La Fórmula 1 vuelve a Sepang nueve años después de su última carrera, aunque oficialmente no lo hará para disputar el Gran Premio de Malasia. El Podcast Técnica Fórmula 1, en el segundo de una semana que tendrá un tercer episodio extra, nos prepara para el Gran Premio de Baréin: Edición Sepang. El nombre, y poco más. El circuito malayo acogerá del 2 al 4 de octubre el Gran Premio de Baréin, trasladado a más de 6.000 kilómetros del país que le da nombre. Los compromisos comerciales conservan la denominación, pero la pista, el clima y el desafío serán inequívocamente malasios. Después de una sucesión de carreras con poco espectáculo, Sepang ofrece algo que la Fórmula 1 necesita con urgencia: un circuito ancho, rápido, exigente y con diferentes oportunidades para adelantar. La previsión de tormentas puede añadir además la incertidumbre que tanto ha faltado durante las últimas pruebas. Un circuito que muchos descubrirán por primera vez Sepang recibió a la Fórmula 1 entre 1999 y 2017. Desde entonces ha permanecido fuera del calendario, por lo que buena parte de la parrilla actual nunca ha competido allí con un monoplaza de la categoría. Fernando Alonso es uno de los pilotos que mejor conoce la pista. Ganó en Malasia con Renault, Ferrari y McLaren. Lewis Hamilton también consiguió imponerse allí con Mercedes, mientras Verstappen fue el vencedor de la última edición celebrada en 2017. Para el resto de la parrila, el fin de semana tendrá mucho de descubrimiento. Los datos históricos ofrecen una referencia, pero los monoplazas de 2026, la aerodinámica activa y el peso de la parte eléctrica obligarán a empezar prácticamente desde cero. El circuito tiene 5,5 kilómetros, 15 curvas y dos largas rectas separadas por una horquilla muy lenta. Su anchura permite elegir diferentes trayectorias y abre la posibilidad de que dos pilotos lleguen en paralelo a las zonas de frenada. Eso ya supone una diferencia respecto a los últimos circuitos urbanos. Carga aerodinámica sin renunciar a la velocidad Configurar el coche para Sepang exige encontrar un equilibrio entre necesidades opuestas. Las rectas demandan eficiencia y una velocidad punta elevada, pero las curvas rápidas del segundo sector requieren carga aerodinámica y estabilidad. El coche también necesita responder en cambios de dirección, absorber algunos desniveles y conservar la tracción a la salida de los giros más lentos. La primera y la última curva ofrecen las oportunidades de adelantamiento más claras. Ambas llegan después de largas rectas y obligan a reducir considerablemente la velocidad. Una buena estabilidad en frenada será fundamental, especialmente si la pista está húmeda. También habrá que cuidar la refrigeración. Las elevadas temperaturas y la humedad de Malasia castigan la unidad de potencia, los frenos y al propio piloto. Las tomas de aire deberán mantener todos los componentes dentro de su ventana de funcionamiento sin perjudicar demasiado la aerodinámica. Sepang, dado que no favorece únicamente una cualidad, exige un coche muy completo. Pirelli busca más de una estrategia Pirelli ha elegido los compuestos C2, C3 y C4, la zona intermedia de su gama. El asfalto de Sepang es especialmente abrasivo y no ha sido repavimentado desde la última visita de la Fórmula 1 en 2017. Las cargas laterales, el calor y la variedad de curvas pueden producir una degradación mucho mayor que la observada en Bakú o Madrid. A pesar de ello, Pirelli ha evitado llevar el compuesto más duro. Su intención es reducir la diferencia entre las estrategias de una y dos paradas y proporcionar a los equipos diferentes caminos para completar la carrera. La decisión puede resultar decisiva (valga la redundancia): una degradación real obligaría a los pilotos a elegir entre conservar neumáticos o utilizar su ritmo. También permitiría que un coche más lento intentase ganar posiciones mediante una parada adicional. Después de varias carreras decididas con estrategias demasiado similares, Sepang debería devolver a los neumáticos una influencia mayor. En Malasia, además, la lluvia puede aparecer con una intensidad extraordinaria y transformar la pista en pocos minutos. La gran pregunta es si veremos finalmente a los monoplazas de 2026 competir en condiciones de mojado. La nueva generación de coches todavía no ha afrontado una carrera realmente lluviosa. La entrega de la potencia eléctrica, la recuperación de energía y el comportamiento de la aerodinámica activa añaden interrogantes a los problemas tradicionales de visibilidad y aquaplaning. Si la lluvia llega, Sepang se convertirá en el examen más completo del reglamento. Habrá que comprobar cómo entregan la potencia estos coches sobre un asfalto con poco agarre y si los neumáticos de lluvia permiten competir o vuelven a quedar relegados detrás del coche de seguridad. El desafío no será únicamente para los pilotos. Dirección de Carrera tendrá que decidir cuándo existen condiciones suficientes para correr. Mercedes llega como referencia La victoria de Russell en Bakú y el liderato de Antonelli sitúan nuevamente a Mercedes como el equipo a batir. Russell dominó el último fin de semana, mientras Antonelli ha demostrado durante toda la temporada una regularidad que ninguno de sus rivales ha podido igualar. Sepang, con sus curvas rápidas y sus fuertes frenadas, debería adaptarse bien a un coche equilibrado. Red Bull llega reforzada por el doble podio de Verstappen y Hadjar. El rendimiento de ambos en Azerbaiyán mostró un equipo capaz de luchar con sus dos pilotos, algo que puede resultar especialmente importante en una carrera marcada por la estrategia. McLaren necesita reaccionar después de marcharse de Bakú sin puntos. Norris atraviesa uno de sus mejores momentos de velocidad, pero tanto él como Piastri deberán evitar los errores que arruinaron su último Gran Premio. Ferrari vuelve a ser la gran incógnita. También regresará una pista permanente en la que adelantar no depende de encerrar al rival contra un muro ni de esperar un accidente. La Fórmula 1 llega después de varias carreras que han necesitado coches de seguridad para generar emoción. Sepang debería ofrecerla mediante la degradación, la estrategia y la propia dificultad del trazado. La Fórmula 1 llega a Bakú después del decepcionante estreno de Madrid (como carrera) y vuelve a enfrentarse a un circuito urbano. Pero las semejanzas terminan prácticamente ahí. El Podcast Técnica Fórmula 1 nos prepara para esperar todo lo bueno y todo lo malo de esta carrera. Carreras imprevisibles. El trazado de Azerbaiyán ha producido carreras imprevisibles, adelantamientos, accidentes y situaciones estratégicas difíciles de anticipar. Combina una zona extremadamente estrecha alrededor del casco histórico con largas rectas y fuertes frenadas. Es uno de los circuitos más particulares del campeonato. Este año, además, planteará una pregunta inevitable: ¿qué ocurrirá con la gestión de la energía en la recta más larga del Mundial? Madrid demostró que los monoplazas de 2026 pueden verse obligados a levantar el acelerador incluso en zonas concebidas para recorrerse a fondo. En Bakú, donde el tramo desde la última curva hasta la primera exige máxima potencia durante mucho tiempo, el problema del clipping puede alcanzar otra dimensión. Un urbano de más de seis kilómetros El circuito de Bakú tiene 6,003 kilómetros y veinte curvas. Muchas son giros de noventa grados enlazados por zonas de aceleración, mientras que el paso por el casco antiguo obliga a los pilotos a atravesar uno de los puntos más estrechos de toda la temporada. Después llega la enorme recta principal. Esa combinación obliga a buscar un compromiso complicado. El coche necesita carga aerodinámica y buena tracción para responder en el sector más revirado, pero también debe reducir al máximo la resistencia al avance para no quedar indefenso en las rectas. Demasiada ala puede ofrecer confianza en las curvas lentas y convertirse después en una condena cuando el rival abre (abría) el DRS. Descargar en exceso el coche mejora la velocidad punta, pero dificulta la frenada, reduce la adherencia en la parte técnica y castiga la salida de las curvas. Bakú es, por tanto, un circuito de eficiencia. No basta con generar carga: hay que conseguirla sin pagar un precio excesivo en las rectas. La gestión eléctrica puede decidir el rendimiento La larguísima zona a fondo será una prueba especialmente complicada para las unidades de potencia de 2026. Los equipos necesitan administrar la energía eléctrica para evitar que el coche pierda empuje antes de alcanzar la frenada de la primera curva. Si la batería deja de aportar potencia demasiado pronto, la pérdida de velocidad puede ser enorme y el piloto quedará expuesto precisamente en el punto más claro de adelantamiento. En otros circuitos es posible recuperar parte de esa energía a lo largo de la vuelta. En Bakú, las numerosas frenadas ayudan, pero la demanda de la recta principal es excepcional. Los equipos tendrán que decidir cuánto despliegan, dónde recuperan y hasta qué punto sacrifican rendimiento en otros sectores para llegar al final de la recta con potencia eléctrica disponible. Después de lo visto en Madrid, existe el temor de que los pilotos vuelvan a levantar antes de lo esperado para gestionar la batería. La diferencia es que Bakú sí ofrece fuertes frenadas y oportunidades claras para atacar. La reglamentación puede restarle espectáculo, pero el trazado debería darle más posibilidades que Madring para defenderse de ella. Frenar desde 313 kilómetros por hora Bakú también representa una de las pruebas más exigentes de la temporada para los sistemas de frenado. Brembo le asigna el nivel máximo de dificultad, un cinco sobre cinco. Los pilotos utilizan los frenos diez veces por vuelta durante un total de 18,5 segundos. Dos de esas frenadas están clasificadas como duras, seis como medias y dos como ligeras. La más exigente es la primera curva. Los monoplazas llegan a 313 kilómetros por hora y reducen hasta los 140 en 2,13 segundos. Durante ese proceso recorren 123 metros, mientras el piloto ejerce una fuerza aproximada de 115 kilos sobre el pedal y soporta una desaceleración de 3,9 g. Llegar con los neumáticos y los frenos en la ventana adecuada será fundamental. Un pequeño bloqueo puede terminar en una escapatoria, contra las barreras o permitiendo que un rival complete el adelantamiento. Neumáticos fríos al final de la recta Pirelli llevará los compuestos C3, C4 y C5, que actuarán respectivamente como duro, medio y blando. La elección es un paso más conservadora que la de 2025, cuando también estuvo disponible el C6. Aquel neumático blando no se utilizó durante la carrera. Los pilotos prefirieron apoyarse en el C5 y el C4 para prolongar sus tandas y conservar flexibilidad estratégica. El asfalto de Bakú es relativamente liso y poco abrasivo. El desgaste y la degradación deberían ser bajos, por lo que la estrategia de una sola parada aparece nuevamente como la opción más probable. En 2025 todos los pilotos completaron la carrera con una única detención. Esteban Ocon llegó incluso a recorrer prácticamente toda la distancia con un mismo juego de medios después de entrar en boxes en la primera vuelta para cambiar el alerón delantero. Todo apunta a que el C5 podría volver a soportar tandas muy largas. El duro, en cambio, corre el riesgo de quedar prácticamente descartado si los equipos consideran suficiente la combinación del medio y el blando. Durante las primeras sesiones puede aparecer algo de graining, especialmente por la escasa adherencia inicial de un circuito urbano. Sin embargo, la pista evolucionará rápidamente a medida que los coches depositen goma. Algunas zonas de las curvas 2, 3 y 4 han sido reasfaltadas, aunque Pirelli no espera que esos trabajos modifiquen de forma importante el comportamiento general de los neumáticos. La temperatura será tan importante como el desgaste El principal desafío no debería ser conservar las gomas, sino mantenerlas dentro de su ventana de funcionamiento. La recta principal permite que los neumáticos pierdan temperatura antes de llegar a la frenada más fuerte del circuito. Los avances en el diseño de las llantas pueden acentuar ese enfriamiento y aumentar el riesgo de bloqueo, especialmente en el eje delantero. Los edificios que rodean la pista crean, además, numerosas zonas de sombra. Aunque la temperatura ambiental sea relativamente elevada, el asfalto no recibe el sol de manera uniforme. El piloto puede salir de una zona lenta, recorrer el larguísimo tramo a máxima velocidad y llegar a la curva 1 con menos temperatura de la deseada. Allí tendrá que frenar desde más de 300 kilómetros por hora, girar con precisión y evitar bloquear una rueda. Ese equilibrio entre refrigeración, adherencia y estabilidad en frenada puede ser una de las claves del fin de semana. Una carrera en sábado El programa se adelanta un día respecto al formato habitual. Los entrenamientos libres se disputarán el jueves, la clasificación el viernes y la carrera comenzará el sábado a las 15:00, hora local, para evitar la coincidencia con una festividad nacional. El cambio puede parecer menor, pero alterará las rutinas de equipos, pilotos, medios de comunicación y aficionados. También reducirá el margen para reaccionar ante cualquier problema logístico o técnico. Bakú será el comienzo de otro triplete y llega después de un fin de semana sin Fórmula 1. El descanso habrá sido bienvenido, porque la parte final de la temporada vuelve a presentar una carga considerable. Un circuito que acostumbra a romper los pronósticos El próximo será el décimo Gran Premio celebrado en las calles de Bakú. La primera edición, en 2016, se disputó bajo la denominación de Gran Premio de Europa; las ocho siguientes lo hicieron ya como Gran Premio de Azerbaiyán. Sergio Pérez y Max Verstappen son los únicos pilotos que han ganado allí en más de una ocasión, con dos victorias cada uno. Red Bull es el equipo más laureado, con cinco triunfos, mientras Charles Leclerc conserva el récord de poles después de haber salido cuatro veces desde la primera posición. Son estadísticas que reflejan dos caras diferentes del circuito. Leclerc ha demostrado una capacidad extraordinaria para extraer rendimiento a una vuelta, pero las carreras de Bakú han recompensado a menudo la velocidad punta, la gestión de los incidentes y la capacidad para sobrevivir al caos. Este año puede ocurrir algo parecido. La baja degradación apunta hacia una prueba sencilla de una parada. Sin embargo, la temperatura de los neumáticos, las fuertes frenadas, los muros, el posible coche de seguridad y la gestión eléctrica pueden desordenarlo todo.
