Southern Baptists have had a longstanding commitment to advocating for the protection of preborn lives and opposing abortion in every form. This is rooted in the biblical revelation that all people are created in God's image and have inherent value. During a recent pro-life advocacy trip to Washington, D.C., Southern Baptist college students, leaders, and pastors joined us for the 2026 March for Life and advocated alongside us on Capitol Hill. On this episode, you'll hear from two individuals involved in that trip, Dr. Dub Oliver, president of Union University, and Jason Marlin, lead pastor of First Baptist Church in Kirksville, Missouri, and an ERLC trustee. Both men reflect on their recent experience at the 53rd annual March for Life and share about the importance of educating and equipping the next generation to engage faithfully on pro-life issues. We are talking about DJs for your Wedding and Reception. What is the best advice for couples getting ready for their wedding and their reception? How should couples approach their conversations with the DJ? What makes good song choices or playlists? We talk about first dances, father-daughter dances, mother-son dances, anniversary dances, cutting-the-cake songs, and slow songs vs. fast songs. And what are the things that couples don't think about? My guest on today's episode is Mike Lazar, a professional DJ, MC, and music director whose journey in music began at the age of twelve, playing drums in church. From there, Mike expanded into guitar, singing, and eventually DJing, launching his own company, Lazar Productions, at just twenty years old. Over time, his work led him into the world of live performance and music production, including opportunities to collaborate with top artists and Grammy- and Emmy-award-winning producers across the country. Today, Mike serves as the Music Director at First Baptist Church of Massillon, works with Rock the House Entertainment, and continues to run his own promotion work part-time. In this conversation, we discuss creativity, calling, and stewarding talent well in both sacred and professional spaces. Whether you are a creative, a leader, or someone navigating multiple vocational lanes, Mike brings thoughtful insight and real-world experience to the table. What does it mean to lead faithfully when change is unavoidable—and grief is real? In this episode, Loren is joined by Rev. Dr. Josh Hayden for a deeply honest conversation about remissioning churches and navigating loss. Drawing from his work with congregations across denominations—and from his own experience of profound personal grief—Josh reflects on what it means to embrace change that is rooted in love, sacrifice, and hope. Rather than treating renewal as a technical fix, the conversation explores remissioning as a discipleship-centered process that requires dying to old versions of ourselves so new life can emerge. Together, Loren and Josh wrestle with fear, resistance to change, the pace of transformation, and why churches often avoid the very practices that form people to live faithfully through loss. Josh Hayden is the cofounder and copresident of `Iwa Collaborative, which helps leaders fly high and and live low as they lead through change processes in their community. He runs remissioning trainings through `Iwa Collaborative across various denominational, non-denominational, and global networks. Hayden is the senior pastor at First Baptist Church in Ashland, Virginia. He has worked and led in nonprofit organizations, church plants, and established churches. He has a doctorate in leadership and organizational change from Duke Divinity School and is the author of Sacred Hope. He serves on the boards of numerous nonprofits, and he and his family live near Richmond, Virginia. Mentioned Resources:
[In collaboration with the News Beat Podcast]Martin Luther King, Jr.'s legacy encompasses so much more than simply his 'I Have a Dream' speech, and his mission is as imperative today as it was then. We republish “MLK: What They Won't Teach in School”—our 2017 inaugural episode—each MLK Day as a reminder of the civil rights leader's lasting impact, the movement's ongoing struggle, and still unrealized goals. Learn some of what the history books left out. Featuring interviews with Pastor Roger C. Williams of the First Baptist Church of Glen Cove, NY and Larry Hamm of the Newark, NJ-based social justice group People's Organization for Progress; original verses performed by hip hop artist Silent Knight; and King's own words, listeners learn about MLK's Poor People's Campaign, which he believed would be his true legacy. More than likely, it was this that got him killed.---

What's actually happening to the church in America and why does it matter beyond Sunday morning? In this episode I'm joined by Ryan Burge, a social scientist who studies religion in the U.S. and brings long-term data, charts, and lived pastoral experience into a conversation often driven by fear or nostalgia. We discuss his book The Vanishing Church, the quiet decline of the moderate church, the rise of polarization inside Christianity, and how broader cultural tribalism has reshaped faith communities. We also explore the growth of the religious “nones,” why church closures are happening steadily but largely unnoticed, and what's lost when the church can no longer function as a space where people learn how to live together across difference.Ryan Burge is professor of practice at the John C. Danforth Center on Religion and Politics at Washington University in St. Louis. Before that he was an associate professor of political science at Eastern Illinois University, and was also the graduate coordinator. He has authored over thirty peer-reviewed articles and book chapters alongside four books about religion and politics in the United States. He has written for the New York Times, POLITICO, and the Wall Street Journal. He has also appeared in an NBC Documentary, on Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, as well as 60 Minutes which called him, “one of the country's leading data analysts on religion and politics.” He served as a pastor in the American Baptist Church for over twenty years, leading First Baptist Church of Mount Vernon, IL for 17.5 years until its closure in July 2024. He has been married to his wife Jacqueline for over seventeen years. They have two boys.Ryan's Book:The Vanishing ChurchRyan's Recommendation:DominionConnect with Joshua: jjohnson@shiftingculturepodcast.comGo to www.shiftingculturepodcast.com to interact and donate. Acts 10 - Pastor John Wilkerson - Sunday Morning, December 28, 2025 by First Baptist Church of Hammond
This notorious VHS tape has taken on a second life on the Internet as a treasured relic of found footage. Recorded live at First Baptist Church in Perrine, Florida (year unknown), LIL MARKIE LIVE IN MIAMI is a rare chance to see Christian entertainer Mark Fox fully embody his iconic Lil Markie character in the flesh. Lil Markie is basically Mr. Fox doing a cartoonish child's voice, which in practice sounds like a combination of TV characters Elmo from Sesame Street and Meatwad from Aqua Teen Hunger Force. As Lil Markie, Mark Fox recorded multiple albums. He is perhaps most known for "Diary of an Unborn Child," a spoken word monologue recorded over jazz piano in which Fox uses the Lil Markie voice to narrate what an unborn child might say to his mommy in the womb before his untimely abortion. But Fox mostly inhabits Lil Markie as an unelected spokesperson for real, living children. In his live special, he takes aim at selfish adult actions that make children sad, mainly divorce, moms going to work, and dads watching too much TV. He advocates for daddies to "date" their daughters and for divorce to be outlawed. He also finds time to monologue extensively about his favorite show Alvin and the Chipmunks, and to sing a song about loving the world in which each verse is a crude racist stereotype of a different race. Ultimately LIL MARKIE LIVE IN MIAMI feels too dark for kids and too uncanny for adults, a perfectly useless piece of family entertainment that alienates Christians of all ages.
