James Mangold's Cop Land Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta, Robert DeNiro, and Sylvester Stallone in one of the most highly-anticipated films of the 1990s . . . Springing from the headlines of the 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s, and today, James Mangold's 1997 police corruption drama was released to critical acclaim and tepid box-office. In an era of 90s Independent filmmaking, focusing on newspaper/magazine headlines and evening newscasts, Mangold would write and pitch a story (ostensibly a Western) set in modern day life. The reluctant hero, Sheriff Freddy Heflin (an overweight, tired, and sad Stallone), who is neither the Rocky or Rambo hero Stallone is known for, fighting the corruption of an all-star cast of big-city police living outside of the city in a mob financed town. Stallone versus Keitel, Robert Patrick, Peter Berg and John Spencer, with a cocaine-addled Ray Liotta as back-up, and a disheveled, angry, and calculating Internal Affairs officer played by DeNiro manipulating the scene, Mangold's second film - with obvious comparisons to Scorsese - stands out as an brutal and honest look at police corruption and those wiling to stand up against it. insta : laboite2chocolat ou la_boitedechocolatPour ce 36 eme épisode on va se taper d'un bon gros nanar comme on les aime mais qui pourtant a inspiré au moins 3 épisodes de la saga Mission impossible et The Dark Knight Rises, oui oui je suis sérieux en vous disant ça, ce film c'est Cliffhanger !Alors Cliffhanger ça raconte quoi ?
Joe, Kyle, and Rick review the 1983 American dance drama film and the sequel to Saturday Night Fever, "Staying Alive." Directed by Sylvester Stallone, written by Stallone and Norman Wexler, and music by Frank Stallone and the Bee Gees. The film stars John Travolta, Cynthia Rhodes, Finola Hughes, Frank Stallone, Julie Bovasso, and Steve Inwood. We ranked the 12 songs from the soundtrack and picked our favorite lines, characters, performers, and scenes. Enjoy!
We're the perfect blend of young and old so we don't need a hot, new crew to help us discuss the 2014 sequel, The Expendables 3. You'll hear several conversations about the casting of Mel Gibson and how his offscreen problems may help the onscreen shenanigans of his character, Conrad Stonebanks, a lengthy talk about a fifteen to twenty minute story excursion so Stallone can recruit a new team with the help of Dr. Frasier Crane, and the highs and lows of bringing in Wesley Snipes into your franchise only to forget that you got Wesley Snipes to join your franchise. Enjoy! Thanks to our monthly supporters Matt and Vicki S Kate Lampe Daniel Prudhoe Andrew Pangle Steve Weiss Matthew Aldrich Edward Lankford Heather Sahami
You mean we've gone this long doing the podcast without an episode about Stallone? Sylvester Stallone? Well, we're rectifying that in a big way with a two-part extravaganza, both with guests! For this, part one, we've got longtime Demolition Man Matt, the DTVC on board. Are we ending this podcast on a Cliffhanger? Tune in to find out!
This week, The Good, The Bad, and The Sequel locks itself inside Escape Plan 2: Hades — the sequel that takes the grounded prison-break concept from the original and launches it into full sci-fi action insanity. With shifting prisons, digital mind games, endless betrayals, and a whole lot of punching, Escape Plan 2 somehow manages to be both wildly confusing and incredibly entertaining. We dig into everything, including:
Stallone, always on the hunt for the next action blockbuster, took a shot at sci-fi in 1993 with the release of Demolition Man. Set in the future of 1996 and then the future of 2032 it pits him against Wesley Snipes' Simon Phoenix having the absolute time of his life. And that's the whole movie real, just an absolute blast from the get go with somewhat accurate depictions of the future mixed in with absolute insanity like the three sea shells situation. This week on Born to Watch, Whitey flies solo for a massive deep dive into 1982: Year in Review, revisiting one of the most important, influential and completely stacked years in cinema history. While 1982 might not officially hold the crown as the greatest movie year ever, it delivered a collection of films that completely changed Hollywood forever. In this special episode, Whitey breaks down how one single year gave us E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Blade Runner, The Thing, First Blood, Rocky III, Poltergeist, Conan the Barbarian and Tron all within the same incredible stretch of cinema history.Whitey explores the insane eight-week period where science fiction and fantasy films absolutely rewired Hollywood forever. It was the year when genre filmmaking exploded, CGI truly began, practical effects reached their peak, and audiences somehow ignored two movies that are now regarded as masterpieces: Blade Runner and The Thing. There's a huge breakdown of the 1982 box office top ten, including Whitey revisiting Spielberg's emotional masterpiece E.T., which held the box office record for an entire decade. He reflects on how modern kids' movies rarely hit adults emotionally the same way they once did, admitting E.T. absolutely destroyed him on the cry meter during a recent rewatch. The episode also revisits cult favourites like First Blood, with Whitey passionately defending it as one of the great character-driven action films of the 1980s. There's love for Stallone's unbelievable double act of releasing both Rocky III and First Blood in the same year, proving just how dominant Sly was during the early 80s.Whitey also dives into why Rocky III remains one of the best Rocky films ever made, praising Mr T as one of the greatest movie villains of the decade and celebrating the pure charisma he brought to Clubber Lang despite having no acting experience.Australian cinema gets its flowers too, with a huge spotlight on Mad Max 2 and The Man from Snowy River. Whitey argues that both films stand proudly alongside any Hollywood blockbuster of the era and explains how Mad Max 2 became the blueprint for almost every post-apocalyptic movie that followed. There's also a deep appreciation for practical effects and filmmaking craftsmanship throughout the episode. Whitey passionately argues that The Thing still contains the greatest practical creature effects ever put to screen, while Blade Runner's vision of a futuristic Los Angeles remains one of the most influential science fiction worlds ever created.Along the way, there are classic Born to Watch tangents and stories, including:Whitey is getting in trouble in Year 4 after explaining an infamous scene from The World According to GarpChildhood memories of The Pirate Movie soundtrackThe bizarre success of Porky'sWhy does Tootsie make more money than Blade Runner feel completely wrongHow Grease 2 became one of the ugliest moments of 1982 cinemaWhitey also celebrates underrated classics like Firefox, Creepshow, Fast Times at Ridgemont High and 48 Hrs., while exploring how 1982 represented a time when studios were still willing to take massive creative risks on strange, ambitious and original films. This is one of the biggest movie deep dives Born to Watch has ever done, packed full of nostalgia, movie trivia, hilarious stories and genuine love for cinema.JOIN THE CONVERSATION Was 1982 the greatest movie year ever? Dolph Lundgren (Rocky IV, Expendables, Creed II, The Witcher) joins us this week for the most open conversation we have ever had. Dolph walks me through the kidney cancer diagnosis he kept secret for seven years, the misdiagnosis at a major LA hospital that nearly cost him his life, and the surreal moment he got the news in Sweden then drove the Gumball Rally at 150 miles an hour through Europe with his daughter sitting next to him. We also get into the suicidal stretch that followed treatment, the Stallone rift over a possible Drago movie, the new reality show with his daughters, and why he now calls the whole cancer experience a gift. In this week's episode of Born to Watch, the boys step back into the ring for a full Creed 2015 Movie Review, diving deep into the legacy sequel that had the impossible task of continuing one of cinema's most iconic franchises. The Rocky series is sacred ground for movie lovers, sports fans and anyone who's ever wanted to punch frozen meat in a warehouse while inspirational music blasts in the background. But can Creed escape the shadow of Rocky Balboa and become something more than just another nostalgia cash grab?Whitey, G-Man and Dan on the Land lace up the gloves to unpack Ryan Coogler's 2015 boxing drama starring Michael B. Jordan, Sylvester Stallone and Tessa Thompson. The boys discuss whether Adonis Creed's search for identity mirrors the movie's own struggle to forge a new path while still leaning heavily on the Rocky formula fans know and love. The crew debates whether Creed should've been a "hit it and quit it" one-off film, with Whitey arguing the sequels may have actually hurt the legacy of the original movie. There's also a breakdown of the emotional parallels between Rocky and Apollo Creed, why sports movies continue to hit men directly in the soul, and whether boxing films are basically mandatory viewing for blokes everywhere.Dan on the Land brings his own unique "pugilist" expertise to the review after heading straight from boxing training into the recording session. Naturally, this leads to discussions about outlaw dirt bike gangs, whiskey-throttling into barbed wire fences, and whether Michael B. Jordan actually fights like a real boxer or just looks good doing it on camera. The boys also dive into the film's incredible cinematography, especially the famous one-shot fight scene against Leo Sporino. Dan explains why the boxing choreography in Creed is miles ahead of the original Rocky films, while Whitey questions whether the movie rushes Adonis into world-level fights too quickly without earning it first. There's a huge conversation about the movie's emotional side, too. Does Creed actually succeed as a character study in the same way the original Rocky did? Was Rocky's cancer storyline genuinely moving or just emotional manipulation? And did the filmmakers wait too long before finally unleashing the iconic Rocky music cues everyone was waiting for?As always, the episode goes completely off the rails in classic Born to Watch fashion. The boys somehow detour into discussions about awkward TV scenes, The Wire connections, Ryan Gosling in The Big Short, The Hateful Eight, bum jokes, cowboy hats in Cape Town clubs, and why Whitey believes Pretty Ricky Conlan is one of the weakest final opponents in the entire Rocky universe. There's also a deep dive into Ryan Coogler's career, including Fruitvale Station, Black Panther and Sinners, plus a breakdown of Michael B. Jordan's rise to superstardom. The boys discuss Stallone's Oscar-nominated performance as Rocky Balboa and whether he was robbed of the Academy Award after winning the Golden Globe. On top of all that, you'll get the usual Born to Watch segments, including Overs and Unders, Hit/Sleeper/Dud, box office breakdowns, Rotten Tomatoes scores, and the famous Critical Thinking segment where the boys tackle the important questions, like whether you can realistically wear a grey tracksuit into a hip hop club.If you love boxing movies, Rocky nostalgia, hilarious tangents and three Aussie idiots trying to unpack one of the best sports dramas of the modern era, this episode is for you.JOIN THE CONVERSATION Is Creed the best Rocky movie since the original? Did the sequels ruin the legacy of Creed? Was Stallone robbed of the Oscar? And most importantly… could you catch the chicken?#Creed #Rocky #CreedReview #MichaelBJordan #SylvesterStallone #BoxingMovies #BornToWatch #MoviePodcast #SportsMovies #FilmReview
On this solo episode of the Filthy Spoon Podcast, Jon sits down with John Stallone of Howl for Wildlife. They discuss Stallone's background—from growing up hunting in New York to guiding and podcasting across the West—and the founding of Howl for Wildlife to push back on policies like plans to study reintroducing grizzly bears in California. They cover grassroots organizing, membership and fundraising challenges, upcoming events including a May 30 banquet, hunting stories, and Stallone's favorite cooking and gear tips. The episode highlights the need for hunters to be united and active in wildlife policy.

Cathy and Todd discuss Rocky IV, the 1985 film that Sylvester Stallone wrote, directed, and starred in, grossing $300 million on a $31 million budget and spending six weeks at number one over Christmas. They break down Apollo Creed’s shocking death at the hands of Ivan Drago and the real story of Brigitte Nielsen sliding a photo under Stallone’s hotel room door and landing a role he wrote specifically for her. They dig into what the film is really about, whether Drago is a villain or the Soviet state’s most tragic victim, how every great sports movie is secretly about an individual fighting an institution that doesn’t want them to win, and why a film that won five Razzie Awards is still so beloved to this day. Cathy and Todd discuss Rocky 3, the 1982 sequel where Stallone ditched everything that made the first two movies feel real and ended up with the biggest hit of the franchise anyway. They talk about where Mr. T came from, how Hulk Hogan got hired, and how Stallone dropped 40 pounds so fast it caused memory loss. They get into how “Eye of the Tiger” only exists because Queen said no, the statue that Philadelphia didn’t want, and an ending that freezes mid-fight. It's Die Hard in a dystopia! For our penultimate episode, this week we're hopping on our lawmasters and cruising into Mega City One, as we discuss the 2012 version of DREDD aka DREDD 3-D!In the futuristic crime-ridden dystopia of Mega City One, roving patrols of ‘Judges' are permitted to dispense on-the-spot justice with the power of judge, jury and executioner. In this context, the hard-bitten, highly experienced Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is reluctantly partnered with rookie candidate Judge Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), who has psychic abilities due to a genetic mutation. In the process of investigating a triple homicide in the towering high-rise building known as Peach Trees, the two Judges incur the wrath of the culprit – ferocious and powerful local gangster MaMa (Lena Headey) – who seals off the building and declares war on the pair of them, meaning that the two vastly outnumbered Judges must use all their skills and guile to survive an onslaught of attacks from the building's seemingly infinite number of marauding criminals. The boys put this awesome movie in its full context by discussing the entire history of the Dredd character and it's life across popular culture (including the 1995 Stallone movie version). They go deep on this icon figure's complex appeal, and what this adaptation got so right, and what the distributors got so wrong (remember the 3-D craze?! Ah…good times) in translating this challenging source material to the silver screen at the second attempt. "Crime is the disease. Meet the Cure.""The strong arm of the law."Back in the spring and summer of 1986, those were among several snappy taglines for this highly anticipated action thriller starring Oscar-winner Sylvester Stallone as his direct follow-up to TWO smash successes lead by him the previous year: Rambo: First Blood Part II and Rocky IV. THIS time, he was playing the ultimate cop named Marion Cobretti (nickname: Cobra) who was on the hunt around Los Angeles for a brutal serial killer (or serial killers?) named the Night Slasher played by veteran character Brian Thompson (The Terminator, Miracle Mile, The X-Files). This film was directed by George P. Cosmatos (Rambo, Tombstone) though apparently it ended up being co-directed by Stallone himself. There was much hype for this film when it was released in May 1986 though the reviews were pretty poor, mostly related to its very simplistic plot and extreme violence and.....it did ok at the box office. It wasn't the blockbuster which it was expected to be but the film made solid money at the worldwide box office. Since then, it has garnered an increasingly rabid cult following and is now looked upon as one of Sly's most quotable films....his answer to Dirty Harry. Let's see how it holds up forty years later and find out if.....THIS is where the law stops.....and HE starts. ;) Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon Send us Fan MailSupport the showhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

(OBS: Denne gratis-version er 9½ minut kortere end Klub Moviebox-versionen på Patreon!) Skuden er ladet med... Viennetta-is og 90'er-nostalgi!

It's the third installment of "Misfired Cannons," and time to look at what happens when Cannon Films decides to work with one of Hollywood's biggest megastars. Sylvester Stallone was riding high off the success of both the Rocky and Rambo franchises in the mid-80s, so deciding to launch a new action franchise with the notoriously frugal and not always successful Cannon might have seemed a strange, unexpected move. So what sort of deal did Cannon offer Stallone to make it hard to resist? What other surprising 80s hit was Stallone originally attached to and oddly led to the creation of this film? Why is there controversy regarding who really directed the movie? How effective is the movie's blend of action and horror? We discuss all this and more, as we look at 1986's Cobra, pig! Charlie and George are off to mid-90s Miami, getting hot and sweaty in the explosive and (not so) erotic action movie, The Specialist! There's a lot to unpack - Stallone and Stone's desperate search for chemistry, James Wood's acting in overdrive, Rod Steiger offending all of Latin America with that accent and Eric Roberts' amazing wardrobe - just wow. Oh, there's also John Barry on the soundtrack with some James Bond B-sides. There's all the usual alternative casting and directors, deleted scenes and bad impressions.
1993 is here, kids are obsessed with pogs, power rangers and fruit by the foot. Stallone stars as Gabe in this griping, Die Hard on mountain romp. We get into story, the actors and veer off on tangents as per usual. Craig Carton and Chris McMonigle put Big Mac and Pete Hoffman to the test with a wild round of Giants first-round draft picks — and it turns into an all-time performance. From Saquon Barkley to Lawrence Taylor, the names keep coming as the pressure builds!
Sly vs. Arnold was a rivalry that help Hollywood become the behemoth it was in the 80s and 90s. During said rivalry, Arnold pump faked Stallone into one of the worse cop movies ever made. Estelle Getty didn't deserve the strays but....naw...nope, this movie is awful! Starring- Sylvester Stallone, Estelle Getty, Roger Rees and JoBeth Williams
Alrighty, loyal listeners! After the high-seas chaos of Cabin Boy, we're trading waves for wheels and hitting the scorching asphalt. This week, Ben, Chris, and Kevin dive into a high-octane F1 racing drama starring Sylvester Stallone as part of our new “Misunderstood” film series. Directed by Renny Harlin and co-written by Stallone himself, this episode shifts into gear with conversations about race car culture, Stallone's career highs and lows, and the cloud of negativity that's followed this film since its release. But is that criticism justified—or has this movie been unfairly left in the dust? Is it a misfire, or an underrated gem worth revisiting? Buckle up and tune in to find out! Next up is a similar type of film starring a pod favorite, and it's with a guest from down undahh! Please rate us a 5/5 on Apple, Spotify, or Podbean, and review us on Apple. Hey, Scuttlebutt listeners. Thank you for joining us and your continued support. This week, we welcome Josh Cannon to the scuttlebutt. Josh is a veteran Marine of OIF and the Director of Research for the Frederick Honors College at the University of Pittsburgh. He is also the author of Fatal Second Helen: A Modern Veteran's Iliad, a book that overlays his experience in combat with the themes of the Iliad. This was a fascinating discussion about what it is that the narrative of the Iliad did for the ancient Greeks, and how it applies to us today, especially those who wear the uniform. We joke about the action heroes of the 80s and 90s and how fun those movies were, but how those stories are infamous for being shallow and for having one-dimensional characters. Josh helps us understand that this tradition is actually prevalent throughout history, with the Iliad in particular (a text written around the 8th century BC) as not only one of the oldest surviving literary works, but possibly the first recorded action story, as it is so similar to the action genre of the Schwarzenegger and Stallone films. Also, we want to recognize that March is the 110th anniversary of the Marine Corps Gazette being in continuous publication. A wonderful milestone and congratulations to the Gazette staff, past and present. Enjoy! veteransiliad.com The post #235: A Modern Veteran’s Iliad with Josh Cannon first appeared on Marine Corps Association.

Happy Potluck Saturday, Heal Squad! This one starts in old Hollywood, Greta Garbo disappearing at the height of her fame (but secretly knowing exactly what she was doing), Oscars past vs. present, and why movies just don't seem to hit the same anymore… even though Kev shouts out a few recent ones he actually loved (Song Sung Blue, Nuremberg, the Clooney film)! How the whole system really works, the politics behind Oscar wins, why so many recent films feel forgettable, and the realization that Hollywood might not matter the way it used to. Kev gets into what's actually changing: audiences splintering, old entertainment shows quietly disappearing, AI starting to creep in, and why the people who are still thriving (Stallone, Taylor Sheridan) are the ones who create, not just perform. And for anyone trying to “make it” in the arts… the hard truth: you don't do it for the money anymore. You do it because you love it, you learn everything, and you adapt to what's coming next. A little nostalgia, a little reality check, and a very honest look at where things are headed. Talk shawtly! On paper, the pairing of Sylvester Stallone and Sharon Stone, both megawatt stars in 1994, seemed a promising cinematic prospect. Unfortunately, the resulting effort, Luis Llosa's The Specialist, failed to deliver the action Stallone fans craved, nor the erotic heat Stone was famous for. But is it unintentionally hilarious? You bet! Join Sebastian and guest Richard Hamilton as they attempt to diffuse this misguided, Miami-based bomb.
