*Executive Producer - Jeremiah Higgins LA Giltinis Adam Ashe is in The Sports Lounge with Big Lou! Adam Ashe was born in Scotland and has been a mainstay of Scottish rugby for much of the past decade. The no. 8 attended Alva Academy and it was with Ayr in the Scottish Premiership where he found his first senior opportunity. His potential was quickly noticed by Glasgow and he was signed as a development player with the Warriors in 2011. He debuted for Glasgow in 2012 and also found international opportunities with the Scotland 7s during the 2011-12 series as a teenager. A year later, he was picked for the Scotland U20s, picked in all the team's Six Nations matches and a further five World Rugby U20s matches. Ashe was recognised as one of Scotland's top prospects when he was awarded the John McPhail Scholarship in 2014 and given the chance to train in New Zealand with Canterbury for 15 weeks. However, midway through that period, he was given the opportunity to join Vern Cotter's Scotland Test side. He debuted against South Africa in that year's June Series, starting at no. 8 and playing the full match. Ashe has won six Test caps overall, most recently against Italy in 2015. Injuries have at times hampered Ashe's progress but he had featured in 34 matches for the Warriors before departing at the end of the interrupted 19-20 Pro14 season. Ashe showed his class for the Giltinis in 2021 with his all-round skills as a powerful runner, linkman and lineout option before a ruptured bicep ended his season early. A frontline asset for 2022 when fit. www.lagiltinis.com Adam Ashe Social: Instagram - @adamashe_ Twitter - @Adam Ashe
Today we spoke with Joy Neville - former Ireland women's rugby union international and current IRFU referee Joy is a former Ireland women's rugby union international and a current rugby union referee. As a player Neville represented Ireland at both the 2006 and 2010 Women's Rugby World Cups, captaining the first Ireland team to defeat France in that period. After retiring as a player she took up being a referee. She has taken charge of matches in the Women's Six Nations Championship, the World Rugby Women's Sevens Series and the Rugby World Cup, including the 2017 final. Neville has also achieved a number of firsts as a female referee in the men's game - a Pro14 match when she took charge of a 2017-18 fixture between Ulster and the Southern Kings - wait for the story from that game! This also saw Neville become the first woman to referee a top-level men's rugby union match in the UK. She is professionally contracted with the IRFU, has been a TMO, and is based in Limerick. Today we spoke about her journey to being a ref from a player, what makes an excellent referee - and what the prep and post-game processes look like. We heard about the challenges of being a referee, finding a balance between home and work with travel, and her varied officiating roles. We explored how to counter doubt and mistakes - and her fundraising and giving back work. This one is inspiring...about embracing challenges!
Despite our initial reservations about the new United Rugby Championship, the successor to the old PRO14 has really caught our attention. The addition of four South African teams to the mix, has proven to be an exciting development, despite their shaky start in the opening two rounds. Meanwhile last year's Rainbow Cup champions Italian side Benetton are proving that they are no flash in the pan and are definite contenders for a strong finish. It's a fascinating tournament which has a real international feel to it and is so far serving up some spicy offerings.
Today we spoke with Billy Holland - recently retired professional rugby player and captain - with Munster Rugby and Ireland. Brought to you by Hauora - a whole person performance wellbeing growth partner. Visit www.HauoraLife.com Billy played his entire professional rugby career with Munster Rugby, accounting for 247 appearances, having played for 14 seasons. One of their most capped players of all time, Billy was selected in Pro14 dream teams and captained Munster many times as a forward. This was Billy's first ever podcast and we really enjoyed hearing his stories and incisive insights. We speak about what Billy has been doing and has planned for after rugby, Conor Murray as Lions captain...and always wanting to be the fittest forward in the Munster team. We ask why pro athletes from other sports play golf, scheduling training, leadership styles - and game management as a captain. Billy opens up on the strengths of his previous coaches, big moments and highlights - and what makes the Munster culture special.

The PRO14 is no more... now the Irish teams will be playing in the United Rugby Championship. The four big South African sides are joining the original PRO12 outfits to form a new league - and the lads sink their teeth into all the various changes. The lads are concerned about the move away from merit-based qualification for Europe, but agree that it is a good move to allow the South African teams compete in the Champions Cup. Speaking of Europe's premier rugby competition, there are some changes coming to that too, with the lads pleased overall but on the fence about having two-legged last 16 ties. The lads finish things off by picking through Andy Farrell's Ireland squad for the summer tour, including the decision to omit Ross Byrne from the out-halves, as well as taking a look at some of the exciting young players involved.

Bernard Jackman, Garry Doyle and Gavan Casey look back on the weekend's interpros: Ulster look like they need the beach while Munster suddenly seem beastly. Leinster were incredible in the circumstances, but Connacht's Achilles heel continues to be exploited. Plus, the lads discuss Jack Regan's journey from not making the grade in Ireland to playing in Super Rugby and, eventually, landing alongside the Lions captain in the Pro14 on a three-year deal. His story should be embraced, but his pathway should also be made replicable.
Connacht started the game like a whirlwind but got blown away by a hurricane of a performance by the PRO14 champions in the Sportsground in round 2 of the Rainbow Cup.The Craggy crew are not too despondent with the home team been hammered by one of the best teams in Europe and are buzzing about Bundee Aki becoming Connacht's 4th British and Irish Lion.We also hear the post-match thoughts of Andy Friend and Peter Sullivan. On the latest episode of The Left Wing, Will Slattery and Luke Fitzgerald are joined by Neil Francis to look back on Leinster's Champions Cup semi-final defeat and look ahead to the Lions squad announcement. For the third year in a row, Leinster have failed to win back the European Cup - this time losing to Ronan O'Gara's La Rochelle side. Luke picks out the areas he thinks cost Leinster the game, while Neil thinks that the influence of La Rochelle second row Will Skelton was crucial in the outcome. The lads debate whether the weakness of the PRO14 has hindered Leinster's chances in Europe and look at how Ross Byrne fared in the absence of Johnny Sexton. On the Lions squad, Neil thinks that Sexton could miss out on selection and explains why he misses Warren Gatland since his departure as Wales head coach.
Colin Gregor, Peter Wright & Tom English assess Edinburgh's win over Zebre in the Pro14 Rainbow Cup. Plus post match reaction from Edinburgh coach Richard Cockerill.
Murray, Bernard and Gavan discuss the shambles that is the running of women’s rugby in this country and the areas in which it needs to improve. As the Rainbow Cup fails to materialise — albeit hopefully just until the autumn — the lads assess the Pro14/16’s future, Welsh fans’ apathy towards it, and how integral the South Africans’ introduction will be to the league establishing more mainstream interest. Plus, Bernard pulls no punches on the sense of disenfranchisement on the ground in Irish rugby, and the lack of a clear pathway for Irish coaches to get opportunities on the professional circuit. ROG’s extension at La Rochelle and Mack Hansen’s arrival in Connacht are also explored by the lads at the top of the show.

What was billed as a Leinster v Toulon preview ended up being more of a Pro14 final review and discussion over what Munster need to get back to the top table. And it's just as well, because the Toulon match never happened, though in our blissful ignorance we did chat shortly after the lineups were announced about what might have been. On this week's episode of The Left Wing, Will Slattery and Luke Fitzgerald are joined by Cian Tracey to discuss the state of Munster rugby after their PRO14 final defeat to Leinster. It is Munster's sixth consecutive defeat to their biggest rivals, including their fourth knockout loss in a row, and the lads begin their discussion by asking why they were so off the pace at the RDS last weekend. Luke was disappointed by the team's defensive intensity while Cian was surprised that the game plan didn't seem to have evolved hugely from the teams' previous meetings. The discussion moves on to the province's signing of South African second row Jason Jenkins, with Luke and Cian in agreement in their worry that it will block the emergence of some exciting young talent in Munster. The lads finish up by looking ahead to a mouthwatering weekend of European rugby, as Leinster host Toulon and Toulouse travel to Thomond Park to take on Munster.
