You Want to Publish a Magazine, and together they judged the Student Magazine of the Year category in this year's Stack Awards. They came over to Somerset House for the judging session this week, and after we'd picked our winner, we sat down for a wider conversation about the current state of independent magazine publishing.

The Stack Awards opened for entries this week, and Kirsten Algera and Ernst van der Hoeven flew into London to join us for our launch event, which brought together some of the winners from last year. They're the creators of MacGuffin magazine, our Magazine of the Year for 2016, and I met them at their hotel the morning after the event to find out more about what it meant for them to win the award, and what they have planned for the rest of this year. This is our last episode of the podcast for the summer, but we'll be back in September with more conversations with independent magazine makers.
