University of California system is considering adding a new admissions requirement, something they haven't done in 20-years. A new proposal adds "ethnic studies" to the U-C's designated rundown of high school courses for incoming freshmen, riding on the heels of a new state law requiring ethnic studies to be a California high school graduation requirement. However critics warn it promotes a "liberated" curriculum that's openly anti semitic.
Spanning six states, eight years and 50+ indictments, “Operation Varsity Blues” was one of 2019's most talked-about scandals. The FBI investigation exposed a scheme in which CEOs, Hollywood celebrities and wealthy parents conspired to bribe students' ways into top universities, revealing an admissions system rife with corruption and inequality. After UCLA and UC Berkeley were named in the indictment, the California State Auditor launched a review into the UC's admissions practices. UC Santa Barbara was one of four campuses found to have inappropriately admitted students – including 22 applicants who posed as student athletes with the help of coaches and campus personnel. For today's episode, we're joined by Jorge Mercado, a tech editor at the Pacific Coast Business Times who served as the editor in chief of the Daily Nexus from 2018-2019. The former sports editor helps us break down the audit, the relationship between donors and athletic programs, and how the UC can improve going forward. Did you know that the University of California system will start accepting applications on November 1 and stop accepting them on November 30? If so, congratulations--you have at least one of the basics covered. But if you haven't sat down to fill out the actual UC application, you may not be aware that it generates a lot of student (and parent!) questions. In this week's episode, my California-based colleague, Steve Brennan, is going to answer as many of them as he can in the first two show segments. In addition, College Coach finance expert (and ROTC mom) Laurie Peltier will join us to talk all things ROTC.
