A prayer based on Psalm 13:5-6. It was one of those, “terrible, horrible, no good, very bad” days. From the moment I woke up to find our air conditioner wasn't working during a hot Alabama summer, it was clear this day wasn't going in the best day ever column. Harsh words, disappointing news, and miserable heat blended together into what could, at best, be described as a hot mess of a day. I wanted a do over by 10:00 AM. A prayer based on 1 John 4:11. But as I look back, I recognize that moments pass very quickly. It's made me look back on the years we have had with my daughter in our home. All the years, and there have been many, and all the good times, and there have been many of those too, play through my mind and I wish I could slow time down. Since I can't, I've spent some time making a list of the things I want my daughter to know about several different topics. One of the most important of these is the truth about real love. What I want her to grasp about love is rooted deeply in what I've learned through the word of God. How do you practice real love daily? Are there areas in your life where you are living based on the 'feeling' of love, rather than real love? Listen to today's podcast episode from Teri Lynne Underwood. A prayer based on Matthew 20:15-16. When Jesus invited people to follow him, his invitation wasn't an opportunity for advancement. In fact, it was quite the opposite. He wasn't offering a chance to become famous or to build a following, Jesus gave his followers a different challenge. His call was one to be last, to serve, to honor others ahead of themselves. A prayer based on Matthew 4:3-4. Do you struggle to find time in the Word? The Bible is so much more than a sentimental piece of memorabilia—it's the living and active Word of God. It's the place where we find God's revelation of himself to us, where we learn of his plans and purpose for us, and where we discover the depths of his love and sacrifice for us. How much time have you invested in study, memorization, and meditation? How integral are these practices to your spiritual life? Listen to today's podcast episode from Teri Lynne Underwood. As moms, one of the most common phrases we use is probably, “pay attention!” We want our kids to pay attention to what they are told to what they do, and to what is going on around them. When we remind our children about the value of being aware, of listening well, of paying attention, it's for their good. Jesus's words to his disciples were rooted in that same sentiment... Do you pay attention to the way Jesus lived? The way He instructed His followers to live? Listen to today's episode from Teri Lynne Underwood, based on Mark 4:24. Praying comes naturally to some and not to others. I have to be honest that it does not come naturally to me (#messymiddle)! But it is an ESSENTIAL practice for the Christian life and the life of anyone on mission. It's a great gift that can carry us through, give us direction, and help us practice trust. I don't want you to feel inadequate in your prayer life any longer. So my guest, Brooke McGlothlin, gives us just the encouragement and practical wisdom you may need today as well as a little prayer teaching from me! Brooke answers... Why should we pray for our kids or anyone else in our lives? What makes it effective? What do we need to keep in mind when our prayers feel like they are not being answered? Life feels really busy. What would you say to the women who feel like they don't have time to pray AT ALL, let alone for their kids? What practical wisdom can you give us? Brooke McGlothlin has encouraged thousands of moms toward a richer prayer life for over a decade. She is the cofounder of Million Praying Moms, a popular online ministry that exists to help moms make prayer their first and best response to the challenges of parenting. Brooke is the author of several books and resources for moms and lives in the mountains of southwest Virginia with her husband and their two sons. About ten years ago Teri Lynne Underwood attended a conference for pastors’ wives. Since her husband was in student ministry at the time and they had a young daughter, she chose to attend a workshop on beauty and modesty. Teri Lynne was both shocked and offended by what the facilitator said in the session. She urged women to give no thought to their appearance and said that any time and money spent on physical appearance was at the very least shameful and could also be sinful. But that's not what Teri Lynne found in the Bible... A balance, yes? But shameful? No. Well, it doesn't have to be. Join Brooke and Erin today as they talk to Teri Lynne in depth about how to raise daughters with a correct understanding of beauty straight from the heart of God.
It's pretty easy to get consumed with the problems and perspectives of one gender or the other, and forget, or just not pay attention to, the things that both boys and girls are struggling with today and how they affect everyone involved. Brooke recently had an eye-opening experience with her sons where she realized that she was only looking at half the equation. The boy-centered perspectives that have formed the lens through which she sees the world for so long were limiting her from having a true understanding of the bigger picture (and stealing her ability to have true compassion). A few talks with Teri Lynne Underwood, the new Million Praying Moms Girlmom Content Manager, and things made a whole lot more sense. Turns out having the proper perspective can't happen unless you consider everyone involved. Join Brooke and Erin on today's episode as they interview Teri Lynne, author of Praying for Girls: Asking God for the Things They Need Most about the benefits of taking time to understand the bigger picture on this episode of Million Praying Moms.
