Today on Too Opinionated, singer Zara Phillips comes back for another visit. Somebody's Daughter - and the 2018 book and 2022 one-woman show the film is based on – focusses on Zara's personal journey of overcoming early addiction, navigating her life and meeting her birth father after many years and struggles after connecting with her birth mother. The project's true driving force is tofacilitate honest, vulnerable conversations about adoption. Too many people, she says, are ignoring these important issues. In addition to acting and writing, Zara is also a talented singer and songwriter who launched her career in the 80s, appearing in music videos and providing backing vocals on tour with Bob Geldof, Matt Bianco, David Essex and Nick Kamen. While taking some years away from creative endeavors to raise a family, she came back strong in the 2000s, releasing two albums(When The Rain Stops and You. Me & Us) produced by Ted Perlman, whose multi-faceted musical resume includes Whitney Houston, Bob Dylan and Chicago; earning a Best Homegrown Documentary honor for her 2008 film Roots Unknown at the Garden State Film Festival; and publishing in 2008 her first book Mother Me, a compelling memoir about her ongoing struggles as an adoptee now raising a family of her own. A few years later, Zara's song “I'm Legit,” co-written with Darryl McDaniels (DMC of Run-DMC), was a successful single in the adoption world and beyond. In 2014, Zara's one woman show Beneath My Father's Sky, directed by Eliza and Eric Roberts won Best Direction at NYC's United Solo Festival and was performed in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Connecticut and London in 2016. During this era, she was presented with an Angel in Adoption Award by the Congressional Coalition of Adoption Institute. Her most recent album, released in 2020, is Meditation and Kitkats, and she currently tours and performs with her husband, British folk-rock legend Richard Thompson, who scored Somebody's Daughter. Eric & Eliza RobertsTake a walk with me down Fascination Street, as I get to know Eric & Eliza Roberts. You know Eric from over 800 acting projects: including The Pope Of Greenwich Village, Runaway Train, The Specialist, The Righteous Gemstones, Star 80, King of the Gypsies, and several hundred more. You know his wife Eliza from many, many projects like: The Howdy Doody Show, Animal House, Lois & Clark, and Dr. Who; as well as casting and producing in a myriad of other film and television projects. In this episode, we get to know where and how each of them grew up, and what got them into the industry. We also get to hear their love story. I love finding out how couples met, and this is a great story! Next, we launch into everything from movies and TV shows, and their experiences on those sets. Eliza shares stories of trying to help spouses & girlfriends of actors feel more comfortable with their partners doing love scenes. Eric shares behind the scenes stories on the sets of The Specialist (with Sylvester Stallone), and The Expendables. Eric then gets Eliza to share stories of helping get George Clooney cast in E.R, and even helping to convince John Travolta to accept his role in Quinton Tarantino's Pulp Fiction! We discuss Eliza's kids (Eric's step kids); one has Pi Bakeshop in Los Angeles, and the other is a VERY accomplished musician. Naturally, we discuss Eric's experiences on the most recent season of Dancing With The Stars, and Eliza explains how KISS's Gene Simmons helped shorten Eric's time in the competition. Lastly, we talk about the book! 'Runaway Train: Or, The Story Of My Life So Far' is Eric Robert's memoir (with Sam Kashner). We chat about why he decided to write the book, and how much help Eliza was in getting him to do it, and actually getting it made. This is a real Hollywood POWER COUPLE! They share the workload, and the credit. It was super sweet getting to see them pass the credit to each other.

On this week's episode of the Forgotten Filmcast we take a look at a film from writer/director Larry Cohen. Eric Roberts, James Earl Jones, Janine Turner, and even Stan Lee show up in 1990's The Ambulance. Bubbawheat from It's Time to Rewind is our guest as we discuss this forgotten thriller. We also have our movie recommendations and our trivia game!

Our discussion highlights not only his impressive body of work but also the challenges and triumphs he faced while navigating the industry. Spider shares how he kicked off his career by selling his first film at just 23 and how he has managed to maintain his momentum through continually adapting to the shifting landscape of Hollywood. We explore the creative journey behind "Down Below," which features an impressive cast including Eric Roberts and Doug Jones. Spider recounts the unique production timeline, taking over two years to complete due to the pandemic's impact on shooting schedules and actor availability. He candidly discusses the learning experiences that shaped this project, highlighting the importance of resilience and the drive to see a vision come to life despite numerous hurdles. The conversation touches on the value of storytelling over production quality. Spider emphasizes that despite working with tight budgets, prioritizing a strong narrative can profoundly impact audience engagement. This philosophy led him to focus on producing feature films rather than getting bogged down by the often fruitless pursuit of financing high-quality short films. His experiences reinforce the notion that creating compelling stories is the true essence of filmmaking and essential for burgeoning creators seeking to break into the industry. Spider reflects on the importance of maintaining momentum in creative endeavors. He explains how staying in constant motion—be it through writing multiple scripts or navigating opportunities—can prevent the stagnation that often leads to discouragement. He provides practical advice for aspiring filmmakers, encouraging them to follow their passion projects while being open to industry trends, especially the growing market for horror films. As a passionate advocate for connection in the filmmaking community, Spider highlights the significance of mentorship and the role of his family in his journey. We discuss how crucial relationships and collaborations are to fostering growth and creativity within the industry. Spyder discusses his film's distribution strategy, with "Down Below" now available on streaming platforms like Tubi and Roku. Spider expresses hope for future international distribution, reflecting his continued commitment to sharing his work with audiences worldwide. This episode is not only a testament to Spider's impressive accomplishments but also serves as an inspiring reminder of the determination and adaptability essential for success in the ever-evolving entertainment landscape. As she celebrates the release of her extraordinary autobiographical film Somebody's Daughter, Zara Phillips offers up some tough love truths that fly in the face of the often cheery, sanitized way adopted children (and other beings) are depicted in Disney films and other media. From her years of advocacy, studying contemporary sociological research and personal experiences as an adopted person herself, the passionate lifelong advocate for adoptees knows that even well into adulthood, their existential struggles of feeling like outsiders with little known stories of their history and birth parents makes them at least four times more likely to attempt suicide. They are also much more inclined to turn to addiction as a coping mechanism, as Zara did in her teens and early 20s. Somebody's Daughter - and the 2018 book and 2022 one-woman show the film is based on – focusses on Zara's personal journey of overcoming early addiction, navigating her life and meeting her birth father after many years and struggles after connecting with her birth mother. Due to evacuating from the Los Angeles fires, for the first time ever in our 5 year run as a show, we were unable to deliver a new weekly episode. Instead, please enjoy this unlocked bonus episode from our Patreon vaults of one of our favorite things we watched in 2024. We are actually working on our special 5 year anniversary roundup/clip show, so we'll be back soon with brand new content. Thanks so much for your support! --- One of the most bizarre and singular pieces of Christian media we've ever watched is this dreamlike documentary from the minds of father/daughter writer/director team Derek and Vanessa Frank, who assembled some of the biggest names in Christian film history to shake the Protestant Reformation down to the “demonic conspiracy” at its very core: the anti-Semitic teachings of Martin Luther and John Calvin. In LET THE LION ROAR, Kevin Sorbo, Stephen Baldwin, Eric Roberts, John Schneider, and young up-and-comer Ben Davies star as 16th-century European historical figures who don funny hats and monologue their virulently anti-Semitic views to the camera for extended scenes, some lasting for several minutes at a time. Writer Derek Frank believes that the major weakness that plagues Protestantism is its insufficient respect for the Jewish faith and an unwillingness for the Christian church to become fully “grafted into Israel.” Mr. Frank has written five more “theses,” to add to Martin Luther's famous 95 Theses of 1517, that propose full deference to Jews from Protestants that he hopes will heal Christianity and save it from vague, unitarian sluggishness that he reads as weakness. This is an ambitious and extremely boring goal to try to sell to an audience, but the Franks make it fun with uncanny corporate stock footage and a series of costume changes that make Derek Frank look like the Architect from The Matrix, if that character were a hardcore Zionist. In general, Derek Frank's extreme passion for his case of “finishing” the Protestant Reformation is what sells this documentary — he gazes directly at the audience severely like a cat that has just cornered a mouse and wants to talk to it about Israel for an hour before dealing the death blow that will wipe it out of existence forever. The Lion of Judah is a lion after all, and Derek Frank teaches us that to hammer your point home, you must approach your argument with the ferocity of an apex predator. #Usher reveals his intense workout routine and why his abs are feeling the burn!
Whether people like comic books, comic book movies, or comic book characters, we all share a deep passion for tales of heroism that makes the world a better place. That's probably why comic book store Mike (played by Jesse Metcalfe of "Desperate Housewives") and new-kid-in-town Brandon (newcomer Micah Giovanni) take such a liking to each other. From writer/director Jonathan L. Bowen, "The Comic Shop" co-stars Tristan Mays ("MacGyver") as Mike's loyal employee Alex, who may have to take a job at a rival store when her hours get cut; Trevor Einhorn ("The Magicians", "Mad Men") as the spoiled and scheming rival store owner; and with cameos from Eric Roberts and Scott "Carrot Top" Thompson. Bowen's story frames the emotional journey of the characters against the backdrop of their love for indie comics and the unique community of creators and fans who often struggle to find a place in a market dominated by Marvel and DC. Shot on location in Las Vegas, "The Comic Shop" is a slice-of-life love letter to comic fans that general audiences will easily relate to. "The Comic Shop" reminds us that the best sources of inspiration are those around us who are willing to risk it all to help us find our way.

A review of A Complete Unknown with Timothee Chalamet as Bob Dylan turns into a riff about Cheech and Eric Roberts in Rude Awakening, Val Kilmer as Jim Morrison, Oliver Stone, and, for some reason, Year of the Dragon, with bonus quick review of Jude Law in The Order to close it out.
THIS WEEK: A Magic Christmas (2014), A Christmas Eve Miracle (2015) and A Husband for Christmas (2016)Somewhere along the line, noted shirtless hunk afficionado David DeCoteau was co-opted into the bland holiday film industry. This merits our attention. Steven Paul doesn't merit anyone's attention, but we're still talking about him. The stars are all here: Vivica A. Fox! Eric Roberts! Burt Reynolds! Jon Voight! In this exclusive interview, we sit down with director Jonathan L. Bowen to discuss his heartfelt film, The Comic Shop. Whether you're a comic book fan or simply someone who loves a good story about heroism, Bowen's film captures the power of passion, perseverance, and the unexpected bonds that form in the most unlikely of circumstances. The Comic Shop follows Mike (Jesse Metcalfe) as he faces the tough reality of keeping his comic book store afloat, and Brandon (Micah Giovanni), a newcomer who forms a friendship with Mike while grappling with his own struggles at home. Together, they navigate the challenges of life, love, and comic books, with some inspiring moments along the way. Join us as Bowen shares insights into the film's emotional journey, the characters' growth, and the themes of community, passion, and the comic book culture that inspired the story. We also dive into Bowen's own upbringing and what shaped his love for storytelling, as well as the films and experiences that influenced his creative vision for The Comic Shop. The film also stars Tristan Mays, Trevor Einhorn, and features cameos from Eric Roberts and Scott “Carrot Top” Thompson. From Desperate Housewives to MacGyver, Metcalfe delivers a standout performance as Mike, bringing depth to a character whose fight for survival mirrors the larger struggle of indie comics and those who champion them. Shot in Las Vegas, The Comic Shop is a love letter to comic fans and a reminder that heroism can be found in the people around us, risking it all to help us find our way. Last chance to hear Brandon's original theme song about Doug! But also, all of us speaking emphatically about bad movies, good movies, and about talking about movies. We touch a little more on Eric Roberts and Doug's other podcasting ventures and and and... I forget. Many things. We had fun. Hope you do too. Now we just gotta rope Liam on here. And now all the other stuff I wrote the first time: But, Doug Tilley's back! One of the first guests on this feed something like 9-10 years ago, he actually turned on this camera this time and told us all about Canada, Eric Roberts, 80s local news anchors in Detroit, and the other usual Doug Tilley things. This'll probably be three parts because we're not Blank Check and we respect you enough to not put up 3 hour episodes. Check out Doug's main podcasting project at Cinema Smorgasbord with his buddy, Cinepunx cofounder (and former guest here) Liam O'Donnell. A spinoff or evolution or whatever of their original podcast, Eric Roberts is the Fucking Man, Cinema Smorgasbord covers a whole host of other actors and filmmakers that will make you tepidly exclaim, "Oh yeah, that guy(/lady)!" Or, if the last 30 years of Eric Roberts vehicles is too high budget for you, dig deep into the stone ages of podcasting with his 13-year-old(!) podcast No Budget Nightmares with his old friend Moe Porne. Can you believe that shit is still active? I suppose I can since these are the only movie podcasts I ever listen to. Speaking of movies that look like shit, did I mention I made a thing with The Smudge (sort of) about midwest noise festivals? Well, you can look at the trailer for that here and eventually we'll have a DVD you can purchase.

WE'RE ALMOST THERE, FOLKS! We've made it through EIGHT seasons of this bullshit. To celebrate, we talk through the highs and lows, say goodbye(?) to a few characters, and fill out a superlative grid. It's the Season 2 Recap, ya dummies.Alex Diamond, David Kenny, and John McDaniel heard that the long-running network sitcom Family Matters ends with side character Steve Urkel going to space. And the best way to figure out how that happened - obviously - is to watch the last episode first and make our way backwards through nearly ten years of television.Join our countdown to number one (and our slow descent into madness) in all the places you expect internet people to be: Website: jumpingtheshuttle.spaceEmail: jumpingtheshuttle@gmail.comInstagram: @JumpingTheShuttle / @ThatAlexD / @dak577Twitter: @JumpingShuttle / @ThatAlexD / @dak577TikTok: @JumpingTheShuttle / @ThatAlexD / @dak577Brought to you by Smooth My Balls
