Only with the powerful role of God’s kindness in leading us—and our children—to repentance. Today's episode reminds us that prioritizing relationship over behavior correction and learning to love our children harder than they fight us. Grounded in Romans 2:4, this episode offers encouragement and perspective for parents feeling overwhelmed and unsure of how to guide their children well. Prayer Father, thank you for your great kindness. Thank you, Lord, for bringing us to repentance because of it. I pray today, Lord, that you would help us to show that same kindness to our children, help us to fight for them, Lord, and may they know that there is nothing they could ever do that would make us not love them. Today I have three very special guests, my daughter, Elise Roper Younts, along with her husband, Wes, and his mom, Frieda (who's also one of my best friends!). Elise and Wes walked their own lonely journeys through singleness before finally finding each other and marrying last March. Even though for most of their lives they lived exactly 7.3 miles apart, and Wes's mom and I have been best friends for 28 years, they'd never met except in their preschool Sunday School class. You may remember Elise's story from episode 19 about how her fiancé broke off their engagement and left her heartbroken. Wes has his own testimony of 10 years of singleness and not dating after he realized he had allowed dating to become an idol for him. I introduced Frieda to you, along with Julie, in episode one. Frieda and I walked with our children through their lonely seasons of singleness and prayed for them through the difficult times. We had no way of knowing at the time, but God was working behind the scenes to draw Elise and Wes closer to Him so that He could bring them together in marriage. In this episode Frieda and I discuss the struggles of parenting single adult children and I share the prayer I wrote asking God to bring Elise a husband. Elise and Wes share their wedding vows that they wrote to one another. If you're a single adult, or the parent of a single adult, and have grown discouraged in your loneliness and feeling left out, I pray this episode will encourage you and bring hope to your journey. A heartfelt prayer, based on Psalm 23, for parents, grandparents, and caregivers who long for their children to walk faithfully with Christ. Drawing from the timeless comfort of Psalm 23, Kristine Brown reminds us that although we can’t control the spiritual choices our children make, we can intercede for them in prayer—and trust in God’s faithfulness to guide and protect them. Today's Bible Verse: Psalm 23:6 (ESV) – “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

Text me a message! I would love to hear from you!Disciplining our children is one of the most challenging aspects of parenting. As a new mom, I found myself constantly avoiding those tough moments of correction because they stirred up so many difficult emotions and left me feeling utterly inadequate. Maybe you've felt that same sense of defeat after yet another power struggle with your child—wondering if you missed some crucial parenting class that everyone else seemed to attend. In this episode we'll look at the differences between discipline, correction, and punishment, offering a grace-filled perspective. Discipline isn't just about enforcing rules; it's about discipleship—walking alongside our children and showing them the way. When we understand that correction is simply putting something right that's out of alignment, and punishment should have natural connections to the behavior, our approach shifts. The four key principles shared in this episode changed my parenting journey for the better: getting crystal clear on what you're actually training your children to do; building a relationship strong enough to sustain correction; believing your child genuinely wants to obey you (even when all evidence points to the contrary); and leveraging natural consequences instead of arbitrary punishments. That third principle was particularly helpful with me one son who seemed determined to challenge every boundary I set. What if your child's seemingly rebellious behavior isn't rebellion at all, but simply immaturity that needs patient training? What if the power struggles you're experiencing stem from your own perspective more than your child's heart? These questions helped me move from frustrated anger to connected leadership, and they might just transform your parenting too. Listen in for practical wisdom on reaching your child's heart while maintaining healthy boundaries, creating a home where both grace and truth can flourish. 112: Navigating Family Wealth Transfers: Emotional Intelligence and Effective Communication with Jill and Sean Maher

“We're talking about giving space to practice. Not only practice the relationships but also practice managing money.” -Sean Maher   Most people plan their estate down to the last dollar, but forget to prepare for the emotional fallout that almost always comes from a lack of proper communication between family members.   Our hosts, Stephanie McCullough and Kevin Gaines, sit down with husband and wife team Sean and Jill Maher to talk about their book The Greatest Gift: 9 Principles for the Transfer of Your Legacy Along with Your Wealth, which journeys into the emotional side of passing down wealth and family legacy.   The idea for the book came after Sean, a financial advisor, saw a well-planned inheritance fall apart when a family started fighting after their parents passed. He brought the issue home to Jill, a mental health counselor, who pointed out that what he was really seeing wasn't a planning problem—it was grief. Together, they've come up with nine key principles that help families avoid drama and stay connected regarding inheritance.   The big takeaway? It's not just about the money. No matter how much (or little) you're passing on, what matters most is communication, shared values, and emotional safety.   Jill and Sean suggest families start having small, low-pressure meetings early, while everyone's still around to talk things through. It's about creating space for honest conversations, building trust, and setting expectations. Their advice blends practical planning with emotional wisdom, encouraging people to treat legacy as a relationship, not just a transaction.   At the heart of it all, their message is simple: don't avoid the tough conversations—have them, and carry them out with love.   Key Topics: Why Sean and Jill Wrote The Greatest Gift (00:49) “You're Passing on Not Just Money, But Also Legacy” (04:33) How to Set Up and Facilitate the Inheritance Conversation with a Family (10:22) Setting Expectations Upfront to Nip Objections in the Bud (21:07) Why Sharing Your Story is So Critical (28:52) Nurturing Independence (35:53) Creating a Safe Environment for Your Children (45:49)   Resources: The Greatest Gift Book USE COUPON CODE: takebackretirement for $5 off and free shipping!   If you like what you've been hearing, we invite you to subscribe on your favorite platform and leave us a review. Text me a message! I would love to hear from you! This week's episode first aired February of 2023.  It has been my most popular episode to date.  Enjoy this replay...Have you ever felt like taking care of yourself was somehow selfish?  After all, so many other people are counting on you. That mindset nearly broke me—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. When my boys were 5, 4, and 2, my body staged what I call a "mini rebellion." Heart surgery, chronic hives, thyroid issues, kidney stones, and persistent headaches all converged in the same season. This mini-health crisis became my wake-up call.  I had to face an uncomfortable truth: I had been operating under the false belief that being a good mother meant giving until I had nothing left. That's when I realized that mature people recognize their own needs and take responsibility for meeting them. This wasn't selfishness—it was wisdom. God gives us permission to create balanced, healthy lifestyles for ourselves and our families. We have far more control over the rhythms of our homes than we often realize. As mothers, we set the emotional tone for our entire household. When we're depleted and running on empty, everyone feels it. When we're rested and nourished—both physically and spiritually—we create an atmosphere where our families can thrive. In this episode I share six principles that helped me change my approach to motherhood and self-care: recognizing your needs, creating balanced routines, prioritizing rest, dealing with the chaos of busy seasons, asking for help without shame, and committing to growth in self-care. You weren't meant to be a martyr for your family; you were meant to be a blessing. And you can't pour from an empty cup.Subscribe to my weekly newsletter at graceformyhome.com to receive regular encouragement in your journey of motherhood and faith. Text me a message! I would love to hear from you!Have you ever felt trapped in a spiral of negativity, where every challenge seems to confirm that life is just hard? That's exactly where I found myself years ago as a new stay-at-home mom to three young children.  My home began feeling more like a prison than the sanctuary I'd envisioned. When my husband finally pointed out how negative I'd become, I was initially furious. But that observation catalyzed the change I needed. This episode is about the power of gratitude and positive perspective as revealed in Proverbs 15:15: "All the days of the afflicted are made evil, but those of a merry heart have a continual feast." When we see ourselves as victims, we unconsciously filter our experiences through that lens, confirming our negative expectations. But when we cultivate thankfulness, we begin noticing the countless blessings that were always there. This isn't about embracing "toxic positivity" or denying legitimate struggles. Rather, it's about recognizing that thankfulness keeps us in right relationship with God and transforms how we experience our daily lives. Through practical steps like keeping a gratitude journal and consciously choosing to "look up" rather than "look down," we can break free from negativity's grip and experience joy regardless of circumstances. What would change if you started intentionally documenting God's faithfulness in your life? How might shifting your perspective from "afflicted" to "blessed" transform not just your experience, but the atmosphere you create for those around you? Grace for My Home | Christian Moms, Growing in Faith, Spirit-Led, Hearing from God, Sowing Truth

Text me a message! I would love to hear from you!Pride forms a barrier between us and growth. When we believe we have all the answers, we create no space to receive new wisdom or healing. This spiritual principle appears throughout Scripture - God exalts the humble but resists the proud. Why? Because humility acknowledges our need for something beyond ourselves.Jesus consistently bypassed religious elites to fellowship with society's outcasts. When questioned about dining with "sinners," His response was profoundly simple: "Those who are well have no need for a physician." Only those who recognize their sickness seek healing. During Holy Week, we're reminded how Jesus entered Jerusalem on a humble donkey. The common people recognized Him while religious authorities questioned His authority, unable to see God's work because it didn't conform to their expectations. Many of us struggle with the idea of submission because those in authority over us, who were supposed to protect us, hurt us. When those meant to protect us cause harm instead, walls form. We associate submission with control rather than its true purpose: receiving protection, wisdom, and growth from those further along the journey. God never forces submission - He guides and instructs while preserving our freedom to choose. True authority serves rather than dominates. The most extraordinary miracles often aren't physical but internal - deep healing of wounded hearts that transforms victims into vessels of healing for others. This restoration begins with humility to admit we need help and continues as we forgive what we cannot forget. Your healing journey isn't just for you; your testimony builds faith in others that their wounds aren't beyond God's reach. Are you struggling with trusting authority? Has pride built walls that keep even God at a distance? Consider how humbling yourself might create space for the healing and growth you've been seeking. Your breakthrough may be just one prayer away: "Lord, help me." Our hosts Stephanie McCullough and Kevin Gaines sit down with Steve and Jill Marshall of Silver Path Consulting to discuss all things future care, from housing, to finance, to family support.   Jill and Steve lament the current lack of societal preparedness for a growing senior population, often referred to as a “silver tsunami” that's growing bigger each year.   They stress the importance of starting early discussions about aging within families, the benefits and drawbacks of different living arrangements, and an effective way to handle comprehensive information and resource management between the adult children of aging parents.   The Marshalls also discuss essential legal documents like wills, durable power of attorney, and healthcare power of attorney. Drawing from the recent tragic situation around the passing of Gene Hackman and his wife, they also discuss some technological solutions that adult children can use to facilitate elder care and the value of expert consultation to provide neutral, third-party advice that can ease family tensions.   Key Topics: Preparing for the Silver Tsunami (04:47) How to Talk About Future Living Arrangements with Your Aging Parents (10:39) Discussing the Costs of Future Care (17:00) Role Modeling to Your Children the Right Way to Prepare for Future Care (23:07) What Most People Overlook (28:06) Ensuring Everyone in the Family Has a Role (32:30) The Gene Hackman Case (38:53) Steps You Can Take Today to Secure Your Aging Parents' Future (45:12)   Resources: Silver Path Consulting Take Back Retirement Ep. 74: Taking Charge: Carol Marak's Strategy for Solo Aging and Retirement Planning Take Back Retirement Ep. 83: Combatting Fraud and Protecting Your Financial Future with AARP's Kathy Stokes     If you like what you've been hearing, we invite you to subscribe on your favorite platform and leave us a review. Text me a message! I would love to hear from you!We often confusing having knowledge with possessing wisdom. But true wisdom requires discernment to recognize truth and the discipline to apply it in our daily lives. Wisdom isn't acquired overnight —it's cultivated through relationships with those who've walked the path before us.When we begin to grow in wisdom, we naturally desire to share what we've learned with those we love. Like the woman in Proverbs 9 who calls others to her table, we want to give others the wisdom God has given us. But sharing wisdom requires humility and patience, recognizing that sometimes others need to stumble themselves before they can value what we offer. The beauty of this process is that we don't need to have everything figured out to guide others—we simply need to be a few steps ahead, close enough to extend a hand while continuing our own journey.Whether you're a mother teaching children or a mentor guiding younger women, this episode will encourage you to recognize the wisdom God has already cultivated in you and inspire you to share that wisdom with those you love. You're Eating Plastic — The Silent Chemical Phthalates Attacking Your Body

Are the products you use every day poisoning you? In this episode of Super Life, Darin Olien dives into phthalates, a class of toxic chemicals found in food packaging, personal care products, medical devices, and even children's toys. Despite mounting evidence linking phthalates to hormone disruption, infertility, obesity, and chronic illness, these chemicals remain largely unregulated in the United States. Darin breaks down why phthalates are everywhere, how they impact your body, and what you can do to protect yourself. He also highlights Minnesota's groundbreaking SF 188 bill, which aims to force food manufacturers to test and disclose phthalate contamination for the first time in U.S. history. If you care about your health, your family, and the toxic load in your daily life, this is a must-listen episode that will make you rethink what you're consuming. Government Responsibility in the Spread of Phthalates Phthalates are chemicals used to make plastics more flexible and durable. Since the mid-20th century, they've been incorporated into countless consumer goods, from food packaging to personal care products. This widespread use is largely due to regulatory inaction and the prioritization of industrial interests over public health. In the United States, agencies like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have been slow to regulate phthalates, despite mounting evidence linking them to serious health issues. These include endocrine disruption, reproductive harm, and chronic illnesses such as obesity and diabetes. Unlike Europe, which has banned certain phthalates in food packaging and children's products, the U.S. has often allowed industry self-regulation, leading to widespread contamination in consumer goods. The Industrial Agricultural Revolution and Processed Foods The post-World War II industrialization of food production significantly increased the use of phthalates. As food manufacturing scaled up, plastics became integral in packaging and processing equipment, leading to phthalate leaching into our food supply. Highly processed foods are particularly susceptible due to multiple points of plastic contact during production and storage. Studies have shown that individuals consuming more processed and fast foods have higher levels of phthalates in their bodies. Minnesota's Legislative Action: A Step Forward In January 2025, Minnesota State Senator Heather Gustafson introduced Senate File 188 (SF 188), a bill requiring food manufacturers to test their products for phthalates and publicly disclose the results. If passed, this legislation would be the first of its kind in the U.S., aiming to increase transparency and encourage manufacturers to reduce phthalate levels in their products. According to Senator Gustafson, "Minnesotans have the right to know whether the food they are eating and serving their families is contaminated with toxic phthalates. My bill will help consumers make healthier buying decisions and create a strong incentive for food manufacturers to get plastic chemicals out of our food."  advocacy.consumerreports.org Why This Matters This bill is crucial because it: Increases Transparency: For the first time, food companies would be required to test for and disclose phthalate levels, creating public awareness of the contamination problem. Encourages Stricter Regulations: Public disclosure could lead to consumer pressure for stronger nationwide bans and restrictions. Prioritizes Public Health: It challenges the longstanding prioritization of industry preferences over public health, acknowledging that chemical exposure is a public health crisis. Addresses Chronic Illness: With rising rates of metabolic disorders and hormone-related diseases linked to endocrine-disrupting chemicals like phthalates, holding manufacturers accountable is a step toward reversing this trend. Products Commonly Containing Phthalates and Associated Health Risks Phthalates are pervasive in many consumer products. Here's a breakdown of common sources and the potential health implications: Personal Care Products: Items such as nail polishes, hair sprays, aftershave lotions, cleansers, and shampoos often contain phthalates.  fda.gov Food Packaging and Processed Foods: Phthalates can leach into food from packaging materials and during processing. Diets high in dairy and meat have been associated with higher levels of phthalate exposure.  webmd.com Medical Devices: Some medical devices, including intravenous bags and tubing, contain phthalates to increase flexibility.  pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov Household Items: Products like vinyl flooring, shower curtains, and certain furniture may contain phthalates.  toxicfreefuture.org Children's Toys: Some toys, especially those made from flexible plastics, can contain phthalates.  toxicfreefuture.org   Health Risks Associated with Phthalate Exposure Phthalates are known endocrine disruptors, meaning they can interfere with the body's hormonal systems. Potential health effects include: Reproductive Issues: Exposure has been linked to reproductive problems, including reduced fertility.  pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov Developmental Problems: Prenatal exposure may lead to developmental issues in children.  pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov Respiratory Issues: There is evidence suggesting a link between phthalate exposure and respiratory problems, such as asthma.  pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov Metabolic Effects: Some studies have associated phthalate exposure with metabolic disorders, including insulin resistance and obesity.  pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov   Steps to Reduce Phthalate Exposure To minimize exposure to phthalates: Choose Phthalate-Free Products: Opt for personal care items labeled as phthalate-free. Limit Processed Food Intake: Reducing consumption of processed foods can decrease phthalate exposure. Use Alternatives to Plastic: Whenever possible, choose glass, stainless steel, or other non-plastic materials for food storage and household items. Stay Informed: Regularly check resources like the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep database to find products free from harmful chemicals. How You Can Take Action While Minnesota is leading the way, collective action is essential to drive nationwide change. Here are steps you can take: Support the Bill: If you're in Minnesota, contact your state legislators to express support for SF 188. You can find more information and track the bill's progress here. Sign Petitions: Look for petitions advocating for the reduction of phthalates in consumer products and add your voice. Stay Informed: Follow organizations like Consumer Reports and Clean Water Action, which are actively involved in this issue. Reduce Personal Exposure: Limit consumption of highly processed foods, use glass or stainless steel for food storage, and avoid products with "fragrance" listed as an ingredient, as it can be a source of phthalates. Active Petition to Support Minnesota's SF 188 As of now, there isn't a specific petition available for Minnesota's SF 188 bill. However, you can take proactive steps to support this legislation: Contact Legislators: Reach out to Minnesota state legislators to express your support for SF 188. Personalized messages can be impactful. Stay Informed: Monitor the bill's progress through the Minnesota Revisor's Office website. Conclusion Minnesota's initiative is a significant step toward addressing the pervasive issue of phthalate contamination. However, true accountability requires federal-level bans, a shift toward non-toxic alternatives, and a rethinking of industrial food production. By staying informed and taking action, we can collectively push for a healthier future.   Bibliography Consumer Reports.
