Under her leadership, the farm has become certified organic, expanded its crop diversity, restored natural ecosystems through reforestation, and launched a line of farm-branded products. A Yale graduate and former U.S. agriculture policy expert, she also has roles within Italian and European farming organisations.Ariane provides a valuable insight into the economic considerations of changing from a conventionally managed farming system to a regenerative one. Tax authorities are becoming more sophisticated, more data-driven and increasingly willing to scrutinise the reality behind multinational operating models, according to Ariane Calloud, a partner in Baker McKenzie's Paris tax dispute resolution practice. Speaking on the latest episode of Taxing Times with ITR, Calloud discussed how growing volumes of data, international information sharing and advances in AI are transforming tax audits and controversy work. In France, she said, transfer pricing (TP) remains a key focus, with authorities increasingly examining whether business operations, decision-making and value creation activities align with groups' transfer pricing policies. The conversation also explored how multinationals can reduce controversy risk before disputes arise. Calloud stressed the importance of understanding how local operations function in practice, regularly reviewing TP arrangements and ensuring consistency between tax positions and public-facing information.  Looking ahead, Calloud predicted that tax authorities will continue to coordinate more closely across borders through simultaneous and joint audits. Et si le corps essayait de nous parler bien avant de nous obliger à nous arrêter ?Dans cet épisode d'États Dames, Ariane partage son parcours marqué par l'épuisement, le burn-out et un diagnostic d'hypothyroïdie.Avant le burn-out, Ariane se décrit comme une jeune femme qui voulait « croquer la vie », toujours prête à en faire davantage, perfectionniste et peu habituée à poser ses limites. Peu à peu, son corps commence pourtant à envoyer des signaux : perte de cheveux, prise de poids, émotions à fleur de peau, fatigue, besoin de café pour tenir… jusqu'à l'épuisement.Avec le recul, elle ne parle plus vraiment de deux burn-out distincts, mais d'un burn-out qui s'est étalé sur deux années, marqué par un retour au travail trop rapide puis un second arrêt beaucoup plus violent. Derrière cette volonté de tenir se cachent aussi la honte, la culpabilité et le sentiment de ne plus être capable.Puis vient le diagnostic d'hypothyroïdie.Ariane raconte cette période d'incompréhension où, malgré les consultations et les démarches entreprises, elle avait l'impression d'avoir « tout fait » sans parvenir à aller mieux.Au fil de son témoignage, elle revient sur son rapport au corps, mais aussi sur la place qu'ont prise le ralentissement, le yoga, la respiration et l'écoute de ses émotions dans son parcours. Elle raconte notamment avoir traversé une période où elle ne ressentait « plus aucun plaisir », « plus aucun goût » et n'avait « plus l'énergie de rien ».Comment reconnaître les signes de l'épuisement ? Pourquoi est-il parfois si difficile de s'autoriser à s'arrêter ? Que se passe-t-il lorsque le corps ne nous permet plus de continuer comme avant ? Today's episode — S05E191, Friday September 11, 2026: Main story: A population-synthesis study published in Nature Astronomy on 10 September argues that magnetars make up roughly half of all neutron stars, not the one-in-a-hundred implied by the catalogues. Celsa Pardo-Araujo and Nanda Rea (Institute of Space Sciences, ICE-CSIC, Barcelona) with Michele Ronchi (ASTRON) and Vanessa Graber (Royal Holloway) modelled the whole isolated-neutron-star population as one family rather than four separate classes, evolving spin-down, magneto-thermal decay and Galactic dynamics together, then filtering the simulated population the way real surveys filter the sky. Of the 24 known neutron stars younger than 2,000 years, magnetars and central compact objects are about 59%; the derived birth fraction averages ~50% (40–70% or 30–50% depending on the assumed birth-field distribution, which peaks at 1–2.5 × 10^14 gauss). Two consequences: the Galactic core-collapse supernova rate has to be higher than assumed, around two per century, and magnetar central-engine models for superluminous supernovae, gamma-ray burst plateaus and fast radio bursts finally have the supply to work. Caveats: it is a model rather than a census, the anchor sample is 24 objects, and 'magnetar' is defined by a field threshold. Southern thread: the field began with SGR 0526−66 in the Large Magellanic Cloud on 5 March 1979, and the same Barcelona group modelled GLEAM-X J162759, found with the Murchison Widefield Array in Western Australia. The rest of the news: ·         Chariklo's rings: The first stellar occultation ever planned specifically for JWST — 18 October 2022 — has been published in Science Advances, led by Yücel Kılıç, Pablo Santos-Sanz and Celia Navas (IAA-CSIC) with Nicolas Rambaux, Bruno Sicardy and Josselin Desmars (LTE) and Damya Souami (LIRA). Against the 2017 ground-based occultations, the inner ring C1R is about 50% more opaque and the outer ring C2R about 60% less, with the ring positions unchanged. Chariklo is the largest known centaur at ~125 km radius; the rings sit at 390 and 405 km and are a few km wide. Candidate explanations: material loss from C2R, material arriving at or collisions grinding down C1R — or a wavelength effect, since infrared is being compared with visible light. The rings were discovered in 2013 by an occultation campaign across Chile, Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. ·         Mercury under bombardment: Kilpua et al. report in Nature Astronomy (8 September) that BepiColombo's fourth Mercury flyby in September 2024 — 165 km above the surface, closer than its eventual science orbit — coincided with a major solar particle eruption. The Finnish-built SIXS instrument watched energetic electrons and protons penetrate Mercury's magnetosphere and precipitate onto the surface over a wide area. That bombardment both sputters atoms off the surface and drives the X-ray fluorescence used to read its composition, and Mercury's small, weak magnetosphere makes it a stand-in for Earth during an extreme solar storm. The spacecraft separated its transfer module on 3 September; gravity capture is 21 November. ·         Europe buys a way home: ESA has awarded The Exploration Company a contract worth up to €760M under ALADDIN (Autonomous LEO Accelerated Demo Docking to ISS Node) — €310M for the demonstration mission, with ESA funding 60% and the company 40%, plus €450M in options for two further flights. The Nyx capsule flies on Ariane 6 and must dock with the ISS no later than Q2 2029, with up to €50M in additional incentive for using European launch vehicles. A Europa tem ciência, indústria e tecnologia espacial, mas continua dependente de terceiros em áreas estratégicas como os lançamentos, as comunicações e o transporte de astronautas. Na Cimeira Internacional do Espaço decorre em Paris, o presidente da Agência Espacial Portuguesa, Ricardo Conde, defende que o desafio já não é provar capacidade, mas ganhar escala, investir e decidir em conjunto. A nova corrida espacial já não se joga apenas na conquista da Lua ou de Marte. Joga-se no controlo das comunicações, dos dados, dos sistemas de navegação, das infra-estruturas digitais e, cada vez mais, da segurança. É neste cenário que Paris acolhe desde ontem, 9 de Setembro, a primeira Cimeira Internacional do Espaço, reunindo governos, agências, empresas e investigadores para discutir quem terá capacidade de agir e de decidir na próxima economia espacial. Para a Europa, a questão tornou-se urgente. Entre a supremacia tecnológica dos Estados Unidos, a afirmação da China e o crescimento acelerado de empresas privadas, o continente procura perceber como preservar a cooperação internacional sem transformar essa cooperação numa dependência estrutural. O presidente da Agência Espacial Portuguesa e chefe da delegação portuguesa no Conselho da Agência Espacial Europeia, Ricardo Conde, começa por rejeitar a ideia de um espaço organizado em blocos fechados. “O espaço nunca se fez, nem nunca se fará, que não seja em cooperação”, afirma, lembrando programas como o Artemis e domínios em que a coordenação entre países é incontornável, como a gestão do tráfego espacial. Mas cooperar não significa abdicar de capacidade própria. “A Europa, e muito bem, procura afirmar a sua resiliência, no sentido de ter alguma autonomia”, sublinha. Para Ricardo Conde, os últimos anos mostraram até que ponto a dependência pode tornar-se uma fragilidade económica, tecnológica e política. A pandemia expôs a vulnerabilidade causada pela desindustrialização; a crise energética revelou os riscos de depender de fornecedores externos; e a guerra na Ucrânia voltou a colocar no centro do debate a dependência europeia dos Estados Unidos em matéria de defesa. “Quando se reage e não se planeia, andamos sempre numa situação de dependência”, observa. O responsável português descreve a Europa como “uma federação de vontades, às vezes boas, outras vezes nem por isso”. E considera que o espaço é hoje um dos terrenos onde essa dificuldade de construir uma estratégia comum se torna mais evidente. A soberania espacial está, desde logo, ligada à soberania digital. “Ninguém pode constituir-se como resiliente, independente ou autónomo quando está completamente dependente das grandes multinacionais e das grandes empresas americanas em serviços”, alerta. O exemplo mais evidente é o Starlink. A guerra na Ucrânia demonstrou o peso estratégico da constelação de satélites da SpaceX na manutenção das comunicações. A Europa ainda não dispõe de uma alternativa equivalente e prepara a constelação IRIS², destinada a garantir comunicações seguras e maior autonomia europeia, mas cuja plena capacidade só deve chegar no final da década. A navegação por satélite mostra, contudo, que a dependência pode ser reduzida. Durante décadas, a Europa viveu sob a predominância do GPS norte-americano. Hoje dispõe do Galileo, desenvolvido para assegurar uma capacidade europeia própria. Para Ricardo Conde, é esse tipo de autonomia que terá de ser construído também noutros segmentos. Um deles é o acesso ao espaço. “Quem controla, ou quem controlar, o acesso ao espaço controla a economia espacial”, afirma. A Europa dispõe actualmente do Ariane 6 e do Vega e começa a assistir ao aparecimento de uma nova geração de lançadores privados. Ricardo Conde vê nesta evolução a possibilidade de criar maior concorrência dentro do próprio continente. “Vai haver uma alteração profunda ao nível da competitividade de que a Europa necessita. Vão aparecer novos lançadores.” Mas permanece uma diferença simbólica e estratégica importante em relação aos Estados Unidos: a Europa consegue colocar satélites em órbita, mas não consegue enviar autonomamente os seus astronautas ao espaço. Para o presidente da Agência Espacial Portuguesa, não é a tecnologia que falta. “A Europa tem uma capacidade científica e técnica fantástica. Agora precisa de dimensão.”  É aqui que surge um dos maiores obstáculos europeus: a fragmentação. Os Estados Unidos dispõem de um Governo federal, de uma agência espacial e de estruturas de defesa inseridas numa mesma arquitectura nacional. Na Europa, as decisões distribuem-se entre a União Europeia, a Agência Espacial Europeia e dezenas de Estados com prioridades e níveis de investimento diferentes. “É uma questão de escala, é também uma questão de consenso político, de vontade política”, resume. Um eventual programa europeu de transporte tripulado exigiria anos de desenvolvimento, recursos financeiros substanciais e, sobretudo, um compromisso político prolongado entre os países. O contraste com a SpaceX ajuda a perceber a dimensão do desafio. Para Ricardo Conde, é errado olhar para a empresa de Elon Musk apenas como o triunfo isolado da iniciativa privada. A SpaceX cresceu apoiada em contratos públicos e numa relação estreita com a NASA e com as estruturas de defesa norte-americanas. Esse investimento permitiu construir uma cadeia quase completa: foguetes reutilizáveis para reduzir o custo dos lançamentos, Starlink para assegurar conectividade e naves capazes de transportar astronautas para a órbita. “Na realidade, tem a cadeia de valor toda”, observa. E a corrida não vai parar nos satélites. Na perspectiva do responsável português, os próximos anos deverão acelerar o desenvolvimento de serviços realizados directamente em órbita. Entre os projectos discutidos pela indústria encontram-se mesmo futuros centros de dados espaciais, uma possibilidade que vai exigir transportar quantidades muito maiores de equipamento para o espaço e garantir ligações permanentes à Terra. É nesse ponto que a capacidade de lançamento poder tornar-se ainda mais decisiva. Os grandes lançadores reutilizáveis norte-americanos prometem transportar cargas muito superiores às actuais, abrindo espaço a actividades económicas que hoje permanecem sobretudo no plano experimental. A resposta europeia, sustenta Ricardo Conde, não tem necessariamente de passar pela criação de uma cópia da SpaceX. Pode assentar na soma das capacidades existentes. França mantém um papel central nos lançadores e na indústria aeronáutica; Alemanha e Itália possuem importantes competências tecnológicas; o Reino Unido continua a ser um parceiro fundamental; e países como Espanha começam também a desenvolver novos actores privados. Há ainda espaço para países mais pequenos. Portugal, Bélgica ou Luxemburgo dificilmente podem competir isoladamente com as grandes potências espaciais, mas podem especializar-se e contribuir para construir a escala europeia. “A França é um actor importantíssimo, pelo seu conhecimento aeronáutico e pelas aplicações espaciais; a Alemanha, a Itália, o Reino Unido, que é fundamental termos sempre connosco, e começam também a aparecer outros actores importantes”, enumera Ricardo Conde. Portugal, acrescenta, pode contribuir “ao seu nível de investimento” para essa capacidade colectiva. É, no fundo, esta a equação que Paris coloca sobre a mesa. A Europa não parte do zero: fabrica satélites, desenvolve lançadores, explora o espaço, possui empresas de referência e uma das mais importantes comunidades científicas do mundo. O problema é transformar essas capacidades dispersas numa força suficientemente integrada para competir num sector cada vez mais estratégico.
