In 1984, Fern was fearful about sending her two eldest children off to junior high. She knew the school would be a battlefield for their hearts and minds. She realized the warfare would be intense and to fight in this battle she needed to invite other moms to pray. She called a mom and asked her to pray with her for their children and school. She grew up with a praying grandma and recognized the blessing of that. She wanted something similar for her kids. In 2015, a precious tourist visiting Valdez left a Moms in Prayer Booklet with her. That started an incredible adventure. Jennifer read the Booklet and started a group that fall. Through the four steps of prayer, Moms in Prayer has taught her to focus on God and His character instead of whatever problem is presenting itself. SCRIPTURES  When Gideon came, behold, a man was telling a dream to his comrade. And he said, “Behold, I dreamed a dream, and behold, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian and came to the tent and struck it so that it fell and turned it upside down, so that the tent lay flat.” And his comrade answered, “This is no other than the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel; God has given into his hand Midian and all the camp.” As soon as Gideon heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation, he worshiped. It was during this time of trying to “let go” a bit that she found Moms in Prayer after hearing Moms in Prayer Founder, Fern Nichols, on the radio. The Lord encouraged her to start a Moms in Prayer group at her sons' school in 2003. She prayed with this group of moms for 17 years. They joined her in covering her boys, their kids and their school community. They lifted their requests to God and saw Him do immeasurably more than they could ask or imagine as He walked with them through a son's illness, Young Life established at the school, and students' hearts turned to Christ. Heidi has come to know the Lord in an amazingly intimate way as He has shown her His love for her boys and that He truly can be trusted above all else. She has been married to Mark, who has filled her days with laughter since 1990. They have three boys in their twenties and two amazing daughters-in-law! After growing up in Minnesota and spending a few years in St. Louis, they have fallen in love with North Carolina. Heidi is looking forward to watching God work as He draws other moms to experience His power, grace and loving acceptance through prayer! She reminds us of the assurance, hope and peace that is found in trusting God to be our Master Builder. Her heart was stirred and now she has been praying in a Moms in Prayer group for 32 years! After serving for 10 years as our Iowa State Coordinator, she now serves as our Heartland Division Coordinator, overseeing seven states. She plans to continue to pray in a group as long as the Lord gives her the physical and mental ability.   Her oldest son battled severe asthma which resulted in a number of emergency room visits and hospitalizations throughout his childhood on up to college. She would battle anxiety and fear whenever he developed a runny nose or cough and a feeling of dread would come over her. Many weeks he would be the one of the four children that were covered in prayer in her Moms in Prayer hour. This brought great peace, hope and strength. God answered so many prayers on his behalf and today he is healthy and his asthma is well controlled. Rachel lives with her husband, Darrel, of 44 years in Sioux Center, Iowa. They have four adult children and the wonderful blessing of being grandpa and grandma to seven grandchildren with number eight due to arrive soon! Debbie Strobel, our Moms in Prayer Arkansas State Coordinator, joins us today. She shares how even in one of the hardest circumstances of her life, God showed Himself as her Comforter and Provider. Her sons were both moving from private to public school that year. She knew they needed much prayer for the transition. God worked miracles that first year and has continued to do so throughout her Moms in Prayer journey. Through Moms in Prayer, she has learned the power of praying in unity with other moms. The women in her group are her closest friends, and ones she knows she can trust with anything. She also learned the power of praying Scripture. Debbie married her college sweetheart, Michael, in 1977. They were married for 44 years until he unexpectedly went to be with the Lord after suffering a heart attack. They raised two wonderful sons who are married to believing women. Preston is an officer in the Coast Guard, and he and his wife made Debbie a first-time grandma in March of 2023 with the birth of Ronan Michael! Grant and his wife live in northwest Arkansas.     “I was sending my boys to junior high, into a battlefield every single day for their minds. Who's going to pray?” Fern Nichols, founder of Moms in Prayer International, walks us through the power of praying together including two key purposes of prayer, why we pray, and the crisis we're in and what to do about it. She also tells us the stories of two of her sons and how God answered prayer for their safety, salvation, and important life decisions. ABOUT OUR GUEST Fern Nichols is a former elementary school teacher and the founder of Moms in Prayer International, a prayer movement that mobilizes women around the world to gather to pray for their children and schools. In 1984, Fern was fearful about sending her two eldest children off to junior high. She knew the school would be a battlefield for their hearts and minds. She realized the warfare would be intense and to fight in this battle she needed to invite other moms to pray. She called a mom and asked her to pray with her for their children and school. Her response was an immediate “yes,” and that was the humble beginning of Moms in Prayer that now spans the USA in every state and is in more than 150 countries. Moms in Prayer is an hour of hope. Moms are discovering that being a part of the Moms in Prayer community is turning their fears to faith. Week after week they are learning to never underestimate the power of their prayers. Fern has traveled to almost every continent in the world speaking, teaching, and training women how to pray effectively. She and her husband Rle have been married 51 years. They were involved with Campus Crusade for Christ (now CRU) for 15 years. He addresses the issue of college students falling away from faith in Christ through a social platform where incoming students can find a local campus ministry or church and connect with other Christian students before getting on campus. ABOUT OUR GUEST As the Director of Ministry Partnerships for Every Student Sent, John Decker and the Campus Renewal team have developed a coalition of major college ministries, youth ministries, Christian schools, and denominations dedicated to making it standard practice in America to connect Christian youth to college ministries and churches before they leave home. New devotional called Sanctuary. My heart's prayer was that I wanted sanctuary from all the noise coming at us in our culture. Worldly pull that's pulling us in another direction. Lead a quiet life (1 Thess 4:11) – what does that look like in our world today? Is it possible to lead a quiet life today?  (Stacy's question to Denise) It's possible with intention, because I think the current of our culture is going to carry us along  one direction if we're not being intentional to swim upstream against the grain of culture. It has to be something we are intentionally pursuing. What can we learn from the topic of sanctuary in the Bible? Every single element that made up the tabernacle and later, the temple, all of it pointed to Christ. Christ is our sanctuary and we can go to Him wherever we are. We can have sanctuary with us wherever we go. Example: At the entrance to the tabernacle, the Levites/Priests had to go through ceremonial washing. Women donated highly polished bronze mirrors. The craftsman melted down the bronze mirrors to make wash basins. When the priest would lean over and wash his hands in the water, he would see his reflection. The wash basin and water reflected Christ and that we can't enter His presence without being washed by Him.   Relinquish worldly mirrors and turn our focus from ourselves to Christ. History of screens – we went from a big screen to television (small screen) in our homes, to the micro-screens in everyone's back pocket that we can take with us wherever we go. On the big and small screens, we're watching actors portray a story, on the micro-screen, we now have become the main character in what has become the reality show of our lives. In many ways these micro screens have become modern day mirrors where we're focusing more and more on ourselves in an unhealthy way. I love the idea of Hebrew women giving their bronze mirrors to Moses, having them melted away, so their focus was then on Christ. What about if you feel like you're failing to lead a quiet life? Ask ourselves, how well are we tethered to people and places, in our homes, in our churches, in our schools? We can easily spend more time talking to people on screen which can lead to our relationships in our homes to atrophy. Being tethered to people and to actual places helps us remain anchored in God's created world rather than man's created meta universe.   Being in the Word with women in our church. Solidarity in being there for a woman who was losing her husband -  Elijah was on the run from a very corrupt, worldly king, he goes to a widow's home in Zarephath. This was going into enemy territory. There had been a famine and widows were considered the poorest of the poor. When Elijah asks for a meal, the widow says all I have left… Elijah said, make me some bread. As long as he stayed as a guest in her home, the flour and oil in the vessels did not run dry. She was an ordinary woman living in a very ungodly culture and yet God used her in such a powerful way. Generations later, when Jesus stepped into the synagogue and read from the scrolls, announced His public ministry by referencing this widow. Someone considered not an influencer, yet Jesus used her story to introduce Himself to the world as the Messiah. These women sitting on the pew supporting their friend who was losing her husband, these women – they're not on staff, they're not considered online influencers, but they have so much influence and purpose in the people they're ministering to in their local church. That's what we need to be inspired by – women like that, more than the influencers we see on our micro screens. We're so enthralled by lifestyles of the rich and famous, like Solomon in the Bible whose wealth was known throughout the kingdom. People heard about his wisdom and his extravagant lifestyle. Queen came and wanted to take a tour of His palace. Today, We tend in our humanness, to be drawn to the fancy, the elite, the powerful, the wealthy. Which tends to get a lot of capital online. In our humanness and in the world we live in, we're so drawn to wealth & extravagance, but If we're going to truly be committed to a quiet life, we need to live a life with open hands and not be consumed with the pursuit of more wealth & more things. It's the pursuit of less. If we could summarize all of Paul's letters, it would be Go saints go, don't quit, no matter how loud the world becomes, there is eternal perspective beyond what we can see and hear with our eyes and our ears. To lead a quiet life is to know that we're saints because Christ has imputed His righteousness to us. And Paul encourages us to go saint go and don't give up! If you hear the verse from Thessalonians, I encourage everyone that leading a quiet life is not about your natural personality, but it's about the spiritual condition of your heart.

    “We need to look to the Lord when life is good and especially when life is impossibly hard.”  What a comfort to know we can always count on the Lord! We are continuing our podcast series “Standing in the Gap” focusing in on some of the amazing intercessors in the Bible. Today Stacy is joined by pastor, teacher and member of the Moms in Prayer International Board of Directors, Bob Arii.  Listen in as Bob shares insights we can learn from King Hezekiah crying out to God in the face of grave danger. ABOUT OUR GUEST: ​Bob Arii is a retired pastor and school science teacher, who continues volunteering at a senior care facility.  He provides spiritual care while also leading Bible studies utilizing musical skills with his voice and guitar, singing hymns as part of their time together.  He leads a weekly men's Bible study in their home with men from the community, and another home group as part of the church they attend.  (Do pastors ever really retire?).  He is passionate about disciples of Christ making disciples of Christ with His love, grace, mercy and peace.   Bob and his wife Carrie just celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary.  They have two boys (now men), one is married.  They have blessed them with two grandchildren, a boy and a girl and off course they make frequent trips to Colorado to see them. SCRIPTURES: Then Hezekiah prayed before the Lord, and said: “O Lord God of Israel, the One who dwells between the cherubim, You are God, You alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth.  Incline Your ear, O Lord, and hear; open Your eyes, O Lord, and see; and hear the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to reproach the living God.  Truly, Lord, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands, and have cast their gods into the fire; for they were not gods, but the work of men's hands—wood and stone.     “Elisha's prayers should make us brave to ask big things that line up with God's will.” We are continuing our podcast series “Standing in the Gap” focusing in on some of the amazing intercessors in the Bible. Today Stacy speaks with Moms in Prayer International Global Translations Coordinator, Kathryn Coffelt.  Listen in as Kathryn shares treasure we can learn from Elisha and also points out the great reward for following his willing example.  “Don't be afraid!” Elisha told him. “For there are more on our side than on theirs!”  Then Elisha prayed, “O Lord, open his eyes and let him see!” The Lord opened the young man's eyes, and when he looked up, he saw that the hillside around Elisha was filled with horses and chariots of fire. As the Aramean army advanced toward him, Elisha prayed, “O Lord, please make them blind.” So the Lord struck them with blindness as Elisha had asked. Then Elisha went out and told them, “You have come the wrong way! This isn't the right city! Follow me, and I will take you to the man you are looking for.” And he led them to the city of Samaria. As soon as they had entered Samaria, Elisha prayed, “O Lord, now open their eyes and let them see.” So the Lord opened their eyes, and they discovered that they were in the middle of Samaria. 2 Kings 6:16-20 (NLT) I searched for a man among them who would build up a wall and stand in the gap before Me for the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found no one.     “Job shined as the world was watching.” Yes he did! Through all of the  suffering, Job remained faithful to the Lord, and he remained faithful as a friend. We are continuing our podcast series “Standing in the Gap” focusing in on some of the amazing intercessors in the Bible. Today Stacy welcomes Roger Rock, a member of the Moms in Prayer International Board of Directors, to the podcast.  Listen in as he shares what we can learn from Job's example that will help us persevere in prayer even in times of suffering.
