Close Friends’ Cathedral Adventure by Anne Ward Crocker Annewardcrocker.com https://www.amazon.com/Close-Friends-Cathedral-Adventure-Crocker/dp/1638298009 Peat, a toad, and Paul-Paulette, an earthworm, live in the woods beneath the roots of their friend, Christy, a Christmas fern. One day they are dug up and carried away. Christy is replanted in a pot large enough to hold Paul-Paulette, but Peat is too big to get in and cannot completely hide. He stays under Christy’s fronds, but can’t disappear. Together with their wild flower friends, they are taken to the Washington National Cathedral to participate in the annual Festival of Flowers. While the plants are being carried into the cathedral, Peat is discovered, picked up and left in the Garth – the small, enclosed garden near the base of the stairs. This is the story of the little toad’s adventure as he tries to find his plant and animal friends in the huge building. It is a tour of the cathedral and an introduction to cathedral architecture inside and out. A short glossary of architecture terms is included.

Bogs are our absolute favourite places to be. They're not only tremendously important ecosystems, rich in exquisite biodiversity and massive stores of carbon, they're also uniquely beautiful. These serene, colourful spaces jumble land and water into something at once both alien and familiar. In this episode, we explore the wonders and the mysteries of peatlands, through the story of one very special (and threatened) bog just outside of the city of Vancouver. We meet the scientists who fought for its protection, and some of the folks who are studying it and working on restoring it to this day.Plus, we answer a tricky question: should we still be extracting peat to help grow plants?— — —Visit futureecologies.net/listen/fe-6-8-for-peats-sake for photos from some of our boggy adventures, full credits, citations, and a transcript of this episode
December 12, 2025 - Season 16, Episode 62 of The Terrible Podcast is now in the can. In this Friday morning episode, Alex Kozora and I get right to talking about the latest concerning Pittsburgh Steelers OLB T.J. Watt, who is currently dealing with a lung issue that could prevent him from playing Monday night against the Miami Dolphins. Alex and I go over the Friday morning report from Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network about Watt and how he is allegedly dealing with a tiny hole in one of his lungs. The Steelers released their first injury report of Week 15 on Thursday, so Alex and I make sure to recap it early in this show. We discuss the possibility of T Andrus Peat and DT Derrick Harmon not playing on Monday night against the Dolphins. We also talk a little about the big opportunity that potentially awaits T Dylan Cook should he wind up making his first NFL start on Monday night should Peat wind up being unable to play. The Steelers made several transactions the last two days, so Alex and I make sure to recap those, which includes two offensive linemen being added to the practice squad and Cook being signed to the 53-man roster. On Thursday, we once again heard from two of the Steelers' coordinators, Arthur Smith and Teryl Austin, so Alex and I recap the main talking points to come out of those media sessions. Alex and I then give our picks against the spread for the remainder of the Week 15 NFL games provided by show sponsor MyBookie.ag. We will have our picks for the game between the Steelers and the Dolphins during the Monday episode. This 74-minute episode also discusses several other minor topics not noted above and we end this episode by answering several emails we received from listeners. steelersdepot.com Learn more about your ad choices. The Steelers went into Baltimore and flipped the script with an aggressive passing attack, stealing a win from the Ravens in a must win situation to distance themselves for the AFV North Division lead. Now, the Steelers face the red hot Miami Dolphins led by the explosive Devon Achane on Monday Night Football. Join Jeremy Kohlman and Wil Masisak as they break down the Baltimore game, look ahead to the matchups they'll face against the Dolphins, and talk some NFL playoff caliber games and also discuss the contenders for the College Football Playoffs.

Final Surge: https://www.finalsurge.com (RUNNINGEFFECT20)Few coaches have reshaped a running program the way Laurie Henes has.For more than three decades, she's been at the heart of NC State running, first as a competitor, then as a builder of champions. As an athlete, Laurie was an eight-time All-American, the 1991 NCAA 5,000-meter champion, and later competed for the U.S. at the 1995 World Championships (10,000m).She had personal bests of 15:31 for 5,000 meters and 32:05 for 10,000 meters. She knows the grind of the sport firsthand: the glory of winning and the sting of just missing an Olympic team by two places at the 1996 Trials in the 10,000m.That perspective carried seamlessly into her coaching career.Since joining the Wolfpack staff in the early '90s, Laurie has shaped the program into a national powerhouse. She became the women's cross country head coach in 2006, and in 2019, she was elevated to head coach of women's track & field.Since summer 2023, she has served as Director of Track & Field and Cross Country. The results speak for themselves: under her leadership, NC State women's cross country teams captured three straight NCAA titles from 2021 through 2023.She's coached NCAA champions like her daughter Elly Henes and Katelyn Tuohy, as well as countless All-Americans.Tap into the Laurie Henes Special. If you enjoy the podcast, please consider following us on Spotify and Apple Podcasts and giving us a five-star review!I would also appreciate it if you share it with your friend who you think will benefit from it.Comment the word “PODCAST” below and I'll DM you a link to listen. If this episode blesses you, please share it with a friend!S H O W N O T E SThe Run Down By The Running Effect (our new newsletter!): https://tinyurl.com/mr36s9rsBUY MERCH BEFORE IT'S GONE: https://shop.therunningeffect.runOur Website: https://therunningeffect.runTHE PODCAST ON YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClLcLIDAqmJBTHeyWJx_wFQMy Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/therunningeffect/?hl=enTake our podcast survey: https://tinyurl.com/3ua62ffz

Peatlands, bogs, swamps, and wetlands are uniquely biodiverse natural spaces: soft coastal barriers that make immeasurable contributions to the health and sustainability of human endeavor. Left unprotected, their consumption contributes to a growing worldwide problem; conserved, they sequester carbon, enable wildlife, filter water, and protect us from coastal inundation. New rules on game birds are being introduced in England after warnings of a 'heightened risk' of avian flu. The Government says there have been more new cases, particularly in coastal areas and places with a significant number of shoots. English shoots will now have to introduce stricter biosecurity, for instance cleaning and covering feed and water to protect them from wild bird droppings, which can spread the infection, disinfecting vehicles and keeping records of any visits. Rules on moving animals in and out of Scotland are being eased, they were introduced to help control bluetongue and stop the disease moving from England into Scotland. Bluetongue is a virus, spread by biting midges which affects sheep, cattle and goats but not humans. The whole of England became a restricted area earlier this year which meant that animals moving into Wales and Scotland faced costly pre-movement tests. Welsh rules have been relaxed and from next month the rules on animals going into Scotland will also change. Removing peat from commercial veg production is proving problematic. Despite successive Governments intending to ban peat from horticulture, there's currently no date set. Growers are battling to overcome practical issues with peat free compost, particularly where salad crops are concerned. We visit field trials where tomatoes and lettuce are being grown without peat.Farmer, journalist and broadcaster David Richardson has died at the age of 87.
