Legends Podcast #730; Better Man (2024)

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 5, 2025 74:13

One of last year's most puzzling releases came in the form of a musical biopic chronicling the rise to fame of British pop star Robbie Williams. While following all the usual biopic tropes, this film made one rather noticeable swerve by portraying its star and subject as an anthropomorphic CGI chimpanzee. With Williams providing the narration and singing and Jonno Davies providing the voice and motion capture, the film, directed by The Greatest Showman's Michael Gracey, never acknowledges this species-bending premise while playing it straight. Despite Robbie Williams' mega-stardom in the UK, audiences didn't swing into theaters to see it there, or in the States where he's far less well known: the $110 million dollar flick only brought in $22.5 million at the box office. Critics, however, were mostly kind to the film, which received a record-breaking 16 nominations at the 2025 Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards, winning in nine categories, including Best Film. But will our hosts see no evil, hear no evil, and speak no evil? Or does Better Man deserve worse?    For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com    You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. Please subscribe and give us a positive review. When a prank goes wrong leaving the most popular girl in school dead in the trunk of a car, her clique will stop at nothing to cover up their crime. Starring Rose McGowan, Rebecca Gayheart, Julie Benz, and Judy Greer, this film written and directed by Darren Stein didn't take a huge bite out of the box office, with many critics souring it at the time of release. However, as time passed, audiences have come to see it as a cult classic alongside similar films like Heathers and Mean Girls. There has even been talk of a musical or television adaptation. Legends Podcast #726; Megalopolis (2024)

Play Episode Listen Later May 7, 2025 66:08

Director Francis Ford Coppola is widely regarded as one of the greatest directors of the twentieth century, the visionary force behind The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, and dozens of other films. For decades, Coppola had sought to make a film drawing parallels between the fall of the Roman Republic and the future of the United States by retelling the Catilinarian conspiracy in modern New York, but was unable to secure studio funding. After three decades of fits and starts, Coppola ultimately spent $120 million of his own money to make the film, drawn largely from the fortune he made in the winemaking business. Released in fall of 2024, the ensemble cast features Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, and Laurence Fishburne. After a troubled production and a rocky reception at Cannes, where the film premiered, Coppola was forced to spend additional money to market the film, but the trailer was removed for using fabricated pull quotes. Ultimately, the film grossed only $14.3 million at the box office - barely 10% of what it cost to make. But is this film - the ultimate vanity project - worth the wait or does it collapse under the weight of its own ambitions? All roads lead to Megalopolis! Legends Podcast #725; A Goofy Movie (1995)

We're continuing our journey on the open road this month with a classic Disney movie released three decades ago. In this film, a father and son come to terms with the circle of life while realizing the importance of being prepared to face the challenges of a road trip. Far from meaning “no worries” for the son (who wants to feel the love tonight with his crush), the efforts of the father (who just can't wait to be king of the road) to reconnect with his son lead to a veritable stampede of sight gags, one-liners, and comedies-of-error. No, it's not The Lion King! Based on the Disney Afternoon cartoon series Goof Troop, produced by Jeffrey Katzenberg, and featuring the voice talents of Bill Farmer, Jason Marsden, Jim Cummings, Kellie Martin, and Rob Paulsen, it was a massive flop on release and was critically panned. But in the thirty years since, it has gone on to become a cult classic, with a direct-to-video sequel in the year 2000, multiple pop-culture references (including in Donald Glover's Atlanta), and a documentary, Not Just a Goof, released just this month. Ladies and goofs, it's A Goofy Movie! But will we be seeing it “I 2 I”?   For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com   You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. Co-starring Harvey Keitel, Michael Madsen, Christopher McDonald, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Brad Pitt, the film won multiple awards, including the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for writer Callie Khouri. It's Tax Day, and we're celebrating the fiscal cycle with a movie that gets physical. A film that puts the “internal” from “internal injuries” in the Internal Revenue Service. The flick that proves pocket protectors can be cool and no one will make fun of you for wearing them if you also carry a really big gun. Ben Affleck stars, the same year he donned the Bat-Mantle in Batman V Superman, alongside Jon Bernthal, Anna Kendrick, J.K. Simmons, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, John Lithgow, Jean Smart, and Jeffrey Tambor. In the film, Affleck plays an autistic CPA who is also a master assassin. Written by Ozark creator Bill Dubuque and directed by Gavin O'Connor, the film rightly drew criticism for “cripface” - casting a non-disabled actor to play a person with a disability - the film performed well at the box office and earned a sequel, which premiered last month at SXSW and goes wide later this month. But when the bill comes due, is The Accountant merely a paint-by-numbers affair, is it guilty of fraud, or does it add up to more than the sum of its parts?   For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com   You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. Unfortunately, the film bombed spectacularly at the box office and was panned by critics at the time of release, but its eclectic soundtrack and stacked cast of future stars have made it into something of a cult favorite in the intervening years. In the mid-aughts, America became obsessed with high fashion for some reason. Maybe it was Project Runway's silver-haired imp Tim Gunn whispering in our ears to “make it work.” Maybe we were all bewitched by the well-dressed ladies of Sex and the City. But Manolo Blahnik and Jimmy Choo were suddenly household names. Enter Meryl Streep as the boss from Hell: Miranda Priestly, the editor-in-chief of Runway magazine. She's bringing the fire and brimstone of haute couture to torture her new assistant, played by a fresh-faced Anne Hathaway, in this 2006 comedy written by Aline Brosh McKenna from the novel by Lauren Weisberger. The film was a massive hit, won multiple awards, and scored Oscar noms for Streep and costume designer Patricia Field, who reportedly spent over $1 million to clothe the cast. But does this Runway project make it work? Or does it seem as gauche and dated as last season's trends? They say the devil is in the details, and this time, The Devil Wears Prada.   Gird your loins, everyone!   For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com   You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. In March 2019, The Walt Disney Company officially completed its $71.3 billion purchase of 21st Century Fox and gained the film rights to several Marvel Comics characters for Marvel Studios, including Deadpool and the X-Men. After a long development period, Marvel Studios finally announced plans to incorporate the R-rated Deadpool franchise into the relatively family-friendly Marvel Cinematic Universe. In an unexpected twist, Hugh Jackman joined the cast to reprise his role as Wolverine, last seen in 2017's Logan, teaming up with Deadpool in this multiverse-spanning movie that pays homage to the Fox films. The first R-rated movie directly distributed under Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures became the highest grossing R rated movie of all time, the second-highest grossing movie of 2024, and the highest grossing MCU outing since Spider-Man: No Way Home - another multiverse mash-up movie with legacy nods. Over the next two weeks, we'll be toasting and roasting two of the most famous from the duo of Rankin and Bass. Which of them belongs on the Nice List and which one deserves a shiny lump of coal in its stocking. This is Legends of Christmas! Airing fifty years ago this month, based on the book by Phyllis McGinley, this Rankin and Bass special deals with every child's worst nightmare: Christmas has been canceled! After centuries of delivering presents to every child on Earth, Santa Claus is suffering from exhaustion and decides to take the year off. That means it's up to Mrs. Claus to figure out a way to save Christmas, with the help of some elves. We also meet the Miser Brothers, Heat Miser and Snow Miser, who cause trouble for Mrs. Claus as she seeks to wake Santa from his stupor. Featuring the voices of Mickey Rooney, Dick Shawn and George S. Irving, the special received a live-action remake in 2006 and an animated sequel, A Miser Brothers' Christmas, in 2008. Over the next two weeks, we'll be toasting and roasting two of the most famous from the duo of Rankin and Bass. Which of them belongs on the Nice List and which one deserves a shiny lump of coal in its stocking. This is Legends of Christmas! Airing sixty years ago this month, the first Rankin and Bass Christmas special asked if you recall the most famous reindeer of all. Based on the children's book by Robert L. May, originally published by Montgomery Ward, and made perhaps even more famous by the Gene Autry version of song written by May's brother-in-law Johnny Marks. The most famous version of all is the TV special produced by Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass, sponsored by GE, which aired on NBC and adapted the original story into an “Animagic” stop-motion saga featuring Rudolph, Hermey, Sam the Snowman, Yukon Cornelius, the Bumble, and more. An instant classic, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer kicked off a tradition of Rankin/Bass Christmas specials, including Frosy the Snowman, Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town, and The Year Without a Santa Claus. We're visiting the Kingdom of Arendelle for a Disney Animated movie based on Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale “The Snow Queen.” This icy tale makes for perfect pre-holiday viewing, and audiences agreed when they spent over a billion dollars at the box office to see it, making it the highest-grossing film of 2013 and the highest-grossing animated film of all time, at that time. And it wasn't just audiences who felt the magic, critics agreed and the film racked up awards, including two Oscars: Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song. With one sequel already out and another on the way, the franchise featuring the voice talents of Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff, and Josh Gad has become a cultural phenomenon - and Disney clearly has no plans to let it go. Legends of Halloween is back for another spooky season with a throwback from twenty years ago, which is itself a throwback to the classic Universal Monster movies. Director Stephen Sommers had found success five years earlier in reanimating another Universal monster, The Mummy, with the Legend of ‘99 film starring Brendan Fraser. Here he tries to recapture the magic that led to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson's movie career with a Hugh Jackman-starring take on the classics Dracula, Frankenstein, and The Wolf Man. While the resultant film did “stake” a claim at the box office (to the sum of $300 million) it was D.O.A. with film critics (the same ones who hated The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, another literary mash-up released the year prior) and plans for a franchise were quickly buried. We're back with a film about filmmaking, spycraft and celebrity, starring the one and only Nicolas Cage. In the movie, Cage plays a fictionalized version of himself, down on his luck and struggling to connect with his teenage daughter, when a wealthy fan (who may or may not be a kidnapper and arms dealer) makes Cage an offer he can't refuse. Co-starring Pedro Pascal, this two-hander is equal parts bromance, action-comedy, and homage to Cage's lengthy career. And while director Tom Gormican's debut flopped at the box office despite positive reviews, it has become a meme-fueled cult hit in the two years since its release. Now we'll find out if we can withstand - or will we be squashed beneath? - The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent!   For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com   You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. Legends Podcast #690; Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024)

I am awaited! After a long time away, a bombastic veteran makes a triumphant return to the stage that made him famous. I'm talking, of course, about director George Miller, the driving force behind the Mad Max films since the first one hit the gas in 1979. Earlier this year, the latest installment of the Mad Max saga roared into cinemas… but for the first time, Max Rockatansky was not one of the lead characters. Instead, the film focuses on telling the origin story of Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron in the last outing, Fury Road, here played by Anya Taylor-Joy, with Alyla Brown playing her as the child. With many characters familiar to Fury Road fans, this prequel forges enough connective tissue to feel part the saga sans Max, while Chris Hemsworth's Dementus provides a worthy adversary. That said, audiences themselves didn't make the trek to the theater, with the film barely surpassing its production budget at the box office. So what are we to make of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga? Is it a prequel that delivers the goods, or does this doomsday detour deserve to be lost in the Wasteland forever?   For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com   You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. Aug-Heist takes things to the next level with this 2012 thriller about a suicidal man, a stolen diamond, and good old fashioned insurance fraud! With a stacked cast including Sam Worthington, Elizabeth Banks, Anthony Mackie, Jamie Bell, Edward Burns, Kyra Sedgewick, and Ed Harris, the film has all the makings of a genre classic. But it did a bellyflop at the box office and cratered with critics. Was the title a little too “high concept” for audiences, or did the plot twists give viewers vertigo? Don't look down… Aug-Heist will take its last leap for 2024 with Man on a Ledge!   For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com   You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. Legends Podcast #688; Snatch (2000)

Aug-Heist rolls on with a return to the mean streets of London! Following Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, director Guy Ritchie goes back to the well of the seedy underworld of British tough guys with this year 2000 release. Several LS2SB actors come back as well, including Jason Statham, Vinnie Jones, Jason Flemyng, Alan Ford, and the film adds some non-Brits, too, with Brad Pitt, Dennis Farina, and Benico del Toro in the mix. Clearly following the "if it ain't broke, bloke, don't fix it, innit" rule, Ritchie hews closely to the formula of his previous film, but the film was a success both critically and commercial. Audiences ate up Snatch, but when Beef and Rum Daddy sink their teeth into it, anything can happen. Note: Lobster the Mobster (A.K.A. Jonny Two Claws A.K.A. The Singing Shellfish A.K.A. The Crusty Caucasian) is still in Witness Protection as of this recording.    For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com   You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. We're on a brief hiatus this week, so we've plundered the Legends Vault for some appropriate loot to tide you over. Before we score Guy Ritchie's second film, Snatch, we're giving you our review of his first.  This week we're talking about Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, also one of our Legends of ‘99, the movie that launched the acting careers of Jason Statham and Vinnie Jones, began the directing careers of Guy Ritchie and Matthew Vaughn, spawned a short-lived TV series, and, along with The Limey, is the second Legend of ‘99 to heavily employ Cockney rhyming slang. Join us as we have a butcher's at this farcical tale of four friends, two guns, and a whole lot of mistaken identity.   For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com   You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''.
