pWotD Episode 2945: Mission: Impossible (film series) Welcome to Popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 207,672 views on Sunday, 25 May 2025 our article of the day is Mission: Impossible (film series).Mission: Impossible is an American series of action spy films, based on the 1966 TV series created by Bruce Geller. The series is mainly produced by Tom Cruise, who plays Ethan Hunt, an agent of the Impossible Mission Force (IMF). The films have been directed, written, and scored by various filmmakers and crew, while incorporating musical themes from the original series by Lalo Schifrin.Starting in 1996, it follows the missions of the IMF's main field team, under Hunt's leadership, to stop an enemy force and prevent an impending global disaster. The series focuses on Hunt's character, and like the television series' structure, is complemented by an ensemble cast, such as Luther Stickell (played by Ving Rhames) and Benji Dunn (played by Simon Pegg), who have recurring roles. The series has experienced a generally positive reception from critics and audience. It is the 17th-highest-grossing film series of all time, earning over $4.35 billion worldwide, and is often cited as one of the best action franchises to date. The sixth film, subtitled Fallout, was released on July 27, 2018 and is currently the series' highest-grossing entry. The seventh film, Dead Reckoning Part One, was released in July 2023, and an eighth and final film, The Final Reckoning, had its theatrical release in late May 2025. The films are co-produced and released by Paramount Pictures. In 2024, the series received its first Academy Award nominations, with Dead Reckoning Part One being nominated in the categories of Best Visual Effects and Best Sound at the 96th ceremony. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 02:03 UTC on Monday, 26 May 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Mission: Impossible (film series) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Ayanda.
On episode 282 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade is joined by AwardsWatch Associate Editor Sophia Ciminello as well as AwardsWatch contributors Dan Bayer, Jay Ledbetter, Josh Parham, and Karen Peterson to go back 10 years and take a look at the 88th Academy Awards, covering the films of 2015. The team take a trip back to just a decade ago where the Oscars were at a moment of reflection as the #OscarsSoWhite movement rang loudly as the nominations didn't fully show the diverse, talented artists that made the year in film so strong. Chris Rock (whose jokes this night would spark the later controversy for “The Slap” at the 2022 ceremony) hosted the ceremony and highlighted perfectly that the Academy had a long way to go to show the world that they can change and allow everyone the chance to be nominated and win an Oscar. For the telecast, it was a night dominated by Mad Max: Fury Road and The Revenant in the technical categories, Leonardo DiCaprio finally winning an Oscar, a cool, shocking upset in Best Visual Effects, and Spotlight winning the top prize, along with just Best Original Screenplay, making it the first film since The Greatest Show On Earth to win Best Picture while only winning one other award. In their in-depth discussion, the AW team talked about the film year of 1980, briefly discuss talk about Spotlight as a Best Picture winner, do an extensive conversation over the below the line categories and nominees for the year, and then the new version of the AW Shoulda Woulda Coulda game, where instead of individual replacements, they must decide as a group who the nominees and winners should be in the top eight categories. The rules of the game state they can only replace two of the nominees that year from each category, except in Best Picture, where the group could replace up to four films to make up the final set of eight nominated films. Like past retrospective episodes, it was a fascinating, fun conversation including spirited debates, alliances, vote swinging, celebrating various movies, performances that aren't normally talked about and more that we all hope you enjoy. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 3h14m. We will be back next week for a review of the new A24 drama, Warfare, as well as talk about some of the best war films of the decade/century so far. Till then, let's get into it. "Better Man" had its world premiere at the 2024 Telluride Film Festival, where it received positive reviews for its elaborately staged and choreographed musical sequences from director Michael Gracey ("The Greatest Showman") and the raw honesty with which global pop star Robbie Williams allowed his story to be told (all the while being portrayed on-screen by a CGI monkey). The Oscar-nominated Visual Effects team consisting of Luke Millar, David Clayton, Keith Herft, and Peter Stubbsugh were all kind enough to spend some time speaking with us about their work on the film, which you can listen to below. In space, no one can hear you scream. In sequels that are also prequels that tell standalone stories while respecting the original and tying together diverse material from comics to video games, no one can hear you scream about continuity. Return to the Alien franchise in this 2024 installment directed by Fede Álvarez (who helmed Don't Breathe) and set in-between the first two films. While the outing succeeded at the box office, audiences were divided over the third-act twist and the decision to digitally resurrect the late actor Ian Holm as the film's synthetic, Rook. It just scored an Oscar nom for Best Visual Effects, but what do our hosts make of Alien: Romulus? Are our hearts bursting through our chests with love for this flick, or did it give us indigestion? "Dune: Part Two" was one of 2024's biggest films critically, financially, and now, awards-wise, as it's on a similar run as the first film was in 2021 through early 2022. "Dune" went on to receive 10 Oscar nominations and six wins: Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Production Design, Best Original Score, Best Sound, and Best Visual Effects. The second film impressively ups the scale, delivering one of the grandest big-screen achievements audiences have experienced in their lifetimes, and we're proud to have many members of the crew here to dive back into the sands of Arrakis with us as Oscar voting gets underway for the 97th Academy Awards. First, we have my interview with Academy Award-nominated Director, Co-Writer and Producer Denis Villeneuve, followed by Brendan Hodges's conversation with Academy Award-winning Cinematographer Greig Fraser, then we have Giovanni Lago's interview with Academy Award-winning Costume Designer Jacqueline West, then we have Dan Bayer's interview with Academy Award-winning Production Designer Patrice Vermette and Set Decorator Shane Vieau, followed by my interviews with Academy Award-winning Film Editor Joe Walker, Academy-Award winning sound team consisting of Supervising Sound Editor & Sound Designer Richard King, and Re-Recording Mixers Ron Bartlett and Doug Hemphill, and then we end on my conversation with Academy Award-winning Visual Effects Supervisor Paul Lambert. The Reverend Scott K (The Church of Tarantino podcast) and Elwood Jones (Asian Cinema Film Club podcast) join Flixwatcher to review Scott's choice Godzilla Minus One. Godzilla Minus One (2023) is a Japanese Kaiju film and the 37th in the Godzilla franchise. This Godzilla was written and directed Takashi Yamazaki, and also visual effects that went on to win the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. Becoming the first non-English language film in Academy Awards history to do so. It was the first Godzilla film to be nominated for an Academy Award. Set in post-war Japan, kamikaze pilot Kōichi Shikishima lands his plane onto Odo Island for repairs. Lead mechanic Sōsaku Tachibana suspects that he is actually faking the mechanical issues to avoid his duty. During the night Godzilla attacks the island. Shikishima fails to shoot and is knocked unconscious. He wakes up to find him and Tachibana are the only survivors, and Tachibana is angry he did not attack Godzilla. Shikishima returns home to find his parents dead and is plagued by survivors guilt. Trying to make amends he joins the crew of boat tasked with clearing mines where he encounters Godzilla again. Historically Godzilla films have found their fans but haven't really been a hit outside its loyal fans. Godzilla Minus One however appealed to a much wider audience and its success at the Oscars helped find a new generation of fans. Recommendability scores for Godzilla Minus One were very high, it's runtime of over two hours let it down a little for repeat viewing and it was agreed it needed to be seen at the cinema but it still scores a very respectable 3.75 overall. Legends of Halloween gets in touch with its inner girl with a 1992 “satirical surrealistic black comedy fantasy film” - and yes, that's how Wikipedia categorizes it. Directed by Back to the Future and Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Helmer Robert Zemeckis, this film defied categorization just as hard as its main characters defy the laws of nature. Meryl Steep and Goldie Hawn star as two image-obsessed rivals for the affection of plastic surgeon-turned-cosmetic mortician Bruce Willis, when they both learn that the secret to eternal youth comes with a price. “Now, a warning?!” Featuring what were revolutionary computer-generated effects, which won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, the film went on to become a cult classic, especially in the queer community, and will soon bow on Broadway as a musical. Now, we are become Death, viewers of Death Becomes Her! For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. The one and only Carley Cooper returns to introduce Shawn to Robert Zemeckis' DEATH BECOMES HER. Sandwiched between two of Zemeckis' most-beloved films (Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and Forrest Gump), Death Becomes Her has always been a bit neglected. But the film made major strides for the special effects industry, ultimately winning the Oscar for Best Visual Effects in 1993, and paving the way for CGI to thrive in film's like Jurassic Park. Does the film work beyond its landmark effects? Tune in to find out what Shawn and Carley think!HOSTSShawn EastridgeCarley Cooper
We have to say that the influence of this game has spread all over the world.今天我们就来谈一谈Black Myth: Wukong这款游戏为什么不只是在中国,而是在全球都making waves(掀起了波澜)!01. A Fresh Mythological World 全新的神话体系你敢相信吗?黑神话还没正式发行就已经在多个地区登顶pre-sale charts(预售排行榜)了。这简直是不可思议!So, what makes this game so special?首先就是《黑神话:悟空》给世界带来的全新的游戏世界观,或者说a fresh mythological world(一个全新的神话体系)。Actually, 3A games are typically dominated by major western and Japanese studios (3A游戏常年由西方和日本的一些大型工作室主导).As for China, the main focus of its gaming industry is often on mobile games (手机游戏).其实在此之前,西方的一些3A games的世界观就来自它的神话体系。There are a lot of game canons out there that take cues in (汲取) their world-building (世界构建) from existing mythologies (现存的神话). Hades (《哈迪斯》), God Of War (《战神》), Valheim (《瓦尔海姆》), and Assassin's Creed (《刺客信条》) build around foundations that have existed for centuries.canon /ˈkænən/ 规则,标准说到西方神话体系,就不得不提到:Egyptian Mythology(埃及神话)、Greek Mythology(希腊神话)和 Norse Mythology(北欧神话)了。These are classic Western myths.People are already familiar with these mythic systems, so it's very exciting when players are exposed to (接触到) a new kind of world-building.有一个玩家是这么说的:对于3A游戏界而言,黑神话绝对是满满的异文化冲击,那是一种神秘、有历史感、高壁垒,又让人忍不住去探索的未知领域。It's a mysterious kind of culture shock (神奇的文化冲击).But let's not ignore the fact that this game could be a bit hard to get into for those not familiar with Chinese culture (对那些不了解中国文化的人来说会有些困难).But it is normal that we always have to put in a lot of effort (花很多精力) when learning something new. Just as we have learned about Western culture before by looking up information (查阅信息), learning their language, etc.Now is perhaps the best time for the world to learn about China. It hasn't stopped international players from wanting to dive deeper into (更深入地了解) the story and cultural background. For example, some players learn about the myth by reading Journey to the West and watching the Journey to the West TV series. Erin thinks it actually made the game more intriguing (有趣) since it is so different.02. Hardcore Technology 硬核技术接下来我们从technical aspects(技术方面)聊一聊这部游戏的影响力。Game Science used a cutting-edge (尖端的) tool called Unreal Engine 5 (虚幻引擎5). Unreal Engine 5 is the latest version of Unreal Engine (虚幻引擎的最新版本) developed by Epic Games. From its humble beginnings using Unreal Engine 4 to upgrading (升级) to Unreal Engine 5, the shift is like going from 720p to 4K. 在这种极致的画面下所呈现出来的场景简直太美了!Actually, a lot of the buildings and sculptures (雕塑) in the game are scanned from (扫描自) real life China. The developers traveled around China, scanning actual historical sites (历史遗址) to create aesthetically stunning setting (美轮美奂的场景).No wonder it won the “Best Visual Effects” award (最佳视觉效果奖) at Gamescom 2023 (2023年科隆游戏展). It shows that Black Myth: Wukong is already being recognized on a global stage, not just as a game, but as a serious contender (竞争者) in the world of visual storytelling (视觉叙事).What's really fascinating is how this technology allows players to experience real Chinese environments, from ancient temples (古寺庙) to mystical (神秘的) landscapes. It would be more reasonable and believable. The authenticity (真实性) adds to the storytelling, making it feel more grounded and relatable (更接地气、更贴近生活), especially for Chinese players. One comment said, “When I see the temples and hear the familiar conversations in the game, it feels like I'm home.” While there were many fantastic 3A games before Black Myth: Wukong, non-Western gamers don't have that cultural resonance (文化共鸣). 尤其是游戏中的梗、笑点都是对不上的,特别是在本地化没有那么完善的时候。那么在这种情况下,黑神话的出现让众多中国玩家感觉像是回到了家一样。That emotional connection (情感联系) is powerful, especially for a game based on such an iconic piece of literature (标志性的文学作品) like Journey to the West. Now in China, almost everyone has seen the Journey to the West TV series. And what's funny is that it's not just Chinese players feeling this; international gamers are diving deep into the lore (传说) and even learning about Chinese culture just to appreciate the game more. And a lot of people are starting to watch different versions (不同版本) of the Journey to the West TV series. If you are one of them, Flora recommends the one made in 1986. You may love the character of Wukong after watching it because it is played so well.03. A foreign gamer commented, “This is like Assassin's Creed but with Chinese mythology. The graphics (画面), the story—it's unlike anything I've ever played (不同于以往我玩的任何游戏)!”Black Myth: Wukong is finally giving Chinese gamers a taste of their own mythology (让中国玩家体验到他们自己的神话) in a way that feels just as epic (如史诗一般). It represents a milestone for China's video game industry (中国电子游戏的里程碑).Its success shatters the notion (打破了这种看法) that 3A titles are more likely to be money losers (做3A游戏是赔钱买卖). In addition, it is making the world more aware of China.04. Expectations for China's Game IndustryBlack Myth: Wukong shouldn't just be seen as a vehicle (工具) for exporting Chinese culture. The game's primary goal (主要目标) is to be a fun, well-made game. Cultural export (文化输出) is a bonus (锦上添花), not the endgame (最终目的).我们希望Game Science在“文化输出”“国风”这样的褒奖声中能够不忘初心,继续给世界呈现更多制作精良的内容和文化产品。The “national style” or “cultural export” tags (标签) don't automatically guarantee success (并不能自动保证成功). The quality of the game needs to speak for itself. If a product is genuinely good, it will naturally attract attention and spread globally. That's why there's a lot of responsibility on the developers to keep refining and improving (改进和完善) the game. “国风”“海外”这样的标签不但不会成为“免死金牌”,反而赋予了Game Science更大的责任。如履薄冰、努力深耕,才会给世界呈现出更多足够震撼的中国作品。Black Myth: Wukong is not just a game, but a glimpse into the future of Chinese AAA development (未来中国3A游戏开发的一个缩影) and a gateway to Chinese culture for gamers around the world (全球玩家了解中国文化的窗口). We can't wait to see where this journey goes.See you next time!
Sean Comer, Dorian Price, Mik Wanamaker and Mark Radulich review movies currently on streaming services and in theaters: Clockwork Orange/Lolita/Eyes Wide Shut Movie Review! First up is A Clockwork Orange (1971). Then we move on to Lolita (1962). Finally we review Eyes Wide Shut (1999).Stanley Kubrick (July 26, 1928 – March 7, 1999) was an American film director, screenwriter, producer, and photographer. Widely considered one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, his films were nearly all adaptations of novels or short stories, spanning a number of genres and gaining recognition for their intense attention to detail, innovative cinematography, extensive set design, and dark humor.A perfectionist who assumed direct control over most aspects of his filmmaking, Kubrick cultivated an expertise in writing, editing, color grading, promotion, and exhibition. He was famous for the painstaking care taken in researching his films and staging scenes, performed in close coordination with his actors, crew, and other collaborators. He frequently asked for several dozen retakes of the same shot in a movie, often confusing and frustrating his actors. Despite the notoriety this provoked, many of Kubrick's films broke new cinematic ground and are now considered landmarks. The scientific realism and innovative special effects in his science fiction epic 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) was a first in cinema history, and the film earned him his only Academy Award (for Best Visual Effects). Filmmaker Steven Spielberg has referred to 2001 as his generation's "big bang" and it is regarded as one of the greatest films ever made. While many of Kubrick's films were controversial and initially received mixed reviews upon release—particularly the brutal A Clockwork Orange (1971), which Kubrick pulled from circulation in the UK following a media frenzy—most were nominated for Academy Awards, Golden Globes, or BAFTA Awards, and underwent critical re-evaluations. For the 18th-century period film Barry Lyndon (1975), Kubrick obtained lenses developed by Carl Zeiss for NASA to film scenes by candlelight. With the horror film The Shining (1980), he became one of the first directors to make use of a Steadicam for stabilized and fluid tracking shots, a technology vital to his Vietnam War film Full Metal Jacket (1987). A few days after hosting a screening for his family and the stars of his final film, the erotic drama Eyes Wide Shut (1999), he died from a heart attack at the age of 70.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59
Throughout the illustrious career of Oscar-winning director James Cameron (Titanic, Avatar), this remains his ONLY film which can be considered a financial failure. It was his very much his first "blank check" project following the mega one-two punch of The Terminator and Aliens which were his previous two films. Like those two beloved hits, he was once again crafting a sci-fi thriller but this time around.....this particular story didn't take place on land nor in space. THIS harrowing action thriller - about a marooned deep sea-drilling team lead by the estranged couple of Bud (Ed Harris) and Lindsey (Mary Elizabeth) who all find themselves marooned more than two miles under the surface of the Pacific Ocean - takes place almost entirely underwater but beyond that, more than 60% of the production was filmed UNDER water. For Cameron, this was not only his first big budget production but he was attempting to film extensive underwater sequences on a scale never done before. As a result, the troubled shoot not only went well beyond its planned production schedule but also significantly over budget. Many cast and crew were miserable, often submerged under water for longer periods than they were comfortable - fortunately no lives were lost but a couple came close. In the middle of a record-breaking summer at the box office lead by the likes of Batman or Indiana Jones, this film opened to middling reviews and disappointing box office. It ended up winning an Oscar for Best Visual Effects and its legacy eventually grew as one of Cameron's most personal films. So now thirty-five years after it was first released, the time has come to revisit.....The Abyss. On this week's show, Dan Kois (writer at Slate and author of Hampton Heights: One Harrowing Night in the Most Haunted Neighborhood in Milwaukee, Wisconsin) fills in for Dana Stevens. The hosts begin by exploring the latest addition to the Star Wars canon, The Acolyte, created by Leslye Headland (Russian Doll). Amandla Sternberg and Lee Jung-jae lead the who-dunnit mystery, and while there is a lot to admire about the show's visuals and depiction of the Master Jedi, The Acolyte often sags under the baggage of the vast Star Wars mythology and suffers from fundamental pacing problems. Then, the three tackle Godzilla Minus One, a genius and emotionally rich parable about wounded masculinity and the national trauma felt in a post-WWII Japan. The kaiju film, released at the end of last year, won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects in 2023, and immediately shot to No. 1 on Netflix when it hit the streaming service last week. Finally, the panel is joined by Dan Charnas (author of Dilla Time and The Big Payback) to discuss Sabrina Carpenter's “Espresso” and his very sharply framed piece for Slate, “The Musical History Lesson Buried Beneath the Song of the Summer.” In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel tackles: children's birthday parties. To commemorate the 70th anniversary of the first Godzilla film, Japanese movie studio Toho unleashed a new installment in its historic franchise last year. Set in Japan in the days following World War II, the film serves a prequel of sorts to the 1954 film, introducing a smaller - yet still destructive - version of the kaiju. Led by a dishonored kamikaze pilot, a group of Japanese veterans and ordinary citizens must stand up to Godzilla when the government fails to act. Written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, the film bit off $115 million at the global box office, snagged an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, and received near-universal acclaim. It's the final countdown to Godzilla Minus One! For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. Please subscribe and give us a positive review. As a pioneer in digital visual effects, Scott Ross was instrumental in the advancement of VFX in Hollywood. He led groundbreaking work at Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) and co-founded Digital Domain with James Cameron and Stan Winston. Scott looks back on his career, discusses systemic problems within the VFX industry, and possible ways to fix them. Scott began his career in sound recording for television and film in the San Francisco Bay Area for a video production company, becoming president of the San Francisco office. The success of Star Wars ignited a space race for studios, and ILM became the holy grail for VFX artists. “I get a phone call from a headhunter who says, 'Hey, Lucasfilm is looking for somebody to head up production operations at Industrial Light and Magic.' And my head exploded," says Scott. "If you're going to live in San Francisco, you want to work at Lucasfilm. That's how I got hired.” At the time, ILM was creating visual effects for Who Framed Roger Rabbit. His experience in the nascent digital video industry sped up the process, and by 1989, ILM developed a technique to work in a digital medium for making special effects. While Scott was at ILM, the company won five Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects. However, ILM's creative spirit began to wane under corporate pressure. "It turned into cubicles and whatnot," says Ross, favoring a "work hard, play hard" environment. This philosophy fueled his decision to leave and co-found Digital Domain in 1993. “When I started Digital Domain, we're going to play hard, work hard and party hard. And that's the culture that I wanted to create. I think generally we did a pretty good job of it.” Digital Domain became a leading VFX company, creating visual effects for films such as Cameron's Titanic. The VFX industry is notoriously troubled, with visual effects houses underbidding on projects to stay competitive and creating dismal working conditions for employees. “There are certain companies that the only way that they could stay alive is by taking advantage of their employees, not paying them overtime, not having health care,” says Scott. “That really comes as a result of the way the clients, studios and the directors deal with the visual effects companies.” He blames a producer mentality that prioritizes squeezing VFX houses rather than fostering a sustainable industry. “The visual effects industry workers need advocates for themselves. Currently, they have no one fighting for them. They need an international trade association that changes the business model.” Today, effects workers continue to voice their need to form a union. The rise of AI further complicates the picture, with some fearing job replacement. Shrinking someone down in order to inject them into someone else, is an absurd movie concept! Producer Steven Spielberg and director Joe Dante knew this, so rather than maintain the bland seriousness of 1966's “Fantastic Voyage”, they decided to have fun with it, and made a better movie because of it. Lt. Tuck Pendleton, a daring Navy pilot, volunteers for a miniaturization experiment that becomes hijacked by industrial spies. He is accidentally injected into the body of a hypochondriac grocery clerk named Jack Putter. Inside Jack's body, Tuck must navigate through his host's bloodstream to survive and eventually reverse the process. With the help of Tuck's girlfriend, Lydia, the trio get tangled up in technological espionage to defeat some inept and unlikely arms dealers. So get ready to shrink down, laugh it up, and twist the night away as Tim Williams and guest co-hosts, Ben Carpenter and Nicholas Pepin, discuss “Innerspace” from 1987 on this episode of the 80s Flick Flashback Podcast. Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover on this episode: This is the only film directed by Joe Dante to win an Academy Award. It won the Best Visual Effects award. Before the Scrimshaw meeting, Picardo's voice was overdubbed with Martin Short's. During the meeting, Picardo used his own voice (with a Short-esque lilt), as the filmmakers didn't think Short "trying" the Cowboy's voice would be convincing enough to make the scene work. Inception is a 2010 science fiction action film[4][5][6] written and directed by Christopher Nolan, who also produced the film with Emma Thomas, his wife. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a professional thief who steals information by infiltrating the subconscious of his targets. He is offered a chance to have his criminal history erased as payment for the implantation of another person's idea into a target's subconscious.[7] The ensemble cast includes Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Elliot Page,[a] Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Tom Berenger, Dileep Rao, and Michael Caine. After the 2002 completion of Insomnia, Nolan presented to Warner Bros. a written 80-page treatment for a horror film envisioning "dream stealers," based on lucid dreaming.[8] Deciding he needed more experience before tackling a production of this magnitude and complexity, Nolan shelved the project and instead worked on 2005's Batman Begins, 2006's The Prestige, and 2008's The Dark Knight.[9] The treatment was revised over six months and was purchased by Warner in February 2009.[10] Inception was filmed in six countries, beginning in Tokyo on June 19 and ending in Canada on November 22.[11] Its official budget was $160 million, split between Warner Bros. and Legendary.[12] Nolan's reputation and success with The Dark Knight helped secure the film's US$100 million in advertising expenditure. Inception's premiere was held in London on July 8, 2010; it was released in both conventional and IMAX theaters beginning on July 16, 2010.[13][14] Inception grossed over $837 million worldwide, becoming the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2010. Considered one of the best films of the 2010s,[15] Inception won four Oscars (Best Cinematography, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Visual Effects) and was nominated for four more (Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Art Direction, Best Original Score) at the 83rd Academy Awards.

"The Creator" contained one of the most fascinating productions of 2023 as it was shot uncommonly compared to other studio-backed sci-fi blockbusters of today to keep its budget low. The work throughout post-production was equally as interesting as the Oscar-nominated Sound Editor and Sound Designers Erik Aadahl, Ethan Van Der Ryn, and Production Sound Mixer Ian Voigt were kind enough to lend us their perspective on what went into creating the sound for Gareth Edwards' film. "Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3" was one of the few bright spots Marvel had in 2023, as the third entry in the franchise brought forth an emotional and thrilling conclusion to James Gunn's trilogy with these beloved characters. It remains the only mini-franchise within the larger MCU to receive an Oscar nomination for each of its films for Best Visual Effects. The Oscar-nominated visual effects team of Stephane Ceretti, Alexis Wajsbrot, Guy Williams, and Theo Bialek were all kind enough to spend time dissecting the work that went into this massive production. "Godzilla Minus One" was one of 2023's most surprising success stories. The film grossed over $105 million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing Japanese "Godzilla" film of all time; it crossed over into the U.S., where it received an overwhelmingly positive response from critics and now has been nominated for an Oscar for Best Visual Effects making it the first film in the 70-year-old franchise to receive an Academy Award nomination. Director, Writer, and Visual Effects Supervisor Takashi Yamazaki was kind enough to spend some time speaking with us about the work that went into the visual effects, which you can listen to below. The film is now up for your consideration for the 96th Academy Awards and the Visual Effects Society, where it is nominated for Outstanding Animated Character In A Photoreal Feature. As we attempt to catch up with all of the Oscar-nominated films, one that escaped our regular podcast schedule upon its theatrical release here in the U.S. was Takashi Yamazaki's critically acclaimed "Godzilla Minus One" starring Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, Yuki Yamada & Kuranosuke Sasaki. With many calling it the best Godzilla film ever made, the Japanese film has been an international success with crossover appeal and has received an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects. What did we think of the story, the characters and performances, the action sequences and visual effects, and, of course, how one of cinema's most iconic figures was presented to a modern-day audience? Tune in as I'm joined by Lauren LaMagna, Dan Bayer, Tom O'Brien, and returning guest Kevin Lee to discuss these points and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review! "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" had its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival, where it received strong reviews, possibly kickstarting a new franchise for Paramount Pictures in the process. The fantasy film features a wide array of creatures, props, sets, and visual effects, all used to immerse audiences in the world-building and get as lost in the movie as millions have in the tabletop role-playing game. Two of the film's supervisors behind the scenes were kind enough to spend some time talking with us about their work on the film: ILM Visual Effects Supervisor Ben Snow and Prosthetics and Hair & Makeup Designer Alessandro Bertolazzi. Please check out their interviews below, and be sure to watch the film on Paramount+, which is up for your consideration in all eligible categories at this year's Academy Awards, including Best Makeup & Hair Styling and Best Visual Effects.
