In this episode we travel to Westel, Tennessee, home to fiddle maker Jean Horner. For more than seventy years, Horner built instruments that traveled across the country—Carnegie Hall to California, the Grand Ole Opry to the Smithsonian. Two factors shaped Horner's fiddles. The first was his deep roots in the Cumberland Plateau. The second? His fascination with great Italian violin makers of the 17th and 18th centuries. Jean died this past January at age 91, an acknowledged master of his craft. Reporter Lisa Coffman interviewed him at his workshop in 2023. Recently, she attended his memorial service in Westel, and brings us this story of how he came to be known as the Stradivari of the Cumberlands. All fiddle tunes in this piece are played on Jean Horner fiddles.

Welcome to Paranormal Spectrum, where we illuminate the enigmatic corners of the supernatural world. I'm your host, Barnaby Jones, and today we have a very special guest joining us:Zach Bales has had an interest in the paranormal for as long as he can remember. Growing up in rural Kentucky in the foothills of Appalachia, Bales spent much of his youth fascinated by tales of ghosts, monsters, and “little green men.” His interest in the paranormal has taken him to the far corners of the North American continent and to twenty-eight countries on five continents.Over the years, Bales has come face to face with many of Earth's most compelling mysteries—from the jungles of Latin America to the antique lands of Northern Africa, from the moors of England and Scotland to the cradle of civilization in the Middle East. Bales documented many of these encounters in his five books—The Amateur's Guide to Ghost Hunting, The Expert's Guide to Ghost Hunting, The Bigfooter's Atlas, The UFO Chaser's Atlas, and The Atlas of the Unexplained: Mothman. In December 2020, The Bigfooter's Atlas was recognized as the “Book of the Year” by the International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, Maine. Bales' fascination with folklore and storytelling led him to pursue a career in the study of English language and literature. After obtaining a BA from Eastern Kentucky University and an MA from the University of the Cumberlands, Bales sought a position in Secondary English Education, where he has spent the better part of two decades. In October 2020, Bales was recognized as the Kentucky Teacher of the Week. Bales is a regular on the convention and festival circuit, appearing alongside his wife, Melissa, at events throughout the United States. Bales has been featured in television and film as well as on a number of nationally syndicated radio programs. In 2022, Bales opened Paranormal Roadtripper's Nightmare Gallery in Somerset, Kentucky, which features his collection of curiosities—a menagerie of the unusual, the unexplained, and the otherworldly—as well as a one-of-a-kind gift shop. In 2024, the Nightmare Gallery doubled in size, making it one of the largest exhibits of its kind anywhere in the world.Click that play button, and let's unravel the mysteries of the UNTOLD! Be Ready At All TimesLuke 12:40 “So keep being alert and ready at all times. For I promise you that the Son of Man will surprise you and appear when you don't expect him.”This verse reminded me of a conversation I had with my confirmation kids one year when I was teaching the confirmation class. We were talking about confession and why it is so important to go to confession. We were also talking about how God always forgives us when we ask for forgiveness. No matter what we have done or how long ago it was. The kids were asking, what if someone sinned their whole life, they did really bad things, and then on their deathbed, they asked for forgiveness? Would God forgive them? I said yes. They said that didn't seem fair. Then I asked them, “If someone was sinning their whole life. If they did one bad thing after another. Did they think that person would actually ask for forgiveness in the end?” They said probably not. The thing about sin is that it drives a wedge between you and the Lord. It fractures your relationship. The more you sin, the further away you feel. You might start off with a plan to sin as much as you like because you know that at any point, you can ask God for forgiveness, and He will give it to you. And yet, the more you sin, the more you harden your heart. By the time you get to the end of your life, you don't care if God forgives you because you are so far away from Him, you forget what it is like to feel His love. This verse is telling us to be alert and ready at all times. I think we can all slip into a comfortable feeling where we know we may need to go to confession at some point, but it's okay to put it off a bit. Or we know we need to give something up or stop doing something, and yet we figure there is always tomorrow. Guess what? There might not be tomorrow. None of us know the day and the time that we will die. None of us know when the Son of Man will return. What the Bible tells us in more than one place is that it will be when we least expect it. Today's verse says, “For I promise you that the Son of Man will surprise you and appear when you don't expect him.”It doesn't say you might be surprised, or I think the Son of Man's coming might be a surprise. It says, “For I promise you that the Son of Man will surprise you and appear when you don't expect him.” This is a promise. Jesus is coming, and we have no idea when, but we do know that we won't expect it. This means we should always be ready for it. We shouldn't put things off until tomorrow. If we truly lived this way, I believe our lives would be transformed!Imagine a life where you didn't procrastinate. Where you didn't put off calling that person you have been meaning to call but haven't. Imagine a world where you didn't hold a grudge because if you did, it meant God was going to hold a grudge against you. You do know that is what the Bible says, right? Do you know that is what it says in the prayer Jesus taught us to say? “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” God is going to forgive us to the same extent that we forgive others. Learning that truly was life-changing for me.As soon as I learned that, I made a decision to learn how to let things go. I made a decision to no longer stay or hold onto a grudge. Whatever it is that someone did to me, it is not worth my eternal salvation. Forgiveness is not easy, especially if someone hurt us deeply. However, missing out on eternal salvation or spending eternity in hell because of that unforgiveness would be a lot harder. I have heard stories of people going to hell because of unforgiveness in their hearts, and I don't want that to be me.Today's verse is a great reminder not only of how we should live our lives in order to get into heaven, but it is a good reminder that none of us know when we will leave this earth. It is a good reminder to not leave things unsaid and not wait for our loved ones to make the first move. What if we all lived our lives like this was our last day on earth? What would our day look like? What would our lives look like? How much more fully would we live our lives if we knew we wouldn't see our loved ones again?Yesterday was Thanksgiving and I love Thanksgiving. It is one of best holidays with my family. My siblings and I gather at my mom and dad's house the day before to help cut up the veggies and make all the desserts. It is a time of so much fun, love, and laughter. Then we get together on Thanksgiving and eat amazing food and talk, laugh and usually play games or watch movies. I love it. It is probably my favorite holiday. I was really looking forward to it.Wednesday night, one of my sons got in trouble at the mall. We were unsure what that meant for his job as he works at the mall. Thursday morning, he was really upset and wanted to go for a bike ride, and we said no because it was pouring rain out. He went anyway. Then Tony and I fought about whether we should go to CT or not while he was out on his bike ride. I decided I didn't want to miss out on my favorite holiday with my family, and I left.I was praying with the Lord while I drove, and he put on my heart that I should be home with Tony and Ryan. They were both upset, and I wouldn't have any fun at my mom's if I was thinking about them. Also, I really wanted to be there for them to support them. So, instead, I stopped and got Tony's favorite drink, a French Vanilla cappuccino, and some soda for the boys at Cumberlands and some pizza at Dominoes since I didn't have Thanksgiving food to cook at home, and we just chilled out for the day. Sam watched a movie with us, which doesn't happen much anymore, and it was a good day.The reason I tell you this is because, in the past, I would have just gone to CT and spent the time with my mom and dad and then come home still angry at the fight I had with Tony. God has been working on my heart, though, and I knew I wanted to be there with Tony to talk things out and not stew over anything we might have said to one another. I might have started learning how to forgive because of fear of not being forgiven by the Lord, but now I forgive because it provides a freedom that I never knew before.Today's verse reminds us that we need to be ready. When our time is up, our time is up. Most of the time, there are no second chances. This verse is a gift to us. It is reminding us that we can strive to live each day like it is our last and then we will be ready for the Lord when He comes. We all know Jesus is coming back to judge the living and the dead. This verse promises us that we won't know when until He gets here. So, knowing that, what are were going to do about it? Are you going to keep putting things off, or are we going live more intentionally and fully today!Dear heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those listening today. Lord, we want to live more fully, please help us. We want to be able to forgive. Please help us. We want to not procrastinate and we want to say what is on our mind when it is on our mind. Please help us! Lord, we are a mess and we need your help. Put on our hearts any ways in which we need to be ready for your coming. Change us Lord. Mold our hearts to be one with your heart! We love you, Lord, and we ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus's holy name, Amen!Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus. I look forward to meeting you here again on Monday. Remember, Jesus loves you just as you are, and so do I! Have a blessed day!Today's Word from the Lord was received in May 2024 by a member of my Catholic Charismatic Prayer Group. If you have any questions about the prayer group, these words, or how to join us for a meeting, please email CatholicCharismaticPrayerGroup@gmail.com. Today's Word from the Lord is, “We're all at different places. Some just sit on the shore and look at it and think it's beautiful, but they're afraid to go in. Some go in and learn how to maneuver in it, learning how to swim or stay afloat in that water. Then there are others who've gone on, and they're now much more at ease in that water. CTL Script/ Top Stories of September 17th Publish Date: September 17th From the Ingles Studio Welcome to the Award-Winning Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast Today is Tuesday, September 17th and Happy heavenly Birthday to Hank Williams ***09.17.24 – BIRTHDAY – HANK WILLIAMS*** I'm Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cherokee is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Canton Approves New Zoning Map Canton Applying for Grant for Pedestrian Bridge Reinhardt Falters on the Road Plus, Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on fiber. We'll have all this and more coming up on the Cherokee Tribune-Ledger Podcast, and if you're looking for Community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! Commercial: CU of GA (FREE CHECKING) STORY 1: Canton Approves New Zoning Map The city of Canton has adopted a new zoning map, aimed at simplifying the zoning classifications following unanimous approval by the City Council on September 12. The update reflects changes made in April, which included the removal of several zoning categories to streamline the process. In August, city staff presented the map, followed by a public hearing on August 15 to gather resident feedback. Property owners were notified and given the chance to request changes; ten of these requests were incorporated into the final map. Key zoning districts now include Central Business District, General Commercial, Light Industrial, and various residential and mixed-use categories. The map also designates special use zones for governmental and quasi-governmental facilities. This effort was led by Community Development Director Kevin Turner and his team, who worked closely with residents to address concerns. STORY 2: Canton Applying for Grant for Pedestrian Bridge The Canton City Council has approved a resolution to apply for a Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Program Grant for the $6.1 million River Mill Pedestrian Bridge project, which aims to connect The Mill on Etowah to the Etowah trail network. The project includes a pedestrian bridge, put-in/take-out area for kayaking, and a paved trail, with a projected budget of $6,165,938.40. Funding will come from the grant, Special Purpose Local Options Sales Tax, and impact fees. The bridge, designed with a concrete deck and prefab steel truss, is expected to start construction in mid to late 2025 and have a lifespan of over 75 years. The City also awarded a contract for the trail design to integrate with the bridge, with construction aligning for 2025. STORY 3: Reinhardt Falters on the Road Reinhardt University's football team faced a tough defeat against Southeastern, losing 28-10 during a non-conference game in Lakeland, Florida. The Eagles, now 1-2, initially took the lead but failed to score in the second half due to costly special teams errors. The game was part of a challenging road trip, and despite a strong start, Reinhardt's mistakes, including a blocked punt returned for a touchdown, proved detrimental. Quarterback Stephin Craig completed 14 of 32 passes for 132 yards, with the team struggling in execution. The Eagles will host Cumberlands next Saturday at Ken White Field before continuing their schedule against Georgetown and Pikeville. Coach James Miller expressed frustration but emphasized the need to improve and prepare for upcoming challenges. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. Back in a moment Break: DRAKE (CHEROKEE) STORY 4: Public Hearing Set for Cherokee's Proposed $415M Budget The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners is set to hold a public hearing today to gather resident input on the proposed $415.7 million budget for fiscal year 2025. The budget presentation will start at 6 p.m. at Cherokee Hall, Cherokee County Conference Center, followed by the hearing. The proposed budget allocates 54.1% to public safety, 20.5% to judicial services, and 15.3% to general administration, among other areas. Commissioners will review the budget for adoption during their regular meeting on October 1. Residents can view the budget details online for further information. STORY 5: Burt Jones Cleared of Criminal Intent Following 2020 Presidential Election Lt. Gov. Burt Jones has been exonerated by the Prosecuting Attorneys' Council of Georgia after an investigation into his role as an alternate elector following the 2020 presidential election. Jones, then a Republican state senator, was part of a group that voted to cast Georgia's electoral votes for Donald Trump despite Joe Biden's victory in the state. The investigation, led by Pete Skandalakis after Fulton County DA Fani Willis was disqualified due to a conflict of interest, found no criminal intent in Jones' actions. The findings indicated that Jones acted on legal advice to preserve potential legal remedies for Trump amid election disputes. Despite other GOP electors facing indictments, no charges were brought against Jones, who used the same defense during his 2022 campaign for lieutenant governor. In the heart of Appalachia, a legend looms as large as the mountains themselves. Today, we tell the story of John Wesley Wright.Born in the Elkhorn Valley of Kentucky, John Wright's life was a mix of adventure, violence, and survival. From his early days as a Confederate soldier making a daring escape from Union forces, Wright's exploits during the Civil War set the stage for his legendary status. But his story doesn't end with the war. Wright's journey led him to the circus spotlight alongside his uncle, the famed Kentucky Giant, Martin Van Buren Bates, to the shadowy world of manhunting with the Pinkerton and Baldwin-Felts detective agencies. As a lawman, Wright's reputation for meting out justice was as formidable as his skills with a gun, earning him the nicknames "Bad John” and “Devil John” from those outlaws he pursued and captured. But his life was not solely defined by bullets and bravado. Wright's complex personal life, fathering over 30 children with multiple women, paints a portrait of a man as multifaceted as the hills he called home.Join us as we explore John Wright's story, from his encounters with outlaws and feudists to his final days, when he sought redemption and left his devilish nickname behind. It's a journey through Appalachia's past that's as captivating as the landscape itself. Ryan Scott is the Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwestern Indiana. He can be described as goal-driven, servant-led, and incredibly relentless in his pursuit to fight for ALL kids! Prior to coming on board BBBS, Ryan spent 16 years in public education, where he worked tirelessly to preach the gospel of connection before content and that we had a connection, not entirely an academic gap. Ryan received his undergraduate degree from Murray State University and two master's degrees from The University of the Cumberlands. “Thousands of research studies have proven that positive, nurturing, supportive relationships are the lifeblood of a successful, happy life. Connecting children with role-models who can provide these critical elements has the ability to literally change the direction of a kids' life,” says Ryan. “In a world where hope is often lacking among our most vulnerable youth, one positive role model can provide the essential support needed to persevere through life. Life is easily the hardest thing we ever have to do, but having someone walking beside you makes it 10x easier.” In this episode, you will hear Ryan speak to the "why" behind the podcast and what you can expect to hear on future episodes! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/bigedidea/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/bigedidea/support

This episode is a replay from an episode aired in November 2021. We wanted to replay this in honor of Mental Health Awareness month. Career and Technical Education is all about helping students find a meaningful and fulfilling career pathway that aligns with their skills and passions. But before students can discover what they want to do with their lives, they need to discover who they are. That is where social-emotional learning comes into play. Dr. Damien Sweeney is a social-emotional learning expert and currently serves as the Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at the Kentucky Department of Education. Sweeney is also an adjunct professor at the University of the Cumberlands and Spalding University. With a passion for change agency and social justice, Dr. Sweeney has served as a special education teacher, English teacher and high school counselor in Jefferson County Public Schools (Louisville, KY). Sweeney holds a Master's in Teaching Special Education and Secondary English from Bellarmine University along with a Master's in Education for School Counseling and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Louisville. In short, he's been in your shoes and knows the burdens you educators carry. In this episode, we sat down with Damien to learn about what social-emotional learning is, why it matters, and why CTE classrooms are perfectly poised to help students find a place to belong and discover who they are. Damien also helped us discover how, as adults and educators, we can dive into our own journeys of social-emotional learning, and why educators need to fill up their cup before they can give to their students. If you or your students are feeling lost, overwhelmed, underappreciated, or misunderstood, this episode will bring insight and direction to help you pave a path forward. Tori starts off the latest megasode with several movie references and the Old Joliet Prison. Yet another prison with deplorable conditions, ghosts, and movie scenes. Also, they buried limbs in the cemetery there. Krysti comes around with Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. Add in a vampire, a battle site, a horny gravesite, and you want ghosts? Because that's how you get ghosts. Chuck comes round with a Central American cryptid, the mysterious Aluxes, or the little people of Mexico. These Mayan legends have stuck around to this day. Malcolm brings us to Scotland and the Culloden Battlefield. The last stand of the Jacobites against the British Duke of Cumberlands troops. A series of poor tactical choices and being outgunned made this the site of an absolute massacre. There seems to be an echo of this battle that ripples through every year on the anniversary. Happy bday to Tori, she got the gamut of fun stories right up her alley for this episode. Our Sources: Tremeear J. In: Illinois Haunted Route 66. Charleston, SC: Haunted America; 2013., Taylor T. Not only because I had the privilege to speak with a professor from my university but also because it was the first time I interviewed two people simultaneously on the show. Such a great conversation. Thank you, Dr. S and Elisa, for taking the time to speak with me. I learned a lot from our conversation, and I am sure others will also! Did you like this episode? Today, we'll talk with people who have gone through divorce and to family lawyers about how to best navigate what can be a complicated path. But first, host Khalil Ekulona and digital lead Anna Gallegos-Cannon respond to listener feedback and suggestions in this week's @ Us. A report from the Lumina Foundation found more than 25% of undergraduate students are raising a child and approximately 58% are working while enrolled in college or university. Adult learners often enroll in college or university in order to change careers or earn new skills to further their established careers. Often adult learners will have to balance multiple competing priorities while navigating the learning process, such as a career, family, military service, and other circumstances.Learn more about CITI Program: https://about.citiprogram.org/
For more than 40 years, folklorist, state park manager, and 2019 National Heritage Fellow Bobby Fulcher has been seeking out and recording traditional artists, creating programming around these artists to shine a light on their work, and serving as an inspiration and mentor to multiple generations of young folklorists. That Fucher has accomplished all this while working for Tennessee State Parks really gets to the heart of his vision: the deep connection between traditional culture and the natural environment in which it occurs. He began his career as a naturalist and came to love and cherish not just the environment but also the traditional arts that were created in the Cumberlands of Tennessee. When he first heard traditional banjo music in college, he thought, “If I could learn that, I'd be happy every day there on out.” He did learn the banjo and would bring it with him when he went on his search for little-known traditional musicians because he believed that if you arrive with “a banjo or fiddle in your hand, you'll make yourself welcome wherever you go.” He is a soft-spoken philosopher who has brought to his work an insatiable curiosity and a deep sense of wonder. You'll hear it in this podcast—and you'll also hear some of the old-time music Fucher has shone a light on.
The Reverend and the Reprobate sit down with Reverend friend, Dr Ryan Winders. Dr. Winders talks about his journey to collect every game released on the original Nintentdo Entertainment System. Ryan tells the @RevRepPodcast how he was able to finish this incredible collection and then proceeds to tell them one of the craziest stories in WWE history infamously known as the "Montreal Screw Job" While at the University of Kentucky, Ryan majored in Secondary Mathematics Education, receiving His Bachelor's in 2005 and my Master's in 2007. During my time there, He was involved in Alpha Tau Omega, serving as the Chaplain for 1 year; UK Choristers and Men's Chorus; and the Baptist Student Union, where He served in several offices. Ryan also was a founding member of an organization called "The Rock" which was a non-denominational Christian organization aimed at Fraternity and Sorority members. The summers of his college years & post-college years were full of adventure. He served as a Financial Director for LifeWay Christian Resources for 7 summers, and was fortunate enough to travel the country and meet people from all walks of life. Ryan worked in Florida, Tennessee, Maryland, West Virginia, Michigan, South Carolina, California, New Mexico, Kentucky, and Hawaii. After college, he worked as a High School Math Teacher in Lexington, KY at several different high schools, gaining valuable experience in a multitude of backgrounds. At first, he worked solely with ESL students and refugees and middle-class families in the public school system before moving to a private Christian school. It was during this time that He chose to complete his second Master's in Guidance Counseling from the University of the Cumberlands. After completing two years of a Master's in one year, Ryan accepted a position as a Guidance Counselor at George Rogers Clark High School. While there, He worked with 10th-12th Graders and created a College and Career Readiness system that helped the school become a "School of Distinction". After three years as a guidance counselor, Ryan began to work on his Doctoral Degree in Educational Leadership at Morehead State University. He completed his Dissertation in 2019 titled, "Preparing Students for the Next Level: Using 3:1 Supports to Eliminate the Transition Gap". His research was based off a program implemented at Frankfort High School in Frankfort, KY. The high school uses a combination of technology, community members/resources, and local college resources to give students more responsibility of their own education, while holding them accountable in all aspects of student growth. After graduating with my Ed.D., He accepted his current position as Assistant Professor of Education at Union College in Barbourville, KY. At Union, Ryan teaches Graduate and Undergraduate classes in the areas of Educational Technology, Instructional Design, Mathematics, and Professional Writing - while also serving as the Education Department's Assessment Coordinator and swim coach Check out Ryan Here: insta: https://www.instagram.com/winders111/ Rev and Rep Linktr.ee (all the show links can be found below) https://linktr.ee/revreppodcast
Your Hope-Filled Perspective with Dr. Michelle Bengtson podcast
Episode Summary: Christmas time can be so stressful. Would you like to experience calm in the midst of the holiday chaos? What if I told you that you could enjoy a more simple Christmas and, in doing so, reconnect with the real reason we celebrate the holiday? Join me with Tama Fortner as we talk about how to have a Simple Christmas. Quotables from the episode: “Simple Christmas” is the book I wish someone had written for me when my children were little, before I had all these life experiences under my belt. So many things about “how Christmas is supposed to be” just didn't work for my family. I want to give moms permission to chart their own course, while also providing some thoughts to draw them closer to God and His Son. It's important to learn to be more thoughtful and intentional about what we allow into our life and our family time, especially at the holidays. Just because we've always done this or everybody does that, doesn't mean it's right for us this year. As you launch into this holiday season and start filling up calendars and to-do lists, ask yourself three questions: Does it make me smile? Does it make my loved ones smile? (Because aren't those the things that makes us mamas smile?) And, most importantly, does it make God smile? When you filter everything through these three questions, the things that really matter quickly rise to the top. If a holiday tradition is no longer working for your family, kick it to the curb! The need to keep up with what everyone else is doing is overwhelming. Give yourself permission to simplify, to let some things go to savor the most important things this holiday. Recognize that as a child or daughter of God, you are loved regardless of what you do, how perfectly wrapped the gifts are, or how beautiful the holiday table is. When you reach yours or others' expectations for yourself, the bar moves, the level increases, and you're under more stress to continually be doing even more. Always start with reading the Bible! That is where God talks to us, where His will, His way, and His peace are found. Quiet time can be hard to carve out for moms, so I suggest that quiet time doesn't have to look “perfect”—with a cozy chair, coffee, Bible, and an hour of uninterrupted silence. Sometimes quiet time is a state of mind that we carry with us into the chaos. And sometimes it has to be snatched up in a moment here and there. So keep a Bible with you always. I love an actual paper Bible, but apps on the phone are so convenient to soak up a verse waiting in carpool or whenever you have a moment. When we start our day off in the word, and allow Him to set our intentions, we will get done what HE deems important for the day, and we will feel more at peace. Jesus's ministry was centered around interruptions. When we allow ourself to be interrupted and look for the possibility in those interruptions, we will find the people in need and what they need, so that we're accomplishing God's to-do list for the day. Let other moms be good at what they are good at without the need to compare yourself to them. You'll shine in the areas that you are good at. Consider what it is that you want at the end of the holiday season, and then your to-do list will begin to reflect what you ultimately desire. Scripture References: Luke 2:19 (NIV) — Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. Jeremiah 29:13 (NIV) — You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. Luke 1:47–48 (NIV) — My spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. Acts 17:28 (NIV) -- For in him we live and move and have our being.
