Directed by, co-written, and starring Sylvester Stallone, The Expendables is the action film featuring an ensemble cast of mostly action film actors including Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Steve Austin, Mickey Rourke, and Bruce Willis. Luke and Nathan return to 2010 to revisit the first installment in this soon to be four-picture film franchise. Mercenary leader Barney Ross (Stallone) and his loyal men take on what they think is a routine assignment: a covert operation to invade the South American country of Vilena and overthrow its dictator. But, when they learn that the job will be a suicide mission, they must choose redemption or the destruction of their brotherhood.

In the latest episode of Piece Of The Action, Matt welcomes Scott Criscuolo to the podcast to watch The Expendables! Listen to Matt and Scott talk about Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Mickey Rourke’s unique look in this movie, Vilena, bad plastic surgery, cauliflower ears, and so much more on episode three of Piece Of The Action!
After Mat asks a lone question for actor Karl Urban (Star Trek: Beyond, Thor: Ragnarok) at Rose City Comic Con 2018 in Portland, Oregon, hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and William Thrasher discuss The Expendables. Throughout Sylvester Stallone's career, he's attempted to launch franchise after franchise. While some of these has been successful (Rocky, Rambo), others have not been prone to box office success (Cliffhanger, Cobra). Inspired by the massive concerts consisting of classic rock band superstars, Stallone gathered a murder of action star mavens for The Expendables. It was a huge success, spawning a franchise of films as well as a possible TV series in the works. The Expendables, a group of aging mercenaries such as Yin-Yang (Jet Li), Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), Hale Caesar (Terry Crews), and leader Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) take on an assignment to liberate Vilena from General Garza (David Zayas). At times dark, humorous, and explosion packed, this first Expendables film struggles to find a solid tone. There is soap opera theatrics of Lee Christmas' girlfriend, oddball Charlotte's Web monologues from their tatoo artist pal Tool (Mickey Rourke), and threatened beheadings of terrorists all within 15 minutes of each other. Despite its wheezing plot machinations, The Expendables is novel for collecting a grab-bag of action superstars in a mediocre premise. Better things are yet to come. Today on Reverse Sequels we are air-dropped onto the vile and villainous island of Vilena, an inexplicable world where women are waterboarded and men punch each other while on fire. With action star worthy quips like, “it ain’t easy being green’, a bad guy trapped in a tower like Rapunzel, and a disturbing lack of Steven Seagal, the original Expendables is not quite what we expected. So strap on your lucky golden skull ring and find out what we got right, what we got wrong, and what we could have never predicted.
This episode take John D. and Frank to the explosive island of Vilena in the film The Expendables. We are impressed to see how buff Stallone is versus the governator, how useless the women are and how wood is about to replace C4 as portable explosive material. Since Hollywood is getting quicker at green-lighting projects, we throw our ideas on what would be cool to see in the next outing of this testosterone extravaganza.
