Welcome to LEGENDS: Podcast by All Day Vinyl, hosted by Scott Dudelson. In this episode, we sit down with a true icon of American rock—Mark Farner, the unmistakable voice, guitarist, and songwriting powerhouse behind Grand Funk Railroad. Mark takes us deep into the early days of Grand Funk, sharing vivid stories of the band's meteoric rise and the making of their first groundbreaking albums. He also reflects on unforgettable collaborations with music legends like Ringo Starr, Frank Zappa, and other heroes of rock history. Farner opens up about the spirit and soul behind the music—the raw energy of Grand Funk's explosive live shows, and how both the industry and his personal journey have evolved over the years. We also explore Mark's latest solo release, Closer To My Home, produced by Mark Slaughter (of the band Slaughter). He discusses the spiritual and emotional core of the record, a project rooted in love, forgiveness, and faith—and how his creative bond with Slaughter helped bring it to life. More than a conversation about music, this episode is a reflection on resilience, unity, and the power of song to uplift and inspire. Whether you're a lifelong Grand Funk Railroad fan or just discovering Farner's solo work, this is a rare and revealing conversation with one of rock and roll's most soulful voices. If you enjoy this episode, don't forget to like, rate, and subscribe.
Director Ryan Coogler and actor Michael B. Jordan have cashed in on teaming up over the past decade, from Coogler's debut Fruitvale Station, to Black Panther, to Creed. This 2025 film, their fifth collaboration, sees Coogler double down on Michael B. Jordan - quite literally. Set in the 1932 Mississippi Delta, this genre-defying film sees Jordan play twin brothers who seek to open their own juke joint, only to be threatened by a clan of vampires. The film co-stars Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku, Jack O'Connell, Jayme Lawson, Delroy Lindo and introduces singer Miles Caton in his first film role. Earning $365 million at the box office to date, it is one of the best-received films of the year so far and an early contender for an Oscar nomination. Fifty years ago, the summer blockbuster was born. Director Steven Spielberg, in his second official turn at the helm, adapted Peter Benchley's best-selling novel about a New England resort town plagued by a great white shark. Despite production delays and budget overruns, this $9 million “high-concept” thriller starring Roy Schneider, Robert Shaw, and Richard Dreyfus took a $477.9 million bite out of the box office and became the highest-grossing film of all time, until the release of Star Wars two years later. Spawning multiple sequels and imitations, this film remains the undisputed master of the seas. But will our hosts fall hook, line, and sinker for Jaws? Ten years ago, 2015 was the year of the epic Western. Two films, Alejandro Iñárritu's The Revenant and Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight, clocked in at an average length of 170 minutes and scored a combined 15 Academy Award nominations, winning 4 between them. As a pair, the two films brought in nearly $700 million at the box office. Along with John Maclean's Sundance darling Slow West, the year marked a return to prominence of the western genre, foreshadowing the next decade's breakout hits like Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone and Hell or High Water, and Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon. Slipping somewhat under the radar in 2015 was the directorial debut of S. Craig Zahler, a prolific author and screenwriter with a penchant for wit, grit, and gore. Zahler cast Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, Matthew Fox, and Richard Jenkins in a Western akin to John Ford's The Searchers by way of Wes Craven's The Hills Have Eyes. When townsfolk are kidnapped by a clan of troglodyte cannibals, four men - the sheriff, a cowboy, a gunslinger, and the back-up deputy - ride out as a posse to rescue them. The indie film quickly earned praise for its direction, dialogue, and disturbing imagery, and has built a cult following in the decade hence. But is our posse of hosts in agreement on how Bone Tomahawk lands? Or will we, too, be split down the middle? Director Joe Johnston, who worked in design and VFX for George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, is best known for effects-heavy family pics like Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, The Rocketeer, and Jumanji. But in 1999, he tried his hand at the “based on a true story” inspirational biopic genre, based on the early life of NASA engineer Homer Hickam, as told in Hickam's memoir Rocket Boys. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Chris Cooper, Chris Owen, and Laura Dern, the film tells the story of a coal miner's son who was inspired by the launch of Sputnik in 1957 to take up rocketry with a group of friends against his father's wishes. A critical and commercial success, the anagramically-titled October Sky sounds stellar. But over two decades later, does it still shoot for the moon, or is it a dud? One of last year's most puzzling releases came in the form of a musical biopic chronicling the rise to fame of British pop star Robbie Williams. While following all the usual biopic tropes, this film made one rather noticeable swerve by portraying its star and subject as an anthropomorphic CGI chimpanzee. With Williams providing the narration and singing and Jonno Davies providing the voice and motion capture, the film, directed by The Greatest Showman's Michael Gracey, never acknowledges this species-bending premise while playing it straight. Despite Robbie Williams' mega-stardom in the UK, audiences didn't swing into theaters to see it there, or in the States where he's far less well known: the $110 million dollar flick only brought in $22.5 million at the box office. Critics, however, were mostly kind to the film, which received a record-breaking 16 nominations at the 2025 Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards, winning in nine categories, including Best Film. Director Francis Ford Coppola is widely regarded as one of the greatest directors of the twentieth century, the visionary force behind The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, and dozens of other films. For decades, Coppola had sought to make a film drawing parallels between the fall of the Roman Republic and the future of the United States by retelling the Catilinarian conspiracy in modern New York, but was unable to secure studio funding. After three decades of fits and starts, Coppola ultimately spent $120 million of his own money to make the film, drawn largely from the fortune he made in the winemaking business. Released in fall of 2024, the ensemble cast features Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, and Laurence Fishburne. After a troubled production and a rocky reception at Cannes, where the film premiered, Coppola was forced to spend additional money to market the film, but the trailer was removed for using fabricated pull quotes. Ultimately, the film grossed only $14.3 million at the box office - barely 10% of what it cost to make. But is this film - the ultimate vanity project - worth the wait or does it collapse under the weight of its own ambitions? All roads lead to Megalopolis! We're continuing our journey on the open road this month with a classic Disney movie released three decades ago. In this film, a father and son come to terms with the circle of life while realizing the importance of being prepared to face the challenges of a road trip. Far from meaning “no worries” for the son (who wants to feel the love tonight with his crush), the efforts of the father (who just can't wait to be king of the road) to reconnect with his son lead to a veritable stampede of sight gags, one-liners, and comedies-of-error. No, it's not The Lion King! Based on the Disney Afternoon cartoon series Goof Troop, produced by Jeffrey Katzenberg, and featuring the voice talents of Bill Farmer, Jason Marsden, Jim Cummings, Kellie Martin, and Rob Paulsen, it was a massive flop on release and was critically panned. But in the thirty years since, it has gone on to become a cult classic, with a direct-to-video sequel in the year 2000, multiple pop-culture references (including in Donald Glover's Atlanta), and a documentary, Not Just a Goof, released just this month. Ladies and goofs, it's A Goofy Movie! But will we be seeing it “I 2 I”? For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. It's Tax Day, and we're celebrating the fiscal cycle with a movie that gets physical. A film that puts the “internal” from “internal injuries” in the Internal Revenue Service. The flick that proves pocket protectors can be cool and no one will make fun of you for wearing them if you also carry a really big gun. Ben Affleck stars, the same year he donned the Bat-Mantle in Batman V Superman, alongside Jon Bernthal, Anna Kendrick, J.K. Simmons, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, John Lithgow, Jean Smart, and Jeffrey Tambor. In the film, Affleck plays an autistic CPA who is also a master assassin. Written by Ozark creator Bill Dubuque and directed by Gavin O'Connor, the film rightly drew criticism for “cripface” - casting a non-disabled actor to play a person with a disability - the film performed well at the box office and earned a sequel, which premiered last month at SXSW and goes wide later this month. But when the bill comes due, is The Accountant merely a paint-by-numbers affair, is it guilty of fraud, or does it add up to more than the sum of its parts? We're back from ITHACON, but we mustn't dwell, no, not today! We can't! Not on Rex Manning Day! We're rewinding to 1995 at the height of the record store boom. Directed by Allan Moyle and written by Carol Heikkinen, with an ensemble cast including Anthony LaPaglia, Maxwell Caulfield, Debi Mazar, Rory Cochrane, Johnny Whitworth, Robin Tunney, Renée Zellweger, and Liv Tyler, this comedy follows a group of record store employees through a wild twenty-four hours on that particular April 8th. Unfortunately, the film bombed spectacularly at the box office and was panned by critics at the time of release, but its eclectic soundtrack and stacked cast of future stars have made it into something of a cult favorite in the intervening years. But is this flick really The Breakfast Club for Elder Millennials, or does Empire Records belong in the bargain bin? Some claim it was a simple colonial windmill, but others insist it predates Columbus, built by Viking explorers centuries earlier.
