When Fern Nichols sent her two oldest sons off to junior high school, her heart was heavy, knowing that they would be facing all kind challenges, choices, and temptations. Her concerns were shared by other mothers and they gathered to pray for her kids. This happened 40 years ago back in 1984. This was the beginning of Moms in Prayer International. Today, I'm chatting with two moms who are part of the Moms in Prayer ministry about how to pray for our kids as they navigate life in a changing youth culture, on this episode of Youth Culture Matters.

I had forgotten how to pray. It was my first Moms In Prayer group and we bowed our heads and hearts before the Lord to lift our children to him. Tears leaked from my eyes as I sat listening to the other women pray for my child. My pulse pounded in tune to my rapid heart rate as I sat humbled before God. I had forgotten how powerful prayer could be and I realized how I had succumbed to a fatalistic view on it. - Jessica Van RoekelSUBSCRIBE to our sister podcasts:The Crosswalk Devotional: https://www.lifeaudio.com/crosswalk-devotional/Your Daily Bible Verse: https://www.lifeaudio.com/your-daily-bible-verse/ Discover more Christian podcasts at lifeaudio.com and inquire about advertising opportunities at lifeaudio.com/contact-us.

This is an encouraging conversation about prayer, keeping God close in our day to day life, our teen's faith, and more. It was so good to sit down with Freyda Smith, who is a friend and fellow mom that always encourages and steers me straight to God. She lives in Winter Garden, FL with her husband of 20 years, and their three children 18,16, and 11. She is a licensed Realtor, and has been practicing for 18 years. When she isn't running the children to and from school, you can find her on a ball field cheering her kids' baseball, or softball teams. Her children attend a local Christian school and she stays active there as well as leading Moms In Prayer. She thrives on having God at the center of everything she does, so she feels balanced and finds great peace attending church, finding a safe place with her Bible study group of 11 years, and committing to show up with her workout group of 7 years. From Freyda, “God called me to Moms In Prayer. No doubt about it. I was searching for something to encourage other moms at school. I have an amazing group of moms I've been doing bible study with for 8 years and I met other moms that I knew could really benefit from that same type of community fellowship. I shared this with a school/baseball mom/friend who had just recently moved to Maitland and her kids were now enrolled at Orangewood Christian. She invited me to attend their MIP meeting and that summer I spoke with our elementary school principal and by the fall we had the green light to begin meeting at First Baptist Church in Winter Garden's basement. So many women hungry for fellowship came and they all had the same goal, to trade in their fear and anxiety about their children for the freedom that comes from prayers covered by the blood of Jesus. I came to have a personal relationship with Jesus at about the age of 9. My family moved to Florida from Puerto Rico and our neighbors at the time invited us to church. This small act set ablaze in my heart a fire for God and it spread to my entire nuclear family. We've all been Christ followers since then and I pray to ensure that legacy of Christ-followers for generations to come.” Challenge: Use one of Freyda's tips this week to spend more time this week with God. “Instead of sending your kids off to college alone, they can actually meet other Christian incoming students and leaders months before they land on campus.” Today we talk with John Decker, Director of Ministry Partnerships for Every Student Sent. He addresses the issue of college students falling away from faith in Christ through a social platform where incoming students can find a local campus ministry or church and connect with other Christian students before getting on campus. ABOUT OUR GUEST As the Director of Ministry Partnerships for Every Student Sent, John Decker and the Campus Renewal team have developed a coalition of major college ministries, youth ministries, Christian schools, and denominations dedicated to making it standard practice in America to connect Christian youth to college ministries and churches before they leave home. This has been shown effective to reverse the 70% college faith drop-off and create resilient disciples who learn to multiply.   John received a BS from Syracuse University and SUNY College of Environmental Science and worked for 24 years in the US and abroad in business development for Lockheed Martin and Philips. He planted an Intervarsity Christian Fellowship chapter at Syracuse and while developing the college transition ministry, also established a branch of College Assistance Plus to help Christian families and financial advisors understand the business of college, negotiate lower tuition, minimize debt, and find the right career. John is blessed with a wonderful wife of 43 years, three children, and eight grandkids who all get together often at their Syracuse, New York home. You can reach him at john.decker@campusrenewal.org. “Christ is our sanctuary and we can go to Him wherever we are.” Today Stacy talks with author, speaker, and teacher, Denise Hughes, about cultivating a quiet heart in a noisy and demanding world. Listen in as she walks us through examples of sanctuary in the Bible and where to be cautious in our online culture that could draw us away from closeness with God and the ones we love.   SCRIPTURES Make it your goal to live a quiet life, minding your own business and working with your hands, just as we instructed you before. Then people who are not believers will respect the way you live, and you will not need to depend on others. 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12 NLT   They made the bronze basin and its bronze stand from the mirrors of the women who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting. Exodus 38:8 NIV   Then the word of the LORD came to him: “Go at once to Zarephath in the region of Sidon and stay there. I have directed a widow there to supply you with food.” So he went to Zarephath. When he came to the town gate, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and asked, “Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink?” As she was going to get it, he called, “And bring me, please, a piece of bread.” “As surely as the LORD your God lives,” she replied, “I don't have any bread—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it—and die.” Elijah said to her, “Don't be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the LORD sends rain on the land.'” 1 Kings 17:8-14 NIV   But He said, “Truly I say to you, no prophet is welcome in his hometown. But I say to you in truth, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months, when a severe famine came over all the land; and yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.” Luke 4:24-26 NASB   LINKS   Denise Hughes website   BOOKS   Sanctuary Deeper Waters   MOMS IN PRAYER ·       New to Moms in Prayer? How to get started ·       Moms in Prayer Shop ·       Support Our Mission ABOUT OUR GUEST Denise J. Hughes is a teacher at heart. She connects with women through inspiring stories and biblically-based messages that meet women right where they're at in everyday life. Her newest book Sanctuary is a 31-day devotional that helps women find true peace among the noise, busyness, and pressures of life. With an M.A. in English, Denise has taught college composition and she currently writes for the First 5 app by Proverbs 31 Ministries. Denise lives with her husband and three kids in North Carolina, where she always finds time for old books, peach tea, and a good football game.     Extra Notes: 2 Quotes:  Christ is our sanctuary and we can go to Him wherever we are.   Being tethered to people and to actual places helps us remain anchored in God's created world rather than man's created meta-universe.    Has been a mom for more than 27 years; 3 children – 27, 19, 18. New devotional called Sanctuary. My heart's prayer was that I wanted sanctuary from all the noise coming at us in our culture. Worldly pull that's pulling us in another direction. Lead a quiet life (1 Thess 4:11) – what does that look like in our world today? Is it possible to lead a quiet life today?  (Stacy's question to Denise) It's possible with intention, because I think the current of our culture is going to carry us along  one direction if we're not being intentional to swim upstream against the grain of culture. It has to be something we are intentionally pursuing. What can we learn from the topic of sanctuary in the Bible? Every single element that made up the tabernacle and later, the temple, all of it pointed to Christ. Christ is our sanctuary and we can go to Him wherever we are. We can have sanctuary with us wherever we go. Example: At the entrance to the tabernacle, the Levites/Priests had to go through ceremonial washing. Women donated highly polished bronze mirrors. The craftsman melted down the bronze mirrors to make wash basins. When the priest would lean over and wash his hands in the water, he would see his reflection. The wash basin and water reflected Christ and that we can't enter His presence without being washed by Him.   Relinquish worldly mirrors and turn our focus from ourselves to Christ. History of screens – we went from a big screen to television (small screen) in our homes, to the micro-screens in everyone's back pocket that we can take with us wherever we go. On the big and small screens, we're watching actors portray a story, on the micro-screen, we now have become the main character in what has become the reality show of our lives. In many ways these micro screens have become modern day mirrors where we're focusing more and more on ourselves in an unhealthy way. I love the idea of Hebrew women giving their bronze mirrors to Moses, having them melted away, so their focus was then on Christ. What about if you feel like you're failing to lead a quiet life? Ask ourselves, how well are we tethered to people and places, in our homes, in our churches, in our schools? We can easily spend more time talking to people on screen which can lead to our relationships in our homes to atrophy. Being tethered to people and to actual places helps us remain anchored in God's created world rather than man's created meta universe.   Being in the Word with women in our church. Solidarity in being there for a woman who was losing her husband -  Elijah was on the run from a very corrupt, worldly king, he goes to a widow's home in Zarephath. This was going into enemy territory. There had been a famine and widows were considered the poorest of the poor. When Elijah asks for a meal, the widow says all I have left… Elijah said, make me some bread. As long as he stayed as a guest in her home, the flour and oil in the vessels did not run dry. She was an ordinary woman living in a very ungodly culture and yet God used her in such a powerful way. Generations later, when Jesus stepped into the synagogue and read from the scrolls, announced His public ministry by referencing this widow. Someone considered not an influencer, yet Jesus used her story to introduce Himself to the world as the Messiah. These women sitting on the pew supporting their friend who was losing her husband, these women – they're not on staff, they're not considered online influencers, but they have so much influence and purpose in the people they're ministering to in their local church. That's what we need to be inspired by – women like that, more than the influencers we see on our micro screens. We're so enthralled by lifestyles of the rich and famous, like Solomon in the Bible whose wealth was known throughout the kingdom. People heard about his wisdom and his extravagant lifestyle. Queen came and wanted to take a tour of His palace. Today, We tend in our humanness, to be drawn to the fancy, the elite, the powerful, the wealthy. Which tends to get a lot of capital online. In our humanness and in the world we live in, we're so drawn to wealth & extravagance, but If we're going to truly be committed to a quiet life, we need to live a life with open hands and not be consumed with the pursuit of more wealth & more things. It's the pursuit of less. If we could summarize all of Paul's letters, it would be Go saints go, don't quit, no matter how loud the world becomes, there is eternal perspective beyond what we can see and hear with our eyes and our ears. To lead a quiet life is to know that we're saints because Christ has imputed His righteousness to us. And Paul encourages us to go saint go and don't give up! If you hear the verse from Thessalonians, I encourage everyone that leading a quiet life is not about your natural personality, but it's about the spiritual condition of your heart.

“Don't give up on your loved ones; keep praying until God moves.” Why?  Because God moves through the prayers of His people! Today we begin our new podcast series called “Standing in the Gap” focusing in on some of the amazing intercessors in the Bible.  This week, Stacy welcomes Bunmi Peters to the podcast.  Bunmi has been in Moms in Prayer for decades and she has also served many years on the Moms in Prayer International Board of Directors. Listen in as Bumni shares treasure that we can learn from Abraham, treasure that will inspire us to pray with boldness. ABOUT OUR GUEST: Bunmi Peters has been involved in Moms In Prayer for decades and considers it the most rewarding ministry.  She has been married to Tolu for 36 years and they have three grown children and four grandchildren; one is waiting in heaven for them. She has also served for nearly a decade on the Moms in Prayer International Board of Directors.  Bunmi has seenmany miraculous answers to prayer from the time when she was taught to pray by her parents as a young child to today.  She and her husband live in beautiful Tennessee.  SCRIPTURES: Abraham approached him and said, “Will you sweep away both the righteous and the wicked? Suppose you find fifty righteous people living there in the city—will you still sweep it away and not spare it for their sakes? Surely you wouldn't do such a thing, destroying the righteous along with the wicked. Why, you would be treating the righteous and the wicked exactly the same! Surely you wouldn't do that! Should not the Judge of all the earth do what is right?” And the Lord replied, “If I find fifty righteous people in Sodom, I will spare the entire city for their sake.” Genesis 18:23-26 (NLT) I searched for a man among them who would build up a wall and stand in the gap before Me for the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found no one. Ezekiel 22:30 (NIV) Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” Romans 4:18 (NIV) Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Romans 12:1 (NIV) Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Galatians 5:25 (NIV) LINKS: MOMS IN PRAYER New to Moms in Prayer? I had forgotten how to pray. It was my first Moms In Prayer group and we bowed our heads and hearts before the Lord to lift our children to him. Tears leaked from my eyes as I sat listening to the other women pray for my child. My pulse pounded in tune to my rapid heart rate as I sat humbled before God. I had forgotten how powerful prayer could be and I realized how I had succumbed to a fatalistic view on it. - Jessica Van RoekelSUBSCRIBE to our sister podcasts:The Crosswalk Devotional: https://www.lifeaudio.com/crosswalk-devotional/Your Daily Bible Verse: https://www.lifeaudio.com/your-daily-bible-verse/

Today's guest is someone I'm so glad to have share her story and her ministry on the podcast. Jodie Berndt is the author of the Praying the Scriptures for Your Children series and has impacted so many parents' prayer lives--including mine! Her book, Praying the Scriptures for Your Adult Children, was so impactful for me that I bought one for every close friend and family member with adult children. Jodie shares how she first learned about praying the scriptures for her children at Moms in Prayer and how those prayers were instrumental in changing the mood in her home and changing her children's lives. She has some creative ways she's developed to pray for your own kids and I'm planning on implementing a few for my children and even my grandson. I share a little during this episode about how her book influenced me to write a prayer for my daughter's future husband and how God answered that prayer in an amazing way. Jodie has so much great wisdom and practical tips that I know you'll be better equipped to pray for your children no matter how old they are.

In 1984, Fern Nichols was fearful about sending her two eldest children off to junior high. Realizing that the spiritual warfare would be intense, she asked another mother to pray with her for their kids' protection. That was the humble beginning of Moms in Prayer International, a ministry which now has groups in all 50 states and 140 countries worldwide. On today's edition of Family Talk, Fern compares the efforts of the four friends in the book of Mark, chapter two, who opened a hole in the roof to get a paralyzed man to Jesus. Susan's 15 year old son Josh was crushed in an ATV accident just days before Christmas. Medical help may have been far away, but God was not. Susan shares how God prepared her for this event, how her family was prompted to pray, the miracles that would follow, and how it led her to get involved with Moms in Prayer, and ultimately, with the Open Eyes ministry.   A former Registered Nurse, Susan Younis has been an Area Coordinator for Moms in Prayer for 3 years and leading Moms in Prayer groups for 7 years. She is also working with a beautiful ministry called Open Eyes as a Donor Ambassador.   Susan shares as she reflects back to attending her first prayer group solo as Josh was healing:   "The takeaway is to say yes when He (God) calls you to something. I love what Charles Stanley says, 'Obedience always brings blessings.' It's scary but I want to be where God wants me to be. On our journey He writes our story, He loves us, and has good plans for us. Sometimes it is hard to step out of that boat, but when you do, it honors God. It will bless you and you'll be a blessing to other people." - Susan Younis   1 John 5:13-15 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.   Thank you Susan, for sharing this beautiful testimony with us, and for your service with Moms in Prayer and with Open Eyes as well!  You are a blessing to me and to so many others!   Moms In Prayer links: https://momsinprayer.org/ https://www.instagram.com/momsinprayer/?hl=en   Open Eyes Global Ministry: https://openeyes.net/   Bible Study Susan referenced: https://www.bsfinternational.org/

Hey Mama who may believe you're the only lonely mom on the planet. If you're a lonely mom, you're not alone. 51% of moms report feeling lonely. The truth is, you have lots of company. Many moms feel just like you. Before we dig into what you can do about Mom Loneliness, let's explore Why you need mom friends. Your “why” will help you make adjustments in your life. Your why will help you take action steps even when you've got more than enough on your mom plate and might just feel like giving up.  Here are 5 Reasons Why You Need Good Mom Friends1.  The MomLife can feel all consuming. Mom friends can help you feel like you again, like you have an identity beyond being a mom. 2.  When we have a mom friend or two, we have a sense of belonging. 3.  Other moms are a source of knowledge and support – whether we are caring for our firstborn baby or kids who have left the nest.4.  Fellow moms help us get out of our own heads. When we gather, we have an opportunity to air out our thoughts, be honest, vulnerable, and authentic. 5. Mom friends infuse a little fun into our busy lives. And by the way, all the whys above are not only why YOU need mom friends, but why THEY need you too. So How can you make mom friends? Well I suggest you start with a vision for what you want. What do you need? Are you looking for a group? Just one friend you can have coffee with? Do you need some inspiration or motivation, something in common to share with other moms? Take a few minutes to really imagine what you want. Visualize – we can't move toward something we can't see or articulate. Close your eyes for a couple of minutes and imagine a friend scene or two. Who are you with? What are you doing? Are you in a coffee shop? Library? Class? Use your senses – breathe in the atmosphere. Notice the feelings, colors, scenes. When you finish your visualization, write down what you observed.Want to take it one step further? Do a friend vision board. Put together words and pictures digitally that depict what you imagine as your ideal friend situation on Google Jamboard. Print it out and keep it in front of you. Of course, you don't have to do a visualization or vision board in order to make friends. But it is really important for us to know what it is we truly desire so when we fulfill that desire, we know it. Once you've come up with an idea of what you'd like your friendships to look like, it's time to talk about action. What can you actually do to make new friends? Well, here are some ideas. 1.  Look around you - Maybe there's a neighbor, mom at drop-off, fellow churchgoer you see and wave to from time to time that could be a friend. Strike up a conversation. 2.  Check out local community bulletin boards online or in local libraries, churches, schools, gyms. Once you start looking, you'll find there are events and happenings in your community you didn't know about. 3.  Take a class or join a special interest group - running, pickleball, tennis, crafts, painting, writing. Once you're involved, engage. Look for a friendly face and start up a conversation. 4.  Join a Moms In Prayer group (if you're a prayer…or would like to be). This was a life-changer for me. This is a worldwide organization, with groups run locally by mothers who gather once a week for an hour of prayer for their children and schools. 5.  Be the mom you're looking for and start a group of your own.

Will he keep putting them off?  I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?” John 16:33 (NIV) “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. When my kids were little and I was deep in the diapers and runny nose stage, I used to think "Just a few more years and they'll go to school and I can catch a break!" Fast forward a few years and woohoo... they started school! But the peace I thought I was going to find, sadly eluded me. The break I thought I was catching, turned immediately into worry. Are they going to be ok? Will they make friends? Will the teachers understand them? The stress of the unknown was even worse than all the maintenance and upkeep! If this sounds like you, you are not alone. Parents everywhere, especially moms, can have as rough a time with school as their kiddos do. Thankfully, there is a ministry with chapters all over Georgia - our whole country, actually - dedicated to helping anxious moms by covering our schools in prayer. Candy Barnett, with Moms In Prayer, talked with me about how this ministry grew out of one mom's feeling she needed to cover her middle schooler in prayer. She joined with other like-minded moms to form a weekly prayer group. Today, thousands of moms meet weekly to pray for schools - the children, teachers, administrators and their families - in order to blanket them with God's love, peace and hope. Go  "on-air" with Jules and watch the interview with Candy Barnett. To learn more about Moms In Prayer, give a listen below to my full podcast interview with Candy Barnett.
