I talk about why the most important work we do is believing in Jesus, and why everything else we do for God has to flow from that root. I also encourage you that your quiet witness at home matters for eternity, even when your children wander and you feel unseen. • John 6:29 and the “work of God” as belief in Jesus • the tension between wanting the best for our kids and not being able to make them believe • salvation as the work of the Holy Spirit and our role as truthful witnesses • witness as words backed by a consistent life, not just talk • the gospel lived out in everyday discipleship at home • hope for prodigals and why our children still know the way back • asking God for wisdom to point our children to Jesus If you send me a message through fan mail, unless you give me your email address, I can't respond. Survival mode doesn't always look like a meltdown. Sometimes it looks like a capable mom who keeps the house running, loves Jesus, serves everyone, and still feels exhausted, numb, and quietly resentful. That's why this conversation with spirit-led life coach Tana Johnston is so important. We talk about what survival mode really is, how it slowly becomes “normal,” and why it drains more than your energy. It can steal your identity. Tana walks through the first step she coaches women to take: returning to the Lord with open-handed surrender, not box-checking faith. From there, we dig into identity in Christ (Ephesians 2:10), renewing your mind, and how to stop magnifying the problem and start anchoring to God's promises. You'll also hear how guilt and shame keep moms trapped, and how receiving God's grace reshapes the way we show up with our kids.Connect with Tana:https://www.tanaleejohnston.com/Stop Survival Mode Podcast on Apple Podcasts Stop Survival Mode Podcast on SpotifyText Audrey a message! Most parents walk into IEP or 504 meetings hoping to advocate for their child, but unfortunately, many of them walk out feeling unheard, overwhelmed, and unsure of what just happened. In this episode of The Soaring Child podcast, Dana sits down with attorney and licensed clinical mental health clinician Paula Yost to break down exactly why these meetings feel so difficult and what you can do to change that. Paula brings a rare and deeply valuable perspective, combining legal expertise with real-life experience as a mom navigating the system herself. She is the author of Tumbleweeds: How to Be an Advocate for Your Children and Yourself in a Failing System. You'll learn the critical differences between IEPs and 504 plans (and why many children with ADHD are often placed in the wrong one), how to recognize when your child isn't truly being supported (even if their grades look "fine"), and what to say in the moment when you feel dismissed or unheard. This conversation is packed with practical strategies, real scripts you can use immediately, and empowering insights to help you walk into your next school meeting with clarity and confidence. Most importantly, it will remind you that you have the right to advocate for your child every step of the way. The culture is aggressively sexualized right now—and if you feel overwhelmed as a dad, you're not crazy. Media, entertainment, and even government messaging constantly push the idea that sex has no boundaries and no consequences. But the fruit of that “freedom” is everywhere: broken hearts, depression, shattered marriages, fatherless generations—and children being exposed far earlier than ever before. In this episode, we speak directly to fathers about how to fight for your children's sexual purity. This is a real battle, and your kids are in the crosshairs—but God designed you to be the shepherd of your flock. We talk honestly and explicitly about what dads must do: how to start the conversation early, build guardrails, pray over them, watch carefully, and lead with courage so you can one day hand your child to their future spouse with a clear conscience. I'm thrilled to introduce you to my friend Jodie Berndt as we wrap up the prayer series with three special interviews. I've known Jodie for eight years, and her books have been such a blessing in my life—especially "Praying the Scriptures for Your Children," which I've read three times. Jodie has written over a dozen books on praying scripture for your children, teens, adult children, marriage, and life, so whether you're a parent or not, there's something here for you. In this conversation, Jodie shares her personal testimony of why she came to praying scripture and how it's impacted her walk with God. We talk about why prayer matters, how to turn passages into conversations with God, and practical ways to get started if this practice is new to you. Jodie's wisdom comes from 40 years of marriage, raising four children, and teaching Bible study in her local church—and her heart for family and scripture shines through everything she does. If you've ever felt overwhelmed by what to pray for or struggled to find the words, this episode will equip you with a biblical framework for praying with confidence. Send a textAs we have discussed in previous episodes, trained advocates can help protect the rights of kids in IEP meetings and other legal proceedings. Unfortunately, there are times when additional help is required, times when a lawyer is needed. My guest this episode is Paula Yost. Paula is an attorney who is committed to, what she calls, “legal social work,” which is advocating for kids at the intersection of law and education or social service. Paula and I discuss her role, what you can do to avoid needing an attorney, and how you can tell when you do. More information about Paula, her law firm, and her book, Tumbleweeds: How to be an Advocate for Your Children and Yourself in a Failing System, is talkingaboutkids.com.

Most Christian men aren't building their families in a way that is producing strength, legacy, or long-term faithfulness. The Bible teaches us a better way. In the third episode of this "Abrahamic Starter Kit Series," we unveil The Abrahamic Model — a completely different operating system for marriage, child-raising, and money. In this episode, we go back to the biblical mandate and show what it looks like for a man to lead his home with sacrificial authority so that his wife thrives and his children grow up ready to carry the family torch. This isn't about trends. It's about reclaiming God's original design — and building something that lasts for generations. DescriptionChristopher Perrin explores why “classical education” is both widely used and widely misunderstood—and why the language we choose matters. He surveys common assumptions people attach to the word classical (Greek and Roman history, Great Books, elitism, Eurocentrism) and explains why the modern renewal is, for better or worse, “stuck” with the adjective. Perrin argues that we cannot speak clearly about education without metaphor and analogy, since language itself is rooted in metaphor (from lingua, “tongue”). He then turns to the ancient Greek and Latin vocabularies of education—especially paideia (formation) and trophē (nourishment)—to show how earlier cultures understood education as shaping a human person, not merely transmitting information. Using Ephesians 6:4, he compares Greek and Latin renderings (Paul and Jerome) to illustrate how meaning is often “lost in translation” when rich terms are flattened into single English words. Perrin closes by suggesting that if he had to choose one word to gather the tradition, it would be formation—a metaphor that points to education's deepest aim.Episode OutlineWhy “classical education” is misunderstood: common reactions and cultural assumptionsWhy we keep the word classical: branding, public discourse, and the need for clearer definitionMetaphor is unavoidable: language, analogy, and the “dead metaphors” we no longer noticeGreek terms for education: paideia (formation) and paidia (play), plus other educational vocabularyTrophe as nourishment: education as bringing up, feeding, and forming a childEphesians 6:4 as a case study: Paul's Greek terms and Jerome's Latin translation Translation problems: why one English word rarely matches a rich Greek/Latin term The need for “economy with clarity”: using more words (and better words) to describe educationA proposed center-word: formation as the best single term to gather education's aimsWhere to continue learning: the podcast, ClassicalU, and ongoing reflections on definitionsKey Topics & TakeawaysWords carry history—and drift over time: Even identical spellings (like “educate”) may not mean what they once meant.Metaphor isn't optional: We describe complex realities (like education) through images, comparisons, and inherited figures of speech.Education is formation, not mere information: Ancient terms frame schooling as upbringing, cultivation, and shaping character.Greek paideia is richer than a single English equivalent: Translations often require multiple terms (training, discipline, instruction) to approximate meaning.Education is nourishment (trophe): The image of feeding and raising up reinforces education's humane, embodied, relational nature.Translation always involves choices: Comparing Paul's Greek with Jerome's Latin exposes what can be gained—and lost—across languages.Clear speech requires more words, not fewer: When society forgets education's purpose, precision often demands fuller description.Questions & DiscussionWhat does it mean to study the past “in its pastness”?Discuss why people in the past may act in ways we do not recognize—or approve. How can teachers pursue truth without turning history into propaganda or therapy? What do people assume when they hear “classical education” in your context?List the top three assumptions you encounter (e.g., “Great Books only,” elitist, Eurocentric, test-driven). Draft one sentence you could use to clarify what you mean—and what you don't mean.Where do you see metaphor doing “hidden work” in the way educators talk?Identify common metaphors you use (pipeline, outcomes, delivery, rigor, standards, growth). What do those metaphors emphasize—and what might they obscure? If education is “formation,” what exactly is being formed?Name the top three aims you believe education should form (virtue, wisdom, piety, civic responsibility, attention, love of truth). How does your school's daily life (not just its curriculum) support those aims? How does the image of education as “nourishment” challenge modern schooling? What “diet” are students receiving—intellectually, morally, spiritually, culturally? What might “malnourishment” look like in a school (and what would renewal look like)?Suggested Reading & ResourcesMortimer Adler: The Paideia Way of Classical Education by Robert Woods, Edited by David DienerThe Good Teacher: Ten Key Pedagogical Principles That Will Transform Your Teaching by Christopher A. A Prayer to Have Patience with Your Children by Brooke McGlothlin Before motherhood, it’s easy to believe we have our emotions under control—until the right circumstances reveal what’s really in our hearts. In this episode, we explore how parenting can expose our desire for control and how God invites us to a better way. True power isn’t found in dominance or perfection, but in patience, surrender, and dependence on God’s strength. Reference: Proverbs 16:32 Prayer: Father, help me make good use of the tools you've made available to me to be for those I love most. In Jesus' name, amen. Letting Go Isn’t Losing—It’s Trusting God with Your Children’s Future How do you faithfully release your children into the world while still nurturing connection and influence? In this profoundly honest episode, host Catherine is joined by Jaime Hampton of the Praying Christian Women Podcast to tackle one of the most challenging—and transformative—realities of parenting: letting go. For Christian parents, “letting go” isn’t about giving up; it’s about surrendering control, deepening trust, and transferring ownership of our children’s faith from our hands into God’s. Drawing from personal experience and biblical wisdom, Catherine and Jaime explore four distinct phases of parenting, revealing how to step back while keeping communication and relationship strong. What You’ll Discover in This Episode: The Four Phases of Parenting Caregiver: From diapers to first steps, parents meet every need. Cop: Setting boundaries and keeping children safe before they fully understand. Coach: Explaining the “why” behind rules as children mature. Counselor: Giving advice only when asked, respecting your adult child’s autonomy while remaining a trusted source of wisdom. Jesus as the Model for Letting Go: In a powerful discussion on John 17, Jaime and Catherine reflect on how Jesus prepared His disciples, equipped them, and ultimately sent them out, because “greater works than these you will do.” Christ’s example gives parents a biblical blueprint for releasing children in faith, not fear. Prayer—The Invisible Influence: Letting go doesn’t mean the end of parental influence. As Catherine says, “Our greatest influence over the lives of our kids happens on our knees.” Whether praying through a prodigal season or releasing a child to public school, parents have spiritual authority to intercede for their children, guided by God’s wisdom and timing. MEET THE GUEST: Jaime Hampton is a wife and mother of three who recently relocated from Alaska to Utah with her family, embracing the challenges of a new climate and culture. With her eldest in college and two younger kids in school, Jaime co-hosts the Praying Christian Women podcast with her longtime friend and prayer partner, Alana Terry. Their show began as an outgrowth of their honest coffee-time conversations about faith and prayer, offering encouragement for women to grow spiritually. If you've ever delayed looking at your numbers, dreaded a bookkeeping meeting, or felt a pit in your stomach when someone says "Let's review your finances," this episode is going to feel like a deep exhale. In this conversation, Danielle sits down with financial advisor and partner at Orange Financial Brad Cunningham for an honest look at why entrepreneurs struggle with money clarity and why confidence doesn't come from spreadsheets. It comes from understanding your numbers and applying that knowledge to your life and your business. Key Takeaways: Money Avoidance Is Emotional, Not Logistical: Most entrepreneurs avoid their financials because looking at numbers exposes vulnerability. When you understand the emotions underneath, clarity becomes much easier. Savings Habits Matter More Than Investment Choices: Brad explains why even the best investment strategy can't fix a poor savings rate and why behavior is the real foundation of wealth. Traditional Budgets Fail Because They Feel Limiting: Instead of obsessing over restrictions, focus on understanding your cash flow and aligning spending with your values and goals. Entrepreneurs Often "Out-Earn" Their Problems Without Solving Them: As revenue grows, lifestyle often expands at the same pace. Real financial health requires intentional guardrails. You Need a Money Team, Not One Money Person: Bookkeeper, tax accountant, CFO/coach, and financial advisor—each role supports a different part of your financial picture, and they should work together. Tax Strategies Shouldn't Sabotage Long-Term Flexibility: Saving money this year shouldn't come at the cost of future options or long-term growth. Clarity Creates Confidence: When you understand your numbers and the behaviors behind them, financial anxiety drops and decision-making becomes easier. Topics Discussed: (00:00) Intro: Brad's Background and What He Does (02:43) Why Entrepreneurs Avoid Looking at Their Financial Data (03:32) Fear of Financial Vulnerability and How It Impacts Decision-Making (05:39) The Problem with "Putting the Cart Before the Horse" in Investing (06:09) The Truth About the 4.4% Savings Rate and Why Traditional Budgeting Doesn't Work (09:56) The Danger of Trying to "Out-Earn" Your Problems & What Will Actually Solve Issues (11:09) The 20% Savings Benchmark for Entrepreneurs (12:16) Danielle's Breakdown of the 4 Essential Members of Your "Money Team" (15:16) Rethinking Tax Strategy and Future Flexibility (18:31) Building Launch Plans for Your Children (20:39) HSAs, 401(k)s, IRAs, and 529s: Why Context Matters (21:50) Pitfalls with Traditional Budgets and Using a Better Method of Budgeting (26:33) Promo: Kickstart Accounting's "Check Your Books" Service (27:45) Pitfalls with Traditional Budgets and Using a Better Method of Budgeting (29:44) Final Thoughts on Confidence, Clarity, and Long-Term Planning (21:36) Outro: Like, Share and Subscribe! From utero and into infancy, babies recognize their mother as being essentially one with them. So, being placed in their father's arms is in fact their first introduction to the "other," the outside world. The father will continue this crucial role as mediator and representative to the outside world throughout a boy's childhood. My Parents Died Young: A Wake-Up Call for Men's Longevity & Legacy | Prime Podcast Ep. 349 Title: My Parents Died Young: A Wake-Up Call for Men's Longevity & Legacy | Prime Podcast Ep. 349 Episode Summary: In this deeply personal finale to Men's Health Month, Dr. Skip Wies reflects on the recent loss of both his parents before they reached age 70. This stark reminder of mortality serves as the backdrop for a crucial conversation about longevity. This episode isn't just about adding years to your life; it's about adding life to your years for the sake of your spouse, children, and future grandchildren. Dr. Skip and Dr. Julie debunk the paralyzing myth that health is entirely hereditary using the powerful "recipe analogy" for genetics versus lifestyle. They discuss the massive mindset shift required for men who notoriously wait until their bodies are "broken" to seek help, introducing the concept of viewing your body as "rented" property you must maintain for your loved ones. Learn why reliance on "quick fixes" like peptide therapies is no substitute for the foundational work of nervous system regulation, correcting stress-induced posture, and the discipline needed to create a lasting healthy legacy. In This Episode: * The emotional wake-up call of facing mortality and the desire to see future family milestones. * Epigenetics explained: Why genetics are just ingredients, and your lifestyle is the recipe. * The "Rented Body" mindset shift: Taking care of yourself as a duty to the people you love. * Why men often wait for catastrophic health failures before acting (the car maintenance analogy). * The critical role of nervous system health and posture in long-term vitality. * The danger of using "quick fixes" (pills, injections) to avoid necessary discipline. * How to build a healthy legacy and instill foundational habits in your children. The first day of school is filled with excitement, nerves, and lots of “firsts.” For children, this can be a time of joy and wonder, but also of jitters and uncertainty. For parents, it’s an invitation to lift their children to the Lord in prayer—asking for His protection, wisdom, and presence as they step into a new year. In today’s devotional, Lynette Kittle reminds us that while public prayer in schools has been limited, no one can stop us from praying for our children. Whether they are just beginning kindergarten or navigating high school hallways, we can stand in the gap, asking God to guard their hearts, guide their steps, and let His Word be a lamp to their feet. Main Takeaways God calls parents and caregivers to pray over children as they learn, grow, and face new challenges. No laws or cultural changes can silence prayer—God always hears us. Scripture reminds us that His Word lights our children’s path and anchors their hearts in truth. Praying over our children equips them spiritually as much as new backpacks and pencils prepare them physically. Bible Verse References Matthew 19:14 – Jesus welcomes the little children. Psalm 119:11 – Hiding God’s Word in our hearts. Lamentations 2:19 – Pour out your heart for your children before the Lord. Psalm 119:105 – God’s Word as a lamp and light.
