2024 was a big year for the Transmanian Devils, and 2025 could well be even bigger. With their first eighty minute match under their belt last year, the coming months promise more fixtures and a second-anniversary to savour for a club that offers a space for folks from the trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming community to play rugby, make friends and generally have a really good time. So, what better way to kick off a new year on the podcast than with Maz from the Devils, who is here to tell us all about the club and their experiences with it. They tell us about their journey in rugby, what the Devils mean to them, the club's fundraising goals for the Union Cup in Oslo, inclusivity – oh, and we learn a little bit about how Maz discovered the joys of being a drag king as well! If it feels like we've been here before, it's because we have... sort of. It was in 2020 that Alistair Burford and David ‘FiFi' Cumpston first joined us to talk about the Union Cup in Birmingham – which, at the time, was set for the following year. But COVID and travelling restrictions meant the tournament – which is Europe's largest inclusive rugby competition – had to be postponed for two whole years. It was an agonising wait - but this month, it's finally here, and Alistair and David are back on the podcast to tell us all about it! We talk about all sorts of things on this episode – including that decision to postpone; the bidding Process; David and Fifi's own journey in rugby; how Birmingham has got behind the Cup – and loads, loads more! Welcome back to another episode of Ruck my Life Podcast! This week we are honoured to be joined by Mr Darren Morrin from the Emerald Warriors. Who were the last team to host the Union Cup, A tournament which we are sad to see is the next victim of the COVID crisis and will be postponed until 2023. As usual we discuss the ever growing issue of being gay at a young age and how our perception of sport is so fragile. However Darren tells his story of how he overcame his barriers and travelled the world with the Irish teams and is now the head coach of Ireland’s first IGR team.
From the Olympics to the European Championships, 2021 is shaping up to be a huge year for sport. And in Birmingham, fans are counting down until the end of April when the city will host the Union Cup - Europe's largest inclusive rugby tournament. Teams from across the continent will take part in the event, so it seemed appropriate to make this episode about two of the people who have helped to make it happen. Alistair Burford is the tournament director, and David Cumpston - or Fifi, as he's also known - is the chairman of the Birmingham Bulls - the club that will be hosting the tournament. This is a cracking conversation about all sorts of different things – from the founding of the Bulls to the attitude of the sides they play; the importance of inclusivity in rugby, and sport as a space where people can be themselves; the process behind bidding for the Union Cup and how COVID-19 may impact on things; and how folks in the Birmingham area can get involved in making it a success. Oh, and Eurovision also comes up, for reasons we still don't quite understand! David and Alistair are two brilliant guests, and we really think you're going to like hearing from them. He's an England Touch international who makes his living commentating on rugby matches around the world. And when Nick Heath isn't doing the commentating himself, he's learning about it from the very best as the host of the brilliant 'Cue Commentator' podcast that sees him interview some of the most familiar names to ever sit behind a microphone. He's just got back from Dublin where he was working at the Union Cup - which is Europe's largest inclusive rugby tournament - and made time in his busy schedule to talk to us about all aspects of his work. On the agenda: backing himself to make it in the commentary game; what makes a *great* commentator: and who is on his bucket-list of folk to chat to for the upcoming series of 'Cue Commentator'. So, if you want to hear two fellas geek out about what it takes to really make it behind the mic in the world of sport, this is the episode for you! A husky Ash and a limping Matt tune in, still wrecked, to recap on their weekend together in Dublin for the Union Cup. Ash (ex-player) joined Matt (current pitch perfectionist) with the rest of the Kings Cross Steelers - the worlds first gay inclusive rugby team to take part in the European tournament! The highs and the lows of the weekend are summarised in this special episode. Enjoy!
Lindsay Peat is the sort of amazing athlete who hasn't just excelled in one sport - but in a whole bucketload of them. She represented Ireland as a youngster in football; she did the same in basketball as a full international; then played three All-Ireland Finals as a Gaelic football star. Then, she decided to take up rugby - debuting against England in only her eighth game, and taking part in a World Cup and three Women's Six Nations since then. She's also an ambassador for this year's Union Cup in Dublin - as Europe's largest inclusive rugby tournament heads to the Emerald Isle. We're delighted to have such an eloquent, articulate guest on the pod - and her last answer in particular is one of the most poignant we've had since we started. We love her, and we think you will as well. We'll be honest - some episodes just click, and this is one of them. We've wanted to have the Northampton Outlaws on for a little while - and we decided the perfect time to do it was now, fresh off their triumph in the IGR Southern League. So, we got Simon Chapman and Simon Law from the inclusive club into the studio for a really fun conversation about a whole load of things. On the agenda - how they both got involved with the team; plans for the Union Cup; training with the awesome James Haskell; and how much they ACTUALLY remember of the weekend they claimed the league championship. They're both terrific chaps - and we loved having them on. Escuchar audio
