New England Legends serves up a slice of American history you've probably never tasted before. Jeff Belanger and Ray Auger head to Hartford to uncover the surprising story behind Hartford Election Cake—a massive, 80-pound confection born in 1796 during America's first contested presidential election. Back when voting was a full-blown celebration complete with banquets, parties, and rewards for participation, this legendary cake—based on a recipe by Amelia Simmons—was the ultimate prize. As election day festivities faded over time, Thanksgiving rose to prominence, and Connecticut's favorite cake made a historic move to the holiday table. From politics to pastry, this episode is a delicious reminder that some traditions don't disappear—they just find a new reason to be celebrated. In this episode of the LEGENDS: Podcast by All Day Vinyl interviews legendary songwriter Philip Springer, the composer of the classic Christmas song "Santa Baby" for Eartha Kitt in 1953. Springer recounts his start as a young pianist, his time in the Brill Building, and his early career in the Army playing with Tony Bennett for fellow GIs. He tells the story of writing "Santa Baby" with Joan Javits, the song's controversial reception, and how its popularity resurged after Madonna's 1987 cover. The conversation also covers Springer's work with major artists like Eartha Kitt, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, and Cliff Richard, his ability to adapt during the rock revolution, and later pioneering work in electronic music and synthesizers, including teaching at UCLA. Springer's daughter Tamara discusses her new documentary "More Than Santa Baby," discoveries in his catalog, and the film's themes of perseverance, resilience, and late-life creativity. This episode offers a rich overview of eight decades of music history through one songwriter's remarkable career — from Tin Pan Alley and pop standards to rock, film scores, and electronic innovation.
In 1977, Jim Henson, having found success with The Muppet Show, began experimenting with new technology and storytelling styles in the hopes of developing a feature film. Adapting a children's book by Russell Hoban and Lillian Hoban, itself an adaptation of the classic O. Henry short story "The Gift of Magi," Henson and his production team created a one-hour Christmas special that premiered in Canada on CBC and aired the following year on the then-new HBO channel. Featuring several original songs written by frequent Henson collaborator Paul Williams, subsequent airings on ABC and Nickelodeon, along with home video releases, cemented the quirky special's popularity. Now we're going down to the river to take in the sights and sounds of Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas! And stick around for news and trailers, along with how we plan to spend our Christmas vacations. See you in 2026! In this episode of the Trade Legends podcast, Alex sits down with Sean, founder of Monster Rigs, to unpack the real story behind building a trades brand from the ground up. From starting out on the tools at 16 to navigating recessions, cashflow pressure, product failures, and relentless reinvestment, this is an unfiltered conversation about what it actually takes to build a business in the construction industry.Sean opens up about his journey through carpentry, the post-2008 construction crash in Ireland, and how those brutal years shaped his mindset as an entrepreneur. The discussion dives deep into product development, manufacturing costs, sampling, branding mistakes, social media growth, and why most people massively underestimate the time, money, and sacrifice required to launch a physical product brand. This episode pulls no punches on the reality of working long nights, reinvesting every penny, and still staying on the tools while trying to grow a company. The conversation also tackles bigger topics affecting trades and small business owners today, including apprenticeships, influencer culture in construction, brand loyalty, government policy, taxation, recession fears, and why chasing quick money almost always ends badly. Sean explains why lt Monster Rigs, not followers.#Tradesman #SmallBusiness #tradelegends #toolbelts
In the year 2000, the estate of children's author Theodor Geisel, better known by his pen name Dr. Seuss, sold the live-action movie rights to one of the writer's most beloved works. Decades earlier, an animated television special brought to life, via the voice of Boris Karloff and the talents of Chuck Jones, the cranky green curmudgeon known simply as The Grinch. With a plot to steal Christmas from the irrepressibly cheerful Whos of Whoville, the Grinch and his dog Max discover the true meaning of the holiday in this perennial holiday viewing favorite. After a rocky production, director Ron Howard reimagined the cartoon in living color with Jim Carrey donning yellow contact lenses and a dyed-green yak fur suit as The Grinch. The movie, despite mixed reviews, was box office gold, becoming the highest-grossing film of the year and taking home an Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. But will our hosts' hearts grow three sizes today? Or will we be the mean ones to say that the How the Grinch Stole Christmas ruined Christmas? WHO CAN SAY? Jeff Belanger and Ray Auger revisit a murder nearly two centuries old — a killing so brutal it shook the quiet town of Chepachet, Rhode Island to its core. The crime of May 26, 1826 left such a deep scar on the community that a plaque still stands today, marking the very spot where blood was spilled. And every year since, the town gathers to remember the tragedy in a surprisingly BIG way. What happened that day? And why does this grim anniversary continue to loom so large in Chepachet's history? Jeff and Ray dig into the clues left behind. In 1984, producer Steven Spielberg, writer Chris Columbus, and director Joe Dante brought a new breed of cuddly creatures to the big screen, hoping to draw in fans of other odd critters like Yoda and E.T. The star of this film is the adorable "mogwai" (Chinese for "devil") named Gizmo, who propagates some very odd offspring that terrorize a small town on Christmas Eve. Released the same weekend as Ghostbusters, this horror-comedy was a hit with audiences, earning $212 million on an $11 million budget. The flick spawned a 1990 sequel, subtitled The New Batch, and a TV series, with a forthcoming third film, Secrets of the Mogwai, in the works. On the merchandising side, the Gizmo plush became an instant hit as one of the top toys of Christmas '84. And, of course, there were plenty of knock-offs, from Critters, to Munchies, to Ghoulies. Perhaps most notably, the film's violence and gore, packaged in family-friendly wrapping paper, led to the creation of a new MPAA rating category: PG-13. But forty-one years later, are we still going gaga for Gremlins? Or have these vicious vermin overstayed their welcome like unruly in-laws at the holidays? In this episode of the LEGENDS: Podcast by All Day Vinyl, host Scott Dudelson sits down with singer-songwriter Lee Michaels, writer/performer of the 1971 hit “Do You Know What I Mean.” Beyond that blue-eyed soul classic, Michaels built one of the most unconventional careers in music history. A bona fide late-'60s/early-'70s rockstar, Michaels sold out major venues, scored chart success, jammed with Jimi Hendrix, shared bills with Led Zeppelin, and played a key role in the development of the San Francisco scene alongside bands like Jefferson Airplane and Moby Grape. Burned out creatively, he walked away from the industry in the mid-'70s and reinvented himself—finding new success as a world class boxing manager, restaurateur and AI innovator, with stories from these times just as wild as his music years. Cameron Crowe devotes a full chapter to Michaels in The Uncool; this conversation digs deeper into a singular, surprising legacy that Crowe praised so heavily in his book. This episode contains personal stories and recollections shared by Lee Michaels and the views and accounts are based on his own historical remembrances. Shoaib shares the inside story in which cover teams worked together to seize stolen tools and make arrests. He also exposes the loopholes criminals exploit, including recycling police auction receipts to sell stolen tools as “legit,” and the shocking truth about big influencers who refused to support the fight. We also explore what needs to change: van security, police involvement, government action, petitions, and how tradespeople can protect themselves moving forward. Whether you're a builder, electrician, plumber, roofer, landscaper, or anyone working in the trade, this episode is essential viewing. Tool theft isn't just a crime — it's destroying businesses, families, and mental health across the UK. In 1946, director Frank Capra brought to the big screen the tale of George Bailey of Bedford Falls, in an inversion of the Charles Dickens classic A Christmas Carol. Instead of teaching a miserly villain the error of his ways by showing him his life's low points, Capra revealed that a good man's good deeds prove one man's life has worth beyond measure. Starring Jimmy Stewart, Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore, and Henry Travers as the angel Clarence Oddbody, this film initially received mixed reviews and was unsuccessful at the box office, despite the fact that it was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Without significant interest, the film's copyright in the U.S. expired in 1974 and it entered the public domain, allowing it to be broadcast without licensing or royalty fees. Broadcast at almost no cost by local television stations, the film grew to become an annual Christmas classic. Turning 80 next year, it is now regarded as one of the greatest movies ever made, but will inconsistent streaming options and copyright issues make us wish this movie had never been filmed? Now we're getting the holiday spirit in the hopes of proving that It's a Wonderful Life after all! For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. Fall back in time with Legends Podcast! All month long, we're talking about time travel, paradoxes, and if my calculations are correct, when this baby hits 88 miles per hour... you're gonna see some serious shit! Forty years ago, director Robert Zemeckis and writer Bob Gale, partnering with Steven Spielberg as producer, introduced one of the most iconic time machines to ever grace the big screen: Doc Brown's DeLorean. But the road to bringing it to life was rocky - their pitch was rejected more than forty times, and when it was finally greenlit, it had a tiny budget, and their dream lead actor, Michael J. Fox, wasn't available. Once the cameras rolled, they quickly realized that their replacement lead, Eric Stoltz, wasn't working out. After a series of false starts, the movie ended up performing well with test audiences, and in a sign of confidence, the studio, Universal, ended up moving up the release date to July 3rd, leaving almost no time to finish the movie's special effects. Nevertheless, the result was a hit. It became the highest-grossing film of 1985, won three Oscars, spawned two sequels, an animated series, and a musical, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made. Now we're embracing our density, er, destiny and ending time travel month with one of the best to ever do it. We're going Back to the Future… and this is Chronovember! Jeff Belanger and Ray Auger head to Goffstown, New Hampshire, where every fall the Piscataquog River transforms into one of New England's strangest racetracks. For 25 years, locals have carved out giant pumpkins, climbed inside, and paddled them like boats in a regatta that has become the stuff of legend. But how did this wonderfully weird tradition begin? Jeff and Ray slip back through the decades to uncover the origins of a festival that turned a humble pumpkin patch into an unforgettable piece of Granite State folklore. Fall back in time with Legends Podcast! All month long, we're talking about time travel, paradoxes, and Andre Braugher aging like a fine wine. In the year 2000, Primal Fear and Fallen director Gregory Hoblit and writer Toby Emmerich brought a new twist to the time travel genre: using ham radio to connect two generations of a New York City family. Dennis Quaid plays the father, a firefighter, and Jim Caviezel plays the son, a cop, who realize that their special connection can change both their lives. But when things change for the better, a serial killer is set loose, threatening both timelines. The film was a modest success and was later remade as a one-season TV series on The CW. But is this time travel thriller worth tuning in to these 25 years later? Through the curtain of the aurora, our hosts are broadcasting on Frequency! This is Chronovember! Wynn revisits the band's origins in early-1980s Los Angeles, tracing how punk energy and the Paisley Underground scene shaped their sound and the band's first rehearsal at Dennis Duck's house in 1982, which set the creative direction leading to their classic debut The Days of Wine & Roses. The conversation dives deep into the making of Medicine Show after signing with A&M Records — from working with producer Sandy Pearlman and experimenting with slower, more dynamic arrangements to enduring five grueling months of recording that strained band relationships. Wynn reflects on the record's darker, Southern-Gothic-inspired lyrics born from life on the road. They also explore the band's major tours (opening for U2 and touring with R.E.M.), lineup changes, near breakups, and eventual reunions that produced new albums and a revitalized modern lineup. Wynn opens up about the long legal battle to reclaim the Medicine Show masters, the 35-year reversion process that made this reissue possible, and what fans can expect from the deluxe box set — including remasters, live shows, rehearsal tapes, and rarities. He also explains why the original album remains unavailable on streaming despite the reissue. Thank you for tuning in! Fall back in time with Legends Podcast! All month long, we're talking about time travel, paradoxes, and separating out the things that are pleasant from the things that are unpleasant. In 1998, Big and Dave screenwriter Gary Ross made his directorial debut with a quirky comedy starring Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon. The young up-and-coming stars were cast opposite stalwarts William H. Macy, Joan Allen, Jeff Daniels, and J.T. Walsh in a romp through classic television - literally. When a mischievous TV repairman (played, of course, by sitcom legend Don Knotts) sends the Ninties teens into a Fifties Leave It To Beaver knock-off, things only get stranger when their modern sensibilities start turning the black-and-white town all sorts of newfangled colors. Despite positive reviews and a first-place opening weekend, the film ultimately failed to enchant audiences and became a box office flop. Now we're tuning in to see what all the hubbub is about in Pleasantville. But does it belong in reruns, or should we burn every copy we find? This is Chronovember! The SD SportScene Legends Podcast Season 1 Episode 4: Guest is former Bowdle multi-sport athlete Ron Stotz.
It's Lobster's birthday, and what better way to acknowledge the toll aging takes on our bodies than to watch a movie about what goes wrong when we try to cheat the clock. From writer-director Coralie Fargeat comes the tale of Elizabeth Sparkle, a former sex symbol and acclaimed actress turned daytime tv aerobics instructor. When a mysterious treatment offers to restore her youthful appearance, the realization that beauty is only skin deep is only the first of many horrors that await. Starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley in dual roles, this 2024 release burst onto the scene at Cannes, where it was nominated for the Palme d'Or and Fargeat won Best Screenplay. After a wide release, which saw the film bring in $80 million through word-of-mouth social media marketing, it earned five Oscar noms, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress for Moore, taking home the statue for Best Makeup & Hairstyling. But appearance isn't everything, so let's take a long hard look in the mirror and decide if we like what we see. Is The Substance all style, and no substance? Or is it the stuff that dreams are made of? And for Legends of Halloween, that means it's also the stuff of nightmares! In this episode of the LEGENDS: Podcast by All Day Vinyl, host Scott Dudelson sits down with Andy McCluskey, singer and co-founder of Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), for a conversation that blends history, creativity, and reflection. Speaking on the heels of OMD's recent 2025 U.S. tour and the 40th anniversary reissue of Crush, Andy offers an inside look at what it took for the band to break into the American market after years of reinvention. Andy recalls the intense late nights recording Crush with producer Stephen Hague, and how the experimental chaos of Dazzle Ships led OMD to regroup and redefine their sound through Junk Culture and Crush. He details the band's distinctive creative process—from tape loops and early samplers like the Emulator and Fairlight to the unique textures that shaped tracks like “Secret” and the Japanese-inspired title song. Throughout the episode, Andy shares behind-the-scenes moments that shaped OMD's legacy: writing “If You Leave” at the last minute for Pretty in Pink, the bittersweet radio life of “Secret,” and the political spark behind “88 Seconds in Greensboro.” He also reflects on OMD's roots—early Liverpool gigs, lifelong friendships, and the art and imagery (including Edward Hopper's influence on the Crush cover) that helped define their identity. The conversation closes with a look ahead at OMD's plans for future touring and new music—proof that even after four decades, Andy's passion for innovation and melody remains as sharp as ever. In this episode of the LEGENDS: Podcast by All Day Vinyl, host Scott Dudelson sits down with Rock and Roll Hall of Famer inductee and Eagles co-founder Bernie Leadon for a rare conversation about his experience laying the ground-work for the country rock genre and his first solo album in over 20 years, Too Late to Be Cool, produced by the legendary Glyn Johns. Bernie opens up about how rejoining the Eagles on tour reignited his creativity, the years he spent building his own home studio, and the disciplined songwriting routine that led to this long-awaited record. In this episode we also go deep into Bernie's formative years — from San Diego and Gainesville to Los Angeles — with a focus on exploring his time in Hearts and Flowers, Dillard & Clark, and the Flying Burrito Brothers. Along the way, Bernie recalls collaborations with Gene Clark, Chris Hillman, and Gram Parsons that helped lay the foundation for country rock. He also shares the story behind re-using a 45-year-old Henry Diltz photo for the album cover and why working again with Glyn Johns felt like coming full circle. The episode is packed with behind-the-scenes stories: wild nights at the Troubadour, the Dillard & Clark's infamous onstage meltdown, the formation and early days with The Eagles and how Bernie's own songs ultimately became Eagles classics. Twenty years ago, director Ridley Scott returned to the historical epic, the same genre that won him an Oscar in 2000 for Gladiator. Swapping the Roman colosseum for the Middle East in the time of the Crusades, Scott assembled an all-star cast including Orlando Bloom, Eva Green, Jeremy Irons, David Thewlis, Brendan Gleeson, Liam Neeson, and an uncredited Edward Norton. A post-9/11 movie about Christians fighting Muslims would have seemed an easy win at the box office, but the film performed poorly stateside while doing well in Arabic-speaking countries, especially Egypt. Scott blamed the failure on studio meddling; he has since disowned the theatrical cut, and claims instead that his director's cut is the definitive version. But art, like peace in the Middle East, can be elusive. Join us as we walk into battle with the Lord for Kingdom of Heaven. Welcome to The Legends Podcast by All Day Vinyl, hosted by Scott Dudelson — where iconic musicians share the untold stories behind the music that shaped generations. In this powerful episode, Scott is joined by legendary drummer & artist Dave Getz, best known as an original member of Big Brother and the Holding Company, the groundbreaking band that forever changed the face of rock and roll alongside the incomparable Janis Joplin. From growing up in Brooklyn and absorbing early jazz influences, to finding himself at the heart of San Francisco's psychedelic explosion, David traces his remarkable journey through one of the most revolutionary periods in American music history. What began as a pursuit of painting at art school soon gave way to an unexpected path—one that led to packed clubs on Haight Street, cultural upheaval, and the thunderous sound of a new era being born. David opens up about what it was like to collaborate with Janis Joplin, and how their raw, emotional chemistry fueled Big Brother's explosive energy on stage and in the studio. He recounts the behind-the-scenes process of recording the band's landmark album Cheap Thrills—a record that didn't just capture a moment, but defined a generation. Listeners will hear intimate reflections on the band's iconic performance at the Monterey Pop Festival, their battles with the mainstream record industry, and the tension between artistic freedom and commercial pressure. David speaks candidly about the band's highs and lows, the tragedy of Janis's passing, and the legacy they all helped shape. But this is more than a trip through the past—David is still creating, still pushing forward. The episode also highlights his recent solo release, Anthems, Themes, and Little Stories—an evocative collection of music that blends storytelling, poetry, and musicianship honed over a lifetime. His ongoing work as a visual artist and composer reflects a restless creative spirit that refuses to be confined to any one era or medium. It's a movie that reimagines one of the most iconic superheroes in history — not with grit and gloom, but with plastic bricks, rapid-fire jokes, and a whole lot of heart. Directed by Chris McKay and released in 2017, this animated spin-off features a voice cast that's nothing short of legendary: Will Arnett as the brooding and self-absorbed Batman / Bruce “Bruno” Wayne, Michael Cera as the wide-eyed Robin, Rosario Dawson as the fierce Barbara Gordon/Batgirl, Ralph Fiennes as the ever-wise Alfred, and Zach Galifianakis as the Joker who really just wants to be in some kind of a weird love/hate homo-erotic relationship with the Bat. It's a story about loneliness, ego, and the power of teamwork — all wrapped in a whirlwind of Bat-gadgets, pop culture references, and surprise villain cameos. So what movie are we talking about today? The Lego Batman Movie. What's the password? IRONMAN SUCKS For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. In this episode of New England Legends, Jeff Belanger and Ray Auger chase the eerie tale of a phantom dog said to roam the shoreline.
